Mariyam Nafees calls for priority queues for vulnerable people

Pakistani actor and host Mariyam Nafees has called for the introduction of separate priority queues in Pakistan for people who may find it difficult to stand in regular lines for long periods.

The actor raised the issue during a special Independence Day episode of Good Morning Pakistan, where she appeared alongside Sarwat Gillani, Amar Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Mohsin Abbas and Omair Rana.

During the programme, Mariyam highlighted the difficulties faced by elderly people, pregnant women, young children and individuals with disabilities or health problems when they have to wait in long queues.

She said priority lines are commonly available in many countries to facilitate people who need special consideration. In her view, young and physically fit individuals can generally wait longer, while vulnerable people may not be able to do so comfortably.

Mariyam said Pakistan should also consider introducing dedicated queues at public offices and other places where people regularly have to wait for services.

She stressed that simply allowing vulnerable people to move ahead is not always effective because some members of the public may ignore their needs. According to her, a formal priority system could make the process more organised and ensure that deserving people receive timely assistance.

The actor’s comments focused on the broader issue of public behaviour and social responsibility. She suggested that a structured system could reduce disputes and make public spaces more accessible for those who need additional consideration.

During the discussion, Saif Ali Khan also supported the broader point. He noted that the problem is not limited to queue arrangements.

He pointed out that people sometimes give preference to friends, relatives or acquaintances at offices and other places. He argued that such preferential treatment should also be discouraged.

The discussion drew attention to the importance of fairness in public spaces and equal access to services. Mariyam’s remarks have also sparked conversation about whether Pakistan should introduce more formal systems to assist elderly citizens, pregnant women, children and people with disabilities.

Karachi seals 200 shops in Saddar over fire safety…

The Karachi administration has sealed 200 shops in Saddar for violating fire safety regulations, as authorities intensify efforts to enforce safety standards across commercial areas. The action was taken after inspections revealed that several businesses were operating without complying with mandatory fire safety requirements. The action was taken after inspections revealed that several businesses were operating without complying with mandatory fire safety requirements. According to officials, Deputy Commissioner South Javed Nabi Khoso submitted a report to Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi detailing enforcement measures taken against businesses found in violation of fire safety laws across the district. The report stated that the sealed shops are primarily located on the ground floor of Bilal Centre and Koh Noor Centre in Saddar. Authorities found that these commercial units failed to meet prescribed fire safety standards and were operating in conditions considered unsafe for customers and employees. The crackdown forms part of a broader campaign to improve compliance with fire prevention regulations in Karachi’s busy commercial districts. Officials have emphasized that ensuring public safety remains a top priority, particularly in crowded shopping centers where inadequate emergency measures can increase the risk of serious incidents. Following the inspection drive, Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi directed all deputy commissioners in the city to strictly enforce fire safety regulations and take action against businesses that fail to comply with legal requirements. The directive aims to improve safety standards in markets, shopping centers, and commercial buildings throughout Karachi. Fire safety regulations typically require commercial establishments to maintain functioning fire extinguishers, emergency exits, alarm systems, and other protective measures designed to reduce the risk of fire-related accidents. Authorities have warned that businesses found violating these requirements may face sealing, fines, or additional legal action until the necessary safety measures are implemented. The latest enforcement drive reflects growing efforts by the city administration to strengthen public safety following concerns over fire hazards in commercial areas. Shop owners whose businesses have been sealed will be required to address the identified deficiencies and meet the prescribed safety standards before they can resume operations. Officials have indicated that inspections will continue across Karachi to ensure compliance with fire safety laws, with similar action expected against other businesses that fail to meet the required standards. The administration has urged commercial property owners and traders to fully implement fire safety measures to avoid penalties and help create a safer environment for workers and the public.

Noreen Niazi meets Imran Khan in Adiala jail, Alee…

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former chairman Imran Khan was visited by his sister Noreen Niazi at Adiala Jail, while another of his sisters, Aleema Khan, said that relief for the former prime minister could only come through the courts. According to reports, Noreen Niazi met Imran Khan at Adiala Jail and later returned to the Factory Check Post. Media representatives and PTI workers attempted to ask her questions but she did not speak to the media and left without commenting. Speaking to the media outside Adiala Jail, Aleema Khan raised concerns about restrictions on meetings and communication with Imran Khan. She said that Imran Khan had still not been allowed to speak with his children, describing the situation as contempt of court. She also said that she and Dr. Uzma Khan had not been allowed to meet him. Aleema Khan maintained that the family was following court orders and questioned why the government was allegedly reluctant to implement them. She said that Dr. Uzma and Dr. Faisal had spoken about their experiences and that the family would present its concerns before the court. She further said that people were expressing relief because the courts appeared to be making efforts to ensure justice. According to Aleema Khan, public confidence in the judiciary could decline if people did not receive justice. “Courts themselves have to provide relief to the PTI founder,” Aleema Khan said emphasizing that the family’s hopes remained attached to the judiciary. She also criticized what she described as the government’s failure to follow court orders, saying that refusing to implement judicial decisions could create the impression that the authorities did not recognize the courts. Aleema Khan said she stood with judges who were working according to the law and urged Pakistanis to stand with their courts as well. The meeting between Noreen Niazi and Imran Khan comes amid continuing legal and political tensions surrounding the PTI founder. Aleema Khan’s remarks have once again highlighted the importance of judicial decisions and their implementation in matters concerning Imran Khan.

Sanya Malhotra says desi ‘acts of service’ hurt women

Sanya Malhotra has spoken about breaking old patterns in her own family. She admitted she “forced” her mother to step back from the kitchen and focus on herself instead. According to her, the habit of women expressing love through nonstop service is not healthy. In many South Asian homes, she said, women spend their days caring for others while their own goals get set aside. She brought this up in a recent interview. Her own house followed the same pattern growing up. Women stayed in the kitchen. Men waited around for things to be handed to them. She said she didn’t fully see how much pressure her mother was under until she moved away to Mumbai. One memory stood out for her. Her mother once cried simply because she felt too sick to cook. Sanya told her that food had nothing to do with love. She explained that cooking is just one way people show care, not the only way it can be shown. That moment shifted things at home. Sanya started nudging her parents away from old habits. Her mother now listens when Sanya tells her to skip the kitchen for a day. She said it makes her proud watching her mother take time for herself in the mornings instead of rushing straight to chores. Her father was not left out either. Sanya said she often pushed him to do small things, like getting his own glass of water or making a simple meal. She admitted the change has not fully stuck yet, but she keeps reminding him. She connected all of this to her character in Mrs. In the film, she plays a newlywed whose entire identity gets swallowed by household duties. Sanya said many women tell her the story feels personal to them. That response, she said, leaves her both upset and hopeful, since even a small shift in mindset feels worth it to her. She also called out how sacrifice tends to get romanticised, especially when it comes to mothers. Women, she said, are often expected to give up their own dreams the moment they become parents. Talking about her mother’s past, Sanya revealed she once wanted to become a fashion designer. It took her years to understand her mother had dreams of her own beyond raising a family. As for the criticism Mrs received, Sanya said none of it bothered her. She said she has no interest in defending her views to people who never even watched the film. She last appeared in Netflix’s Toaster and is currently working on Bandar and Sundar Poonam.

US car leasing declines as higher costs hit buyers

Car leasing in the United States has dropped significantly in recent years as automakers reduce incentives and consumers struggle with rising monthly payments. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, leasing accounted for nearly 30% of new vehicle deals in the US. However, the share fell sharply during the post-pandemic vehicle shortage and has not fully recovered. In the first half of 2026, leasing represented around 23% of new car transactions. Industry experts say one of the biggest reasons behind the decline is the end of attractive lease offers that previously encouraged customers to choose leasing over buying. Automakers have become less willing to provide low-cost lease deals as they focus on maintaining tighter vehicle inventories and reducing discounts. As a result, many customers returning after the end of their lease terms are facing significantly higher monthly payments. Dealers say some customers are surprised to find their next lease costing hundreds of dollars more than their previous agreement, causing many to reconsider leasing altogether. The decline in leasing has added pressure to vehicle affordability in the US market. Some buyers are now choosing longer financing plans, including loans lasting up to seven years, to manage higher vehicle prices. Leasing usually allows customers to drive newer vehicles with lower monthly payments compared with traditional financing. The average lease payment remains lower than loan payments, but industry analysts say the gap has narrowed significantly. Experts believe automakers changed their approach after the 2021–2023 vehicle shortage caused by semiconductor supply disruptions. Limited inventories helped companies reduce incentives and maintain stronger pricing power. The decline in leasing is also affecting the used-car market. Vehicles returned after three-year leases have traditionally provided dealerships with a steady supply of affordable pre-owned cars. With fewer leased vehicles coming back to the market, used-car supplies have tightened and prices have increased. Data from industry analysts shows that average prices for three-year-old used vehicles have risen substantially compared with pre-pandemic levels. Dealers warn that fewer lease customers could also weaken long-term customer loyalty, as leasing often brings buyers back to showrooms every few years for new vehicles
