UEFA opposes FIFA’s $20bn commercial venture proposal

FIFA is facing growing criticism over its proposal to establish a new commercial subsidiary valued at $20 billion, a move that would oversee the commercial and operational management of the FIFA World Cup and other major international tournaments.

The governing body plans to launch the new entity under the name FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE). According to the proposal, the company would be responsible for handling commercial rights, sponsorship operations, event management, and other business activities linked to FIFA’s flagship competitions.

While FIFA intends to retain full control of the new company, it plans to sell up to 20 percent of its shares to outside investors. The sale is expected to raise approximately $4.2 billion, which FIFA says will be reinvested into the global development of football.

The proposal has sparked strong opposition, particularly from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), which argues that the plan risks turning the governance of football into a commercial asset. UEFA believes the sport’s core values should not be influenced by external investors, warning that football’s integrity and independence must remain protected.

FIFA, however, insists that the new structure is designed to strengthen, rather than undermine, the global game. The organization says the funds generated through the partial sale of the company will support football development projects around the world, including investments in infrastructure, coaching programs, grassroots initiatives, women’s football, youth development, and financial assistance for member associations.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended the proposal, saying the organization remains committed to ensuring equal opportunities for football development across all regions. He emphasized that any net profits generated through the new subsidiary would be reinvested directly into football rather than distributed elsewhere.

Infantino also stressed that FIFA would continue to exercise full authority over football governance, competition regulations, the international match calendar, and the organization of its tournaments. According to FIFA, the creation of the subsidiary would not affect the governing body’s decision-making powers or its responsibility for managing the sport.

Reports have suggested that the group of potential investors could be led by an investment platform associated with Joshua Kushner, although FIFA has not officially confirmed the identities of any future shareholders.

The proposal has also drawn criticism from several political figures and football stakeholders, who argue that the FIFA World Cup is one of the world’s most prestigious sporting events and should not become part of a structure involving private investment. Critics believe that introducing outside shareholders, even without granting them control, could create commercial pressures that may influence the long-term direction of the sport.

Despite the backlash, FIFA has made it clear that the proposal has not yet been finalized. Before any changes are implemented, the plan will be presented to FIFA’s Council and all 211 member associations for review and approval.

The final decision will depend on whether FIFA’s members believe the new commercial structure can generate greater financial support for football while preserving the organization’s independence, governance, and commitment to the global growth of the game.

Russia extends fuel export ban until January 2027

Russia has extended its ban on diesel and petrol exports until January 31, 2027, as the government seeks to stabilise domestic fuel supplies and curb rising prices. In a statement, the Russian government said the export restrictions will remain in force until the end of January next year. The move is aimed at ensuring adequate fuel availability in the domestic market amid continued pressure on the country’s energy sector. The latest decision follows an earlier temporary ban on diesel exports that was imposed from July 8 to July 31. Russia has also previously restricted exports of petrol and jet fuel in an effort to address supply shortages at home. According to reports, the export curbs come after repeated Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian oil refineries, which have disrupted refining operations and reduced fuel production in several regions. The attacks have contributed to fuel shortages and rising domestic prices, prompting authorities to prioritise local demand over exports. The government believes extending the restrictions will help ease pressure on consumers and maintain stability in the country’s fuel market. Russia is one of the world’s leading exporters of refined petroleum products, and any changes to its export policy are closely monitored by global energy markets. Analysts say prolonged export restrictions could influence regional fuel supplies and international energy prices if they remain in place for an extended period. The government has not indicated whether the ban will be lifted before the January deadline, saying it will continue to monitor domestic fuel availability and market conditions.

Hormuz uncertainty pushes global oil prices higher

KARACHI: Global oil prices edged higher on Monday as uncertainty over the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz continued to unsettle energy markets. Brent crude climbed by more than 1% in Asian trading, moving above $84 a barrel, while US crude prices also posted gains of over 1%. The market remains focused on the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route through which a significant share of the world’s oil supplies passes. Any prolonged disruption or uncertainty over shipping through the waterway could put further pressure on global energy prices. Iran has indicated that discussions with Oman on establishing alternative shipping routes are nearing completion. However, Tehran says the United States still needs to fulfil additional conditions before arrangements concerning the waterway can move forward. With the situation still unresolved, traders are closely watching developments around the Strait, with concerns over supply disruptions continuing to influence crude prices.

Trump announces phased Hamas disarmament, gradual Israeli withdrawal

US President Donald Trump has announced that an agreement has been reached for the phased disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza, alongside a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces under a broader peace framework. According to Trump, the deal was brokered through the Gaza Board of Peace after months of negotiations involving international mediators. He described the agreement as a major step toward improving security in Gaza and creating conditions for a future Palestinian civilian administration. Under the proposed plan, Hamas and other armed factions would surrender their weapons in stages while Israeli troops withdraw gradually from areas under their control. The process would be monitored by an international verification mechanism to ensure both sides comply with their commitments. The agreement calls for a complete inventory of weapons to begin within two weeks. Heavy weapons, military facilities, weapons depots and tunnel networks would be addressed during the initial phase of the disarmament process. A Palestinian National Committee would oversee the collection and storage of weapons, becoming the only Palestinian body authorised to control arms in Gaza. The plan also states that no weapons collected under the agreement would be transferred to Israel or any other non-Palestinian party. Implementation of the agreement would be supervised by an international verification commission, supported by an international stabilisation force and a newly established Palestinian police force. Israeli military withdrawals would take place in phases, linked to progress in the disarmament process. A member of the Hamas delegation said the group’s implementation of the agreement would depend on Israel fulfilling its own obligations under the deal. Meanwhile, Egypt is expected to host a high-level meeting involving mediators from the United States, Qatar and Türkiye to discuss the next stage of the ceasefire roadmap and oversee implementation of the agreement. If successfully implemented, the framework is expected to pave the way for humanitarian recovery, reconstruction efforts and the establishment of a Palestinian-led administration in Gaza. However, analysts say the agreement’s success will ultimately depend on both sides fully honouring their commitments during the implementation process.

Preliminary post-mortem report released in deaths …

The preliminary post-mortem report of two women who died while in police custody at Lahore’s Town Ship Police Station has been released. According to the report, there were no visible signs of physical torture on the bodies of the two women, and their deaths appear to have been caused by natural or medical reasons. However, the exact cause of death has not yet been established, and further forensic investigation is underway. The two women, identified as Anmol and Amina, were residents of Pakpattan and had been taken into police custody on suspicion of involvement in an alleged fraud-related incident. Both women died under mysterious circumstances on August 4 while they were being held at the Town Ship Police Station in Lahore. According to the initial post-mortem findings, multiple needle or syringe marks were found on the bodies of both women. The report, however, did not identify any apparent marks of physical violence or torture. Police officials have said that the final cause of death will only become clear after the forensic examination of samples collected from the bodies. Police have claimed that they suspect the two women may have consumed poisonous tablets while in custody. Samples and other relevant material obtained from both bodies have been sent to a forensic laboratory for analysis. The forensic report is expected to determine whether any poisonous substance or medication was present in their bodies and may help investigators establish the circumstances surrounding their deaths. According to police, the women had been arrested on allegations of fraud and deception. A video allegedly showing one of the women removing earrings from an elderly woman has also surfaced. Police said that a female resident of the Town Ship area had contacted the emergency helpline 15 and handed the two women over to the police after the incident. Residents of the neighborhood also provided police with another video. In the footage, the two women can allegedly be seen removing earrings from an elderly woman. The video has become an important part of the investigation as authorities attempt to establish what happened before the women were taken into custody. Another video recorded by a camera installed in the room of the police station’s duty clerk has also emerged. The footage reportedly shows Anmol and Amina sitting on chairs inside the police station. They appear to be conscious and interacting with the duty clerk. The video further shows the two women talking to the clerk shortly before they leave the room. The footage is being examined as part of the investigation into their deaths and may help investigators establish their condition and movements while they were at the police station. The deaths have raised questions about what happened to the women during their time in custody. While police have ruled out visible signs of physical torture in the preliminary post-mortem examination, the presence of multiple syringe marks and the allegation that the women may have consumed poisonous tablets have prompted further investigation. Authorities are now awaiting the forensic examination results, which are expected to provide crucial evidence regarding the exact cause of death. Until the final forensic report is received, officials have not reached a definitive conclusion about how the two women died.
