Young people increasingly turn to AI chatbots for emotional support and social advice

Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly common source of support for teenagers and young adults as many begin relying on AI-powered chatbots to navigate personal conversations, relationships, and everyday social situations. Recent national studies suggest that around 20 percent of young people now seek guidance from AI companions for emotional support and relationship advice instead of turning to friends, family members, or other trusted individuals.

Experts say that the growing popularity of AI chatbots reflects changing communication habits among younger generations. Many users are employing these digital tools to help write difficult text messages, prepare for challenging conversations, and better understand complicated social interactions. For many, artificial intelligence provides a convenient and accessible way to think through personal situations before speaking with others.

Researchers have found that many teenagers appreciate AI because it is available at any time of the day or night. Unlike human conversations, interacting with a chatbot does not involve the immediate fear of criticism, embarrassment, or rejection. This constant availability has made AI an appealing option for individuals who may feel anxious about discussing sensitive topics with people in their lives.

Clinical psychologist Joshua Goodman believes that AI chatbots can offer users a comfortable environment to explore their thoughts and emotions. He explained that conversations with artificial intelligence may feel like a safe place where young people can discuss issues they might hesitate to share with parents, teachers, or friends. This sense of privacy and emotional comfort has contributed to the increasing use of AI for personal guidance.

However, mental health professionals caution that artificial intelligence should not be viewed as a replacement for genuine human relationships. While AI can provide information, suggestions, and conversational support, experts emphasize that it lacks the emotional understanding, empathy, and lived experience that real people bring to meaningful relationships.

Clinical psychologist Mary Alvord has warned that although AI conversations may seem safe, users should remember that perceived privacy is different from actual privacy. She pointed out that interactions with chatbots may be stored, analyzed, or processed by technology providers, meaning users should be careful about sharing highly personal or sensitive information.

Experts also stress that artificial intelligence cannot fully replicate the complexity of human communication. Media psychologist Don Grant explained that chatbots are generally designed to remain supportive and non-confrontational. While this may make conversations feel comfortable, it also means users may not experience the constructive challenges, disagreements, or honest feedback that often help people develop stronger communication skills and emotional resilience.

According to specialists, relying too heavily on AI for social interactions could reduce opportunities to practice real-life communication. Building confidence in conversations, resolving disagreements, and forming lasting friendships require experiences that technology cannot fully provide. Human relationships involve empathy, body language, emotional understanding, and shared experiences that remain difficult for artificial intelligence to reproduce.

To encourage a healthy balance, health professionals recommend using AI as a supportive tool rather than a substitute for personal relationships. They advise parents, educators, and young adults to establish clear boundaries regarding AI use while continuing to prioritize conversations with family members, friends, teachers, and mental health professionals when needed.

Experts also encourage young people to regularly practice face-to-face communication, participate in social activities, and develop interpersonal skills that strengthen emotional well-being. These experiences help build self-confidence, improve problem-solving abilities, and create meaningful personal connections.

As artificial intelligence continues to become part of everyday life, specialists believe it can play a positive role when used responsibly. However, they emphasize that maintaining genuine human relationships remains essential for emotional growth, mental health, and long-term social development. AI may offer convenience and support, but meaningful human connection continues to be irreplaceable.

Escalating clashes in northern Ethiopia spark mass displacement across Sudanese border

Hundreds of displaced Ethiopian citizens from the Tigray region have fled into neighboring Sudan following intense military engagements between regional forces and the Ethiopian national army, raising international concerns over a potential resurgence of full-scale civil war. The recent outbreak of violence centered around Shererina, a strategically sensitive locality near the border with Sudan, marking the most severe military confrontation in the region since the conclusion of the 2020–2022 conflict. Eyewitnesses and regional representatives reported sustained exchanges involving heavy artillery shelling and aerial drone strikes across the weekend. The renewed hostilites follow growing instability surrounding the incomplete execution of the 2022 African Union-mediated peace agreement, alongside the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) regaining control over regional administrative institutions. Regional analysts have also expressed concern that the border area could become entangled in the wider Sudanese conflict through external proxy alignments. Both sides have traded blame for initiating the offensive. Officials representing the Tigray regional administration accused federal forces of launching an unprovoked military assault aimed at suppressing the region. Conversely, federal minister Abraham Belay accused TPLF leadership of instigating the skirmishes, warning of severe repercussions while urging both parties to seek a negotiated diplomatic resolution to prevent further devastation. While formal casualty figures remain unconfirmed, Sudanese medical teams and local authorities verified that civilians alongside wounded combatants continue to seek asylum across the border.

China evacuates tourists from Jiuzhaigou after mudslides and heavy rain

Chinese authorities evacuated tourists from the famous Jiuzhaigou National Park on Monday after heavy rainfall triggered mudslides, forcing the temporary closure of parts of the UNESCO World Heritage site. The emergency came as the country issued its highest level warning for flash floods following widespread destruction caused by Typhoon Noul. Located in Sichuan province, Jiuzhaigou is one of China’s most popular tourist destinations, known for its crystal clear blue, green, and purple lakes, snow covered mountains, dense forests, and spectacular waterfalls. Every year, the scenic park attracts millions of visitors from around the world. State broadcaster CCTV reported that several major attractions inside the park had been closed to protect public safety while emergency teams evacuated stranded visitors. Authorities said the operation was carried out in an orderly manner and that tourists were being moved to safe locations. Local officials announced that sections of the Rize Valley above Arrow Bamboo Lake, including the lake itself, along with the entire Zechawa Valley, would remain closed until conditions improve. They said the restrictions were necessary because of the high risk of additional mudslides and unstable ground caused by continuous rainfall. The closures followed the impact of Typhoon Noul, the strongest storm to strike China this year. The typhoon brought torrential rain across southern and central regions, increasing the danger of flooding and landslides in several provinces. China’s Ministry of Water Resources and the China Meteorological Administration jointly issued a red alert for flash floods covering parts of Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Sichuan, Shaanxi, Gansu, and southeastern Xinjiang. A red warning is the country’s highest emergency level and indicates an extremely high risk of severe flooding. Mountainous areas across China are especially vulnerable during the summer rainy season. Steep slopes, river valleys, and saturated soil often combine to trigger landslides and mudslides after prolonged rainfall. This month’s severe weather has already caused a series of deadly disasters in different parts of the country. In Chongqing, a major landslide triggered by heavy rain killed at least 11 people, while around 50 others remain missing as rescue teams continue search operations. In Gansu province, another landslide in Tanchang county claimed at least 21 lives. Separate flash floods struck a scenic camping area in Weiyuan county, killing 10 tourists and injuring 23 others. In another incident, five people lost their lives after a house was buried beneath collapsing loess soil in Shanxi province. Emergency workers have been responding to multiple disasters as extreme weather continues to affect large parts of the country. China has now entered its annual peak flood control period, which runs from the middle of July to the middle of August. This is traditionally the time when the country experiences its heaviest rainfall and greatest flood risks. Weather experts have warned that rainfall is expected to become even more frequent and intense in the coming weeks. Forecasts suggest that northern China could receive between 20 and 50 percent more rainfall than average, raising concerns about further flooding, landslides, and disruptions to transportation and tourism. Authorities have urged residents and travelers to closely follow weather updates and avoid areas vulnerable to natural disasters as emergency teams remain on high alert.

Brad Pitt reflects on grief a year after mother’s death

Brad Pitt is opening up about the loss of his mother, Jane Pitt, who passed away in August 2025. A year on, the actor is reflecting on how deeply that grief has shaped him. Speaking to Esquire, Pitt described the past year as one marked by a persistent sense of emptiness. He said the loss left him grappling with feelings he’s still working to fully understand. The Oscar-winning actor described grief as one of the most humbling emotions a person can experience. He said even that description felt like it fell short of capturing the weight of it. Pitt went further, calling loss one of the most difficult things anyone can endure. He said the isolation that often follows can feel like an especially painful kind of struggle. Since his mother’s passing, Pitt has made an effort to stay close to his father, William, who lives in Missouri. He revealed that he’s been visiting him regularly ever since. Despite spending time together, Pitt admitted that he and his father rarely discuss the loss they now share. Grief, for them, seems to exist more in shared silence than open conversation. Pitt acknowledged that there’s no straightforward way to move past something like this. He said finding a way to truly overcome it still feels largely out of reach. He explained that the real challenge lies in holding two conflicting truths at once. According to Pitt, grief leaves a lasting void, but it can also uncover something unexpectedly meaningful within that pain. He described the experience as a kind of aching beauty, difficult but not without value. For Pitt, surviving grief doesn’t mean forgetting it, but learning to carry both the loss and what it revealed. His comments offer a rare, personal look into how the actor has been processing one of the most difficult years of his life. A year after losing his mother, Pitt appears to be finding a way to hold onto both the pain and the perspective it’s brought him.

NDMA issues flood alert until July 24

Islamabad: Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide flood and landslide alert until July 24, warning residents of possible flash floods, rising river levels, and dangerous weather conditions caused by ongoing monsoon rains. According to the NDMA spokesperson, heavy rainfall is expected to increase water flow in rivers, seasonal streams, and mountain channels across several parts of the country. Authorities have advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from flood-prone areas, and follow official safety instructions. The alert highlights a significant risk of flash flooding in Gilgit-Baltistan, particularly in the districts of Hunza, Shigar, and Ghanche. Rivers including Shimshal, Hunza, Chapursan, Shigar, Shyok, and Hushe are expected to experience a rapid rise in water levels. In Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), water levels may increase in the Jhelum, Neelum, Poonch, and Mahl rivers, as well as Betar Nullah, Bhimber Nullah, Kanshi River, and several tributaries connected to the Jhelum and Poonch river systems. The NDMA has also warned of possible flash floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, affecting the Chitral, Kabul, Swat, and Panjkora rivers. Local streams in Khyber, Kurram, Orakzai, Kohat, Bannu, Karak, Hangu, Lakki Marwat, North and South Waziristan, Bajaur, Mohmand, Mansehra, Buner, and Swabi are also at risk due to intense monsoon rainfall. In Punjab, flood threats remain high in the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan, the Soan River, and the Potohar region. Similar conditions are expected in northeastern Balochistan. The NDMA further warned of high-level flooding in the Chenab River near Marala and the upper reaches of the Jhelum River near Mangla. Several seasonal streams, including Dora, Dota, Dwara, Bhimber, Halsey, Aik, Plakhoo, Bein, Basantar, Dek, and Sukhi Nullah, may also experience sudden increases in water flow. The authority also noted that any release of water from India’s Thein, Pong, and Bhakra dams could significantly increase water levels in the Ravi and Sutlej rivers, potentially worsening flood conditions downstream. The NDMA has urged citizens to stay informed through official weather updates, avoid crossing flooded roads or streams, and cooperate with local authorities to ensure public safety during the ongoing monsoon season.
