New provinces a national issue, says Aleem Khan

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister and President of the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) Abdul Aleem Khan has said the creation of new provinces is a national issue and should not be sacrificed for political interests or expediency.

In a statement, Aleem Khan said people across the country wanted new provinces to be created on an administrative basis. He said the IPP would continue raising its voice for the issue at every forum.

The federal minister said the prevailing circumstances clearly demanded a new working order across the country. He urged politicians to take ownership of the demand for new provinces while fulfilling their responsibilities.

Aleem Khan said political leaders needed to focus on resolving public problems instead of protecting their personal influence and authority.

He stressed that the creation of new provinces was a national matter and should not become a victim of political considerations.

The IPP president said there was nothing wrong with dividing each of the four existing provinces into four administrative units, if this helped improve governance and addressed public issues.

He also expressed support for the creation of South Punjab and Bahawalpur provinces.

Aleem Khan said the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party also supported the demand for a Hazara province. He noted that voices were also being raised for new provinces in Punjab and Sindh.

He said demands for a Hazara province had been raised in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly since 2010.

Aleem Khan welcomed the fact that major political parties in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were now supporting the creation of a Hazara province.

He said the debate over new provinces should be approached as a matter of better administration, public welfare and effective governance rather than narrow political interests.

110 stranded Pakistani students return from Afghan…

Another group of 110 Pakistani students has safely returned from Afghanistan through the Torkham border crossing following efforts to facilitate the repatriation of citizens affected by tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. According to border security officials, the students were brought back as part of ongoing arrangements to ensure the safe return of Pakistanis who had remained stranded across the border. Earlier, around 70 Pakistani students were also repatriated through the same crossing about a month ago. Authorities said the latest return reflects continued coordination between officials on both sides of the border to ease the movement of stranded individuals. The repatriation process was carried out smoothly under agreed arrangements aimed at addressing humanitarian concerns. In addition to the return of students, authorities also permitted 592 Pakistani cargo trucks to re-enter the country through the Torkham border. The move is expected to provide relief to transporters and traders whose commercial activities had been disrupted due to restrictions at the border. Border officials said the phased return of students and commercial vehicles was made possible through coordinated efforts involving diplomatic representatives, border security authorities from both countries and local facilitators working to improve cross-border movement.

Govt approves 16 pension fund managers for new pension scheme

The federal government has taken a significant step towards implementing its newly introduced contributory pension system by approving 16 eligible Pension Fund Managers (PFMs) under the Defined Contribution Pension Fund Scheme-2024 for newly recruited federal employees. According to an official notification issued by the Ministry of Finance, the approved Pension Fund Managers have successfully completed all required legal and administrative agreements with the federal government. Following the completion of these formalities, they are now authorized to receive, manage, and invest pension contributions under the new pension framework. The move marks an important milestone in the government’s broader pension reform agenda, aimed at ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of the country’s pension system while reducing the growing fiscal burden associated with traditional pension payments. The Defined Contribution Pension Fund Scheme-2024 was introduced under the Federal Government Defined Contribution Pension Fund Scheme Rules, 2024, replacing the long-standing defined benefit pension model for newly appointed federal government employees. Under the previous system, retired employees received pensions funded entirely by the government. The new framework, however, shifts to a contributory model in which both employees and the government make regular monthly contributions toward retirement savings. As per the scheme, every newly recruited federal employee will contribute 10 percent of their pensionable salary each month to an individual pension account. In addition, the federal government will contribute 12 percent of the employee’s pensionable salary, creating a combined retirement fund that will be professionally managed by the approved Pension Fund Managers. The accumulated contributions will be invested in a diversified portfolio of financial instruments and investment opportunities with the objective of generating long-term returns. Upon retirement, employees will receive pension benefits based on the total value of their accumulated savings and the investment returns earned over the course of their service, rather than relying on a fixed government-funded pension. Officials believe the reform will help establish a financially sustainable pension system by encouraging long-term savings and reducing future pension liabilities on the national exchequer. The appointment of the 16 Pension Fund Managers is expected to facilitate the smooth rollout of the scheme and provide newly inducted federal employees with multiple professionally managed investment options for their retirement savings.

Why Kajal Aggarwal chose South Cinema over Bollywo…

Actor Kajal Aggarwal has opened up about why she chose to focus more on South Indian cinema than Bollywood during her two-decade-long career. In a recent interview, the actress said the decision was driven by the quality of roles and the professionalism she experienced in the South Indian film industry. Born into a Punjabi family in Amritsar, the 41-year-old actress has successfully balanced careers in both Hindi and South Indian cinema. However, she revealed that she received stronger scripts and more meaningful characters in Telugu and Tamil films, making it easier for her to prioritize projects in the South. Kajal explained that she never wanted to accept average or uninspiring roles simply to remain active in Bollywood.Instead, she chose films that challenged her as an actor and allowed her to grow professionally. According to her, South Indian filmmakers consistently offered better opportunities that matched her expectations and career goals. Speaking about the differences between the two industries, Kajal highlighted professionalism and punctuality as one of South cinema’s biggest strengths. She said film sets in the South operate according to strict schedules, with cast and crew respecting call times and production timelines. In contrast, she noted that delays are common in Bollywood, where work often does not begin on time. Kajal admitted that she is accustomed to disciplined work environments and prefers productions that value time management. She suggested that Bollywood could benefit from adopting the same level of punctuality practiced in the South Indian film industry. The actress also reflected on her experience working alongside Bollywood superstar Salman Khan in the film Sikandar. Kajal revealed that she was excited to share the screen with the actor because he had been her childhood crush. However, she humorously recalled that Salman was the co-star who made her wait the longest on set. She said that while waiting for filming to begin, she often spent time exercising in the gym available on the set. Kajal added that her habit of arriving on time comes from years of working in South cinema, where schedules are generally followed more strictly. Kajal Aggarwal made her acting debut in the 2004 Hindi film Kyun…! Ho Gaya Na before rising to fame in Telugu and Tamil cinema. Over the years, she has become one of the industry’s most successful and highest-paid actresses. She is next set to appear in The India Story, directed by Chetan DK and co-starring Shreyas Talpade.

IMF hurdle blocks fuel levy cut, Senate told

Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik has said the government is unlikely to reduce the petroleum levy unless it can identify another source of revenue to compensate for the financial shortfall, warning that such a move would be difficult to secure without the approval of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Speaking during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum, the minister explained that any reduction in the levy would affect government revenues and would require a credible alternative before it could be considered. He said the IMF was unlikely to support the proposal unless Pakistan presented a replacement revenue stream. The committee also discussed the country’s fuel pricing mechanism, with several lawmakers expressing concerns over the introduction of daily price adjustments. Members argued that frequent revisions create uncertainty for consumers and make it difficult for the public to understand fuel costs. Responding to the criticism, Malik defended the system, saying the government had removed political influence from fuel pricing by giving the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) the authority to determine prices through an independent and transparent process. He said the mechanism was designed to reflect international market trends more accurately. The OGRA chairman informed the committee that local petrol and diesel prices are linked to fuel product prices in the Singapore market rather than international crude oil prices. He said the daily pricing system allows authorities to respond quickly to changes in global markets and helps reduce the impact of sudden price fluctuations. However, some lawmakers remained unconvinced. They argued that the pricing formula is too complicated for ordinary consumers and warned that frequent changes place additional financial pressure on households already struggling with rising living costs. The committee also raised concerns over the lack of performance audits of oil drilling rigs operating in the country. Members directed the relevant authorities to complete and submit an audit report within seven days to assess operational standards and efficiency. During the meeting, lawmakers questioned the continued delay in appointing a permanent chairman of OGRA. The petroleum minister replied that the recruitment process had been restarted after the earlier selection exercise failed to identify a suitable candidate.

NCA, LCCA grounds finally get the upgrade

Work has officially started on upgrading two of Pakistan’s key cricket facilities. Both the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and the LCCA ground are set to receive major upgrades, bringing them closer to international standards. According to sources, the first step has already begun. The boundary wall that separates the NCA and LCCA grounds is being taken down. This is expected to open up the space for a larger, more connected training hub. Once the wall is cleared, work will begin on a new pavilion at the LCCA ground. The pavilion will come equipped with modern facilities. The ground’s drainage system is also getting an upgrade as part of the same project. The National Cricket Academy itself is set for a bigger transformation. Sources say a modern gym will be added. A swimming pool is also part of the plan. Along with these, new training and rehabilitation facilities will be built specifically for national cricketers. Once finished, both grounds are expected to offer training facilities on par with international standards. Officials believe this upgrade will make a real difference in how players train and prepare going forward. Fitness levels, recovery, and overall match readiness are all expected to improve as a result. This move comes at a time when Pakistan cricket has faced repeated calls for better domestic infrastructure. Many current players have had to look abroad for facilities like rehabilitation centers and proper swimming pools. A setup like this could help change that. Combining the NCA and LCCA grounds into one upgraded space is also expected to simplify things for coaches and support staff. Managing schedules, monitoring fitness, and coordinating training sessions should become easier with everything centralized in one location. So far, no official timeline has been announced for when the project will be completed. Still, the early progress, especially the wall coming down, suggests that the plan is already moving forward without unnecessary delays. If everything goes as planned, this could turn out to be one of the more meaningful infrastructure upgrades for Pakistan cricket in recent memory. Giving players access to modern training resources at home, instead of depending on facilities overseas, could go a long way in supporting long-term player development. For now, all eyes remain on how quickly the project moves from demolition to full completion.
