Pakistan dismisses Indian defence minister’s Azad Kashmir threats as attempt to hide domestic turmoil

Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has forcefully rejected comments by his Indian counterpart, Rajnath Singh, who declared that New Delhi would only hold talks on Azad Kashmir, claimed the Pakistani-administered region as an “integral part of India”, and warned that any attempt to undermine Indian sovereignty would invite a “decisive response” from its armed forces. Singh had also accused Islamabad of continuing to sponsor “terrorism” against India.

Asif hit back directly, stating that Singh’s aggressive rhetoric was a clear attempt to “deflect the attention from internal turmoil and increasing unrest” following mass protests against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

He warned New Delhi against distortion and military posturing, emphasising that while Pakistan remains committed to peace, its resolve to defend its sovereignty is absolute and must never be tested.

The Pakistani Foreign Office echoed these concerns, calling on the United Nations to hold India accountable to Security Council resolutions guaranteeing the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.

Hassan Murtaza slams alleged AJK rigging

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Central Punjab General Secretary Hassan Murtaza has accused the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of rigging in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections. Murtaza said the election process was marred by serious violations of the electoral code of conduct. He alleged that the rules were repeatedly ignored during polling. He made these remarks while addressing a press conference in Lahore. Murtaza also criticised the role of the Election Commission during the elections. He alleged that the commission failed to perform its duties impartially. According to him, it appeared to be acting like an election agent instead of an independent institution. The PPP leader strongly criticised the PML-N over the election results. He accused the party of setting a new example of electoral manipulation. “You steal the mandate of whoever you want,” Murtaza said while criticising the PML-N. He also referred to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s statements about AJK. Murtaza said Sharif was now visiting Kashmir and calling for himself to be made prime minister. The PPP leader said the current political situation in AJK was also linked to the sacrifices and political role of the PPP. Murtaza said that if Nawaz Sharif was able to go to Kashmir today and demand the prime minister’s position, it was partly because of the PPP’s political contribution. The PPP leader also raised serious concerns over violence during the polling process. He said a PPP worker was killed on election day. Murtaza described the incident as a serious matter that would remain part of the political record. He said history would record what happened during the elections. It would also establish who was responsible for the violence and who lost his life. The allegations came after the PML-N emerged as the leading party in the first phase of the AJK elections. The party secured nine seats, according to the results cited in the report

US House approves $1.15 trillion defense budget package

The US House of Representatives has passed a $1.15 trillion defense budget bill by a narrow vote of 216 to 212. Supported by a majority of Republicans and six Democrats, the legislation includes provisions to deepen defense ties and military technology integration with Israel. The bill faced internal pushback, with Congressman Thomas Massie raising concerns over integrating US military technology and supply chains with Israel. The passage follows a major funding request from the Trump administration, which asked Congress for nearly $87 billion in supplemental appropriations to support ongoing operations against Iran. Appropriations Committee, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that military action against Iran has cost $37.5 billion so far, including projected costs through September 30. Hegseth urged lawmakers to maintain robust military spending, arguing that failing to provide the full defense budget represents the single greatest threat to national security.

Australia drop Weatherald, recall Renshaw for Bangladesh Test

MELBOURNE: Australia have made a change to their squad for the second Test against Bangladesh, dropping opener Jake Weatherald and recalling Matt Renshaw after a shock nine-wicket defeat in Darwin. Weatherald’s removal is the only change to Australia’s 13-man squad, but it could have wider implications for the team’s batting order. The 30-year-old struggled in the opening Test, scoring 23 in the first innings before being dismissed for a duck in the second. His difficult start has added to concerns over his Test credentials. Weatherald has now played six Tests and has managed 224 runs at an average of 20.36, leaving selectors with little choice but to make a change as Australia look to level the two-match series. Renshaw, meanwhile, returns to the Test setup after an absence of more than three years. The left-hander last played a Test for Australia in 2023 and has earned his recall after an impressive Sheffield Shield campaign. The Queensland batter scored 499 runs in six Sheffield Shield matches last season at an average of 49.90, including three centuries. His domestic form had already put him firmly in contention for a return to the national red-ball side, and the latest selection gives him another chance to revive his Test career. Renshaw’s return could also add experience and stability to an Australian batting line-up that was exposed by Bangladesh in Darwin. Australia were beaten by nine wickets in the first Test, suffering a result that put Bangladesh 1-0 ahead in the series. Travis Head is expected to continue opening the innings, while Renshaw is in line to partner him at the top of the order. The combination will be closely watched as Australia attempt to respond to their unexpected home defeat. Attention will also remain on Marnus Labuschagne, who is under pressure to produce a substantial score. Labuschagne managed only 32 runs across the first Test, and his place is increasingly being discussed amid competition for batting positions. Australia will need a much stronger collective performance in the second Test. Bangladesh demonstrated in Darwin that they can challenge the hosts in their own conditions, making the upcoming contest an important test of Australia’s ability to recover quickly. The second Test is scheduled to begin in Mackay on Saturday, with Australia aiming to draw the series and Bangladesh seeking another historic result. The changes ensure the second Test will carry significant pressure for Australia’s top order. Australia squad: Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Matthew Renshaw, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Beau Webster

Andrew Garfield sets his terms for a Spider-Man return

Andrew Garfield has finally given fans a real answer on when he might swing back into the Spider-Man suit. The 42-year-old actor first played the superhero in The Amazing Spider-Man and its 2014 sequel. He returned briefly in 2021, teaming up with Tobey Maguire for a surprise cameo in Tom Holland’s No Way Home. That appearance only fueled the speculation. Fans have been asking him about a full comeback ever since, and Garfield has mostly dodged the question with vague replies. That changed recently. With Brand New Day now out in theatres, the topic resurfaced in a new interview, and this time Garfield spelled out his actual condition. He said any future project would need to feel nothing like the Spider-Man stories audiences already know. The actor wants something genuinely unexpected, a version of the character dropped into a completely different kind of film. As an example, he floated the idea of a road trip movie built around Spider-Man, something far removed from the usual superhero formula. The comment set off a wave of reactions online. Fans have started pitching their own concepts for what a Garfield return could look like. Much of the excitement ties back to a running theory that Tom Holland’s latest Spider-Man film quietly teased Miles Morales through a post-credits scene. Riding that theory, one fan on X proposed that Garfield’s Spider-Man could take on a mentor role opposite Miles, rather than headline another solo outing. There’s also a sense among supporters that Garfield has been shortchanged by the studio. Both Maguire and Holland got three Spider-Man films apiece, while Garfield only appeared in two before his brief cameo. Many fans see that gap as proof he deserves another proper shot at the role. For now, nothing is confirmed. But Garfield’s comments make one thing clear: a simple return to the character wouldn’t be enough for him. He’s looking for something that reinvents what a Spider-Man movie can even be, not just another sequel wearing the same mask. Whether Sony or Marvel ever build a project around that idea is still unknown. Until then, Garfield’s fans will keep speculating, and keep hoping he gets the film he’s actually asking for.

Supreme Court to hear suspension pleas of Imaan Ma…

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has scheduled for hearing the petitions seeking suspension of the sentences awarded to Imaan Mazari and Hadi Chattha in a case related to controversial social media posts. According to details, a two-member bench of the Supreme Court will hear the petitions on August 19. The bench will be headed by Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan, while Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim will also be part of the bench. The petitions have been filed seeking suspension of the sentences imposed on Imaan Mazari and Hadi Chattha in connection with the controversial tweets case. The court has issued notices to all parties involved in the case and will hear their respective positions during the upcoming proceedings. The scheduling of the petitions before the Supreme Court marks another stage in the legal proceedings involving the two individuals. The case has attracted attention because it concerns social media posts and the legal consequences arising from content published on digital platforms. The applicants are seeking relief from the sentences imposed against them while their legal challenge proceeds before the superior court. The Supreme Court will examine the suspension requests during the hearing and consider the arguments presented by both the petitioners and the opposing parties. The two-member bench headed by Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan is expected to hear the legal arguments concerning the basis of the sentences, the circumstances surrounding the disputed social media posts and the grounds presented by the applicants for suspension of their sentences. Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim will serve as the second member of the bench. Notices have already been issued to the parties concerned, formally informing them of the hearing and providing them an opportunity to present their positions before the court. The proceedings are expected to focus specifically on the requests for suspension of the sentences rather than constituting a final determination of all aspects of the underlying case. The court may consider the legal arguments and relevant circumstances before deciding whether the sentences should be suspended. Cases involving social media content have increasingly become an important part of Pakistan’s legal landscape as courts deal with questions concerning online expression, the limits of digital communication and the application of existing laws to content published on social media platforms. The matter involving Mazari and Chattha has also drawn public attention because of the nature of the allegations and the penalties imposed in connection with the disputed posts. Their petitions before the Supreme Court represent an attempt to obtain relief from the sentences through the country’s highest court. The issuance of notices to the parties means that the respondents will have an opportunity to submit their arguments when the matter comes up for hearing. The final outcome will depend on the arguments presented before the bench and the court’s assessment of the applicable legal provisions and circumstances of the case. The hearing is scheduled for August 19, when the two-member bench will take up the suspension petitions. Any decision by the Supreme Court at that stage could have a significant impact on the immediate legal position of Imaan Mazari and Hadi Chattha. For now, the petitions remain pending before the Supreme Court, and the court will determine the next course of action after hearing the parties involved.
