    LAHORE: The Punjab government has ordered a province-wide crackdown against organized professional begging networks, with Lahore set to become the first “Beggar-Free City” under a coordinated enforcement campaign. The decision came during a meeting chaired by Punjab Home Secretary Dr Ahmed Javed Qazi at the Home Department. Authorities directed relevant departments to develop a joint strategy to identify professional beggars, expose the networks operating behind them, and take action against those who force vulnerable people into begging. The Punjab Safe Cities Authority and traffic police have received special assignments to help identify and dismantle the begging mafia’s network. Officials will use modern technology, surveillance tools and human intelligence to locate key hotspots and track repeat offenders. Dr Qazi stressed that authorities must take strict action against handlers who exploit children, women and elderly people for begging. He said the government had introduced legal amendments to increase penalties and fines and discourage organized begging networks. Under the amended Punjab Vagrancy Ordinance 1958, forcing someone to beg constitutes a non-bailable offence. The home secretary directed authorities to ensure strong prosecution of arrested members of the begging mafia so that cases result in effective convictions. The meeting also called for the creation of a centralized database of professional beggars who face repeated arrests. Officials will also maintain updated records of needy and destitute people who seek assistance at welfare homes. Dr Qazi instructed authorities to identify begging hotspots across Lahore and conduct targeted operations at these locations. He further emphasized the need for close coordination among all relevant departments to eliminate organized begging networks. The government also plans to strengthen welfare homes and turn them into support centers for vulnerable members of society. Officials will improve arrangements for food, healthcare and accommodation while providing education to children staying at these facilities. The welfare homes will also offer vocational training to help deserving individuals develop skills and achieve financial independence instead of relying on begging. Dr Qazi urged civil society organizations to play an active role in supporting vulnerable communities. The home secretary appealed to citizens to report professional begging networks to police at 15. He assured the public that the authorities would keep the identities of informants confidential.     PM orders expansion of strategic oil reserves

    ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to expand Pakistan’s strategic petroleum reserves while approving key amendments to the Pakistan Oil Refining Policy 2023, a move aimed at strengthening the country’s energy security, attracting investment and modernising the refining sector. Chairing a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE), the prime minister was briefed on the progress of refinery upgradation projects, ongoing energy sector reforms and the implementation of the revised refining policy. He described the modernisation of Pakistan’s oil refineries as a national priority, saying it would improve energy security, reduce reliance on imported fuels and support the production of cleaner, environmentally friendly petroleum products. The approved amendments focus on upgrading existing refineries to increase production capacity while enabling the manufacture of Euro-V standard petrol and diesel. The changes are also intended to reduce the production of furnace oil and other lower-quality petroleum products, helping Pakistan meet international environmental commitments and curb air pollution. To encourage foreign investment, Prime Minister Shehbaz instructed officials to organise investment roadshows in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries to promote opportunities in Pakistan’s refining sector. He stressed that the revised policy must be implemented without delay and warned that negligence in executing the reforms would not be tolerated.     KARACHI: Buying activity dominated trading at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Thursday, with the benchmark KSE-100 Index rising more than 500 points during the early session. At around 9:45am, the benchmark index was trading at 180,864.26 points, recording an increase of 553.05 points, or 0.31%, from the previous close. The positive trend reflected renewed investor interest in several major sectors. Several index-heavy companies also contributed to the upward movement. HUBCO, Fauji Fertilizer Company (FFC), MCB Bank, National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) and United Bank Limited (UBL) were among the stocks trading in positive territory during the early hours. The latest gains come after the stock market staged a recovery in the previous session. On Wednesday, the PSX rebounded as investors returned to buying after two consecutive sessions of profit-taking. Market sentiment also improved toward the end of Wednesday’s trading session following reports regarding an extension of the US-Iran ceasefire, which helped ease some concerns among investors about geopolitical developments and their potential impact on regional markets. The KSE-100 Index ultimately closed Wednesday’s session at 180,311.22 points. Global markets provide positive cues The positive momentum at the domestic bourse was also supported by a broadly upbeat trend in Asian equity markets. Asian stocks advanced on Thursday after fresh US inflation data broadly matched market expectations. The figures reduced some expectations of an immediate tightening move by the US Federal Reserve and provided support to investor sentiment. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan rose 0.97%, while South Korea’s benchmark market climbed sharply, gaining 4.4%. Japan’s Nikkei index also advanced 1.86%. US stock futures remained relatively stable, with S&P 500 E-mini futures up 0.02% during the Asian trading session. US inflation remains in focus According to data released on Wednesday, US consumer prices increased by 0.1% in July, broadly matching economists’ expectations. The modest increase in consumer prices has lowered expectations of an immediate interest-rate hike by the Federal Reserve. Market participants are closely monitoring inflation figures as they assess the central bank’s next policy move. According to CME Group’s FedWatch tool, financial markets were pricing in around a 40% probability of a rate hike next month, down from approximately 54% a week earlier. Oil prices remain near $80 Meanwhile, international oil prices remained close to the $80-per-barrel level, as diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran remained unresolved. Developments in oil prices remain important for Pakistan’s economy and financial markets because changes in global crude prices can influence the country’s import bill, inflation outlook, exchange-rate pressures and corporate earnings. Investors at the PSX are expected to closely monitor both domestic economic developments and international market cues as trading progresses on Thursday.
