Indian government seeks time until tomorrow afternoon

The Indian government has requested time until tomorrow afternoon to respond to the demands put forward by protesting youth,  Following a meeting with government representatives, the party rejected Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s position and announced that the protests would continue until the Minister of Education resigns.

Speaking to the media after discussions with government officials, the CJP spokesperson said that the government had asked for additional time to formulate its response. However, the party made it clear that it had already informed the authorities that the resignation of the Education Minister remained its primary demand. The spokesperson warned that if the minister does not step down, the protests will intensify across the country.

“The government has sought time until tomorrow afternoon to respond,” the spokesperson said. “We have clearly conveyed that unless the Education Minister resigns, the movement will continue to grow. If there is no resignation, we will have no option but to call for nationwide demonstrations.”

The party specifically demanded the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, holding him responsible for the issues that have fueled the youth-led protests. The spokesperson expressed hope that the government would take immediate action by dismissing the minister in order to ease public anger and restore confidence among students and young people.

According to the spokesperson, government representatives also indicated their willingness to address some of the protesters’ other demands. These include providing financial compensation to the families of students who allegedly died by suicide and withdrawing First Information Reports (FIRs) registered against young protesters who participated in a march held on July 20.

The announcement came as political tensions continued to rise in India. Opposition parties extended their support to the protesting youth and raised the issue in Parliament, criticizing the alleged use of force against demonstrators. Members of the opposition attempted to voice concerns over police action against students, but government lawmakers responded with loud protests and disruptions inside the House. The uproar eventually led to the suspension of parliamentary proceedings.

Meanwhile, the Chief Justice of India came under criticism after declining to view videos that allegedly showed police violence against students. Responding to the controversy, the Chief Justice explained that no constitutional petition had been formally filed before the court regarding the matter. He stated that the judiciary had only received a letter from a lawyer and that the issue could not be taken up without following the proper legal process.

In a separate development, the Indian government’s request for an urgent hearing into allegations of foreign funding behind the student protests was accepted the day after Justice Surya Kant declined to consider the videos of the alleged police action. The decision has added another dimension to the ongoing controversy, with critics questioning the differing levels of urgency applied to various aspects of the case.

The protests continue to attract widespread public attention, with demonstrators insisting that accountability, justice, and meaningful reforms are necessary before they end their movement. As the government prepares its official response, all eyes remain on whether it will address the protesters’ key demands, particularly the call for the resignation of the Education Minister, or whether the demonstrations will expand into a larger nationwide movement.

US war on iran costs $37.5bn so far: Pentagon

The United States has spent 37.5 billion dollars on its war against Iran to date, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth told lawmakers at a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing in Washington, while calling on Congress to approve additional funding for the conflict. The statement comes six months ahead of midterm elections, where Democrats lead in public opinion polls and are attempting to link the unpopular war with broader economic affordability concerns. Hegseth stated that the 37.5 billion dollar figure covers specific operational aspects of the war as well as anticipated expenditures through September 30, though the exact calculations used by the Pentagon were not detailed. The funding request follows President Donald Trump’s call for nearly 90 billion dollars in supplemental funding last month, primarily for the Iran conflict, setting up legislative friction with lawmakers who express frustration over the war’s trajectory and communication. Both Democratic and Republican members of Congress criticised the administration for a lack of transparency since US and Israeli military operations against Iran began on February 28. Senator Patty Murray warned that the president’s severe threats against civilian infrastructure risk war crimes and a prolonged conflict, while Senator Kirsten Gillibrand criticised contradictory statements from the administration regarding the duration and scope of the war. Hegseth warned lawmakers that without an urgent influx of capital, military training operations would need to be curtailed. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine acknowledged that while service members would receive their pay, the Pentagon could face challenges covering equipment maintenance and investments in future capabilities due to strains on its nearly 1 trillion dollar budget. In response, Hegseth urged Congress to approve not only the supplemental package but also a 1.5 trillion dollar defence budget for 2027, describing any failure to fund the department at that level as the single greatest threat to national security. The appeal for funds follows the breakdown of a fragile ceasefire earlier in the month, leading to daily reciprocal strikes between US and Iranian forces. US troop casualties have risen to 18 killed and approximately 430 injured, including 100 wounded since July 7, though the Pentagon noted that 96 per cent of those injured have returned to active duty. Meanwhile, President Trump has threatened to expand targets to include Iranian energy plants, bridges, the Kharg Island oil hub via ground forces, and the deep-underground Pickaxe Mountain nuclear-linked facility, stating that a strike on the mountain site would occur in the near future.

British Columbia declares emergency as fast-moving…

British Columbia declared a provincial state of emergency on Saturday after a rapidly spreading wildfire forced thousands of residents in the western Canadian province to flee their homes overnight, with the blaze nearly doubling in size within hours. The Bald Range wildfire burned out of control and expanded rapidly to roughly 9,500 hectares, prompting evacuation orders across Summerland, Peachland and other districts west of Okanagan Lake in the province’s southern interior. The region produces the majority of British Columbia’s wine and ranks as Canada’s second largest wine producing area, adding an economic dimension to the disaster beyond the immediate threat to homes and lives. Officials describe explosive fire behaviour Premier David Eby told a news conference on Saturday that one fire official had compared the blaze to an explosion going off. Eby said the official described flames reaching 100 feet up trees, with additional flames shooting a further 200 feet above that, and the fire generating its own weather system that produced lightning, which in turn fed further fire growth in a self-sustaining cycle. “Homes have been lost, and properties have been destroyed,” Eby said, adding that some residents became trapped as conditions shifted rapidly and required rescue. The premier described the situation as highly dynamic and continuing to pose a serious threat to the region. Summerland had a population of about 12,000 residents according to the 2021 census, while neighbouring Peachland is home to roughly 6,500 people. Province activates emergency powers The declaration of a state of emergency grants provincial authorities immediate access to special powers, including the ability to impose travel restrictions, protect essential supplies from price gouging and deploy specific tools to coordinate rescue operations across affected areas. Officials said the Bald Range wildfire has triggered the largest evacuation event of the summer so far, with more than 20,000 people across British Columbia forced from their homes since the fire began its rapid expansion. Summerland Mayor Doug Holmes, speaking by phone from nearby Penticton, said a large number of farms in the area have been affected and that officials do not yet know the full extent of structural losses. “They’re still busy fighting the fire,” Holmes said, adding that the community needed to prepare for the worst possible outcome as firefighting efforts continued. Residents flee as highways begin closing Many residents left their homes overnight, driving south toward Penticton or north toward Kelowna before several highways in the region began closing due to the advancing fire. Terry Fries, a Summerland resident, said he was watching a football game on Friday night when a neighbour warned him to prepare an emergency bag as the fire continued to grow nearby. Fries said the fire remained visible behind nearby hills earlier in the evening before conditions worsened. When British Columbia authorities issued the formal evacuation order around midnight, Fries and his family drove approximately 45 kilometres north to the city of Kelowna to reach safety. Residents captured video footage showing fires burning along the highway and structures engulfed in flames as they fled the area. By Saturday afternoon, ash had begun settling on cars and houses in nearby communities as smoke from the fire cast an orange glow across the sky. Power and water systems disrupted Summerland lost electricity on Saturday and issued a boil water notice for residents after untreated water entered the municipal system when it bypassed the standard water treatment plant due to disruptions caused by the wildfire. Wildfires strain resources nationwide Several Canadian provinces, including Ontario and Quebec, have battled significant wildfires this year as hot and dry weather conditions fuelled blazes across dense forest regions. International firefighting crews from Mexico, Australia, France and New Zealand have travelled to Canada to assist local personnel in combating the fires. In British Columbia specifically, where continued hot and dry conditions have heightened the risk of further fire spread, approximately 1,500 firefighting personnel are currently battling more than 100 active fires across the province. Authorities have issued 40 formal evacuation orders and an additional 49 evacuation alerts as the fire season continues to intensify. Wildfires have burned through approximately 4 million hectares of land across Canada so far this year, according to figures from the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, underscoring the scale of a fire season that has placed sustained pressure on emergency services and firefighting resources nationwide.

Salman Khan house security guard dies suddenly dur…

A Mumbai police constable posted outside Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s residence has died after reportedly falling ill while on security duty. The officer, identified as Constable Ganesh Raite, was part of the Mumbai Police team deployed outside Salman Khan’s Galaxy Apartments in Mumbai. According to Indian media reports, the constable complained of feeling unwell at around 6pm on Friday while carrying out his duty. His colleagues reportedly arranged for him to be taken to a hospital shortly afterward. However, doctors declared him dead after he was brought to the medical facility. Police officials have indicated that the constable may have suffered a heart attack while on duty. However, the exact cause of death has not yet been officially established. His body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, and the medical report is expected to provide further details. The incident occurred as Salman Khan continues to remain under heightened security because of threats against him. The actor’s security was upgraded to the Y-Plus category in 2024 following the killing of his close friend and former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique. Salman has faced repeated threats reportedly linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, with tensions surrounding a long-running blackbuck poaching case involving the actor. Security around Salman Khan’s residence has also been tightened following previous incidents. In April 2024, two motorcycle-borne individuals reportedly fired several rounds outside Galaxy Apartments. Investigators later linked the shooting incident to people associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi network. The latest death occurred while police personnel were continuing their security duties outside the actor’s Mumbai residence. The sudden death of Constable Ganesh Raite has raised attention because of the demanding security arrangements surrounding Salman Khan, who remains one of Bollywood’s most prominent and closely protected celebrities. Authorities are expected to establish the precise medical cause of death after the post-mortem examination. Until the medical findings are released, reports of a heart attack remain an initial assessment rather than a confirmed cause. The incident is also a reminder of the risks faced by police personnel assigned to high-profile security duties, where officers are required to maintain prolonged vigilance around protected individuals and their residences. Further details about the constable’s medical history and the circumstances surrounding his final moments are expected to emerge as the investigation and medical examination continue.

US announces visa curbs on cybercrime suspects

The United States has announced a new visa restriction policy targeting foreign nationals accused of involvement in cybercrime, online fraud and other cyber-enabled criminal activities. The new measures will apply to people who are directly involved in such crimes or who knowingly assist criminal networks. The policy specifically covers online scams, cyber fraud and sextortion. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the policy was introduced as part of the Trump administration’s broader campaign against cybercrime and fraud targeting American citizens. The move follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump aimed at combating cybercrime, financial fraud and schemes that exploit US citizens. According to the US State Department, online investment scams have become a major threat to Americans. The department said US citizens lost at least $10 billion to scams in 2024. Officials also raised concerns about criminal organisations operating across borders. Some scam operations are allegedly linked to transnational criminal groups and are associated with money laundering, corruption and human trafficking. The US government also highlighted the growing threat of sextortion. American children have reportedly been targeted by overseas criminals who use online platforms to manipulate and blackmail victims. Under the new policy, visa restrictions can be imposed on foreign nationals found responsible for or complicit in cybercrime and cyber-enabled criminal activities. In certain cases, immediate family members of individuals involved in such activities may also face visa restrictions. The policy has been introduced under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the US Immigration and Nationality Act. The administration said visa restrictions would form part of a wider effort to disrupt international scam networks. Other measures could include sanctions, criminal prosecutions, asset seizures and extradition requests. Washington also plans to strengthen cooperation with international law enforcement agencies to identify and dismantle criminal networks operating across borders. Rubio said the United States would pursue individuals who target Americans through cybercrime and fraudulent schemes. The administration said the new restrictions were intended to increase the consequences for criminals and those who help them operate

Rising fuel prices drive global surge in electric vehicle sales

Global sales of electric vehicles rose sharply during the second quarter of 2026 as soaring fuel prices linked to the conflict in the Middle East encouraged more consumers to switch away from petrol and diesel powered cars, according to a new report by the International Energy Agency. The agency said electric vehicle sales increased by 35 percent between April and June compared with the first three months of the year. Record sales were reported across 50 countries despite a slowdown in the overall global automobile market. According to the IEA, the renewed interest in electric vehicles was largely driven by the sharp rise in oil prices following the conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. The report said the resulting energy crisis reminded governments and consumers of the economic risks associated with dependence on imported oil. Oil prices climbed dramatically during the year after Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest energy shipping routes, in response to military strikes carried out by Israel and the United States. Crude prices rose from around 60 dollars per barrel at the beginning of the year to nearly 120 dollars, increasing fuel costs around the world and putting additional pressure on households and businesses. The IEA said the situation has brought energy security back to the centre of government policy discussions. Since road transport accounts for nearly half of global oil consumption, the agency noted that expanding the use of electric vehicles can reduce reliance on imported fuel while protecting consumers from sudden increases in fuel prices. The report said electric vehicles are now being viewed as an important tool for improving national energy security, particularly in countries that rely heavily on imported oil. By reducing dependence on global oil markets, governments hope to make their economies more resilient during periods of international instability. Several countries in Southeast Asia that were particularly affected by rising fuel costs responded by introducing temporary tax incentives to encourage people to buy electric vehicles. Similar government support measures have also been expanded in parts of Latin America and Europe as officials seek to accelerate the transition to cleaner transport. Based on the strong performance in the second quarter and continued policy support in many regions, the IEA expects global electric vehicle sales to increase by around 10 percent over the full year. If that forecast is achieved, electric cars are expected to account for approximately 29 percent of all new vehicle sales worldwide in 2026. The agency also predicted that the overall global car market will shrink this year, meaning electric vehicles are continuing to gain market share even as total vehicle demand weakens. The report noted that the year began on a slower pace for the electric vehicle industry. Sales dropped during the first quarter, mainly because of weaker demand in China and the United States, the world’s two largest EV markets. In the United States, the removal of government subsidies reduced consumer demand, while China’s slowing economy and reductions in financial incentives also affected purchases. Because China represents the largest electric vehicle market in the world, weaker sales there had a significant impact on global figures despite healthy growth in many other regions. Europe recorded the strongest performance during the first half of the year. According to the IEA, electric vehicle sales across the continent rose by more than 30 percent as supportive government policies, expanding charging infrastructure, and higher fuel prices encouraged more drivers to choose electric cars over conventional vehicles. The agency believes these trends could continue if governments maintain incentives and energy prices remain elevated.
