Pope Leo heads to France with AI, apologies for clergy abuse on agenda

VATICAN CITY – Pope Leo leaves on Friday, September 25, for a weekend visit to France, where he is hoping to repair the Catholic Church’s standing after abuse scandals and is expected to renew calls for global rules on AI development while laying out a vision for Europe’s future.

Leo is likely to draw large crowds on the September 25 to 28 visit, which includes stops in Paris, at the famed Catholic shrine in Lourdes, in the southwest, and in Metz, a city on the German border central to the founding of the European Union.

Some 600,000 people have registered to join an outdoor Mass in central Paris with Leo on Saturday, September 26, with throngs expected to stretch down the famed Avenue des Champs-Élysées.

“Pope Leo’s visit to France has sparked a real tidal wave” of interest, retired French Bishop Marc Stenger told Reuters.

AI at top of papal agenda

Leading Leo’s agenda on Friday are speeches to President Emmanuel Macron and other French leaders at the Élysée Palace and to staff at the headquarters of the UN culture and education body, UNESCO, which is facing budget shortfalls after US President Donald Trump withdrew from the agency in 2025.

The first US pope attracted Trump’s ire earlier this year after criticizing the Iran war.

For Pope Leo, the risk of an AI apocalypse is a major concern

Leo, who has made the risks spurred by AI a major concern of his papacy and has called on world leaders for global rules to oversee the industry, is expected to address the issue at UNESCO.

In a speech at the Vatican on Thursday, the pope said AI could benefit humanity, but has introduced “new dangers to security and international peace.” He urged global leaders to “govern wisely” in overseeing the technology.

Leo’s visit comes as Catholic leaders in France have been at odds with the government over the 2024 enshrining of a right to abortion in the French constitution, a world first, and the passage of a law earlier this year legalizing assisted dying for adults with incurable illnesses.

The Catholic Church teaches that all human life is sacred and opposes abortion, assisted dying and capital punishment.

Leo will also lead a prayer service in Paris on Friday at the restored Notre-Dame cathedral, in the first visit by a pope since a devastating fire nearly destroyed the Gothic masterpiece in 2019.

Pope to meet abuse survivors

Leo is the first pope to make an official visit to France in nearly 20 years. Local Church leaders hope the trip will repair the Church’s standing after a crushing 2021 report found that some 330,000 French children had been abused by Catholic clergy and lay leaders over seven decades.

French bishops have since introduced compensation and safeguarding measures, but survivors have continued to press Church leaders to demonstrate accountability.

“Leo bears the immense responsibility of ‘declaring enough is enough,’” Alain Esquerre, 66, a spokesperson for victims at the Notre-Dame de Bétharram Catholic institution, told Reuters.

The pope will meet seven French victims of abuse by Catholic clergy on Sunday in Lourdes. The Vatican, which usually only issues statements about the pope’s meetings with abuse victims afterwards, has not provided further details.

Leo’s French tour will culminate in Metz on Sunday, September 27, with a speech on “the roots of Europe for peace and unity.”

Macron has invited leaders from all 27 EU member states to attend but it is unclear who will come. – Rappler.com

Could Lionel Messi be Argentina’s next President…

BUENOS AIRES: Football icon Lionel Messi has become the subject of an unexpected political prediction after a Chinese academic claimed the Argentine superstar could become the country’s president within the next five years, a suggestion that has quickly gone viral across social media. The prediction was made by Chinese analyst and academic Jiang Xueqin during an interview on controversial online content creator Sneako’s Kick streaming platform. During the discussion, Jiang argued that Messi’s immense popularity could propel him into Argentina’s highest political office if he ever decided to enter public life. According to Jiang, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner would not only win a presidential election comfortably but could also remain in office for as long as two decades because of the extraordinary public affection he enjoys. “He is so admired that people would continue to support him even if he made mistakes,” Jiang suggested during the interview, a remark that quickly drew mixed reactions from football fans and political observers alike. The prediction comes at a time when Messi continues to cement his legendary status in world football. At the age of 39, he recently captained Argentina to a second consecutive FIFA World Cup final, extending one of the most remarkable international careers in football history. Although Argentina fell to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, Messi’s performances throughout the tournament once again earned widespread praise. Many supporters believe his influence on Argentine football remains unmatched, despite the disappointing result in the championship match. The speculation has fueled lively discussions online, with some fans embracing the idea as an interesting possibility while others dismissed it as little more than a fanciful prediction. Social media platforms have been flooded with humorous posts imagining Messi exchanging football boots for political office. However, there is currently no indication that Messi intends to enter politics. The football legend has never announced plans to run for public office or participate in Argentina’s presidential elections. Political analysts also caution against treating the prediction as anything more than personal opinion. Jiang’s remarks have not been independently verified and do not reflect any official political development involving the Argentine captain. Messi has largely kept his public image focused on football, charity work and family life throughout his career, rarely commenting on domestic politics. While the idea of the World Cup-winning captain one day leading Argentina has captured public imagination, it remains entirely speculative. For now, Messi’s future continues to be linked with football rather than politics, leaving fans to debate whether the viral prediction is pure fantasy or an intriguing “what if” scenario.

Senegal court jails TikTok creators for insulting president

A Senegalese court has sentenced three TikTok influencers to custodial sentences and fines for insulting President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Critics have condemned the ruling as a direct blow to free expression within the country. The creators work for Feenal Digital, an online channel known for producing content supportive of former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. The decision follows a recent political rift between President Faye and Sonko. Mandoumbe Diop, operating under the moniker Lamignou Darou, received a three-month unconditional prison term. He represents the most prominent of the group, boasting over 500,000 followers on TikTok. Magueye Diaw and Moustapha Ndiaye were each handed two-month custodial sentences alongside fines of 500,000 CFA francs. Defence counsel Abdy Nar Ndiaye argued the posts were purely satirical and did not warrant criminal sanction.

UN experts urge Canada to protect Sikh Activist

United Nations human rights experts have called on Canada to strengthen security measures for Sikh activist Moninder Singh, citing repeated warnings from Canadian authorities about credible threats to his life. In a letter sent to the Canadian government on June 3 and released publicly under standard UN procedures, five independent experts expressed concern over allegations of foreign intimidation and reprisals targeting Singh, a Canadian citizen. The experts noted that since 2022, Canadian authorities have issued Singh four separate “duty to warn” notices, informing him of serious and imminent threats to his safety. They urged Ottawa to ensure his protection, safeguard his family, and provide security for others facing similar risks. The letter also called on Canadian authorities to speed up investigations, hold those responsible accountable, provide justice to victims, and take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future. The appeal was signed by UN special rapporteurs responsible for issues related to counterterrorism and human rights, freedom of peaceful assembly, human rights defenders, freedom of religion, and democratic international order. A copy of the communication was also shared with the Indian government. Singh visited Geneva earlier this year to seek international attention over what he described as the targeting of Sikh activists abroad and the broader issue of transnational repression. The case comes amid longstanding tensions between Canada and India following the 2023 killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar near a Sikh temple in British Columbia. Canadian authorities alleged Indian involvement in the assassination, an accusation New Delhi has consistently denied. The dispute strained diplomatic relations, leading both countries to expel diplomats in 2024. Although bilateral ties have improved under Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, concerns over the safety of Sikh activists continue to draw international attention. Singh, who supports the Khalistan movement advocating for an independent Sikh homeland, said the UN experts’ intervention highlights growing concerns over the safety of Sikh voices abroad.

US forces thwart Iranian missile barrage as region…

WASHINGTON: A fragile pause in hostilities between the United States and Iran came to an abrupt end on Tuesday after Iranian forces launched multiple ballistic missiles toward US military positions in the Middle East, according to the US military. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said the missiles were fired by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in what it described as a surprise attack. In a statement posted on X, CENTCOM reported that all incoming missiles were successfully intercepted, preventing any reported damage or casualties. However, it did not disclose the exact locations that were targeted. The latest exchange marks a renewed escalation after several days of relative calm. Both countries had refrained from military action over the weekend following nearly two weeks of intense conflict, during which the United States carried out nightly strikes on Iranian positions while Tehran responded with repeated missile and drone attacks against US allies across the Gulf region. The recent confrontation traces back to mid-July, when Iran targeted several commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, triggering a sharp rise in regional tensions and prompting a sustained military response from Washington. The temporary ceasefire had raised hopes for diplomacy, with US President Donald Trump stating there was a strong possibility of progress in negotiations aimed at ending the conflict. The lull in fighting also contributed to a decline in global oil prices, reflecting growing market optimism that the crisis could be contained. Tuesday’s missile launch, however, signals that tensions remain high, casting fresh uncertainty over diplomatic efforts and raising concerns about the potential for another round of military escalation in the Middle East.

Pakistan hails Hamas disarmament progress, under p…

Pakistan has welcomed recent progress under the Gaza Peace Plan, describing developments toward Hamas’ disarmament as a positive step that could help revive efforts for a lasting political solution and the creation of an independent Palestinian state. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the mediation efforts of the United States, Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye after US President Donald Trump announced that an agreement had been reached for the complete disarmament of Hamas. The announcement is viewed as a significant breakthrough in implementing the Gaza ceasefire framework, as the issue of Hamas’ weapons has remained one of the main obstacles since the truce was reached in October 2025. In a statement shared on social media, the prime minister said Pakistan supports the ongoing work of the Board of Peace and expressed hope that all commitments under the Gaza Peace Plan would now move toward practical implementation. He emphasized that sustained diplomatic efforts should lead to a credible, time-bound political process in line with United Nations resolutions, ultimately ensuring the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination through the establishment of an independent state. According to Hamas officials, a committee operating under the Board of Peace will supervise the storage of the group’s weapons as part of the agreed process. The organization has also urged mediators to ensure that Israel fulfills its obligations under the ceasefire, including the withdrawal of its forces from Gaza. Although the ceasefire has reduced large-scale fighting, violence has not completely stopped. Fresh Israeli strikes reportedly killed at least four Palestinians, including two children, highlighting the fragile security situation despite ongoing diplomatic efforts. Meanwhile, Egyptian media reported that Cairo is expected to host another meeting of the ceasefire mediators, including representatives from the United States, Qatar, and Türkiye, to discuss the next phase of the peace plan. Pakistan has consistently maintained its support for the Palestinian cause and continues to advocate for an independent Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital. Islamabad, which has no diplomatic relations with Israel, has repeatedly urged the international community to work toward a peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and adherence to international law.
