Pakistan to tour England for five-match ODI series ahead of 2027 World Cup

Pakistan’s men’s cricket team will tour England in May 2027 for a five-match One-Day International (ODI) series, offering both sides an important opportunity to fine-tune their preparations ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup later that year. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially confirmed the tour schedule, with matches set to be played at five different venues across England.

The series will begin on 15 May 2027 in Southampton, where the opening ODI will be played. The second match is scheduled for 19 May in Manchester before the teams travel to Leeds for the third ODI on 21 May. Chester-le-Street will host the fourth match on 23 May, while the fifth and final ODI will be played in Cardiff on 26 May, concluding Pakistan’s limited-overs tour.

The five-match series is expected to play a significant role in both teams’ preparations for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, which will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia from 4 October to 21 November. With the tournament only a few months away, the ODI series will provide players with valuable match practice and allow team management to evaluate combinations, strategies, and player form before the global event.

Pakistan are currently involved in a two-match Test series against the West Indies. After completing that assignment, the national team will travel to England next month for a three-match Test series scheduled to take place between 19 August and 13 September. The 2027 ODI tour will further strengthen the long-standing cricket rivalry between Pakistan and England and provide another competitive contest between two experienced international sides.

According to the latest ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings, Pakistan are currently placed fifth, while England occupy seventh position. Both teams have consistently remained among the leading sides in one-day cricket, making the upcoming series an important contest as they build momentum ahead of the World Cup.

The last time Pakistan toured England for an ODI series was in 2021, when the two teams played a three-match contest. Although Pakistan did not win the series, then-captain Babar Azam produced an outstanding batting performance. He finished as the leading run-scorer with 177 runs in three innings, including a memorable knock of 158 in the third ODI. His performance was widely praised and remains one of Pakistan’s finest individual displays in England in recent years.

Cricket supporters from both countries are expected to eagerly follow the 2027 series, which promises exciting competition at some of England’s most famous cricket venues. Beyond the results, the series will serve as a crucial testing ground for both squads as they prepare for the challenges of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. The Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA) reported that the Karakoram Highway was blocked at multiple locations between Dassu and the Hunza-Nagar areas, creating difficulties for commuters and relief teams. In Skardu’s Rondu subdivision, severe flooding in the Tormak Nallah area damaged important communication bridges, including the Malan Bridge. Several roads, agricultural lands, crops, and other infrastructure were also affected in Kharmang, Ghanche, and Shigar districts. Flooding also disrupted electricity and water supply systems in areas including Astore, Tangir, and Thore in Diamer district. Communication services were affected, while irrigation channels, drinking water schemes, and protective structures suffered damage. Several villages were cut off, and dozens of families were forced to leave their homes due to floods and landslides. Authorities moved vulnerable residents to safer locations and started relief operations in affected areas. The situation also affected Ghizer district, where temporary road closures, localized flooding, and damage to houses were reported. Rising water levels in the Hunza-Nagar River increased risks for residents in Gilgit’s Jutal area. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast further rainfall in the region and warned about the possibility of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) until July 26. The Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority, district administrations, Rescue 1122, and other departments are working together to provide emergency assistance. Officials said affected families are being provided with tents, food supplies, medicines, and clean drinking water. Heavy machinery has also been deployed to restore damaged roads, bridges, and other infrastructure. Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Amjad Hussain has directed authorities to speed up relief and rehabilitation activities and remain alert around the clock to protect lives and property. The chief minister also emphasized the need for stronger disaster preparedness, saying that climate change has increased the risks of flash floods, landslides, and glacial lake outburst floods in the region. Authorities are coordinating with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to improve emergency response measures and monitor glacier-related risks through scientific and technological systems. The ongoing situation highlights the growing impact of climate-related disasters in Gilgit-Baltistan, where communities continue to face increasing threats from extreme weather events.

    LAHORE: Pakistan Railways is moving ahead with preparations for the first phase of the $2.5 billion Main Line-1 (ML-1) project, with civil works expected to begin in January 2027 under the government’s accelerated implementation plan. The first phase will focus on the 480-kilometre Karachi-Rohri railway corridor, where new tracks will be constructed alongside safety fencing to prevent unauthorised access. The project is expected to take around two-and-a-half to three years to complete. Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi said the department was making every effort to meet the January deadline set by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He noted that consultations with contractors and consultants, international tendering, bidding, shortlisting and contract awards could take four to five months, but the government was determined to keep the project on schedule. Pakistan Railways has scheduled an online market engagement session for September 8 with local and international contractors, consultants and other stakeholders. The discussions will focus on project readiness, procurement, technical requirements, contract packages, qualification criteria, risk allocation and construction while railway operations continue. The Karachi-Rohri section has been prioritised because it carries a major share of the country’s railway traffic and includes stretches affected by deteriorating infrastructure and frequent accidents. Once upgraded, the corridor is expected to allow trains to operate at speeds of up to 160 kilometres per hour. The project will include track reconstruction, selected realignments, bridges, culverts, stations, freight facilities and other infrastructure along the Keamari-Landhi-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Nawabshah and Nawabshah-Rohri sections. Upgrades to signalling, telecommunications and Walton Academy are also part of the broader plan. The Asian Development Bank is expected to finance the project, while Pakistan is also exploring co-financing from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, World Bank, Islamic Development Bank and other partners. A meeting at Pakistan Railways headquarters reviewed preparations for the Karachi-Rohri upgrade, with Railway Board Chairman Syed Mazhar Ali Shah directing officials to complete the project review by October 30, 2026. Weekly monitoring of progress was also ordered. Officials said international expertise and market feedback would be incorporated into the project to improve its efficiency, sustainability and technical viability. Authorities also pledged to maintain transparency, competitiveness and merit throughout the procurement and implementation process. The government sees ML-1 as a key step towards modernising Pakistan’s railway network, improving passenger services, increasing freight efficiency and strengthening connectivity between major population centres and industrial areas.

    Army captain martyred, seven militants killed in Hangu operation A Pakistan Army captain was martyred during an intelligence-based operation in Hangu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while security forces killed seven militants, according to the military’s media wing. The operation was carried out on August 7 after security agencies received information about the presence of militants in the area. Security forces launched the raid after confirming the reported militant presence. Troops engaged the militants at their hideout. Seven militants were killed during the exchange of fire. Captain Hamza Akram, 27, was also martyred during the operation. He belonged to Narowal district. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Captain Hamza was leading his troops from the front. He continued pursuing the militants during the firefight and lost his life while performing his duty. Security forces recovered weapons and ammunition from the militants’ possession. The military said the killed militants were involved in attacks against security personnel and law enforcement agencies. They were also linked to attacks targeting civilians. A clearance operation was launched after the main engagement. Security personnel searched the surrounding area to ensure that no militants remained there. Three militants killed in Mastung operation In a separate operation in Balochistan, security forces killed three militants in Mastung district. The operation was conducted in the Kambela and Asimabad areas as part of Operation Rad-ul-Fitna-3. Security forces carried out an extensive search and clearance operation across an area of around 68 square kilometres. Three militants were killed during the operation. The bodies of two of the militants were recovered. Four other militants were injured, including a key commander identified as Shaukat Mama, according to security sources. Security personnel also detained 12 suspects for questioning during the operation. Militant hideouts were dismantled during the clearance activity. Security forces also removed flags associated with the militant group from the cleared areas. The latest operations come amid continued security challenges in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Both provinces have witnessed a significant number of militant attacks in recent years. Security forces have intensified intelligence-based operations to target militant networks, their hideouts and support structures.

    Dar urges SCO action against Afghan terrorism

    Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has called on member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to strengthen regional cooperation against terrorism, saying lasting peace and economic development cannot be achieved unless militant groups operating from Afghan territory are effectively eliminated. Addressing the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers’ meeting, Dar said Pakistan remains committed to regional peace and wants to see Afghanistan emerge as a peaceful, stable, regionally connected and economically prosperous country. He said a secure Afghanistan would benefit not only Pakistan but all SCO member states and the wider region. The foreign minister described terrorism originating from Afghan territory as one of the most serious security challenges facing Pakistan. He said militant organisations continue to use Afghan soil for recruitment, training and planning attacks, creating persistent threats to regional stability. Dar said Pakistan has suffered heavily from terrorism in recent years. According to him, more than 560 Pakistanis have lost their lives in over 2,000 terrorist incidents since the beginning of this year. He added that investigations into several attacks had also identified the involvement of Afghan nationals. He urged the SCO to play a more active role in addressing the security situation and called on the Afghan authorities to honour their international commitments against terrorism. He stressed that no country’s territory should be allowed to serve as a base for militant activities targeting neighbouring states. Speaking about the SCO, Dar said the organisation has developed into one of the region’s most important platforms for cooperation over the past 25 years. He noted that it now promotes collaboration not only in security but also in trade, economic development, connectivity, culture and regional stability. Looking ahead, Dar said the organisation should place greater emphasis on digital development, technological cooperation, innovation and energy security to meet future regional challenges and promote sustainable economic growth among member states. Turning to the Middle East, Dar reiterated Pakistan’s position that dialogue, diplomacy and mutual respect remain the only effective means of resolving international disputes. He said peaceful negotiations are essential for achieving lasting regional peace and preventing further conflict. He also highlighted Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts in facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran. Dar said Pakistan played an important role in encouraging direct engagement between the two countries, leading to the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding earlier this year. He described the agreement as a significant diplomatic achievement and encouraged the international community to build on the progress made through continued negotiations. On the sidelines of the SCO meeting, Dar held separate meetings with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations, enhancing regional cooperation and expanding collaboration through multilateral organisations. During his meeting with Wang Yi, both leaders reviewed Pakistan-China relations and exchanged views on regional developments. The Chinese foreign minister appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to promote regional peace and extended best wishes for Pakistan’s upcoming chairmanship of the SCO for 2026-27.
