Can SM Prime’s Seaside Arena aid Cebu’s recovery from 2025 tourism slump?

CEBU, Philippines – After experiencing a dip in tourist visits in late 2025 — primarily due to disasters, Cebu’s business experts and leaders are hoping for an economic comeback, especially after the successful hosting of BINI’s Signals Concert in mid-July at the SM Seaside Cebu Arena.

On July 9, SM Prime formally announced the opening of the SM Seaside Cebu Arena in the South Road Properties, Cebu City, with the goal of ushering the beginning of a 20-year-old development plan in Cebu’s coastal business hub.

Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) President Regan Rex King told Rappler on July 24, that the SM Seaside Cebu Arena would help drive Cebu’s economic growth and even align with the goals of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) on promoting sports tourism.

“A world-class arena is more than a venue—it is a gateway to positioning Cebu as Asia’s next premier Sports, Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (SMICE) destination,” King said.

In a Facebook post, Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro shared similar sentiments with the CCCI head, stating that the arena reflects growing confidence in Cebu as a premier destination for tourism, business, culture, and world-class events.

“The new facility is expected to attract more local and international visitors, generate more business activity, create jobs, and open new opportunities for Cebuano workers, entrepreneurs, artists, athletes, and communities,” the governor said.

Visayas venue giant

Spanning more than seven hectares, the seaside arena is considered the largest facility of its kind in the Visayas.

The entire arena, worth P7 billion, was designed by award-winning global architecture firm Arquitectonica. Its full accommodation capacity is estimated at 25,000 guests.

Last July 11, P-pop girl group BINI had their Cebu leg of the BINI Signals 2026 anniversary concert series, selling out more than 20,000 tickets for the event.

For comparison, the SM Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena has a seating capacity of 15,000 guests, though it can be expanded to 20,000. On June 20 and 21, BINI sold out tickets for a two-night run at the SM MOA Arena, totaling roughly 30,000 guests over that weekend.

In 2025, the SM MOA Arena hosted more than 200 events and welcomed over 1.1 million attendees. The arena served as the Philippine stage for performances by artists like Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Maroon 5, and BTS, and even sporting events like the 2025 FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship.

The SM MOA Arena’s 2025 performance was a 10% increase from its 2024 performance with one million in total ticket attendance recorded.

The BINI concert was only the first of a long list of events set to be held at the SM Seaside Cebu Arena, and is expected to draw more domestic trips to Cebu.

Data from the Mactan Cebu International Airport Authority showed that total passenger traffic for the first half of 2025 only reached an estimated 5.9 million while the first half of 2026 surpassed 6.46 million, signaling a slight rebound in tourist visits from the previous year.

Promising future

Julia Abby Catibud, a frequent concert-goer, told Rappler on Friday, July 31, that the new Cebu arena was a “promising location.”

“As someone who frequently attends concerts at SM MOA Arena, I was totally amazed. The Cebu arena has a bigger queue area, and a way more industrialized look than SM MOA, relatively because the Cebu arena was newly built,” Catibud said.

Catibud shared her experience watching the concert of Filipino rock band IV of Spades at the arena, and noted the convenience of enjoying a concert in the province, instead of flying all the way to Manila. Catibud noted that her friends in Manila flew in for the July 11 BINI concert.

SM Prime Chairman Hans Sy told reporters in July that the SM Seaside Cebu Arena is only the initial part of a development project conceptualized no more than 20 years ago.

“My father has always believed in Cebu. Since before, when we had a small one in downtown, and then, when he had the opportunity to buy the super block in the North Reclamation [Area], he has always believed in Cebu,” Sy said.

According to Sy, he simply followed his father’s directive to develop the land. Among the list of projects in the 20-year-old pipeline include the upcoming SMX Convention Center Seaside Cebu

As of this writing, SM Prime has signed more than 20 major shows with local and international acts, live productions, and sports events to be held at the SM Seaside Cebu Arena in 2026.

In Sy’s vision, the odds are now greater on not just bring in more tourists but also world-class performances and celebrities in the country.

“I do believe with now two [arena] venues, there’s a certain advantage that we can convince a lot of [international artists] to come [to the country],” Sy added. – Rappler.com

PBS revises import data after billions of dollars in discrepancies

The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has revised the country’s monthly and annual import figures after uncovering major discrepancies in trade data, with the adjustments reaching billions of dollars over certain periods. The data revisions, which could amount to as much as $30 billion for some periods, are expected to have a notable impact on Pakistan’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) calculations and other key economic indicators. The statistical agency has incorporated the updated import figures across several major sectors as part of the data reconciliation process. According to senior government officials, the PBS has completed a detailed report outlining the discrepancies and the methodology used to revise the import statistics. The report has been submitted to the Ministry of Finance, which is currently examining its potential implications. The ministry is expected to make the findings public by the end of August 2026. Differences emerge between PBS and SBP data The issue came to light after officials identified significant differences between import figures compiled by the PBS and corresponding data maintained by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP). The discrepancies were initially detected while comparing Pakistan’s trade figures with China. Further scrutiny subsequently revealed differences in specific tariff lines and categories of imports that had not been fully reflected in the PBS data. Following the discovery, the Pakistan Single Window and other relevant government institutions became involved in the reconciliation process. The objective was to identify the source of the differences, verify transaction-level information and ensure that import statistics accurately reflected the country’s external trade. The matter later attracted the attention of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which has been closely monitoring Pakistan’s economic data and statistical reporting under its reform programme. IMF seeks greater transparency The IMF had previously highlighted weaknesses in Pakistan’s procedures for collecting, compiling and consolidating import data. It called for improvements in the statistical framework and greater transparency about the scale and economic impact of the discrepancies. Under the agreed reform requirements, the PBS was tasked with publishing revised monthly and annual import statistics by the end of August 2026. The statistical agency is also expected to provide an explanation of the changes and their impact on previously reported figures. The revisions are particularly significant because imports are an important component of national accounts and external-sector statistics. Changes in import values can influence the calculation of GDP, trade balances, current account figures and other macroeconomic indicators. GDP impact under review The Ministry of Finance is examining the PBS report largely because of the potential impact of the revised import figures on national economic data. Officials are assessing how the changes could affect previously reported GDP estimates and other indicators based on import statistics. The scale of the revisions means that the exercise could result in adjustments to historical economic data, depending on how the revised figures are incorporated into the national accounts. Officials, however, are expected to provide further details once the Ministry of Finance completes its review and the PBS publishes the revised statistics. IMF review mission approaching The development comes ahead of the IMF’s next review of Pakistan’s economic reform programme. The Fund’s review mission under the country’s $7 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) is expected to visit Pakistan by early September 2026. The publication of revised import data before the mission’s arrival is likely to be closely watched, as strengthening the reliability and transparency of economic statistics remains an important element of Pakistan’s commitments under the IMF programme.

PM seeks broader JICA partnership in skills, miner…

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday called for expanding Pakistan’s cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), identifying skills development, mineral exploration and support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as key areas for future collaboration. The prime minister made the remarks during a meeting in Islamabad with a nine-member JICA delegation led by its President, Dr Tanaka Akihiko. He said Pakistan deeply values its decades-long partnership with Japan and expressed confidence that the latest engagement would further strengthen bilateral development ties. Highlighting the government’s economic agenda, Shehbaz said Pakistan had emerged from a challenging economic period through coordinated reforms and was now focused on achieving sustainable and inclusive growth. He noted that fiscal reforms had significantly improved revenue collection over the past three years, creating greater capacity for national development. The premier stressed that equipping young people with modern skills, expanding technical and vocational education, creating employment opportunities and empowering women remain among the government’s highest priorities. He said Pakistan is keen to benefit from JICA’s expertise in these sectors. Shehbaz also identified the country’s vast mineral resources as a major area of economic potential and invited JICA to provide technical assistance to help develop the sector and attract greater investment. Discussing support for businesses, the prime minister said reforms at the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) had strengthened the institution. He expressed hope that enhanced cooperation with JICA would help improve SME productivity, encourage entrepreneurship and boost Pakistan’s exports. During the meeting, Shehbaz also conveyed condolences over the recent earthquake in Japan. Dr Tanaka thanked the prime minister for his message of sympathy and appreciated the warm hospitality extended to the Japanese delegation during its visit. The JICA president reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Pakistan in healthcare, education, urban and rural development, industrial growth and technical training. He said future projects would be designed in line with the development priorities of both the federal and provincial governments. Dr Tanaka also acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts to promote peace and stability in the Middle East. Separately, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Cheema met the JICA delegation to discuss future development initiatives. He invited the agency to participate in financing the Main Line-1 (ML-1) railway project alongside the Asian Development Bank and other development partners, describing the railway upgrade as vital for improving trade, transportation and industrial connectivity across the country. Cheema also sought JICA’s support for expanding internet connectivity in rural areas to promote freelancing and digital commerce. He requested technical assistance for feasibility studies of major infrastructure projects, an area in which JICA expressed readiness to cooperate.
