The bee is strong: Jollibee eyes 1,500 more areas for expansion

MANILA, Philippines – The bee still has plenty of room to grow.

Fast-food giant Jollibee Foods Corporation (JFC) has identified more than 1,500 potential areas for expansion across the Philippines from 2027 to 2030, with most of these outside Metro Manila.

In a disclosure on Thursday, October 29, JFC said approximately 71% of these prospective markets are outside the capital region, where the company sees considerable room to grow its Jollibee, Mang Inasal, and Chowking brands.

The three brands already account for nearly 90% of its Philippine systemwide sales, with Jollibee alone contributing more than half at 62%.

But the 1,500 identified trade areas do not necessarily translate to 1,500 new stores.

The company has yet to disclose specific locations, investment requirements, or annual store-opening targets associated with its expansion plans. Actual openings will depend on site availability, commercial viability, and expected investment returns, JFC said.

The expansion outlook comes after JFC revised down its global store opening target for 2026 from 1,200 to 1,300 new stores to just 1,000 to 1,100 in its Q2 2026 updated full-year guidance.

JFC’s Philippine business reported 5.7% growth in systemwide sales during Q2 2026, while same-store sales, which measure performance at existing outlets, grew a more modest 1.3%.

Beyond opening new stores, JFC is also experimenting with different formats to improve sales.

The company reported that Mang Inasal’s eight drive-thru outlets operating as of the first half of 2026 generated average daily sales approximately 40% higher than those of its other stores.

Going global

Meanwhile, Jollibee has been happy to play part-time ambassador too.

When President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. visited Canada in July, he and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also made a stop at a Jollibee branch in Vancouver, where they mingled with customers and employees after their bilateral meetings.

Two months later, British Trade Minister Anas Sarwar dropped by a Jollibee store in Bonifacio Global City during the first visit by a UK trade minister to the Philippines in nine years. He met JFC founder Tony Tan Caktiong, sampled the menu, and even received a Jollibee Funko Pop dressed in a Barong Tagalog.

The bee, it seems, is becoming quite the fixture in international relations.

And its international ambitions extend to the stock market.

JFC is preparing to spin off its international operations into a separately listed company, Jollibee Foods Corporation International (JFCI), with Hong Kong selected as its proposed listing venue instead of the United States, as originally planned.

Under the proposed restructuring, the Philippine business would remain listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange, while investors would be able to hold shares in a separately traded international company.

JFC is looking at a potential listing by late 2027, although it clarified on October 20 that reports of a Q3 2027 listing target were premature. The transaction remains subject to restructuring, market conditions, and regulatory approvals.

As of the first half of 2026, JFC operated 3,516 stores in the Philippines and another 7,251 internationally. – Rappler.com

UK petrol theft hits £200,000 a day amid fuel price surge

The sharp rise in fuel prices across the United Kingdom has triggered a significant increase in petrol theft, with filling stations now losing an estimated £200,000 worth of fuel every day, according to media reports. Petrol station operators have reported a growing number of “drive-off” incidents, where motorists fill their vehicles with fuel and leave without making payment. The trend has become increasingly common as higher fuel costs continue to put pressure on household budgets. Reports indicate that the overall financial impact of fuel theft has climbed by 48 percent following the recent surge in petrol and diesel prices. Retailers say the increase has added to the challenges already facing fuel station businesses, many of which are struggling with rising operating costs. The spike in fuel prices followed heightened tensions during the Iran conflict, when global oil markets experienced sharp volatility. During that period, the price of petrol reportedly increased by 27 pence per litre, while diesel prices rose by 37 pence per litre, making fuel significantly more expensive for consumers. Industry representatives warn that the consequences extend beyond financial losses. According to the Petrol Retailers Association (PRA), the rise in fuel prices has also been accompanied by an increase in abusive and aggressive behaviour directed at petrol station employees. Pump attendants have reportedly faced more verbal harassment and confrontations from frustrated customers. Fuel retailers are urging authorities to take stronger action against theft and improve security measures at filling stations. They also stress the need for greater protection for frontline staff, who are increasingly being exposed to difficult and sometimes dangerous situations while carrying out their duties.

Sara Duterte trial: Will Raymund Lachica ever take the witness stand?

Acosta’s admission that she handed over confidential funds to somebody else in violation of government rules is significant, but allegations of OVP fund misuse are old news. The prosecution needs a bombshell testimony to sway public opinion, and Lachica could be it.

Pakistan, US move closer to finalising reciprocal trade framework

Pakistan and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to finalising a reciprocal trade framework at the earliest, signalling significant progress in negotiations aimed at strengthening bilateral trade, investment, and long-term economic cooperation. The renewed commitment was expressed during a virtual meeting held on Wednesday between Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and United States Trade Representative (USTR) Ambassador Jamieson Greer. The two sides reviewed the progress made by their negotiating teams and discussed the remaining steps required to conclude the proposed agreement. According to an official statement, both countries acknowledged that negotiations have advanced substantially in recent months and reiterated their shared determination to complete the reciprocal trade framework as soon as possible. During the meeting, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb referred to the recent discussions held in Washington, D.C., and appreciated the constructive approach adopted by both negotiating teams. He said the steady progress reflects the mutual commitment of Pakistan and the United States to deepen economic ties and expand commercial cooperation. The finance minister stressed that maintaining the current momentum in negotiations is crucial for Pakistan’s broader economic agenda. He noted that a stronger trade and investment partnership with the United States would support Pakistan’s export-led growth strategy, improve economic resilience, attract foreign investment, and create new business opportunities for companies in both countries. Aurangzeb also highlighted the importance of continued collaboration with the US Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank), saying enhanced financial cooperation could facilitate trade, encourage investment, and strengthen business-to-business engagement between the two countries. On the US side, Ambassador Jamieson Greer acknowledged Pakistan’s consistent engagement throughout the negotiation process and appreciated the progress achieved on key labour and regulatory reforms. He particularly welcomed Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen compliance with international labour standards, including measures related to preventing forced labour. The US trade representative reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to advancing bilateral trade discussions and expressed confidence that the remaining issues could be resolved through continued technical-level consultations between the two sides. Finance Minister Aurangzeb emphasised the need for close coordination between officials from both countries and called for accelerated technical discussions to build on the progress already achieved. He said timely completion of the agreement would open new avenues for economic cooperation and strengthen long-term bilateral relations. Both delegations expressed satisfaction over the pace of negotiations and agreed to continue regular engagement to finalise the outstanding elements of the reciprocal trade framework. The officials reaffirmed their shared objective of concluding the agreement in the near future, paving the way for stronger trade, investment, and economic collaboration between Pakistan and the United States.
