Priyanka Chopra’s mother reacts to Kriti Sanon’s outfit controversy

Indian actress Kriti Sanon’s Raksha Bandhan advertisement became the centre of an online debate over clothing, cultural traditions and expectations surrounding women’s appearance during festivals.

The discussion gained further attention after Madhu Chopra, mother of Priyanka Chopra Jonas, shared her views on personal choice, dignity and dressing appropriately for different occasions.

Speaking at the Women Building Cinema Together event in Mumbai, Madhu acknowledged that individuals should have the freedom to make their own choices.

However, she stressed that personal freedom should also be balanced with awareness of the occasion and respect for other people’s values.

My body, my choice is right, but woh daayra zaruri hai,” Madhu said while discussing the issue. She explained that although people have the right to decide what they want to wear, there is also a need to consider the setting and maintain a certain level of dignity.

According to her, clothing choices can be personal while still taking into account the cultural or social environment in which a person appears.

Madhu also referred to the way her children dress for professional commitments. She said that her children, including Priyanka, wear different kinds of outfits depending on their work and personal preferences.

However, she added that clothing should also be aesthetically suitable for the occasion.

“My kids also wear such clothes, for work and because they like wearing but I also feel, they need to look good aesthetically as per the occasion,” she said.

Her comments came amid criticism surrounding a Raksha Bandhan campaign by jewellery brand GIVA featuring Kriti Sanon.

The advertisement showed Kriti in an Indo-Western outfit while celebrating the festival by tying a rakhi to her onscreen brother as well as her pet dog.

The campaign quickly attracted criticism on social media, with some viewers questioning whether the actress’s outfit was appropriate for a festival associated with family traditions and cultural values.

The debate soon expanded beyond the advertisement itself, with people discussing whether women should be expected to follow particular dress codes during traditional celebrations.

Following the backlash, GIVA removed the advertisement from its social media platforms. The jewellery brand later clarified that it respected Indian culture, traditions and festivals and said that there had been no intention to hurt anyone’s sentiments through the campaign.

Kriti subsequently addressed the controversy through her Instagram Stories. Rather than focusing on the clothes featured in the advertisement, the actress highlighted the emotional meaning behind Raksha Bandhan.

She argued that the festival should primarily be understood through the relationships, affection and emotions shared between loved ones.

“The essence of festivals is not in the clothes you wear; it is in the emotions and meaning you attach to the traditions,” Kriti wrote.

The actress also spoke about her own relationship with her sister and the role her pets play in her life. She described Raksha Bandhan as a celebration of care, protection, love and prayers for the wellbeing of family members.

Kriti further questioned the tendency to judge women primarily through their clothing during traditional occasions. She suggested that culture and traditions should not be reduced to the clothes a woman chooses to wear, particularly when the deeper meaning of a festival lies in relationships and emotions.

The contrasting perspectives from Kriti and Madhu kept the conversation going online. While Kriti focused on personal choice and the emotional significance of festivals, Madhu emphasised the importance of balancing individual freedom with the nature of the occasion and respect for cultural values.

The controversy ultimately became part of a wider discussion about how women are viewed during traditional celebrations and whether their clothing should determine how respectfully they are perceived.

It also highlighted the continuing debate between personal expression and cultural expectations, particularly when celebrities and brands use traditional festivals in advertising campaigns.

Rather than questioning Rocky’s commitment, she found herself worrying about whether she could still give him the life and happiness he deserved. The actress revealed that she even encouraged Rocky to move on and consider marrying someone else. According to Hina, she made the suggestion several times because she feared that her illness could permanently change different aspects of their lives. “We are not in that space where we fight; we have been in real-life crises,” Hina explained while discussing their relationship. PPP leads in two AJK seats as PML-N wins one

MUZAFFARABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party is leading in two constituencies in the third phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections, while the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz is ahead in one seat. An independent candidate has also secured victory in another constituency, according to unofficial results. Polling was held in four constituencies of Bagh and Haveli districts in the Poonch division. However, voting could not take place at several polling stations because of unrest and security concerns. In LA-15 Bagh-2, PPP candidate Zia Qamar was leading after results from most polling stations were received. PML-N candidate Muhammad Mushtaq Ahmed Minhas was in second place. PML-N candidate Sardar Mir Akbar Khan was leading in LA-16 Eastern Bagh. He was ahead of PPP candidate Sardar Qamar Zaman Khan, making the constituency the strongest prospect for the PML-N in the third phase. In LA-17 Haveli-Kahuta, PPP candidate and AJK Prime Minister Faisal Mumtaz Rathore was ahead of PML-N candidate Chaudhry Mohsin Aziz in the closely contested race. An unexpected result emerged from LA-14 Western Bagh. Independent candidate Sardar Sajid Iqbal Abbasi defeated former AJK prime minister and Muslim Conference leader Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan in his home constituency. The AJK Election Commission has also announced re-polling at 23 polling stations. The exercise will take place on August 15. According to Election Commission officials, voting will be repeated at nine polling stations in LA-16 and 14 stations in LA-15. Polling at these locations could not be conducted during the earlier round because of unrest. Elections in five constituencies of Poonch and two constituencies of Sudhnoti have been postponed. The authorities are expected to announce new dates after reviewing the security situation. Meanwhile, PML-N candidate Mohsin Aziz has demanded a recount in LA-17 Bagh-4. His request was rejected by the Returning Officer, prompting PML-N workers to stage a sit-in outside the RO office. Aziz said the protest would continue until the votes were recounted. The demand has added another layer of uncertainty to the closely contested election process. The PPP has also raised allegations of electoral irregularities. Party leaders have accused authorities of disrupting polling and creating difficulties for voters and polling agents. PPP representatives have called for an impartial review of complaints. They said the Election Commission should examine allegations of irregularities to ensure that the voters’ mandate is protected. PPP Senator Sherry Rehman had earlier raised concerns over delays in polling. She also alleged that party polling agents were stopped from entering some polling stations. The PML-N has rejected the allegations of widespread rigging. Senior PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah said the PPP was using the rigging narrative to cover what he described as an electoral setback. He also called for an end to protests and sit-ins. Sanaullah said legitimate demands would be considered by the government, while warning that violence and armed activity would be dealt with according to law. The PML-N remains in a strong position overall after the first two phases of the AJK elections. It won nine of 13 seats in the Mirpur division during the first phase. In the second phase, the party secured 15 seats from the Muzaffarabad division and refugee seats. The PPP won four seats in the first phase and six in the second. The PML-N has so far secured 24 seats across the first two phases, while the PPP has won 10. The ruling party has said it needs only a few additional seats to reach a two-thirds majority in the AJK Assembly.

Rakhi Sawant slams Kangana Ranaut over student protest remarks

Actor and television personality Rakhi Sawant has strongly criticized fellow actress and politician Kangana Ranaut following her controversial remarks about student protesters. Kangana’s comments, made after the resignation of former Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, have sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many accusing her of insulting young people who participated in the demonstrations. The controversy began when Kangana reacted to the protests by sharing a message on Instagram in which she referred to the student protesters using derogatory language. Her comments quickly drew criticism from internet users, who described the remarks as offensive and disrespectful toward the country’s youth. Among those speaking out against Kangana was Rakhi Sawant, who publicly condemned the actress in a video shared on Instagram. Rakhi did not hold back her criticism, calling Kangana a “chudail,” a Hindi word that translates to “witch,” while accusing her of repeatedly making insulting statements about ordinary people. In her video, Rakhi defended the students and questioned Kangana’s comments about young women participating in the protests. She said that the daughters and students of the country deserve respect rather than criticism and urged public figures to choose their words responsibly. Rakhi also questioned Kangana’s political standing and challenged her popularity among the public. She argued that true leadership comes from earning people’s trust and support instead of making controversial statements that offend citizens. Addressing Kangana directly, Rakhi said, “What did you do to become an MP? If you ever contest elections again, you may not receive people’s support. Why are you speaking like this about the girls of our country? Why are you insulting our students and our daughters?” The outspoken actress further alleged that such remarks damage the image of public representatives and create unnecessary divisions. She insisted that celebrities and politicians should encourage young people instead of discouraging or insulting them. Rakhi also referred to the incident that took place at Chandigarh Airport in 2024, when Kangana was slapped by a security staff member following her controversial comments about farmers. While condemning violence, Rakhi suggested that repeated provocative statements could continue to attract strong public reactions if such behavior does not change. She warned Kangana that making inflammatory remarks against different sections of society could lead to growing public anger, adding that respect for citizens is essential for anyone holding public office. The exchange has generated intense debate across social media platforms, with users expressing divided opinions. While many supported Rakhi’s criticism and defended the student protesters, others argued that public disagreements between celebrities should remain respectful despite political differences. As the controversy continues, neither Kangana Ranaut nor her team has issued a fresh response to Rakhi Sawant’s latest comments. However, the incident has once again placed both actresses at the center of a heated online discussion, highlighting the growing scrutiny surrounding statements made by public figures on political and social issues.

US accuses China’s Moonshot AI of stealing technology from American rival

The United States has accused Chinese artificial intelligence company Moonshot AI of illegally using technology from a leading American AI developer, escalating tensions between the world’s two largest technology powers. The allegations were made by White House Science and Technology adviser Michael Kratsios, who claimed the Chinese company copied the capabilities of a US model to develop its own advanced AI system. Kratsios said Moonshot AI used a technique known as distillation to build its recently unveiled Kimi K3 model. Distillation is a process in which a smaller or less advanced AI model repeatedly interacts with a more powerful model to learn from its responses and improve its own performance. While the technique has legitimate uses within companies that own both models, using it to copy another company’s proprietary system without permission could violate intellectual property rights. According to Kratsios, the US government has information indicating that Moonshot AI extracted capabilities from Anthropic’s AI technology during the development of Kimi K3. He also alleged that the company gained access to restricted Nvidia servers powered by the advanced GB300 Grace Blackwell computing platform, despite US export controls designed to limit China’s access to cutting edge semiconductor technology. Moonshot AI has not publicly responded to the accusations. The Chinese embassy in Washington, Anthropic, Nvidia, and the White House had also not issued detailed comments following the allegations. The claims come just days after Moonshot AI introduced Kimi K3, an advanced open source language model that attracted global attention for its strong performance. Many industry experts said the model significantly narrowed the gap between Chinese and American AI technology. Moonshot described Kimi K3 as being capable of competing with some of the most advanced AI systems developed in the United States. The allegations have intensified concerns within Washington over the protection of American technology. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently said authorities are investigating whether Chinese AI companies have copied the capabilities of American competitors through large scale distillation efforts. He warned that sanctions remain an option if Chinese firms are found to have engaged in intellectual property theft. Bessent said the United States supports open source artificial intelligence because it encourages innovation and wider access to technology. However, he stressed that open source development does not give companies permission to copy protected American research or commercial products. The dispute comes at a sensitive time in US China relations. President Donald Trump is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in September as both countries continue negotiations on trade, technology, and security issues. Artificial intelligence has become one of the most important areas of competition between the two nations. The United States first imposed restrictions on exports of Nvidia’s most advanced AI chips to China in 2022 over concerns that the technology could strengthen China’s military capabilities. Since then, governments have increased efforts to prevent the illegal transfer and smuggling of high performance semiconductor chips into China. Moonshot AI plans to release Kimi K3 as an open source model on July 27, allowing developers around the world to download, modify, and build applications using the software. The planned release has generated significant interest because it would become one of the largest freely available AI models developed by a Chinese company. The latest accusations are not the first involving Anthropic. Earlier this year, the American AI company accused Chinese technology giant Alibaba of using similar distillation methods to copy the capabilities of its Claude AI models. Anthropic urged US lawmakers to strengthen legal protections for American AI technology and introduce tougher penalties for companies found to be stealing intellectual property. The White House has also announced broader measures to protect American innovation from foreign cyber and technology theft. Officials say the government is working more closely with leading AI companies to detect and prevent organised efforts aimed at copying proprietary research. As investigations continue, the allegations against Moonshot AI are expected to become another major issue in the growing technological rivalry between the United States and China.

    SBP reserves climb to $17.26bn

Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves held by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) posted a slight increase during the week ending July 17. However, the country’s overall liquid reserves recorded a small decline as commercial banks’ holdings decreased. According to the latest figures released by the central bank, SBP’s foreign exchange reserves increased by $33 million, taking the total to $17.26 billion. The increase reflects a gradual improvement in the country’s external financial position. Despite the rise in the central bank’s reserves, Pakistan’s total liquid foreign exchange reserves slipped by $5.9 million to $22.67 billion. The decline was caused by a fall in the reserves held by commercial banks. Commercial banks’ net foreign exchange reserves dropped by $38.7 million, bringing their total holdings to $5.41 billion. As a result, Pakistan’s total foreign reserves now provide import cover for nearly 2.5 months, highlighting the need for further improvement in external inflows. The Pakistani rupee remained stable in the interbank market. It closed at Rs277.90 against the US dollar, compared with Rs277.91 a day earlier. The slight gain came as the US dollar also remained mostly steady in global markets despite continued geopolitical tensions. Meanwhile, gold prices in Pakistan declined sharply after international bullion prices fell by more than two percent. The price of 24-karat gold per tola dropped by Rs1,800 to Rs432,036. The price of 10 grams of gold fell by Rs1,543 to Rs370,401. Silver prices also moved lower, with the per tola rate declining by Rs33 to Rs6,370. The decline followed a strong rally in the previous trading session when gold prices had increased significantly in the domestic market. Internationally, gold prices fell after investors shifted their focus to rising oil prices and expectations that the US Federal Reserve may continue raising interest rates to control inflation. Spot gold traded near $4,047 per ounce, while US gold futures also recorded noticeable losses. Global energy markets remained under pressure as Brent crude oil climbed to around $100 per barrel. Rising tensions in the Middle East and concerns over disruptions to oil supplies supported higher crude prices. Analysts believe that increasing oil prices could push inflation higher around the world. This may encourage central banks, particularly the US Federal Reserve, to maintain a tighter monetary policy. Higher interest rates generally reduce the appeal of gold because the precious metal does not provide any interest or fixed return to investors. As borrowing costs increase, investors often shift towards interest-bearing assets.
