Qatar and Pakistan advance mediation efforts as US and Iran pause direct military strikes

Regional mediators led by Qatar and Pakistan have achieved significant progress in restoring negotiations between the United States and Iran following a three-day pause in direct military strikes, according to regional officials.

The temporary lull comes after nearly two weeks of heavy bombardment triggered by Iranian actions in the Strait of Hormuz.

While US President Donald Trump and Tehran have temporarily halted direct strikes against one another, scattered attacks by regional armed groups persist, including drone attacks targetting Saudi petroleum facilities by Iran-backed militias and Houthis, alongside drone interceptions over Jordan and Iraq.

Talks facilitated alongside Oman are focusing on establishing a maritime management mechanism for the Strait of Hormuz to restore an interim ceasefire deal, although Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei stated that no direct negotiations with Washington are taking place and that the waterway currently remains closed.

Concurrently, US naval blockades against Iran persist, and global shipping through both the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb strait remains constrained.

Amid ongoing mediation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump in Washington to discuss the wider conflict, while Iranian officials have condemned a recent Ukrainian strike on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea.

Ashley Callingbull calls out cultural appropriation at pageant

Ashley Callingbull has opened up about her decision to speak out during the Miss Universe Canada 2026 pageant, saying she felt a responsibility to use her platform to raise awareness about cultural appropriation and encourage greater accountability. The 36-year-old pageant contestant became involved in a controversy after contestants Karisa Haverkamp and Jasleen Kaily were photographed wearing outfits that featured prominent elements inspired by traditional Indigenous clothing. The images sparked criticism, with concerns being raised about the use of Indigenous cultural symbols in a pageant setting. Callingbull, who is known for representing and advocating for Indigenous communities, said the situation was deeply upsetting. She explained that seeing the outfits felt disrespectful and described the incident as “a slap in the face to the Indigenous community.” Rather than remaining silent, Callingbull decided to address the issue publicly during the live pageant. She found an unexpected opportunity when she and fellow host Sonny Borelli were preparing to announce the top 20 contestants. At that moment, the teleprompter stopped working, leaving the presenters without their prepared script. Instead of simply waiting for the technical problem to be resolved, Callingbull used the unscripted moment to speak directly to the audience. She delivered a brief but powerful message, saying, “It’s 2026, we should know better.” Her comments immediately drew attention because they came during a highly visible moment of the competition. Callingbull made it clear that she wanted to use the platform to encourage people to think more carefully about cultural representation and respect. Following the controversy, Miss Universe Canada responded to the criticism and stated that causing offense, hurt or misunderstanding was never the organization’s intention. The response came amid wider discussion about cultural sensitivity and the responsibility of public events to ensure that Indigenous traditions and symbols are treated respectfully. Callingbull has since received significant support from people who appreciated her decision to speak up. She said the response has reinforced her belief that public figures can play an important role in encouraging meaningful conversations. For Callingbull, the incident was about more than a pageant or a particular outfit. She believes it was an opportunity to highlight the importance of respecting Indigenous culture and challenging behavior that may be considered inappropriate or insensitive. She hopes the situation will encourage others to find the courage to speak out when they witness something they believe is wrong. By using an unexpected moment on stage to address the controversy, Callingbull showed that even an unscripted statement can draw attention to important social issues and encourage broader conversations about respect, representation and cultural awareness.

Elon Musk takes brutal dig at actress Anne Hathawa…

Elon Musk has sparked fresh controversy after taking aim at actress Anne Hathaway over a speech she delivered nearly eight years ago in support of LGBTQ+ rights. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO criticized Hathaway on X after clips from her 2018 Human Rights Campaign National Dinner speech resurfaced online and gained renewed attention.  The debate began when marketing professor Gad Saad shared criticism of Hathaway’s remarks from the event. Responding to the post, Musk dismissed the actress in blunt terms, writing, “She’s just a marionette. Whoever wrote her speech is the real douchebag.” In separate posts, he also suggested Hathaway was simply reading a script and accused her of lacking independent thought.  Hathaway’s original speech was delivered in September 2018 after she received the National Ally for Equality Award from the Human Rights Campaign. During her address, the Oscar winner spoke about equality and urged people to reject discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and race. She also encouraged audiences to embrace empathy and treat others with dignity and respect.  Although the speech was widely praised at the time, a short clip recently resurfaced on social media, introducing it to a new audience. The video quickly went viral, triggering intense debate online and drawing reactions from supporters and critics alike. Musk’s comments added fuel to the discussion, with many users defending Hathaway while others echoed his criticism.  As of now, Hathaway has not publicly responded to Musk’s remarks. Her representatives have also remained silent on the renewed backlash surrounding the years-old speech.  The exchange highlights how old public statements can resurface and generate fresh controversy years later, particularly when amplified through social media. It also reflects the increasingly polarized conversations surrounding cultural and political issues online, where comments from high-profile figures often become major talking points. For now, the disagreement remains confined to social media, with Musk standing by his criticism and Hathaway choosing not to engage publicly. Whether the actress will respond remains to be seen, but the episode has once again demonstrated how celebrity opinions and online platforms can reignite debates long after the original moment has passed.

Tom Holland reveals Zendaya secretly powers his skincare routine

Tom Holland has shared that his wife, Zendaya, is the person behind his skincare routine, revealing that he regularly uses her beauty products without paying much attention to what they actually are. In a recent interview, the actor admitted he has little knowledge about the skincare items he applies every day because he never buys them himself. Instead, he said Zendaya takes care of stocking their bathroom with creams, moisturizers, and other essentials. Holland joked that one of the biggest advantages of living with Zendaya is having easy access to her high-end skincare collection. He confessed that he often helps himself to her products, even though he suspects they are much more expensive than he realizes. The actor also laughed about his habit of using more moisturizer than necessary, saying he probably applies far too much each time. Despite that, he appears happy to leave all skincare-related decisions to Zendaya, trusting her choices rather than shopping for products on his own. While Holland is known worldwide for portraying Spider-Man on the big screen, he said his daily skincare routine is surprisingly simple whenever he is not filming. Away from movie sets, he prefers to keep things low-maintenance instead of following an elaborate beauty regimen. According to the actor, his morning routine usually begins with nothing more than splashing water on his face. He added that he makes sure to moisturize and apply sunscreen with SPF protection, but beyond those basics, he does very little to care for his skin. His comments offer fans a glimpse into the couple’s everyday life, showing that even Hollywood stars often rely on one another for simple routines at home. The pair also support each other when it comes to fashion. Before attending major premieres, award shows, or promotional events, they often share opinions about each other’s outfits. Zendaya recently revealed that Holland usually gets an early look at the outfits she plans to wear on the red carpet. Styled by longtime fashion collaborator Law Roach, her looks often become some of the most talked-about moments at public events. She explained that Holland is generally very supportive of her fashion choices and rarely suggests any changes. According to Zendaya, he almost always likes what he sees and has very few notes before she steps onto the red carpet. The couple, who have become one of Hollywood’s most admired pairs, continue to balance their successful careers while supporting each other behind the scenes. Whether it is skincare, fashion, or preparing for major public appearances, Holland and Zendaya appear to share a relaxed and encouraging partnership that fans continue to appreciate. Their latest comments provide another lighthearted look at their relationship, highlighting how small everyday moments—like sharing moisturizer or previewing an outfit—help strengthen their bond beyond the spotlight.

Shift in Democratic backing signals growing rift over US support for Israel

A long-standing bipartisan consensus in Washington regarding unyielding support for Israel is facing unprecedented strain, primarily driven by deepening fractures within the Democratic Party. Escalating military action in Gaza, broader regional conflict, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s close alignment with US Republicans have steadily eroded traditional Democratic backing, threatening to transform America’s foreign policy landscape into a sharp partisan divide. This internal tension is increasingly evident across Capitol Hill and key electoral contests. Congressional votes attempting to restrict or eliminate annual military assistance, which amounts to billions of dollars alongside recent emergency packages, have gained significant momentum, drawing support from senior figures like former Speaker Nancy Pelosi despite pushback from House leadership. High-profile primary races in battlegrounds such as Michigan, Florida, and Colorado highlight this rift, pitting progressive candidates advocating a complete halt to military funding against establishment figures emphasising the strategic necessity of security ties. Recent public opinion polls reinforce this realignment, with a solid majority of Democratic voters maintaining that Washington is overly supportive of Israel, reflecting a generational shift that could permanently alter future US diplomatic relations.

Russia condemns EU’s 21st sanctions, warns of consequences

Russia has sharply criticized the European Union after the bloc approved its 21st package of sanctions, saying the new measures will damage European economies more than Russia and further increase tensions between Moscow and Brussels. In a statement released by Russia’s Permanent Mission to the European Union, officials said the approval process for the latest sanctions exposed growing divisions within the EU. According to Moscow, many member states were reluctant to support additional restrictions because of the economic burden they are already facing. Russia claimed the lengthy negotiations reflected increasing concern among European governments over the impact of sanctions on businesses, energy supplies and overall economic growth. The Russian mission accused the European Union of continuing a policy of confrontation despite rising economic challenges across Europe. It said EU leaders were ignoring the financial costs of sanctions while pursuing what Moscow described as a political campaign against Russia. The statement also referred to comments by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, who indicated that further sanctions could be introduced in the future. According to Russia, discussions on new sanctions have become a political ritual aimed at showing unity among EU member states rather than achieving practical results. Moscow argued that the restrictions have failed to weaken Russia in the way European leaders had expected. Instead, it claimed that European citizens and businesses are paying the price through higher energy costs, inflation and slower economic growth. The statement further argued that Europe’s economic difficulties have been intensified by the EU’s decision to reduce imports of Russian energy, continued financial and military support for Ukraine, and instability in global energy markets caused by ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Russian officials also pointed to a recent assessment by the European Central Bank, which highlighted geopolitical conflicts and energy market uncertainty as major risks to the European economy. Moscow said this assessment supports its argument that continued sanctions are creating additional pressure on European countries. Using a road journey as a comparison, the Russian mission said the European Union was following a path that could lead its economy into serious difficulties. It argued that EU policymakers should reconsider their current strategy instead of introducing more restrictions that, in Russia’s view, have produced limited results while increasing costs for Europe. The statement concluded by reaffirming that Russia considers the EU sanctions to be illegal unilateral measures. Moscow warned that any additional restrictions imposed by the European Union would receive what it described as an effective and appropriate response from Russia.

US President Donald Trump backtracks on promise allowing Ukraine to produce Patriot missiles

US President Donald Trump has walked back his previous offer to grant Ukraine a license to domestically produce Patriot interceptor missiles, stating during a Cabinet meeting at Camp David that the United States has “not agreed” to share the technology. Trump expressed caution over transferring sensitive defense hardware, warning that “they can someday turn on you” and emphasising the need to safeguard advanced military systems. The reversal comes just three weeks after Trump publicly promised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at a NATO summit in Ankara that Washington would grant Kyiv the manufacturing rights to build the air defense interceptors. Although Zelensky recently stated after a White House visit that the production licensing had been approved, Trump clarified that no final commitment has been made. The decision arrives as Kyiv faces intensified Russian drone and ballistic missile strikes, with Ukrainian military officials warning that critical shortages of Patriot interceptors are severely compromising their air defense capabilities.
