KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has said the province played a leading role in the creation of Pakistan and will continue to contribute to the country’s progress.

Speaking to the media after visiting Mazar-e-Quaid in Karachi on Independence Day, Murad Ali Shah said he had paid his respects at the mausoleum along with the governor and members of the provincial cabinet. He said prayers were offered for Pakistan’s peace, stability and prosperity.

The chief minister recalled Sindh’s contribution to the Pakistan Movement, saying the province had played an important role in the struggle for a separate homeland. He urged the nation to remain united and follow the principles and vision of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

Murad Ali Shah also paid tribute to former prime ministers Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto. He described Zulfikar Ali Bhutto as the founder of Pakistan’s nuclear programme, saying he faced death but refused to compromise.

He said Benazir Bhutto also sacrificed her life but never allowed Pakistan’s sovereignty and integrity to be compromised.

The chief minister praised PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for taking charge of the foreign ministry during a difficult period. He said the nation demonstrated unity when India attempted to threaten Pakistan.

Murad Ali Shah called on young people and citizens from all walks of life to remain united and work together for the country’s development.

He also condemned Israeli actions against Palestinians and expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people, urging the international community to take notice of the suffering caused by the ongoing violence.

He explicitly distinguished this new generic drug framework from the administration’s policy on branded and patented pharmaceuticals, stating that existing regulations for branded drugs would remain unchanged due to their ongoing success. Reports citing White House details indicate that the new generic tariffs will be executed under Section 232 trade authority, matching the legal foundation used for the administration’s earlier tariffs placed on branded pharmaceuticals in April. Trump also highlighted what he described as an unprecedented surge in new domestic pharmaceutical plant construction currently underway across the United States, presenting the new tariff schedule as a measure to reinforce an existing shift toward onshore manufacturing. The policy holds major implications for the broader American healthcare system and global exporters because generic medications account for nearly 90 per cent of all prescriptions filled in the United States. This action follows previous interventions in the pharmaceutical sector, including the 100 per cent tariff placed on branded drugs starting in October 2025, alongside a most-favoured-nation pricing push. That pricing policy led more than a dozen major pharmaceutical corporations, including Pfizer, Eli Lilly, and Novo Nordisk, to conclude agreements to reduce US drug prices in exchange for multi-year exemptions from import duties. For Indian drugmakers, the two-year transition window provides initial breathing room but lacks long-term security.     Karachi-Rohri rail track construction to begin nex…

    Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi has said construction of a 480-kilometre railway track from Karachi to Rohri will begin next year. He made the remarks during a meeting with Sindh Governor Nihal Hashmi, where Federal Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, Minister of State Kheial Das Kohistani, Fahad Haroon and other officials were also present. During the meeting, Abbasi said Pakistan Railways would soon begin transporting fuel, automobiles, minerals and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) through its network. He said around 11,000 tonnes of coal was currently being transported from Thar to the national grid every day. Abbasi also remarked that only two or three countries could be considered Pakistan’s enemies. The Sindh governor praised the government for ensuring uninterrupted supplies of petroleum products despite the ongoing challenges. Hashmi particularly appreciated the measures taken by Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik to maintain the supply of fuel across the country. Ali Pervaiz Malik said stakeholders had extended full cooperation to ensure the uninterrupted availability of petroleum products. The meeting also discussed measures to strengthen transportation and logistics infrastructure and improve coordination between relevant federal and provincial authorities.

    GUJRANWALA: The Gujranwala Waste Management Company (GWMC) has dismissed 575 employees over alleged absenteeism and poor performance, while another 184 employees deputed from other government departments have been repatriated to their parent departments. The action was taken following inspections and monitoring of sanitation operations in different union councils of the district, officials said. Managing Director of the Gujranwala Waste Management Company and Suthra Punjab, Abdul Razzaq Dogar, has stepped up monitoring of sanitation arrangements and ordered action against employees found absent from duty or failing to perform their assigned responsibilities. Sources said the company had received complaints regarding poor sanitation arrangements and the alleged absence of field workers. Following the complaints, the management conducted inspections and discreet monitoring to identify employees who were either not performing their duties or were allegedly drawing salaries without proper attendance. According to sources, the alleged irregularities were causing a financial burden of around Rs25 million a month on the public exchequer. Officials said the company’s management was now carrying out surprise inspections of two to three union councils every day. During these visits, sanitation arrangements, garbage collection and attendance of workers are checked without prior notice. “Where sanitation arrangements are found unsatisfactory or employees are absent from their assigned duties, action is taken,” Mr Dogar said. The disciplinary action has also been extended to supervisory staff. Show-cause notices have been issued to 46 officers and employees over negligence, while 52 have been given formal warnings. Besides, 21 officers and employees have been transferred or posted to different union councils and tehsils as part of efforts to improve monitoring and field operations. Officials said the management was also reviewing staff working against additional positions and those considered a burden on the organisation. The objective, they said, was to ensure that the available workforce was utilised effectively and that salaries were paid only to employees performing their assigned duties. Mr Dogar said action against inefficient and non-performing elements would continue without discrimination. He said the measures were expected to reduce unnecessary expenditure and improve the performance of sanitation operations, while also helping reduce public complaints regarding garbage collection and disposal. The company has also constituted special committees to monitor the collection and disposal of waste. The committees will submit daily reports on sanitation operations, according to officials. At the union council level, Suthra Punjab teams have also been made more active and placed under closer supervision of officers. The management has directed field staff and supervisory officers to ensure regular attendance and timely removal of garbage from residential and commercial areas. The latest action is part of efforts to improve sanitation services in Gujranwala district, where complaints regarding garbage accumulation, irregular collection and poor cleanliness have remained a concern in several areas. Officials said inspections and monitoring would continue and further disciplinary action would be taken against employees found negligent or absent from duty.

      Pakistan’s external debt has started rising again after recording a decline during the first nine months of the 2025-26 fiscal year, with official data showing a sharp increase during the final quarter. According to government documents, the country’s external debt increased by more than Rs1.24 trillion between March and June 2026. During the same three-month period, the government’s total debt rose by around Rs3.11 trillion, reflecting a significant increase in both external and domestic borrowing. The data shows that the government’s domestic debt increased by more than Rs1.87 trillion from March to June 2026. As a result, total domestic debt reached approximately Rs59.44 trillion by June 2026. Pakistan’s total external debt stood at around Rs22.96 trillion in March 2026. By the end of June, the figure had climbed to approximately Rs24.20 trillion, marking an increase of more than Rs1.24 trillion in just three months. The latest increase reverses the downward trend recorded earlier in the fiscal year. Pakistan reduced its external debt by around Rs207 billion during the first three months of 2026. From June 2025 to March 2026, the country’s external debt declined by approximately Rs458 billion.   The largest increase during the latest quarter came from long-term external borrowing. Government figures show that long-term external debt stood at around **Rs19.72 trillion in March 2026**, but increased to approximately **Rs21.77 trillion by June**, representing an increase of more than Rs2 trillion. In contrast, short-term external debt declined significantly during the same period. It fell by around Rs506 billion over the three months, partially offsetting the increase in long-term borrowing. The figures indicate that while Pakistan had made progress in reducing its external debt earlier in the fiscal year, borrowing picked up considerably during the final quarter. The sharp rise in long-term external liabilities remains a key factor behind the overall increase in the country’s external debt.

    LAHORE: Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat has approved a comprehensive “Sports Action Plan” to promote sports activities in schools across the province. The provincial education minister described the initiative as an important step for the educational and physical development of students. He said that linking sports with education would promote healthy competition, teamwork and discipline among students. Under the plan, major sports competitions will be held in schools across Punjab from October to December 2026 providing students with opportunities to showcase their talents. The prize money for students who perform exceptionally well has also been increased under the Sports Action Plan. The student securing first position will receive Rs. 500,000, the second-position holder will receive Rs. 300,000 while the student securing third position will receive a cash prize of Rs. 100,000. Rana Sikandar Hayat directed the relevant authorities to provide quality facilities to students participating in sports and stressed that no compromise should be made on the quality of sports kits. According to Education Department officials, the initiative aims to encourage students to actively participate in sports alongside their academic activities. Sports will help promote teamwork, discipline, healthy competition and leadership skills among students while also providing an opportunity to identify talented athletes. “This initiative will play an important role in promoting sports culture in Punjab schools,” an education department official stated. The campaign is being shared under the hashtags #PunjabEducation #SchoolSports #SportsActionPlan #RanaSikandarHayat, with the slogan: “Khelein Gay To Aage Barhein Gay” – Play and You Will Progress. The Education Department has not yet released further details regarding the venues of the competitions or the criteria for selecting students. The schedule for district-level sports competitions is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

    Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif has called for political tolerance, saying political rivalry is a normal part of democratic politics but differences should never turn into personal or political enmity. Addressing a PML-N meeting in Murree on Saturday, Nawaz Sharif said he was surprised by the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) objections regarding the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) elections. He noted that the PPP had previously been in power in AJK and said the political situation that emerged during the elections was a matter of concern for all political stakeholders. Nawaz said the situation had developed because previous governments had failed to properly fulfil their responsibilities. He stressed that political parties should respect democratic differences and avoid creating an atmosphere of hostility. The PML-N president said his party had always treated its political opponents with respect. He urged all political forces to demonstrate patience and tolerance and keep political disagreements within the limits of democratic debate. Nawaz Sharif said the PML-N had secured a simple majority after the first two phases of the AJK elections. The party has won 24 seats, while the PPP has secured 10 seats in the first two phases. The third phase of the election process is yet to be completed, with final results expected after the remaining polling process. Nawaz expressed confidence that the PML-N would form the government in AJK. He said the party would work to fulfil the commitments made to voters during the election campaign. He congratulated PML-N leaders and workers on their electoral performance and appreciated their efforts during the election campaign. Nawaz Sharif called for maximum financial resources to be provided to Azad Kashmir. He said improving the lives of the people and accelerating development should remain the government’s top priority. He claimed that the people of AJK were looking towards Punjab for development and better public services. Nawaz said development work had been initiated during Shehbaz Sharif’s tenure in Punjab and later expanded under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. He pledged that the PML-N would seek to replicate its development model in AJK. “The way we transformed Punjab, we will transform Azad Kashmir as well,” Nawaz said, while stressing that failing to deliver on promises made to voters could result in public disappointment. The PML-N president also praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his team for their efforts to address Pakistan’s economic and administrative challenges. He said the government inherited an extremely difficult situation but was now working to improve the country’s overall position. According to Nawaz, economic conditions were gradually improving and efforts were underway to put Pakistan on a stronger and more sustainable footing. He said the government was also seeking to reduce Pakistan’s dependence on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and move the country towards greater economic self-reliance.
