Powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake hits western Colombia, killing at least 111

A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, killing at least 111 people and injuring dozens more in what authorities have confirmed is the country’s strongest earthquake of the 21st century.

The massive tremor struck at a depth of 107 kilometres, with its epicentre located near Chocó. Despite occurring deep beneath the Earth’s crust, the intense seismic shock waves triggered widespread destruction across densely populated urban valleys throughout western Colombia and the primary coffee-growing regions.

In Pereira, a four-story building collapsed into rubble, while video footage from Manizales captured the catastrophic collapse of one of the side towers of the city’s historic neo-Gothic cathedral. Severe building collapses and casualties were also reported in Cali, where local residents formed human chains alongside emergency responders to shovel away fallen concrete and pull survivors from trapped spaces.

Thrusting the administration into its first major crisis just days after his inauguration, President Abelardo De La Espriella declared a national state of emergency. In a live television address, De La Espriella announced that all available state and military resources were being deployed to western Colombia, confirming that the national government’s immediate priority remains the location and rescue of victims trapped beneath collapsed structures.

Severe regional communications outages initially delayed casualty reporting from rural zones near the epicentre in Chocó, where Governor Nubia Carolina Córdoba confirmed at least 12 fatalities and scores of injuries. Meanwhile, Colombia’s civil aviation authority halted flight operations across key regional airports, including facilities in Pereira, Manizales, Quibdó, Armenia, Cartago, and Buenaventura, while structural engineers assess airfield and terminal safety.

The Colombian Geological Service recorded over 20 aftershocks following the initial quake and warned that additional tremors remain likely. Sitting directly along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, western Colombia previously suffered a devastating magnitude 6.2 earthquake in 1999 that claimed more than 1,000 lives across the same region.

Two more Pakistan cricketers join LPL as Shaheen Afridi withdraws

Two more Pakistani cricketers have secured contracts for the upcoming Lanka Premier League (LPL), while Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has withdrawn from the tournament due to personal reasons. Young Pakistani batter Khawaja Nafay has signed with Jaffna Kings ahead of the new LPL season. The promising right-handed batter has been drafted into the squad as a replacement for Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran, who is unavailable for the competition. Naafay’s inclusion provides the Jaffna Kings with an exciting batting option as they prepare for the tournament. The youngster has been regarded as one of Pakistan’s emerging talents and will have the opportunity to showcase his skills in one of South Asia’s premier T20 leagues. Playing alongside experienced international cricketers is expected to provide him with valuable exposure and help accelerate his development. Meanwhile, Pakistan all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed has also earned an LPL contract after being signed by Dambulla Sixers. He joins the franchise as the replacement for Afghanistan fast bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi. Iftikhar brings considerable experience to the Dambulla squad with his ability to contribute in multiple departments. Known for his powerful middle-order batting and useful off-spin bowling, he has represented Pakistan in all three international formats and has featured in numerous T20 leagues around the world. His versatility is expected to strengthen the team’s balance as it aims to challenge for the LPL title. The addition of Khawaja Nafay and Iftikhar Ahmed further increases Pakistan’s representation in the Lanka Premier League, highlighting the growing demand for Pakistani players in franchise cricket. Their participation also provides another platform for both players to perform against international opposition and gain valuable match experience ahead of future assignments. In a separate development, Kandy Royals have confirmed that Pakistan pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi will no longer participate in this year’s Lanka Premier League. According to tournament officials, Afridi informed the organizers that he would be unavailable because of personal reasons. As a result, the left-arm fast bowler has withdrawn from the competition before its start. Shaheen’s absence is a significant setback for Kandy Royals, who were expected to rely heavily on his pace, experience and ability to strike with the new ball. Widely regarded as one of the leading fast bowlers in international cricket, Afridi has consistently delivered match-winning performances for both Pakistan and various franchise teams around the world. The franchise has yet to announce a replacement for the star pacer, and further details regarding his withdrawal have not been disclosed. Fans will now be eager to see how the two players perform as they begin a new chapter in one of the region’s most competitive T20 tournaments.

Avengers: Doomsday shatters pre-sales record with …

Marvel Studios has another blockbuster on its hands even before the film reaches theaters. Avengers: Doomsday has set a massive pre-sales record, generating an impressive $166.5 million in ticket sales on its very first day, according to Variety. The remarkable figure underscores the enormous anticipation surrounding the next chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The record-breaking debut is even more notable because tickets were initially made available only in premium formats, including IMAX, Dolby Cinema, and other large-format screens, across approximately 1,000 theaters in the United States. Despite the limited availability, fans rushed to secure seats, creating one of the biggest first-day pre-sale performances in recent box office history. The overwhelming demand reflects the excitement surrounding Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to be one of Marvel’s biggest releases in years. The film brings together a star-studded ensemble cast, featuring returning Marvel favorites alongside several newly introduced characters. It also marks a major turning point for the franchise as the MCU moves deeper into its Multiverse Saga. One of the biggest talking points surrounding the film is the return of Robert Downey Jr. to the Marvel universe. However, this time he is not reprising his iconic role as Iron Man. Instead, the Academy Award-winning actor is set to portray the legendary Marvel villain Doctor Doom, a casting decision that surprised fans when it was officially announced at San Diego Comic-Con. The unexpected twist has fueled even greater interest in the movie. Marvel Studios has been carefully building anticipation through promotional campaigns, teaser footage, and cast announcements, keeping fans engaged while revealing only limited details about the film’s storyline. Although plot specifics remain under wraps, Avengers: Doomsday is expected to unite multiple heroes as they face one of the greatest threats the MCU has ever introduced. Industry analysts believe the extraordinary first-day ticket sales indicate that the film could become one of the highest-grossing releases of the year. The strong pre-sale performance also suggests that audience enthusiasm for Marvel remains high, especially for major crossover events featuring beloved superheroes. The impressive numbers arrive after a period of mixed box office results for some Marvel projects, making Avengers: Doomsday an important release for the studio. Early demand indicates that fans are eager to return to theaters for another large-scale Avengers adventure. With months still remaining before its theatrical debut, Avengers: Doomsday has already established itself as one of the entertainment industry’s most anticipated films. If the current momentum continues, Marvel could be on track for another record-breaking global box office success, proving that the Avengers brand continues to captivate audiences around the world.

Putin visits Japan-claimed Islands, Tokyo protests

MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin has visited Iturup, one of the disputed Kuril Islands claimed by Japan, in a move likely to further strain relations between Moscow and Tokyo and revive attention on a decades-old territorial dispute. Russian state media reported on Thursday that Putin travelled to Iturup after overseeing major naval exercises in Russia’s Far East. The visit was described by state news agency TASS as Putin’s first in-person trip to the island chain. Iturup, known as Etorofu in Japan, is among four islands that Tokyo calls the Northern Territories and considers its inherent territory. The territorial dispute has prevented Russia and Japan from signing a formal peace treaty to officially end the state of war left over from World War II. During his visit, Putin toured the Yasny fish-processing plant, where officials briefed him on the local fishing industry and the movement of fish in the surrounding waters. Russian television footage showed the president examining large tuna and halibut before sampling local fish roe. Putin also spoke with local residents, praising the island’s weather and comparing it with a resort. His informal interaction with residents highlighted Moscow’s efforts to portray the disputed territory as an active and integrated part of Russia. Japan responded sharply to the visit. Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said Tokyo had lodged a strong protest, insisting that the Northern Territories, including Etorofu, belong to Japan based on history and international law. The visit came at a particularly sensitive moment in East Asia. A day earlier, North Korea, a Russian ally, fired a ballistic missile towards waters off the Korean Peninsula. The launch occurred shortly before major joint military exercises involving the United States and South Korea, which Pyongyang has repeatedly condemned. Putin’s appearance on Iturup also followed Russian naval drills in the Far East, adding a military dimension to an already sensitive diplomatic dispute. The latest development underscores the continuing complexity of Russia-Japan relations. Despite periods of diplomatic engagement and economic cooperation, the unresolved island issue remains a major obstacle to a formal postwar peace agreement. For Tokyo, Putin’s visit represents another challenge to its territorial claims. For Moscow, the high-profile trip reinforces its control over the disputed islands and signals that the territorial question remains firmly within Russia’s strategic agenda.
