Hospital and Airline Tycoon Dr Prasert Prasarttong-Osoth Dies at 93

BANGKOK — Dr Prasert Prasarttong-Osoth, the visionary founder of Thailand’s largest private hospital network and the airline that put Koh Samui on the global tourism map, has passed away at the age of 93.

Dr Prasert died on Tuesday after being treated for an unspecified condition for an extended period, according to Bangkok Dusit Medical Services Plc (BDMS), the healthcare giant he built from a single hospital into a regional powerhouse. His funeral will be held at Wat Thepsirin in Bangkok, where family, friends and business leaders will gather to pay their respects to a man who reshaped both Thai healthcare and aviation.

Born in Bangkok on March 22, 1933, Prasert was the fourth of ten children of Thongyu and Boonrod Prasarttong-Osoth, formerly known as Changboonchu. He completed his primary and secondary education at Assumption College Bang Rak before studying at Triam Udom Suksa School, followed by the pre-medical programme at Chulalongkorn University, until March 1960. After earning his medical degree from Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, he worked as a surgeon at Siriraj for five years. But a growing interest in business drew him away from the operating theatre and into entirely different fields, including construction and oil exploration.

His entry into the hospital business came in 1972 with the founding of Bangkok Hospital, a single facility that expanded gradually over two decades before becoming Bangkok Dusit Medical Services Plc. The company was listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand in 1991. Today, BDMS operates the largest private healthcare network in Thailand and Cambodia, with 58 hospitals under six major brands: Bangkok Hospital, Samitivej Hospital, BNH Hospital, Phyathai Hospital, Paolo Hospital and the Royal Hospital Group in Cambodia. His fourth daughter, Dr Poramaporn Prasarttong-Osoth, took over as chief executive of BDMS in September 2020, ensuring the family’s continued stewardship of the healthcare empire.

But Dr Prasert’s entrepreneurial reach extended far beyond medicine. Bangkok Airways began its life in 1968 when he established Sahakol Air as a department within his company, Krungthep Sahakol. The operation ran charter flights based on market demand, a modest beginning for what would become one of Thailand’s most distinctive airlines. In 1984, the airline was spun off as a separate company operating as Bangkok Airways. Two years later, in 1986, it began scheduled flights from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima, Surin and Krabi, using an 18-seat aircraft.

The business truly took off after the company made a bold and unconventional decision: to build its own airport on the southern island of Koh Samui in Surat Thani. At the time, Samui was a backpacker’s secret, a sleepy island with dirt roads and bungalows rather than resorts. Bangkok-Samui flights began in 1989, and the company has enjoyed a near-monopoly on the route ever since, transforming Samui into a world-class destination for luxury tourism. Bangkok Airways was listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand in 2014. The airline also operates other domestic and international routes, linking Bangkok with major heritage tourism sites such as Siem Reap in Cambodia, Luang Prabang in Laos, and Xi’an, Guilin, Jinghong and Chiang Rung in China. His eldest son, Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth, has been the chief executive of Bangkok Airways since 2019.

In the annual ranking of Thailand’s richest stock investors in 2025, Dr Prasert placed third, with total shareholdings worth 33.1 billion baht, derived from his 9.2 percent stake in BDMS and 11.4 percent stake in Bangkok Airways. Forbes magazine this year ranked him as Thailand’s seventh-richest person, with an estimated net worth of around $3.6 billion as of April 21. Despite his immense wealth, Dr Prasert was known for a relatively low public profile, allowing his businesses to speak for themselves.

Dr Prasert married Wanli Posayachinda in 1963, and the couple had four children while adopting a fifth. His body will be placed at Sala Klang Nam at Wat Thepsirin, with a bathing ceremony scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, followed by a royal bathing rite at 5:00 p.m. and funeral prayers at 6:00 p.m. Prayers will continue daily from April 23 to 28 at 6:30 p.m. The body will then be kept for 100 days in accordance with tradition. The family has asked the public to refrain from sending wreaths, requesting instead that those wishing to pay their respects do so through their presence or through donations to charitable causes.

He was a doctor who built an empire, a surgeon who became a tycoon, and a dreamer who built an airport on an island because he believed the world would want to come. He was right.

    Lahore police have registered a case against the Station House Officer (SHO) of Sarwar Road Police Station and 10 other personnel following a raid at the residence of Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Awan. According to police, the officers had information about a house adjacent to the Attorney General’s residence. However, they allegedly entered the wrong property during the operation. The FIR states that the SHO and 11 police personnel were charged for allegedly exceeding their authority during the raid. The incident has also prompted further action against the officials involved. Awan’s driver, Irfan, claimed that the SHO and other police officers entered the house by jumping over the gate. He further alleged that the police took away the CCTV camera system during the raid. According to the driver, only domestic staff were present at the residence when the police arrived. The Attorney General reached home after finishing a meeting after being informed about the incident. Irfan also alleged that the police later returned the digital video recorder (DVR) after deleting CCTV footage from the system. The raid reportedly caused damage to property outside the residence, including flower pots placed near the entrance. Police officials said the raid was conducted based on information concerning the neighbouring house and that the officers mistakenly entered Awan’s residence. Meanwhile, the SHO of Sarwar Road Police Station has obtained interim bail from the court in connection with the case.

    Two members of President Donald Trump’s cabinet remained aboard a decoy aircraft after Trump quietly departed the plane and boarded a different flight while in Turkey last month, according to a US television network report. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stayed on what was widely believed to be Air Force One and did not join the alternate flight arranged for Trump due to security concerns tied to Iran. Trump boarded Air Force One on July 8 alongside both officials as well as members of the traveling press before slipping away via a catering truck, which transported him discreetly to a separate military aircraft. Because the designation “Air Force One” applies to whichever plane the president occupies, the original aircraft retained the call sign even after Trump had already left it, effectively turning it into the decoy. According to the report, Rubio and Bessent remained on the first aircraft in order to preserve the presidential line of succession in case anything happened to Trump during the flight. Under that line of succession, Vice President JD Vance would assume power if the president died or became incapacitated, followed by the Speaker of the House and the President Pro Tempore of the Senate. The Secretary of State ranks next in the order, followed by the Treasury Secretary. Others who stayed aboard the original aircraft designated as Air Force One included White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller and White House communications director Steven Cheung. The second aircraft that carried Trump out of Ankara also included Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, according to separate US media reports. Speaking to reporters Monday night, Trump said the decision to carry out the plane switch came from the US military and the Secret Service, who he said wanted him to travel on a different aircraft. He did not provide specifics about the nature of the security threat, saying only that he regularly receives numerous threats and that any consequential president faces the same. A request for comment sent to the White House had not been answered as of publication.

    Pakistan’s military has categorically ruled out any future negotiations with terrorist groups, declaring that security forces will continue operations until militancy is eliminated. The announcement was made by Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, during a detailed media briefing on the country’s security situation and ongoing counterterrorism campaign. The military spokesperson said there was no possibility of holding talks with terrorists. He stressed that the state would not negotiate with those involved in violence against Pakistan. According to him, terrorists have only two choices: surrender before the law or face decisive action by the country’s security forces. Lt Gen Chaudhry said the armed forces would continue to engage directly with the people of Balochistan instead of individuals or groups involved in violence. He emphasized that the people of the province are the true stakeholders and that the military remains committed to protecting their lives and supporting their development. He also criticized certain influential elites and tribal leaders, claiming they had failed to promote the welfare of ordinary people. According to him, some powerful groups do not want children from poor families to progress through education and development. The military spokesperson further alleged that the Taliban administration in Afghanistan was providing support to terrorist groups carrying out attacks inside Pakistan. He said cross-border militancy remains one of the country’s major security challenges and continues to complicate efforts to maintain peace. Rejecting claims that the security situation in Balochistan is rapidly deteriorating, Lt Gen Chaudhry said a coordinated propaganda campaign was being carried out to create a false impression about conditions in the province. He maintained that while security challenges exist, the state is actively responding through intelligence-based operations and law enforcement measures. Speaking about Balochistan, he said the province’s unique geography presents operational challenges. Its vast territory, scattered population, and long distances between security posts require extensive coordination and resources. He added that security forces are dealing not only with terrorism but also with organized criminal activities, including drug trafficking, fuel smuggling, robbery, and other illegal networks that threaten stability. Addressing the issue of missing persons, the military spokesperson said the relevant commission had received hundreds of complaints. However, he noted that investigations had revealed that some individuals listed as missing were later found to have been killed during security operations, while others had joined militant organizations and were living in terrorist camps. Lt Gen Chaudhry presented detailed statistics on the country’s counterterrorism campaign. He said security forces have carried out 40,348 intelligence-based operations across Pakistan during the current year. These operations resulted in the killing of 2,084 confirmed terrorists, averaging approximately 10 militants eliminated every day. He added that security forces conduct nearly 194 operations daily as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle militant networks. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa remained the main focus of these operations, with 1,971 intelligence-based missions conducted in the province alone. The military also shared figures regarding casualties suffered during the ongoing campaign. According to Lt Gen Chaudhry, 819 people embraced martyrdom during the year. These included 303 personnel of the Pakistan Army, 194 members of law enforcement agencies, and 322 civilians who lost their lives in terrorist attacks and security-related incidents. The ISPR chief further revealed that 28 suicide attacks had been recorded across Pakistan during the current year. He claimed Afghan nationals were involved in the recent suicide attacks in Tank and Karachi, describing the incidents as evidence of continued cross-border terrorist involvement. Highlighting the importance of national unity, Lt Gen Chaudhry said Pakistan’s Constitution and legal system apply equally to every citizen. He stressed that loyalty to the state is a fundamental responsibility and said national peace, political stability, and economic development depend on a strong and secure Pakistan.
