Farhan Akhtar exits Aamir Khan’s Lalkaara, Sidhant Gupta joins cast

A major casting change has taken place in Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker’s upcoming sports drama Lalkaara, with Farhan Akhtar stepping away from the project and actor Sidhant Gupta coming on board as his replacement.

Farhan was initially expected to play a key role in the film, but he has reportedly withdrawn because of scheduling conflicts with another ambitious project. The actor is preparing for a biographical film based on the life of legendary music composer R.D. Burman, a role that requires significant preparation and a long production schedule.

At the same time, Lalkaara is expected to demand extensive cricket training from its cast, along with a lengthy shooting schedule. Balancing both productions reportedly proved difficult, leading Farhan to prioritize the R.D. Burman biopic and step away from his acting commitment in the sports drama.

Despite his exit from the cast, Farhan remains closely associated with Lalkaara in his capacity as a producer. The film is being backed by Excel Entertainment, led by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, in collaboration with Rajkumar Hirani Films. His continued involvement ensures that he remains an important part of the project behind the scenes.

Following Farhan’s departure, the filmmakers finalized Sidhant Gupta for the role. The actor has steadily built a strong reputation through performances in acclaimed projects such as Inside Edge, Jubilee, Black Warrant, and Freedom at Midnight. His addition to Lalkaara is expected to bring fresh energy to the ensemble cast.

Sidhant will reportedly portray one of the close friends of Aamir Khan’s character in the film. While details about his role have been kept under wraps, his casting marks another significant milestone in his growing career, as he joins one of the most anticipated Bollywood projects currently in development.

Lalkaara is based on the historic 1952 India-Pakistan Test cricket series, a landmark chapter in the history of cricket between the two neighbouring nations. The film aims to blend sports, history and drama, revisiting a defining moment in Indian cricket through a cinematic narrative.

The project is also notable for reuniting Aamir Khan with director Ashutosh Gowariker after their iconic collaboration on Lagaan, the Oscar-nominated sports drama that remains one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated films. Their reunion has generated considerable excitement among fans, who are eager to see the duo work together again after more than two decades.

The screenplay has been written by Piyush Gupta, known for his work on Dangal and Chhichhore, alongside Neeraj Singh, who co-wrote Nil Battey Sannata. With an experienced writing team and a story rooted in cricket history, the film has already attracted significant attention.

Aamir Khan is set to portray Lala Amarnath, India’s first Test cricket captain after the country gained independence. The role is expected to showcase the legendary cricketer’s leadership and contribution to Indian cricket during its formative years.

He added that around 89 percent of the newly disbursed loans were directed toward major productive sectors, including manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade, and agriculture. According to Shahzad, the manufacturing sector alone received fresh financing of Rs657 billion, enabling industries to expand production capacity, modernize operations, and meet growing market demand. He said the significant flow of funds into manufacturing demonstrates renewed confidence in Pakistan’s industrial sector. He further stated that increased financial support for the trade and agriculture sectors has contributed to higher production, stronger commercial activity, and improved investment by private businesses. Enhanced credit availability, he said, is helping enterprises expand operations, create employment opportunities, and strengthen overall economic performance. Shahzad described the record lending as a positive indicator of the country’s economic recovery, saying that rising private-sector borrowing reflects improving investor sentiment and greater confidence in Pakistan’s financial system. He added that sustained access to bank financing would remain essential for maintaining economic momentum, boosting productivity, and supporting long-term, sustainable growth.

    Federal government freezes ad hoc relief allowance…

    The federal government has decided to keep the 2023 and 2024 ad hoc relief allowances unchanged for its employees, maintaining the existing rates while also outlining the allowance structure for newly appointed staff. According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Finance, the Ad Hoc Relief Allowance-2023 will remain frozen at the level applicable on June 30, 2023, and will not be revised until further instructions are issued. Under the current arrangement, employees in Grades 1 to 16 will continue to receive an allowance equal to 35% of their basic pay, while officers in Grades 17 to 22 will receive 30% of their basic pay under the 2023 relief allowance. The ministry has also announced that the Ad Hoc Relief Allowance-2024 will remain frozen at the rates applicable on June 30, 2026. Employees in Grades 1 to 16 will continue to receive 25% of their basic pay, whereas those in Grades 17 to 22 will receive 20% of their basic pay. The decision means there will be no increase in these allowances until further notice, although eligible employees will continue receiving them at the existing rates. The notification also provides guidance on the applicable allowance rates for newly recruited federal government employees, ensuring uniform implementation across government departments. The Finance Ministry said the revised pay and allowance framework will remain effective unless amended through a future government notification.

    ISLAMABAD: A laboratory assessment has found that 176 out of 491 samples of packaged edible oil, ghee and milk failed to meet national quality standards. According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Planning, a total of 491 samples of packaged cooking oil, ghee and milk products were tested. Of these, 315 samples were found to comply with national standards, while 176 were declared substandard. The ministry said approximately 36% of the tested samples failed to meet the required quality standards. The assessment showed significant variations across different products. Of the 204 samples of vanaspati ghee tested, 98 were found to be below the required standards. Similarly, 40 out of 146 samples of blended cooking oil failed the quality assessment, while 26 of 104 samples of packaged liquid milk were declared substandard. The report also found quality concerns in milk powder, refined palm oil and refined canola oil. Eight of the 18 milk powder samples failed to meet national standards, while three of four refined palm oil samples were found to be substandard. In the case of refined canola oil, one out of 13 tested samples did not meet the required standards. The findings have highlighted concerns over the quality of commonly consumed food products and the need for stronger monitoring and enforcement to ensure that packaged edible oils, ghee and dairy products available in the market comply with national quality requirements.

Messages of solidarity were issued by senior government officials, provincial leaders, parliamentarians and political parties, all reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to supporting the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination. Rallies, public gatherings and awareness events were also held in different parts of the country to mark the occasion. He alleged that demographic changes were being introduced in the disputed territory through settlement policies. PPP Parliamentarians Secretary General Nayyar Bukhari Meanwhile, Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians Secretary General Nayyar Bukhari said the revocation of Kashmir’s special status had failed to weaken the freedom movement. He warned that policies pursued by the Indian government could further undermine regional peace and stability. The observance of Kashmir Exploitation Day concluded with renewed calls from Pakistan’s political leadership for greater international engagement on the Kashmir dispute. Leaders urged the United Nations and the global community to work towards a peaceful resolution of the issue in accordance with international law and the wishes of the Kashmiri people.

    PMDC issues advisory for Afghan medical students

    The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has issued an advisory for Pakistani students pursuing or planning to pursue medical and dental education in Afghanistan, warning that graduates from Afghan institutions will not be eligible to practise medicine in Pakistan. According to the advisory, medical and dental graduates from Afghanistan will not be able to obtain registration with the PMDC, making them ineligible to work as licensed healthcare professionals in the country. The council stated that medical institutions in Afghanistan are not included in the recognised list of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). As a result, graduates from these institutions will also be barred from appearing in Pakistan’s National Registration Examination (NRE), a mandatory requirement for obtaining a medical licence. PMDC advised Pakistani students to carefully verify whether a foreign medical institution is recognised by the ECFMG before seeking admission. The council stressed that enrolling in an unrecognised institution could prevent graduates from securing professional registration and practising medicine in Pakistan. The advisory aims to help students make informed decisions about pursuing medical education abroad and to avoid academic and professional complications after graduation. PMDC urged aspiring medical students to ensure that any foreign institution they choose meets internationally recognised accreditation standards before finalising their admissions.
