India’s Independence Day faces protests and boycotts

NEW DELHI: India’s Independence Day celebrations were met with protests, shutdowns and boycott calls in several regions on Saturday, including Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and parts of the country’s northeast.

Several political, community and regional groups called for strikes and non-participation in official celebrations, with some organisations observing the day as a “Black Day”.

In IIOJK, boycott and shutdown calls were reported ahead of the celebrations. Security was significantly increased in Srinagar, with additional personnel deployed around key locations and routes leading to the main Independence Day venue.

The protests and boycott calls were also reported in several northeastern states, including Assam, Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh.

In Nagaland, Naga nationalist groups observed August 14 as their own Independence Day, recalling the Naga National Council’s declaration of independence in 1947. The groups continue to emphasise their separate political identity and longstanding demand for self-determination.

Naga leader Thuingaleng Muivah reiterated that his group would not compromise on its demands concerning sovereignty, a separate flag and constitution.

The Naga Students’ Federation also opposed the mandatory singing of Vande Mataram, citing concerns related to religious freedom and freedom of conscience.

In Manipur, several organisations called a 12-hour general strike and shutdown. Black flags were reportedly displayed in parts of the state as groups urged people to stay away from official celebrations.

Similar boycott calls were issued in Assam and neighbouring areas. Security forces were placed on alert around sensitive locations and border regions amid concerns over possible disruptions.

The developments came as India held nationwide celebrations marking its Independence Day, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the main ceremony in New Delhi.

Meanwhile, India’s opposition also remained divided over the official celebrations. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi did not attend Modi’s ceremony.

Their absence was linked to continuing political differences, including disagreements over seating arrangements and protocol.

In May, a man believed to have mental health problems drove into a pedestrian zone in Leipzig, killing two and injuring three. In 2016, a Tunisian failed asylum seeker hijacked a truck and drove it into a busy Christmas market, killing 11 people. At the Tiergarten park, people lit candles and left flowers in memory of the victim. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the full circumstances of the attack.     KARACHI: At least 94 people were injured in separate incidents of aerial firing in Karachi during Independence Day celebrations. According to police, 30 suspects involved in aerial firing have been arrested and weapons have been recovered from their possession. Police conducted operations in several areas of the city, including SITE Super Highway, Sachal, Gulistan-e-Johar and Gulshan-e-Iqbal. Ten suspects were arrested during these operations. Police in District West also arrested four suspects allegedly involved in aerial firing. In District Central, 16 people were arrested for allegedly firing shots into the air. The injured included 56 men, 15 women, 15 boys and eight girls. The injured were shifted to major hospitals across the city for medical treatment. A total of 27 injured people were brought to Civil Hospital, 36 to Jinnah Hospital and 32 to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Police said further action was being taken against those involved in aerial firing. Authorities have also increased security measures to prevent further incidents during Independence Day celebrations.

    JERUSALEM: Fresh violence erupted along the Israel-Lebanon border on Wednesday after two Israeli soldiers were killed during a military operation in southern Lebanon, prompting retaliatory Israeli airstrikes even as diplomatic talks aimed at reducing tensions continued in Rome. The latest escalation comes despite a US-brokered security arrangement reached in June, which was intended to ease hostilities between Israel and Lebanon following months of cross-border clashes. According to Israeli authorities, the two soldiers were killed and four others wounded when an explosion ripped through a building they had entered during a security sweep inside southern Lebanon. Israeli Army Radio, citing a security source, reported that investigators were still trying to determine whether the explosive device had been planted before or after the ceasefire agreement. Soon after the incident, the Israeli military described the explosion as a “blatant ceasefire violation” and launched a series of retaliatory strikes targeting areas in southern Lebanon. Lebanese officials said one civilian was killed and at least 12 others were injured after Israeli strikes hit the town of Tibnin, around 25 kilometres from Mansouri. Before the attack, the Israeli military issued an evacuation warning for residents in the area—the first such online warning directed at Lebanon in more than a month. However, Israel’s tone appeared to soften a day later. In a statement mourning the soldiers, Defence Minister Israel Katz did not directly accuse Hezbollah or refer to a ceasefire violation, signalling that Israeli authorities may be seeking to avoid a wider military escalation. Israel continues to maintain a buffer zone inside southern Lebanon, saying its forces are operating there to eliminate threats posed by the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement and to enhance border security. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts remain underway in Rome, where Israeli and Lebanese officials are participating in talks that began on Tuesday and are scheduled to continue through Thursday. The negotiations are focused on strengthening the June security arrangement and preventing further violence along the volatile frontier. The renewed bloodshed underscores the fragile nature of the ceasefire and highlights the challenges facing mediators seeking lasting stability in the region. While both sides have expressed interest in preventing a broader conflict, sporadic violence continues to threaten the progress made through recent diplomatic initiatives.     KARACHI: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has firmly rejected any proposal to divide Sindh into administrative units, with Sindh government spokesperson Saadia Javed declaring that the province remains a “red line” for the party. Speaking to the media on Monday, Javed said the PPP has never supported the division of Sindh and has no intention of doing so in the future. She argued that Pakistan’s current economic challenges and rising inflation make the creation of additional administrative units impractical, questioning how the government would finance such a move. Criticising the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), she described the demand for new administrative units as a political stunt. Javed questioned the performance of senior MQM leaders, including Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal and Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, asking what concrete steps they had taken to address the concerns of their voters or improve education and public services. She reiterated that Karachi is the capital of Sindh and stressed that any attempt to divide the province is unacceptable to the PPP. According to Javed, while some people in Punjab may favour the creation of additional administrative units, the people of Sindh do not share that view. Addressing Karachi’s civic challenges, she acknowledged that infrastructure development is underway but admitted that progress has not been as fast as residents expect. Referring to ongoing construction on University Road, she recognised the inconvenience faced by commuters and residents. She also shared her own experience, saying that despite living in Defence for four decades, her home still does not receive a regular water supply. Javed said the provincial government is working to resolve Karachi’s longstanding issues and insisted that all of the city’s problems should not be blamed solely on the current administration. She expressed confidence that visible improvements in Karachi would emerge by the end of the year. On the Red Line Bus Rapid Transit project, the spokesperson said work is progressing at a rapid pace, adding that the deadline for completing the mixed-lane track has been set for July 31.

    PTA fines CM Pak Rs77.8 Million for SIM sales Geo-fencing violation

    ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has imposed a fine of Rs77.8 million on China Mobile Pakistan (CM Pak) after determining that the operator failed to ensure compliance with mandatory geo-fencing rules governing biometric verification system (BVS) devices used for SIM sales. The regulatory action followed a field inspection in which the PTA found that an authorised sales representative linked to CM Pak’s Taxila franchise was selling SIMs from a location in Islamabad that fell outside the approved geographical area of the franchise. According to the PTA’s enforcement order, the inspection was carried out on March 30, 2026. During the inspection, the regulator discovered that a Data Sales Officer (DSO) associated with the Taxila franchise was conducting SIM sales at I-10 Markaz, Islamabad. The location was not within the authorised territorial jurisdiction or designated geo-location of the franchise. The PTA also found that the sales activity had been conducted without the required Door-to-Door/Kiosk approval from the regulator. Geo-fencing requirement The PTA’s regulatory framework requires BVS devices used for SIM issuance to remain within a prescribed distance of the approved sales location. Under the mandatory geo-fencing mechanism, such devices must operate within 100 metres of the designated geo-location of an authorised sales channel. The purpose of the requirement is to ensure that biometric devices are not moved to unauthorised locations for SIM issuance. The mechanism is also designed to strengthen oversight of SIM sales, prevent misuse of biometric verification equipment and improve the traceability of subscriber registrations. The regulator made it clear that SIM sales outside an approved geo-location are not permitted unless prior approval has been obtained from the PTA. CM Pak challenges regulatory action CM Pak contested the proposed enforcement proceedings, maintaining that the incident was an isolated operational lapse involving an individual DSO rather than evidence of a broader failure in the company’s compliance system. The operator argued that the SIMs concerned had been issued only after the required biometric verification process had been successfully completed. It further stated that the transactions were properly recorded and remained traceable through the prescribed systems. CM Pak also maintained that there had been no issuance of fake or anonymous SIMs, no bypass of biometric verification and no failure in the verification process conducted through the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). The company told the regulator that it had taken disciplinary and corrective measures after being informed of the violation. These measures included issuing a show-cause notice and warning letter to the concerned franchise and terminating the services of the DSO involved in the incident. CM Pak also said it had circulated compliance instructions across its network and strengthened internal monitoring mechanisms to prevent similar incidents in the future. PTA rejects defence The PTA, however, did not accept the company’s argument that successful biometric verification should be treated as sufficient compliance. The authority ruled that biometric verification and geo-fencing constitute separate regulatory requirements. While biometric verification is intended to establish the identity of a subscriber, geo-fencing controls where the SIM sale and verification process can legally take place. According to the regulator, compliance with one requirement does not eliminate the obligation to comply with the other. The PTA observed that allowing BVS devices to operate beyond their authorised locations could weaken the regulatory controls established for SIM issuance, regardless of whether the subscriber’s biometric verification was successfully completed. The regulator also rejected CM Pak’s position that responsibility for the incident could primarily be attributed to the franchise or individual sales officer. Under the applicable Subscribers Antecedents Verification Regulations and licence conditions, the PTA maintained that the licensed operator carries direct responsibility for ensuring that its authorised sales network complies with regulatory requirements. Corrective action not enough to erase violation The authority further noted that steps taken by an operator after a violation has been detected can potentially serve as mitigating factors but cannot remove the violation itself. The PTA stressed that geo-fencing is a substantive regulatory safeguard rather than a procedural requirement that can be overlooked if other verification mechanisms are functioning properly. It said allowing subsequent corrective measures to effectively neutralise an established breach could undermine the purpose of mandatory compliance requirements and weaken regulatory oversight of SIM issuance. After reviewing the show-cause notice, CM Pak’s written responses, compliance report and submissions made during the hearing, the PTA concluded that the operator had failed to maintain adequate supervision and regulatory control over its authorised sales channel. Rs77.8m penalty imposed Based on its findings, the PTA held CM Pak liable under Section 23 of the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organization) Act, 1996. The authority subsequently imposed a penalty of Rs77.8 million (Rs77,800,000) on the company and directed it to deposit the amount within 10 days of receiving the enforcement order. The PTA warned that failure to pay the penalty within the specified period could result in further proceedings or action under the applicable law.
