Pakistan, Kuwait agree to expand bilateral cooperation

Pakistan and Kuwait have agreed to strengthen cooperation in several key areas, including trade, investment, energy, labour, agriculture, information technology, health, mining and minerals, and defence.

The understanding came during delegation-level talks held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad on Wednesday. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah co-chaired the meeting.

Sheikh Jarrah arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday for a two-day official visit aimed at reviewing Pakistan-Kuwait relations and discussing regional and international developments of mutual interest.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two sides reviewed the full range of bilateral ties and explored ways to expand economic cooperation and strengthen partnerships across various sectors.

The two foreign ministers also agreed to improve institutional coordination by building stronger links between relevant institutions and maintaining regular high-level exchanges.

Pakistan and Kuwait further reaffirmed their commitment to working closely at multilateral forums on matters of shared interest.

During the talks, Sheikh Jarrah thanked the Pakistani government and people for their warm welcome and hospitality. He also appreciated Pakistan’s support to Kuwait during the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The investigation into the death of 25-year-old businessman Mir Raza Ali has taken a new turn after police added a murder charge to the case and reconstituted the team handling the probe. Ali’s body was discovered in bushes in Karachi’s Gulistan-i-Jauhar on July 29, a day after he was reported missing. His family has maintained from the outset that he was abducted, subjected to torture and killed, while the initial police investigation had considered the possibility of suicide. The latest development came after a second post-mortem examination produced findings that differed from the initial medical report. According to an order issued by the Sindh Inspector General of Police’s office, the investigation team has been reorganised following the findings of the second autopsy. The first information report (FIR), initially registered under Section 365 of the Pakistan Penal Code for kidnapping, now also includes Sections 302 and 201. Section 302 deals with murder, while Section 201 relates to causing evidence of an offence to disappear or providing false information to protect an offender. A five-member team has now been assigned responsibility for the investigation. It is headed by Sindh Deputy Inspector General (Crime and Investigation) Amir Farooqui and includes senior police officers from different investigative units. The new team has been directed to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation and examine the case from every relevant angle. Police have also been instructed to identify, secure and analyse any new evidence, including physical, forensic, technical and circumstantial material. The team has been asked to make every effort to determine what happened to Ali and submit its findings to the relevant court within the required timeframe. Investigators will also provide daily updates on the progress of the case. The development follows demands from Ali’s family for a change in the investigation. Family lawyer Jibran Nasir had called for the original probe to be replaced after the businessman’s body was exhumed for a second post-mortem examination. According to the family’s legal representative, the fresh examination found evidence indicating that Ali had been shot in the back. He argued that the finding contradicted the earlier possibility of suicide and supported the family’s allegation that Ali had been murdered. Nasir has further alleged that Ali was tortured before his death, describing him as a young and ambitious businessman whose death had left his family seeking answers. The lawyer has also criticised the handling of the case by senior police officials, claiming that the family faced harassment and pressure instead of receiving a satisfactory investigation.

    Petrol and diesel prices increased again in Pakist…

    The government has increased the prices of petroleum products once again announcing new rates for petrol and high-speed diesel. The revised prices will remain effective for two days. According to a notification issued by the Petroleum Division the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) revised petroleum prices under the pricing mechanism approved by the federal government. The price of high-speed diesel has increased by Rs1.11 per litre taking its new price to Rs371.80 per litre. Diesel was previously priced at Rs370.69 per litre. Meanwhile, the price of petrol has risen by Rs1.12 per litre. Following the latest increase petrol will now cost Rs343.10 per litre compared with the previous rate of Rs341.98 per litre. The latest increase comes as petroleum prices continue to put pressure on household budgets and transportation costs. Higher petrol and diesel prices can also affect the cost of transporting goods and may contribute to increases in the prices of essential commodities. The government has issued the latest notification for only two days. Petroleum prices could therefore be reviewed again after the current period depending on international oil prices and other factors used in the pricing formula. The repeated changes in fuel prices are being closely watched by consumers transport operators and businesses because of their potential impact on inflation and the overall cost of living. For motorists, the latest increase means another rise in the cost of filling their vehicles. Transport and logistics businesses may also face higher operating expenses if fuel prices remain elevated.

    EU plans sweeping new sanctions on Russia

    The European Union is preparing its most extensive round of sanctions against Russia since the war in Ukraine began, with the proposed measures aimed primarily at Moscow’s military-industrial complex. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas told German newspaper Die Welt that the new sanctions would significantly increase pressure on Russia and could raise the number of sanctioned Russian individuals and entities by about one-third. EU diplomatic sources said the European External Action Service is expected to propose sanctions against around 1,600 people and entities linked to Russia’s defence sector. The proposed measures would include asset freezes as well as travel and transaction restrictions. The EU has already sanctioned nearly 3,000 Russian individuals and companies. According to EU diplomatic sources, the new list could be presented to member states in early September, with formal adoption targeted for October. Unlike broader sanctions packages, the proposed designations are not expected to include new sector-wide restrictions, a move intended to speed up approval. Kallas said the EU would continue increasing economic pressure until Moscow ends its war in Ukraine. However, EU sanctions require unanimous approval from all member states, and previous measures have faced delays because of disagreements among countries. The latest move comes as the EU seeks to strengthen its pressure on Russia while avoiding the lengthy disputes that have complicated previous sanctions packages.

    Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Special Assistant, Huzaifa Rehman, has dismissed speculation about political instability, insisting that the federal government will complete its constitutional term and that comments made by individual ministers do not determine the future of an administration. Speaking during a television interview, Rehman said Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi had already clarified his recent remarks, adding that the issue should now be considered settled. He also noted that Naqvi shares a close personal relationship with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, suggesting there was no reason to read more into the controversy. Commenting on recent political statements, Rehman said he had not expected such remarks from Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. However, he described Bilawal’s comments as emotional and declined to engage in further criticism. Rehman emphasized that the PPP remains a valued coalition partner of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N). At the same time, he asserted that the ruling party has enough parliamentary support to continue governing even without the PPP’s backing. He also responded to political rhetoric about the government’s future, saying that any political “countdown” would not be limited to the PML-N. According to him, the same pressure could also apply to the provincial governments in Sindh and Balochistan. Addressing another claim, Rehman said he did not agree with the suggestion that the government had achieved 30 years’ worth of progress in just three years. He maintained that performance should be judged on measurable results rather than exaggerated comparisons. The prime minister’s aide further revealed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed all federal ministries about a month ago to submit detailed performance reports. He said the initiative reflects the government’s focus on reviewing progress, improving governance, and ensuring accountability across ministries.

      The United Madaris Council has clarified that the recent statement made by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman reflects only the political position of his party and should not be regarded as the stance of the council. In an official statement, the United Madaris Council emphasized that Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s remarks represent his personal and political viewpoint as the leader of his political party. The council stressed that it does not endorse or represent the views expressed in his statement and should not be associated with them. Council spokesperson Mir Asif Akbar Qadri stated that the United Madaris Council does not speak on behalf of any political party and remains an independent platform representing religious seminaries. He reiterated that the council’s primary focus is on educational, religious, and social matters concerning madaris rather than political affairs. The spokesperson further said that the sacrifices made by the martyrs and veterans of the Pakistan Armed Forces are a source of national pride and respect. He described the country’s martyrs and decorated military personnel as national heroes whose courage and dedication have played a vital role in safeguarding Pakistan’s sovereignty and security. Mir Asif Akbar Qadri added that any negative narrative against the sacrifices of the martyrs is unacceptable. He stressed that honoring those who laid down their lives in defense of the country is a collective national responsibility and that their services should always be acknowledged with dignity and respect. The United Madaris Council also rejected any attempts to associate religious seminaries, mosques, scholars, or students with activities that are considered anti-state. According to the spokesperson, madaris and religious institutions have no connection with actions that undermine the interests of the state or threaten national stability. He explained that religious seminaries across Pakistan are dedicated to providing Islamic education, promoting moral values, and serving society through peaceful means. The council believes that these institutions play an important role in educating students, strengthening ethical values, and fostering religious harmony. The spokesperson also expressed concern over the use of the names of madaris, mosques, religious scholars, and students in political campaigns or partisan debates. He stated that involving religious institutions in political controversies is unfair and creates unnecessary misunderstandings about their role in society. According to the council, religious seminaries should not be drawn into political disputes, as doing so can damage their reputation and distract them from their educational and religious responsibilities. The organization urged all political stakeholders to avoid using the names of religious institutions to advance political narratives. The statement reaffirmed that the United Madaris Council remains committed to promoting peace, unity, religious education, and national harmony. It also reiterated its support for the rule of law, constitutional values, and the stability of Pakistan. The council concluded by emphasizing that while individuals and political parties are free to express their own opinions, those views should not be attributed to religious institutions or the United Madaris Council unless officially endorsed. It called for responsible public discourse and urged all segments of society to work together for national unity, mutual respect, and the country’s continued peace and progress.
