Punjab launches early anti-smog crackdown

Punjab has launched a province-wide campaign to curb major sources of air pollution ahead of the winter smog season, targeting brick kilns, industrial units, plastic manufacturers, construction sites and smoke-emitting vehicles.

The Punjab Environment Protection Agency (EPA) is focusing on early action to control emissions before pollution levels rise during the colder months. Regional teams will step up inspections, enforce environmental laws and ensure the use of pollution-control equipment across the province.

The EPA reviewed its anti-smog preparations at a meeting chaired by Director General Syed Musa Raza. Directors from EPA offices and regional field officers assessed district-level readiness, enforcement targets and monitoring systems. The DG directed field teams to accelerate inspections and take strict action against environmental violations.

The agency has also increased monitoring of construction sites, where dust contributes significantly to particulate pollution. Officials inspected fog cannon operations and instructed major construction sites to keep anti-smog equipment running. They also directed teams to activate fog cannons and mist sprinklers in areas where particulate pollution rises and the Air Quality Index (AQI) exceeds permissible limits.

Industrial units must keep their emission-control and filtration systems fully operational throughout the pre-smog period. The EPA warned that factories that bypass pollution-control systems could face sealing, prosecution and financial penalties.

Special enforcement teams will also check heavy transport vehicles at major city entry and exit points. Officials will conduct emissions tests and take legal action against vehicles that exceed prescribed limits.

EPA enforcement figures from January 1 to July 25, 2026, show the scale of the campaign. Teams inspected 45,736 brick kilns across Punjab, demolished 777 illegal structures, sealed 419 units, registered 762 FIRs and imposed fines worth Rs67.76 million.

The agency also inspected 27,384 industrial units during the period. Authorities sealed 694 facilities, demolished 272 structures, registered 175 FIRs and imposed fines totaling Rs123 million over environmental violations.

Airbus completes record 24-hour flight with plane …

A specially modified Airbus A350 plane touched down in France on Tuesday after a record 24-hour test flight from Australia, ahead of its joining Qantas’s fleet next year. Its 23,076-kilometre journey across three continents and two oceans, and through two sunsets and two dawns  was one of the most-watched flights shown on the Flightradar24 tracking site. The flight from Australia to France took precisely 24 hours and 24 minutes. On its outbound flight last week, from Toulouse to Melbourne, the test aircraft flew 17,000 kilometres in 19 hours and 12 minutes. The test flight was a crucial step before Australian airline Qantas receives its first A350-1000ULR in April next year, to be followed by 11 others for services able to link Australia non-stop to destinations in the United States and Europe. The ULR in its designation stands for “ultra long distance,” a feat made possible by an additional 20,000-litre rear centre fuel tank being fitted to Airbus’s A350-1000 model. Qantas plans to start offering non-stop flights between London and Sydney from October 2027. Later, it intends to start flying between Sydney and New York. On board the plane was a cockpit crew of eight people from Airbus’s testing division, accompanied by two Qantas pilots. Two Airbus engineers were also on board. Some of the aspects studied on the flight were the modified architecture around the extra fuel tank, changes to make the cabin quieter, and the plane’s air circulation system. Qantas’s ‘Project Sunrise,’ using ultra-long-haul planes, has been on the cards for the past nine years but has been repeatedly delayed. Currently, the longest commercial flight service in the world is Singapore Airlines’ route between Singapore and New York, which covers 15,350 kilometres and lasts more than 18 hours using another variant of the A350. The successful test flight brings Qantas one step closer to realizing its vision of non-stop connections between Australia and some of the world’s farthest destinations.

Reba McEntire and Rex Linn are engaged, but the country music star and her fiancé are in no hurry to walk down the aisle. McEntire eventually confirmed the engagement publicly in September 2025, and the pair have since shared how much they are enjoying this stage of their relationship. (AARP) Reba and Rex are enjoying their engagement Rather than immediately planning a wedding, McEntire and Linn have chosen to enjoy being engaged. In recent interviews, Linn explained that they still have not selected a wedding date because they are happy with where they are. “We’re just enjoying our engagement right now,” Linn said in an April 2026 interview, making it clear that there is no pressure to rush into the next step. (Yahoo News) McEntire has expressed a similar attitude. She previously explained that she and Linn are putting their careers first, particularly because they both work on the NBC sitcom Happy’s Place. Their busy schedules have made wedding planning difficult. Their careers come first The couple’s professional commitments are a major reason behind the delay. McEntire continues to balance her music career with her role as a coach on The Voice, while Linn works alongside her on Happy’s Place. McEntire has openly acknowledged that finding time for a wedding can be challenging when work schedules keep changing. She previously said that if they plan a wedding for a particular month and work comes up, they will simply postpone the ceremony until another time. (Us Weekly) That approach seems to suit both of them. Instead of treating the wedding as something that has to happen immediately, they are allowing their relationship to develop naturally. A relationship built on friendship McEntire and Linn first met decades ago while working on The Gambler Returns: The Luck of the Draw in 1991. They later reconnected and began dating in 2020. Their relationship has since grown into both a personal and professional partnership. The two now work together on Happy’s Place, where they play characters who share a close connection. McEntire has described Linn as her best friend and spoken warmly about how well they work together. (Us Weekly) For McEntire and Linn, marriage is clearly not something they need to rush. They already have a strong relationship, shared careers and plenty of time to decide when the moment feels right.
