Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to promote peace and stability, including its role in mediating during the recent US-Iran tensions, were highlighted at an Independence Day ceremony held at Pakistan House in New York.

Speaking at the event, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, said Pakistan had consistently sought peaceful solutions amid growing international instability and conflicts. He urged renewed commitment to the country’s founding principles, sovereignty, security, peace and socio-economic progress.

The ambassador paid tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, describing him as a visionary statesman whose leadership led to the creation of Pakistan. Reflecting on the country’s journey since independence, he praised the resilience and achievements of Pakistanis despite significant challenges.

Ahmad also commended the armed forces for their sacrifices in defending the country and protecting its people, while recognising the achievements of Pakistanis abroad in fields ranging from innovation and sports to the arts.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s diplomatic and political support for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir and for the rights of Palestinians. He also stressed the importance of combating terrorism while advancing economic development and national progress.

Consul General Aamer Ahmad Atozai also paid tribute to the leaders and workers of the Pakistan Movement, emphasising that freedom carries both a legacy and a responsibility. He highlighted the Pakistani-American community’s contributions through investment, remittances, philanthropy and expertise, describing it as an important bridge between Pakistan and the United States.

The ceremony featured the hoisting of the Pakistani flag and the national anthem, while messages from Pakistan’s leadership were also read out. Addressing children at the gathering, Ambassador Ahmad described them as the country’s future and called for collective efforts to build a peaceful, prosperous and inclusive Pakistan.

The event concluded with calls for greater national unity and continued commitment to peace, diplomacy and Pakistan’s progress on the global stage.

    PTI founder not in solitary confinement

      The Islamabad High Court on Thursday heard petitions challenging the alleged solitary confinement of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi. During the proceedings, Advocate General (AG) Islamabad Naveed Hayat Malik informed the court that the two prisoners were not kept in solitary confinement, adding that they were being provided facilities even better than B-class prison standards. Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro presided over the hearing. The petitioners were represented by Barrister Salman Safdar, while the jail superintendent was also present in the courtroom and submitted a detailed report regarding the facilities provided to the high-profile inmates. Advocate General Malik clarified that the detainees were not isolated due to punitive measures but as a security protocol. He noted that the inability of petitioners’ families to meet them did not constitute solitary confinement. Meanwhile, Jail Superintendent Sajid Beg explained that solitary confinement legally means locking an inmate in a single cell for 24 hours—which, he emphasized, was not the case for Imran Khan. The PTI founder, he said, was housed in a compound consisting of seven interconnected cells, allowing free movement. Additionally, a convicted inmate was permanently assigned to accompany him, further disproving the solitary confinement claim. The superintendent also disclosed the amenities provided to Khan. He was given access to a television set, newspapers, and books. Both Urdu and English dailies are being delivered daily, and more than 500 books have been provided to him so far—with nine more recently added to his cell. However, Barrister Salman Safdar, representing the petitioners, painted a contrasting picture. He informed the court that on the Supreme Court’s directive, he had visited Imran Khan as a friend of the court and noticed his deteriorating eyesight. According to Safdar, Khan expressed satisfaction with his food, security, and bathroom facilities but pleaded: “Just save my eyesight.” Safdar further alleged that for seven months, he was not allowed to meet his client, and it was only after the intervention of the Chief Justice that a meeting was arranged in April, lasting barely 65 minutes. Out of that brief meeting, the PTI founder spent 60 minutes complaining about mental torture and restrictions on meetings. He claimed he was under 22-hour isolation while Bushra Bibi faced 24-hour confinement. Safdar also pointed out that the TV provided in the cell had no functioning channels. In a disturbing revelation, Safdar informed the court that Imran Khan’s 68-year-old sister, Aleema Khanum, visited Adiala Jail 38 times without being granted a single meeting. The PTI founder has also been deprived of telephonic conversations with his sons for the last eight months. Safdar argued that this psychological torture is far more severe than physical violence and urged the court to intervene. He requested that a panel of three lawyers be formed to visit the jail and independently assess the conditions. He also demanded that Imran Khan be allowed a weekly phone call with his sons and that the jail authorities submit an affidavit committing to this arrangement. Justice Soomro noted that he had previously visited jails in Sindh when he was a senior judge there, but Aleema Khanum interjected, urging the judge to personally visit Adiala Jail to ascertain the reality. After hearing all parties, the court directed them to submit written reports and relevant legal references, after which an appropriate order would be issued.

    Taiwan condemns planned Chinese navy drills with Indonesia as dangerous provocation

    Taiwan’s government has strongly condemned planned Chinese naval drills with an Indonesian warship off its eastern coast, accusing Beijing of political manipulation to project fake territorial jurisdiction over international waters in the Pacific. China’s Defence Ministry announced on Tuesday that it would conduct a joint “navigation exercise” with the Indonesian navy in mid-August in waters east of Taiwan. Joint exercises between Chinese forces and foreign militaries near Taiwan remain exceptionally rare. Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council called the announcement a military provocation, stating Beijing was attempting to create a false impression in the international community that it holds sovereign rights off Taiwan’s eastern coast. Addressing parliament in Taipei on Wednesday, Wu Tien-jen, assistant deputy chief of the general staff for intelligence, clarified that the Indonesian vessel was currently returning from Japan rather than deploying specifically for joint drills with Beijing. “Militarily this does not have a direct impact on Taiwan,” Wu said, adding that the vessel was operating 70 to 80 nautical miles off the coast. “It has a geopolitical significance.” Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry confirmed it has requested formal clarification from Jakarta regarding its involvement. Indonesia, which maintains no formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, has not issued an official response. The dispute coincides with Taiwan conducting its annual Han Kuang military exercises to simulate defences against a potential Chinese invasion, as well as high-level defence meetings between US and Indonesian officials in Jakarta.

    Monsoon rains trigger flood warnings across Pakistan

    Persistent monsoon rains continued to lash several parts of Pakistan on Tuesday, triggering fresh flood alerts, increasing river flows, and prompting disaster management authorities to remain on high alert as another spell of rain is expected over the next 24 to 48 hours. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), weak monsoon currents are currently affecting the country’s upper and eastern regions, while a westerly weather system continues to influence northwestern areas. The department has forecast humid weather across much of Pakistan, with rain and thunderstorms likely in Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Punjab through Wednesday. The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) reported that the Indus River remains in a low flood situation at Kalabagh and Chashma, while water levels in all other major rivers are currently within normal limits or below the low-flood threshold. Authorities believe the overall hydrological situation is expected to remain stable over the next 24 hours, although scattered rainfall in the upper catchments may slightly increase river flows. Chenab River Under Close Watch Officials are closely monitoring the Chenab River after India released additional water from the Baglihar Dam following heavy rainfall in the upper catchment of the river. According to available reports, three spillway gates of the dam were opened on Monday, adding to the two spillways that had already been opened several days earlier, resulting in higher downstream water flows. In response, the FFD has issued a low to medium flood alert for Head Marala during the next 24 hours. The latest hydrological data shows inflows of approximately 93,900 cusecs, while outflows stand at around 76,200 cusecs. Forecasts indicate inflows may range between 80,000 and 100,000 cusecs, with the river expected to remain in the low flood category. Heavy Rainfall Recorded Across the Country During the last 24 hours, widespread rainfall was reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir. Among the highest rainfall recorded by the PMD, Saidu Sharif received 86 millimetres, Kakul 71 millimetres, and Faisalabad 77 millimetres. Meanwhile, Sibbi remained the hottest city in the country with a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius. The FFD’s rainfall monitoring system recorded exceptionally heavy downpours in Faisalabad, where Ghulam Muhammad Abad Water Works received 126 millimetres of rain, while the WASA Head Office recorded 123 millimetres. Significant rainfall was also reported in Lahore, Sialkot, Gujrat, and several surrounding areas. PDMA Warns of Urban Flooding and Landslides Punjab’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) stated that monsoon rains affected most districts of the province over the past day. The authority said advance planning, timely deployment of drainage machinery, and emergency response teams helped clear accumulated rainwater from urban areas despite the heavy showers. The PDMA warned that the current monsoon spell is likely to continue until August 5, with additional rainfall in upper catchment areas expected to increase water levels in eastern rivers and seasonal streams. Authorities have cautioned that urban flooding remains a significant risk in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Faisalabad, and Multan. At the same time, the possibility of landslides persists in Murree, Galliyat, and other mountainous regions due to continuous rainfall. Authorities Urge Public to Take Precautions Disaster management authorities have established flood relief camps in vulnerable districts to facilitate emergency response if required. Residents living near riverbanks, seasonal streams, and flood-prone areas have been advised to relocate to safer locations as a precaution.

Heavy or persistent rainfall in these areas could result in water accumulating on roads, underpasses and other low-lying locations, potentially disrupting traffic and routine activities. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, low to moderate flooding has also been forecast in rivers, streams and rain-fed waterways in Chitral, Upper Dir, Abbottabad, Shangla, Khyber, Orakzai, Kohat, Tank and North and South Waziristan. Authorities have urged local administrations and disaster-management agencies in vulnerable districts to maintain close coordination and monitor developments, particularly in areas located near rivers, streams and seasonal rain drains. Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas have been advised to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall and stay informed about weather and flood alerts issued by the relevant authorities. The latest warnings come as the country continues to monitor the impact of the ongoing monsoon activity, which can cause sudden increases in river flows and urban flooding in areas receiving intense or prolonged rainfall.
