HRW says Israeli strike that killed journalist was war crime

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused Israel of carrying out a deliberate airstrike that killed Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil, saying the attack may amount to a war crime under international law.

In a report released on Wednesday, the international rights organisation said the strike targeted Amal Khalil and her camerawoman, Zainab Faraj, while they were covering Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon earlier this year.

Amal Khalil, a reporter for the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on April 22 in the town of Al-Tayri. Her colleague, camerawoman Zainab Faraj, was seriously injured in the same attack.

According to HRW, the available evidence suggests the Israeli military knew journalists were inside the building before launching the strike. The organisation said information gathered during its investigation indicates the attack was intentional and violated international humanitarian law.

The report also referred to requests made by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and the International Committee of the Red Cross for access to the area. HRW said these requests support evidence that authorities were aware of the presence of journalists at the location.

Human Rights Watch further stated that Amal Khalil remained alive for some time after the strike. However, it alleged that Israeli forces prevented rescue workers from reaching the site, delaying emergency medical assistance that could have improved her chances of survival.

The organisation said deliberately targeting journalists performing their professional duties and blocking humanitarian access are serious violations of international law. It added that such actions could constitute war crimes and should be investigated independently.

HRW called for a transparent and impartial investigation into the incident and urged those responsible to be held accountable. It also stressed that journalists covering armed conflicts are civilians protected under international humanitarian law and must not be targeted during military operations.

Cynthia Erivo pays sweet tribute to Ariana Grande …

Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande have once again reminded fans why their friendship remains one of the most beloved bonds to come out of Wicked. The longtime co-stars reunited onstage in London, creating an emotional moment that quickly became one of the highlights of Grande’s Eternal Sunshine Tour.  On August 16, Erivo surprised fans at London’s O2 Arena when she joined Grande during the second night of the singer’s London shows. The pair performed “For Good,” the emotional Wicked song that has become closely associated with their characters, Elphaba and Glinda. They also treated the audience to the “Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again” medley.  The reunion was especially meaningful because it marked their first live performance together since the 2025 television special Wicked: One Wonderful Night. Their return to the stage together brought back memories of their years working on the two Wicked movies and the friendship they developed away from the spotlight.  Erivo has previously spoken warmly about singing with Grande, describing her as one of the few people she genuinely loves performing alongside. She explained that she does not often want to sing with other people, but Grande is different because their voices and energy naturally complement one another.  That affection was clear during their London reunion. The two stars embraced onstage, while Grande was also seen kissing Erivo’s hand, adding another tender moment to the performance. Their chemistry once again reminded audiences of the special connection they built while bringing Elphaba and Glinda to life.  Their friendship has faced plenty of public speculation over the years. However, Erivo has repeatedly made it clear that their bond is genuine. In a 2026 interview, she discussed how people struggled to understand the closeness between two women and emphasized that deep, platonic female friendships are real.  The London reunion therefore felt like more than just another surprise concert appearance. It was a celebration of music, friendship and the lasting impact of Wicked. For fans who have followed Erivo and Grande since the beginning of their journey as Elphaba and Glinda, seeing them share the stage again was a particularly touching reminder that their connection continues long after the cameras stop rolling.

DNA tests ordered after Mir Raza Ali’s grave exh…

KARACHI: An eight-member medical board has completed a fresh post-mortem examination of Wafflix owner Mir Raza Ali’s exhumed remains and sent samples for DNA and chemical testing, amid questions over the identity of the body and the circumstances surrounding his death. Ali’s grave was exhumed on Saturday at the Tariq Road cemetery in Karachi, where the medical board collected evidence before the remains were reburied. Professor Dr Naseem, a member of the medical board, said the samples had been properly preserved and would be examined at a laboratory. The testing will include DNA analysis and chemical examination, which officials say could provide crucial evidence in the case. The exhumation and re-post-mortem were conducted under the supervision of the judicial magistrate and police surgeon. Advocate Jibran Nasir said the process began at around 11:07am and was completed after the medical team collected the required evidence. He said the board had also addressed questions previously raised by the police surgeon. According to Nasir, an initial medical report was expected later on Saturday, while the final findings would be issued after completion of the chemical examination. The fresh examination is expected to help determine whether Ali died by suicide or was murdered and whether the injuries found on the body were self-inflicted or caused by another person. Nasir said the proceedings had been conducted satisfactorily and expressed appreciation for the judiciary’s intervention in the matter. He said the investigation could help resolve speculation and unanswered questions surrounding the young entrepreneur’s death. However, another member of the medical board, CPLC official Amir Hasan, raised a significant question over the identity of the remains. Hasan said the board was not yet certain that the exhumed body belonged to Ali. To establish the identity, DNA samples were collected from the remains as well as from Ali’s parents. He said the DNA comparison would determine whether the body buried at the cemetery was indeed that of Ali.

Ukrainian drones strike Russian oil refineries deep inside enemy territory as energy attacks escalate

Ukraine has launched a series of long-range drone strikes targeting major oil processing facilities deep within Russian territory, hitting the Slavneft-Yanos refinery in Yaroslavl and the Bashneft-Novoil plant in Bashkortostan. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the strikes, stating that the operations targeted facilities located up to 1,300 kilometres from the Ukrainian border to disrupt fuel supplies and revenues used to fund Russia’s military campaign. Ukrainian forces also struck two Russian patrol boats and shadow fleet oil tankers in the Black Sea. Russian officials in Yaroslavl reported that emergency crews responded to multiple fires at the Slavneft-Yanos site after falling drone debris ignited fuel storage tanks, injuring four people. Russian air defence forces claimed to have intercepted hundreds of Ukrainian drones across several regions overnight. Simultaneously, Russian forces launched retaliatory strikes against Ukrainian energy and transport infrastructure. Heavy bombardment in the southern city of Kherson caused a complete blackout and severely disrupted internet connectivity, while additional Russian drone and missile strikes in Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, and Odesa killed at least 11 people and damaged residential areas, rail infrastructure, and cargo vessels.

Brandon King injured after brilliant Babar Azam run-out

TRINIDAD: West Indies endured a significant setback on day three of the second Test against Pakistan after opener Brandon King was forced off the field with a painful lower back injury moments after producing a brilliant run-out to dismiss Babar Azam. The dramatic incident unfolded during Pakistan’s first innings when Babar, who resumed play on an overnight score of 84, looked well placed to end his long wait for a Test century. However, a costly mix-up with fellow batter Abdullah Shafique brought his innings to an abrupt end. Attempting a quick single after guiding the ball into the off side, Babar found himself stranded halfway down the pitch as King reacted sharply from cover. The West Indies fielder gathered the ball cleanly and unleashed a direct hit that caught the Pakistan star well short of his crease. While the dismissal gave the hosts a much-needed breakthrough, it came at a heavy price. King appeared to injure his lower back during the throwing action and immediately collapsed to the ground in visible pain. Medical staff rushed onto the field, and after several minutes of treatment, the 31-year-old was taken off on a stretcher, leaving teammates and spectators concerned. Cricket West Indies later confirmed that King had suffered lower back muscle spasms and would take no further part in day three’s play as a precaution. Team officials added that his condition would continue to be monitored by the medical staff before a decision is made on his availability for the remainder of the match. Earlier in the day, Pakistan resumed on 266-2, with Babar and Abdullah adopting a cautious approach as the West Indies bowling attack maintained disciplined lines and restricted scoring opportunities. The pressure eventually paid off with Babar’s dismissal in the 75th over after he added just two runs to his overnight total. King’s injury has added fresh concern for the West Indies camp at a crucial stage of the Test, with the hosts now awaiting further medical updates while trying to keep Pakistan’s batting lineup under control. The coming days could prove decisive not only for the outcome of the match but also for King’s immediate cricketing future.
