Babar Azam returns to ICC Test top 10 after West Indies series

DUBAI: Pakistan Test captain Babar Azam has climbed back into the ICC’s top 10 Test batting rankings after producing a series of important performances against the West Indies.

Babar moved up five places to 10th in the latest rankings released on Wednesday, marking his first return to the elite group since September 2024. The rise comes as the Pakistan captain looks to rebuild his standing in Test cricket following a prolonged period outside the top 10.

The 31-year-old played an important role in Pakistan’s campaign in the Caribbean, particularly during the second Test at Queen’s Park Oval. Pakistan won the match by eight wickets, securing an away Test victory after a wait of more than three years and levelling the two-match series 1-1.

Babar made a significant contribution in the decisive match, scoring 88 runs in Pakistan’s first innings before finishing unbeaten on 24 during the successful chase. He had also made 23 and an unbeaten 58 in the opening Test, although Pakistan eventually suffered a 90-run defeat.

His consistent performances have now been reflected in the latest rankings, providing another boost to the Pakistan captain as the team prepares for its upcoming Test assignments.

Babar was not the only Pakistan batter to make substantial progress. Abdullah Shafique made one of the biggest jumps in the rankings after an outstanding return to the Test side.

Playing his first Test since October 2025, Shafique struck an unbeaten 160 in the second Test. His innings helped Pakistan secure a 43-run first-innings lead and played a key role in setting up the victory.

Shafique climbed an impressive 25 places to 32nd in the Test batting rankings.

Pakistan also saw movement in the bowling and all-rounder rankings. Off-spinner Sajid Khan rose five places to 30th among Test bowlers after his performances in the Caribbean. He also climbed five spots to 32nd in the Test all-rounders’ rankings.

At the top of the batting chart, Australia’s Travis Head retained the No. 1 position, while India’s Jasprit Bumrah remained the leading Test bowler.

India’s Ravindra Jadeja continued to dominate the Test all-rounders’ rankings.

Babar’s return to the top 10 gives Pakistan another reason for optimism, while Shafique’s rapid rise underlines the growing depth of the team’s batting options.

He was known within the party as a loyal worker and a committed representative who remained dedicated to serving the people. Following the news of his death, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed profound sorrow and extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. In his condolence message, the prime minister praised the late lawmaker’s political, social and public contributions. He said Malik Iqbal Channar devoted his life to serving the people and strengthening the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz through his commitment and hard work. The passing of Malik Iqbal Channar marks the end of a long political career spent in public service. Several leading British retailers, including Tesco, Asda, and Next, have adopted the company’s technology. According to Geek+, the robots help businesses process orders faster, improve storage capacity, and reduce mistakes by automating repetitive tasks that would otherwise require significant manual labour. Unlike traditional warehouse automation systems that depend on fixed conveyor belts and expensive infrastructure, these mobile robots move independently using floor markers and safety barriers. This allows companies to introduce automation more quickly and with less disruption to existing warehouse operations. Geek+ has grown into the world’s largest supplier of autonomous mobile robots and expanded its international presence after listing on the Hong Kong stock exchange last year. Britain has become the company’s biggest European market, with its UK partner MotionTech deploying more than 2,000 robots across 10 warehouse sites. MotionTech says demand for automated warehouse technology continues to rise as businesses seek faster order processing while dealing with persistent labour shortages. Company representatives say customers want solutions that increase storage capacity, improve picking speeds, and reduce reliance on large workforces without sacrificing efficiency. The growing use of robotics comes as the United Kingdom continues to struggle with weak productivity growth. Economists have argued that wider adoption of automation will be necessary if businesses are to remain competitive in the years ahead. A recent report by the Organisation for Economic Co operation and Development found that Britain has been slower than many other advanced economies in adopting robotics, despite its long industrial history. While British companies have embraced many digital technologies, the report said automation and robotics remain underused across much of the economy. Labour organisations have urged businesses to introduce new technology responsibly. The Trades Union Congress has argued that automation should improve working conditions and productivity rather than simply reduce employment. It has called for workers to be involved in decisions about automation and for companies to provide retraining opportunities as technology changes the workplace. China’s rapid progress in robotics reflects a broader national strategy aimed at strengthening advanced manufacturing. President Xi Jinping has identified robotics as one of the country’s key future industries, with automation expected to offset the effects of a shrinking working age population and support long term economic growth. Analysts say China’s leadership in robotics has benefited from its success in electric vehicle manufacturing. Many of the same technologies used in electric cars, including batteries, motors, cameras, sensors, and semiconductors, are now being applied to robotic systems, creating a strong industrial network that accelerates development. Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer XPeng is among the companies expanding into robotics. The company has introduced a humanoid robot called Iron as part of its strategy to transform from a traditional carmaker into a broader technology company. Industry experts believe China’s robotics industry could follow a similar path to its electric vehicle sector by combining large scale manufacturing with rapid innovation. At the same time, competition in robotics has become increasingly tied to global politics. This week the United States announced restrictions on imports of new advanced foreign made robots, citing national security concerns. China criticised the decision, accusing Washington of using trade measures for political purposes. Looking ahead, Geek+ says it wants to move beyond transporting goods and eventually create fully automated warehouses where robots handle picking, moving, and packing products with minimal human involvement. While companies across China are investing heavily in humanoid robots capable of performing more complex tasks, experts believe these machines are still several years away from widespread commercial use. For now, wheeled warehouse robots remain the most practical solution for retailers. As British businesses continue searching for ways to improve productivity and overcome staffing shortages, warehouses across the country are becoming an important testing ground for China’s rapidly expanding robotics industry.

The singer addressed the cancellations in a statement shared by the venues. “As I navigate some personal circumstances, I unfortunately need to cancel a portion of my upcoming performance dates,” Batiste said. Despite the cancellations, Batiste assured fans that he remains committed to his music. He also highlighted his upcoming albums, Monk Meditations and Monk Movements. The musician said his team is looking for new ways to share his music with fans. He also expressed hope that he would be able to return to live performances soon. Batiste and Jaouad have remained supportive of each other throughout her health struggles. The couple married in 2022 after years of being together. Although Batiste did not specifically mention his wife’s cancer in his concert cancellation statement, the announcement comes during a particularly challenging period for the couple. The military leadership paid homage to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the countless individuals who made sacrifices for the creation and protection of Pakistan. The statement highlighted that the vision, courage and determination of the country’s founders continue to guide the nation and inspire people to uphold Pakistan’s core values. The Armed Forces also honoured the sacrifices of martyrs and acknowledged the contributions of veterans and former service personnel who served the country with dedication. ISPR further recognized the efforts of law-enforcement personnel and citizens serving the nation in different capacities. It said the sacrifices of martyrs, the courage of ghazis, the commitment of law-enforcement agencies and the collective efforts of Pakistanis have played a vital role in strengthening the country’s resilience. The Armed Forces reaffirmed their commitment to the ideals on which Pakistan was founded and called for continued national unity, dedication and service to the country on this historic Independence Day.
