Congo Ebola outbreak death toll crosses 2,000

KINSHASA: The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has intensified dramatically, with the death toll reaching 2,061 as authorities reported 4,449 confirmed cases, highlighting the growing challenge facing health workers and communities. The latest figures, reported by Congolese authorities on Tuesday, show how quickly the outbreak has expanded since it was officially declared on May 15. The outbreak is being driven by the Bundibugyo virus, a species of Ebola for which there is currently no licensed vaccine or specific treatment. Health authorities have been relying heavily on early diagnosis, supportive care, surveillance and infection-control measures. The outbreak began in Ituri province, with cases subsequently reported in other parts of the country. The World Health Organisation has warned that insecurity, population movement and limited healthcare infrastructure are complicating efforts to contain transmission. The current epidemic is Congo’s 17th Ebola outbreak, according to health authorities. Its rapid growth has raised concerns among international health agencies, particularly as affected communities face humanitarian and security challenges. Medical teams are working under difficult conditions, wearing protective equipment while treating patients and tracing contacts. WHO has said that strengthening surveillance, contact tracing, clinical care and community engagement remains central to the response. Recent research has also suggested that the outbreak may involve a previously unrecorded variant of the Bundibugyo strain and could have resulted from a new animal-to-human transmission event, underscoring the importance of monitoring potential spillover from wildlife. With thousands of confirmed infections and deaths already recorded, authorities face an urgent race to slow transmission and prevent the outbreak from spreading further across the region.

Gigi Hadid breaks silence after secret wedding rumours

Gigi Hadid has made a fresh social media appearance after recently grabbing attention with a wedding ring during a public outing with her boyfriend, Bradley Cooper. The supermodel, who was previously in a relationship with singer Zayn Malik, returned to Instagram on Sunday, August 9, sharing a series of photos that gave fans a glimpse into her summer days with her daughter, Khai. The update came just days after Gigi and Bradley fueled speculation that they may have secretly tied the knot. The 31-year-old model appeared to be enjoying a relaxed summer getaway with family and friends. Among the first pictures she shared was a sweet beach moment featuring Gigi alongside her younger sister, Bella Hadid. Both sisters looked effortlessly stylish as they posed together while enjoying the sunny surroundings. Another photo showed Gigi spending time with a close friend on a yacht, while their daughters were seen wearing matching swimsuits. The collection of images also captured several warm mother-daughter moments, highlighting how the model has been making the most of her summer break with Khai. Gigi’s post quickly attracted significant attention from her millions of followers. While many fans praised the beautiful summer snapshots, others could not help but notice how much Khai has grown. Several followers took to the comments section to express their surprise at seeing the little girl looking noticeably older. Fans described Khai as “so big” and shared their amazement at how quickly she appears to be growing up. The Instagram update also gave Gigi an opportunity to shift the focus away from the recent wedding speculation and toward her personal life and time with her daughter. Rumours surrounding Gigi and Bradley intensified earlier this month when the couple were spotted together in Paris. On Monday, August 3, the pair were photographed walking hand in hand through the French capital, with their jewellery immediately catching the attention of fans. Both appeared to be wearing rings on their hands, leading to widespread speculation that they may have secretly exchanged wedding vows. However, neither Gigi nor Bradley has publicly confirmed that they are married. The couple, who have reportedly been romantically linked since 2023, have generally kept their relationship away from the spotlight. Their rare public appearances have therefore continued to attract considerable attention. Gigi’s ring also became a major talking point among fans. The jewellery reportedly features 33 quarter-carat diamonds set alongside 18-karat yellow and white gold in a Grosgrain design. The ring has been reported to cost around $6,450. Despite the growing speculation, Gigi has not addressed the marriage rumours directly. Instead, her latest Instagram post focused on her summer memories, family and daughter. For now, fans will have to wait for Gigi or Bradley to confirm whether the rings were simply jewellery or a sign of a secret wedding.

11 killed, 40 injured in Houthi attack in Yemen

A deadly Houthi attack in Yemen has killed 11 people, including eight military personnel and three civilians, according to Yemeni officials and reports from international news agencies. The attack reportedly took place in the coastal city of Mokha, an area controlled by Yemen’s internationally recognized government. A health ministry official in the city confirmed the deaths and said dozens of people were also injured in the incident. According to officials, the casualties included eight military personnel and three civilians. Initial reports about the number of wounded varied, with one account reporting 32 people injured, including six in critical condition, while military sources said more than 40 personnel had been wounded. The reported casualties occurred following an attack in the port area of Mokha. The incident adds to the continuing violence in Yemen, where the conflict between the internationally recognized government and the Houthi movement has persisted for years. Earlier, reports indicated that the Houthis had also carried out a drone attack targeting a Saudi oil refinery along the Arabian Sea coast. The reported incident comes amid continued tensions involving Houthi forces and regional actors. Yemeni government forces also claimed to have carried out drone strikes against Houthi positions in the southwestern province of Al Dhale’e. According to military statements, the strikes caused significant casualties and material losses among Houthi forces. The government forces claimed that several Houthi military positions were hit during the operation. Barracks, trenches, tunnels and other military sites were reportedly targeted, along with military vehicles and equipment. The latest Houthi attack in Yemen highlights the continuing instability in the country, where military confrontations and drone attacks remain a major security concern. The conflicting figures regarding casualties reflect the rapidly developing nature of the incident, and further updates may emerge as authorities assess the damage and verify the number of casualties. Yemen has experienced years of conflict, creating a severe humanitarian and security crisis. Any renewed escalation between Houthi forces and government-aligned forces risks further worsening the situation for civilians and military personnel alike. Authorities are expected to continue assessing the impact of the latest attack while military forces on both sides remain on heightened alert.

Australia introduces mandatory pay floor and injury coverage for gig workers

In a major shift for gig economy rights, Australia’s industrial umpire has ordered delivery platforms to pay food and grocery couriers a mandatory minimum rate alongside compulsory personal accident insurance. The Fair Work Commission (FWC) ruled late on Tuesday that gig delivery workers must earn a minimum rate for active delivery time. The order, set to take effect on 17 August, is expected to benefit roughly 250,000 workers across the country. Beyond baseline wages, platforms such as Uber Eats and DoorDash will now be legally required to provide personal accident cover for couriers on duty, though workers will remain responsible for third-party vehicle insurance. The reform stems from workplace legislation passed by Australia’s Labor government in 2023 and 2024, which empowered the FWC to regulate conditions for independent contractors previously excluded from traditional employment protections. In a joint statement, the Transport Workers Union (TWU), Uber Eats, and DoorDash welcomed the determination. TWU National Secretary Michael Kaine hailed the order as a landmark moment that establishes new standards for a workforce long left outside national workplace systems.
