ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has described the recently signed Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye as a significant step towards greater regional unity and peace, saying the pact has brought the three countries closer.

The prime minister made the remarks on Friday during a meeting with Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Engineer Abdulrahman bin Abdulmohsen Al-Fadley, who called on him at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad.

The Makkah agreement was signed on Aug 7 by Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Makkah. The agreement provides a framework for stronger collective defence cooperation and states that an armed attack against any one of the three countries will be regarded as an attack against all.

Sharif said the agreement had further strengthened the strategic relationship among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye while conveying a message of unity and peace across the region.

The prime minister also stressed that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia should now build on their strategic partnership by expanding economic and agricultural cooperation.

He said stronger trade and investment ties could help transform the longstanding relationship between the two countries into a broader and more mutually beneficial economic partnership.

Focus on agriculture and food security

Agriculture emerged as a key area of discussion during the meeting, with both sides reviewing ways to increase cooperation in agricultural productivity, technology, research and development, and efficient water management.

Sharif expressed satisfaction with the ongoing cooperation over Pakistani agricultural exports to Saudi Arabia. He said Islamabad was keen to expand the range and volume of agricultural products supplied to the Kingdom.

Pakistan has increasingly sought to strengthen its economic relationship with Saudi Arabia beyond traditional financial and energy cooperation, with agriculture and food security offering significant opportunities for both sides.

The prime minister announced that a delegation of Pakistani agricultural experts would soon travel to Riyadh to continue discussions and explore practical areas of cooperation.

The delegation is expected to focus on improving agricultural productivity through modern technology, research and more efficient use of water resources.

The Saudi minister, meanwhile, reaffirmed Riyadh’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Pakistan in agriculture, water management and food security, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.

A broader strategic partnership

The meeting reflects Islamabad’s effort to translate its close political and strategic ties with Riyadh into greater commercial and economic engagement.

Saudi Arabia has historically remained one of Pakistan’s most important partners, providing financial support and assistance during periods of economic pressure. In recent years, however, both countries have increasingly emphasised investment, trade and private-sector partnerships.

The latest discussions also come shortly after the signing of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, which marked a new phase in security cooperation among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office has described the agreement as defensive in nature, saying it is intended to strengthen collective deterrence and promote regional peace and stability rather than target any particular country.

For Islamabad, the challenge now will be to convert the political momentum generated by the Makkah pact into tangible economic gains.

The planned visit by Pakistani agricultural experts to Riyadh could provide an early test of that approach, particularly as both countries seek greater cooperation in food security, water management, agricultural technology and exports.

The meeting therefore carried significance beyond diplomatic messaging, highlighting Pakistan and Saudi Arabia’s shared interest in developing a relationship that combines strategic cooperation with stronger economic ties.

As regional security concerns continue to shape diplomacy in the Middle East and beyond, Islamabad appears keen to present the Makkah pact not simply as a defence arrangement, but as part of a wider push for stability, cooperation and closer partnerships among the three countries.

    Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan Akamatsu Shuichi has reaffirmed Tokyo’s commitment to further strengthening its longstanding relationship with Pakistan. In a message ahead of Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day, the Japanese envoy conveyed greetings to the Pakistani government and people on behalf of Japan. Speaking in Urdu in a video message, Ambassador Shuichi highlighted the longstanding friendship between the two countries and expressed hope for deeper cooperation in the coming years. He noted that Pakistan and Japan will mark the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2027. The ambassador said both countries would continue working as trusted partners to promote peace, development and stability. He also pledged to further strengthen friendly relations between Tokyo and Islamabad. Shuichi concluded his message by expressing confidence in the continued bond between the two nations and saying, “Japan-Pakistan Dosti Zindabad.” The ambassador’s message comes shortly after Pakistan and Japan signed a grant agreement worth 350 million Japanese yen, equivalent to around $2.2 million, to strengthen the Human Resources Development Scholarship Programme. The initiative, known as the JDS programme, will expand opportunities for Pakistani civil servants to receive postgraduate education and professional training in Japan. Under the agreement, 17 federal government officials will receive scholarships. Sixteen will pursue master’s degrees, while one official will undertake a PhD programme. Economic Affairs Secretary Muhammad Hameer Karim and Ambassador Akamatsu Shuichi signed the Record of Discussions for the programme. Senior Joint Secretary Miran Mohiuddin Soomro and JICA Chief Representative Yusuke Shinazaki signed the grant agreement. The scholarship programme is expected to contribute to human resource development and strengthen institutional links between Pakistan and Japan.

    PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has said that a meeting with the party’s founder is essential for improving the current political situation. Speaking to reporters near Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, Gohar said political tensions could not be reduced through the registration of cases and continued confrontation. He was responding to questions about a case registered against Noreen Bibi. Gohar said statements made by Noreen Niazi should be viewed as her personal opinion. He added that she had already clarified her position. He also stressed the importance of Kashmir for Pakistan, saying the region held a special place in the country’s national interest. The PTI chairman criticised the political approach of the country’s two major parties. He said their political activities had contributed to the current situation. Gohar also defended PTI’s decision to boycott the recent Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections. He said the party had called for a better political environment before participating in the electoral process. He stressed that free and fair elections were necessary for Pakistan to move forward. According to him, political parties should avoid unnecessary point-scoring at a time when the country needs stability. Gohar also made PTI’s position on terrorism clear. He said the party would not support the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan under any circumstances. He described TTP members as terrorists and said action against terrorism was necessary. At the same time, Gohar said peaceful political protests should be handled differently. He emphasised that peaceful demonstrations should not be treated in the same manner as acts of terrorism or violence. He described Pakistan’s response as a matter of national pride and said the country would respond strongly if India attempted similar action in the future. Gohar also commented on Aleema Khan’s political activities. He said PTI’s important members of the National and Provincial Assemblies were supporting her. He again defended the party’s boycott of the AJK elections. Gohar claimed that voter turnout remained very low, estimating it at around 5 to 7 per cent. He said PTI had decided not to support demands that it considered against the state or the Kashmir cause. He maintained that the election boycott was a carefully considered political decision. Gohar said the current situation required politicians to listen to the people instead of focusing solely on political competition. He stressed that public concerns should remain at the centre of political decision-making.
