Noah Kahan slams White House over unauthorised song use.

Noah Kahan has become the latest musician to publicly push back against the Trump administration after the White House used his music without permission, joining a growing list of artists who have objected to their songs being used in administration social media content.
The dispute began when the White House posted photographs and video to both Instagram and TikTok showing President Trump touring General Motors’ Milford Proving Ground in Michigan. The posts were set to Kahan’s song American Cars, taken from his chart-topping album The Great Divide. The pairing was clearly intended to evoke a sense of American pride and manufacturing strength, but the artist whose voice and music gave the posts their soundtrack had not been consulted and had not given his approval.
Fans were quick to notice and quickly alerted Kahan by tagging him in the comments. His response was direct and unambiguous. “Would never approve of my music being used in support of you or this administration,” he wrote beneath the post. The comment rapidly accumulated tens of thousands of likes, suggesting the sentiment resonated well beyond Kahan’s own fanbase.
His frequent collaborator and co-writer on the track, guitarist Noah Levine, also left a response of his own beneath the White House post. His comment was reportedly more direct in its language than Kahan’s, though it was subsequently removed. At the time of publication, the song itself remained attached to the White House’s video despite both objections.
The White House did not respond to requests for comment on Kahan’s objection.
The incident is part of a pattern that has become increasingly familiar during the Trump administration’s social media operations. Just days before Kahan spoke out, Katy Perry criticised the White House for using her 2010 hit Firework in a TikTok post featuring footage of military strikes. “I’m deeply appalled and angry,” she wrote, adding that she had not approved its use and had not even been asked. Ariana Grande raised similar concerns in June after a version of her song Bye appeared in a White House TikTok post depicting ICE arrests.
The list of artists who have previously objected to the administration’s use of their music is extensive. Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, Celine Dion, Neil Young and the Rolling Stones have all at various points voiced comparable complaints, reflecting a consistent tension between an administration that appears to deploy popular music as a tool of political imagery and the musicians whose work is being used without their knowledge or consent.
For Kahan, the issue was clearly not simply procedural but personal. His response made clear that the objection was not only about the absence of permission but about the specific association itself, one he said he would never willingly choose.

Farhan Akhtar exits Aamir Khan’s Lalkaara, Sidhant Gupta joins cast

A major casting change has taken place in Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker’s upcoming sports drama Lalkaara, with Farhan Akhtar stepping away from the project and actor Sidhant Gupta coming on board as his replacement. Farhan was initially expected to play a key role in the film, but he has reportedly withdrawn because of scheduling conflicts with another ambitious project. The actor is preparing for a biographical film based on the life of legendary music composer R.D. Burman, a role that requires significant preparation and a long production schedule. At the same time, Lalkaara is expected to demand extensive cricket training from its cast, along with a lengthy shooting schedule. Balancing both productions reportedly proved difficult, leading Farhan to prioritize the R.D. Burman biopic and step away from his acting commitment in the sports drama. Despite his exit from the cast, Farhan remains closely associated with Lalkaara in his capacity as a producer. The film is being backed by Excel Entertainment, led by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, in collaboration with Rajkumar Hirani Films. His continued involvement ensures that he remains an important part of the project behind the scenes. Following Farhan’s departure, the filmmakers finalized Sidhant Gupta for the role. The actor has steadily built a strong reputation through performances in acclaimed projects such as Inside Edge, Jubilee, Black Warrant, and Freedom at Midnight. His addition to Lalkaara is expected to bring fresh energy to the ensemble cast. Sidhant will reportedly portray one of the close friends of Aamir Khan’s character in the film. While details about his role have been kept under wraps, his casting marks another significant milestone in his growing career, as he joins one of the most anticipated Bollywood projects currently in development. Lalkaara is based on the historic 1952 India-Pakistan Test cricket series, a landmark chapter in the history of cricket between the two neighbouring nations. The film aims to blend sports, history and drama, revisiting a defining moment in Indian cricket through a cinematic narrative. The project is also notable for reuniting Aamir Khan with director Ashutosh Gowariker after their iconic collaboration on Lagaan, the Oscar-nominated sports drama that remains one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated films. Their reunion has generated considerable excitement among fans, who are eager to see the duo work together again after more than two decades. The screenplay has been written by Piyush Gupta, known for his work on Dangal and Chhichhore, alongside Neeraj Singh, who co-wrote Nil Battey Sannata. With an experienced writing team and a story rooted in cricket history, the film has already attracted significant attention. Aamir Khan is set to portray Lala Amarnath, India’s first Test cricket captain after the country gained independence. The role is expected to showcase the legendary cricketer’s leadership and contribution to Indian cricket during its formative years. Production on Lalkaara is scheduled to begin on October 1 in Mumbai. With a refreshed cast, a celebrated filmmaker at the helm, and a story inspired by one of cricket’s most memorable eras, the film is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated sports dramas in the coming years.

Tanzid Hasan hits century as Bangladesh dominate Australia

Bangladesh strengthened their grip on the Darwin Test against Australia on Friday as opener Tanzid Hasan produced a memorable maiden Test century to put the visitors in a commanding position after the second day. Bangladesh finished the day on 351 for six, securing a valuable 153-run lead and leaving Australia facing an uphill battle in the opening Test. The biggest highlight was Tanzid, who marked only his second Test appearance with a composed century. The young opener spent nearly five hours at the crease, facing 197 deliveries and striking eight boundaries and one six on his way to three figures. His innings provided Bangladesh with the foundation they needed against a strong Australian attack. Tanzid first combined with Mominul Haque to build a 102-run partnership for the second wicket. He then continued Bangladesh’s progress alongside captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, with the pair adding another 93 runs. Shanto played a valuable supporting role before falling for 84, but Bangladesh refused to surrender their advantage despite Australia finding some success with the new ball. Australia managed to take three quick wickets with the second new ball, raising hopes of a late collapse. However, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Hasan Mahmud responded with disciplined batting to frustrate the hosts. The pair remained unbeaten at the close, putting together an important 43-run partnership for the seventh wicket and ensuring Bangladesh ended the day firmly in control. For Australia, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins claimed one wicket each, but their efforts were not enough to prevent Bangladesh from establishing a substantial advantage. Tanzid’s century was particularly significant given his limited Test experience. Having played only his second match in the format, he showed patience and maturity against one of the world’s most respected bowling attacks. With Bangladesh already 153 runs ahead and four wickets still in hand, Australia face a crucial third day in Darwin. The hosts will need early breakthroughs to prevent Bangladesh from turning their advantage into a potentially decisive position.

Javed Akhtar says internet discourages originality

Javed Akhtar has been writing words that endure for more than five decades, and in a candid conversation with Vogue India, he turned his gaze toward what he believes is happening to creativity in the digital age. What he found does not reassure him. The veteran lyricist and screenwriter argued that the internet and its algorithms have created a culture of creative fear, one in which people are no longer willing to take the risk of doing something that has not already been done before. “The echo chambers created by the internet have made most people afraid to do something for the first time,” he said. “Once someone else does it, they’re fine to follow in their footsteps.” He extended that observation into a broader concern about how people engage with ideas and the world around them. “People no longer want to pause, think, analyse or sit with an idea. They are living happily, so why would they bother to think about this universe or the vastness of nature? For them, it is a waste of time.” For Akhtar, this impatience is incompatible with the kind of work that lasts. “Meaningful creation requires time, discomfort and reflection,” he said, adding that his own willingness to question dominant voices and widely accepted ideologies has always come from exactly that kind of sustained engagement with ideas. He was particularly pointed about the music industry and the way commercial priorities have pushed the role of lyrics to the margins. “Today, words have become less important because the marketing team has decided that slow music won’t trend,” he said. The result, in his view, is an industry that remixes old material with inferior new writing rather than producing something genuinely fresh. “But then they take those same songs, edit the mukhras and remix them with some inferiorly written antaras. There was a time when writers had more space. Today, other forces dictate what music gets made. And yet, songs that are decades old still endure, while many recent ones have a short shelf life.” His advice to young writers was direct and unglamorous. Read more. Not only classical literature and celebrated authors, but light reading too. “The real loss is not in reading something trivial but in not reading at all,” he said. On the creative process itself, Akhtar drew a distinction that cuts to the heart of what separates craft from genuine art. “All arts can be divided into two parts. On one hand, there’s imagination, passion, fantasy and romance, and on the other, there is craft. You can learn the craft in a crash course. But imagining, fantasising and romanticising cannot be learned. There are no courses for yearning.” He closed with a lesson passed down from his father that has stayed with him throughout his career. “It is very easy to write in difficult language, but very difficult to write in easy language. When you write simply, there is no space for your idea to hide behind big words. Only if you are totally convinced of what you are writing can you afford to use transparent language.” It is a principle that has shaped some of Hindi cinema’s most enduring words, and one that no algorithm is likely to teach.

Samiya Hijab confesses feelings for Yasir Alam

Tamasha 5 continues to attract significant attention from viewers as the latest season of ARY Digital’s popular reality show brings new friendships, rivalries and emotional moments to the screen. Since its launch in 2022, the Big Brother-style reality series has developed a strong following across Pakistan and the wider Subcontinent. The show is produced by Salman Iqbal and Jarjees Seja and is hosted by Adnan Siddiqui. This season, several contestants have formed close bonds inside the Tamasha house, but the friendship between Samiya Hijab and Yasir Alam has become one of the most discussed relationships among viewers. Their growing connection has sparked interest, particularly after Samiya openly spoke about her feelings for Yasir during a recent episode. While having a conversation with Yasir, Samiya admitted that his success in one of the tasks made her genuinely happy. She recalled watching him thank the audience after winning and asking viewers to continue supporting him so that he could eventually take the Tamasha trophy home. Samiya revealed that she immediately responded by saying “In Sha Allah,” explaining that she normally does not use the phrase when talking about someone else’s success. Her reaction appeared to show just how strongly she has begun to care about Yasir and his journey on the show. She also acknowledged that both of them are competing for the same trophy and that, ideally, neither contestant wants to lose. However, Samiya said she had reached a point where Yasir’s victory would make her happy even if she could not achieve the same result herself. The Tamasha contestant also asked Yasir not to simply respond to her feelings because she tends to overthink such situations. Her comments reflected the emotional confusion she has been experiencing while trying to balance her personal feelings with the competitive nature of the reality show. Yasir, meanwhile, thanked Samiya for the unconditional support she had shown him during his task. In response, Samiya casually said that this was what friends were for, although her earlier comments suggested that their bond may have become more meaningful to her. Samiya later expressed her frustration about the situation and spoke about how difficult it has been for her to deal with her feelings for Yasir while living inside the Tamasha house. With contestants constantly surrounded by cameras, competition and emotional pressure, personal relationships can quickly become complicated. The growing bond between Samiya and Yasir has now become one of the season’s most talked-about dynamics. Whether their relationship remains a close friendship or develops into something more remains to be seen as Tamasha 5 progresses. For now, Samiya’s candid confession has given viewers another emotional storyline to follow, while Yasir’s response and their continued interactions are likely to receive even more attention in upcoming episodes.

Fresh PECTAA recruitment ad creates concern among …

Lahore: A newly issued recruitment advertisement by PECTAA and shared by the Punjab education minister on his social media handles, has sparked strong reactions and disappointment among thousands of job applicants across Punjab. Candidates have expressed their concerns over the decision to announce vacancies that, according to them, had already been advertised previously and for which the recruitment process had already begun. Applicants stated that the same positions were announced in July last year, following which thousands of candidates from different districts of Punjab completed the application procedure and appeared in the recruitment test conducted by PECTAA at Punjab University, Lahore. Many candidates invested significant time, effort, and money in preparing for the examination and completing all required formalities. However, despite the successful completion of the written test, the recruitment process was discontinued without any clear explanation. Candidates who had participated in the earlier process have been waiting for further updates and hoped that the authorities would complete the recruitment procedure based on the test results already obtained. Instead, PECTAA has recently issued a new advertisement for the same vacancies, requiring candidates to submit fresh applications and pay a new processing fee of Rs. 3,000 for each post. The decision has caused frustration among job seekers, who argue that they should not be forced to repeat the entire process or pay additional charges when they have already fulfilled the required criteria. Several candidates have criticised the move, describing it as an unnecessary financial burden on unemployed youth who are already facing difficult economic conditions. They claim that demanding another application fee from thousands of applicants creates additional hardship and raises questions about the transparency and fairness of the recruitment procedure. Responding to the concerns, PECTAA spokesperson Noorul Huda told Minute Mirror that the department decided to initiate another round of tests and interviews after failing to find suitable candidates for the advertised positions. When informed that applicants had already appeared in the written test and those who qualified had also been called for interviews, the spokesperson said that both the written test and the interview are necessary to determine a candidate’s suitability for recruitment. He also defended the decision to charge a fresh application fee for the new recruitment process. However, candidates maintained that the recruitment process itself imposes an additional financial burden, as PECTAA conducts both its written tests and interviews in Lahore. Applicants from across Punjab have to travel to the provincial capital for each stage of the recruitment process, resulting in considerable transportation and accommodation expenses. The affected candidates have strongly appealed to PECTAA officials to reconsider the decision and acknowledge the applications submitted during the previous recruitment drive. They have demanded that the authorities complete the pending recruitment process using the test results of candidates who already appeared in the examination. According to the protesting applicants, restarting the entire process not only wastes the efforts of thousands of candidates but also creates uncertainty about the future of those who have already invested months preparing for the opportunity. They believe that conducting another recruitment cycle for the same positions is unfair unless there is a valid reason and proper justification from the concerned department. Candidates have also requested the Punjab Government and senior officials to intervene in the matter and investigate the issue. They urged the authorities to provide relief by accepting the previous applications, avoiding unnecessary fee collection, and ensuring that the recruitment process is conducted in a transparent and merit-based manner. The applicants said that unemployed youth across Punjab are looking toward government institutions for fair opportunities and expect recruitment systems to protect their time, effort, and financial investments. They called for immediate action from relevant authorities so that the recruitment process can move forward without causing further inconvenience to candidates.

Thailand school shooting, teen kills 8 in deadly r…

BANGKOK: A 14-year-old boy killed at least eight people, including his grandparents, before taking his own life in a shooting rampage at a school outside Bangkok on Friday, police said, in Thailand’s deadliest mass killing since 2022. The teenager opened fire at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi province, northwest of Bangkok, after allegedly shooting his grandparents at their home. Police said the suspect was among those killed at the school. The attack left 15 people injured, with both students and teachers reported among the casualties. Emergency teams rushed to the school as frightened students streamed out of the building, many without shoes, while ambulances transported the wounded. Police said the teenager fired at least 26 rounds and had another 34 rounds of ammunition. Authorities said the weapon belonged to his grandfather. An 18-year-old student told Reuters he initially believed the loud noises were firecrackers or someone striking an object. He said the sounds stopped briefly before gunfire erupted again. Emergency worker Kiatikhun Verapongpradith said his team arrived while the shooting was still underway and treated students suffering injuries. He said teachers were also among those found injured or dead inside the school. The suspect was later found after apparently shooting himself, according to the emergency worker. He was taken to hospital, but authorities confirmed that he died. Education Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong said both teachers and students were among the casualties, while police identified the teenager as a student. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed sorrow over the incident, describing the shooting as a devastating event for the country. The attack is Thailand’s second school shooting this year. In February, a teacher was killed and a student injured in a shooting at a school in the southern part of the country. Thailand has experienced several deadly gun attacks in recent years. The country’s worst mass killing in recent history occurred in 2022, when a former police officer killed 36 people, including 22 children, during a rampage at a daycare centre in northeastern Thailand. A separate 2023 shooting at a Bangkok shopping centre, carried out by another 14-year-old, killed two people and injured five others. Following that attack, authorities introduced several gun-control measures, including restrictions on new firearm licences and tighter rules concerning access to shooting ranges by people under 20. Thailand has one of Southeast Asia’s highest rates of civilian gun ownership. A Small Arms Survey estimate from 2017 put the number of privately held firearms in the country at around 10.3 million. Friday’s tragedy is expected to renew debate over firearm access, school safety and measures aimed at preventing young people from obtaining weapons.
