Sri Lanka’s Tharanga storms to Commonwealth gold

Pakistan’s star javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem failed to secure a medal in the men’s javelin final at the Commonwealth Games, finishing ninth in a field of 12 athletes.

Arshad entered the competition as one of Pakistan’s strongest medal contenders. However, he was unable to produce the long throws needed to challenge for a place on the podium.

His opening attempt was declared a foul and did not count towards the final standings. In his second attempt, he registered a throw of 77.41 metres. His third and final throw measured 75.39 metres, leaving him in ninth position at the end of the event.

Sri Lanka’s Romesh Tharanga delivered the best performance of the competition to win the gold medal with a throw of 89.75 metres. His effort secured the top spot after an impressive display throughout the final.

India’s Neeraj Chopra claimed the silver medal with a best throw of 85.83 metres. Fellow Indian athlete Yashvir Singh completed the podium by winning the bronze medal after recording a throw of 85.41 metres.

The men’s javelin final featured 12 athletes from different Commonwealth nations, with several competitors producing throws beyond the 85-metre mark. Arshad was unable to find his rhythm during the competition and remained well behind the leading performers.

The result came as a disappointment for Pakistani fans, who had hoped Arshad would add another major international medal to his impressive career. Despite missing out on the podium, he remains one of Pakistan’s most successful athletes and has consistently represented the country with distinction at international events.

Arshad has previously won medals at major competitions and is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading javelin throwers. His achievements have inspired a new generation of athletes in Pakistan and raised the profile of athletics in the country.

Hull and Wood provide for home women’s open win

Charley Hull began the week of the final golf major of the year by convincing her caddie Adam Woodward he had won a lottery prize worth £100,000. Unfortunately for Woodward, Hull had bought the ticket in a Blackpool joke shop. The only way he can really hit the jackpot is if his boss breaks her major duck at this week’s AIG Women’s Open. “He was like, ‘I’ve never won one of these things, but today could be my lucky day’,” Hull told BBC Sport. “And he was scratching it, scratching it, scratching it, and then his face dropped. ‘Oh my god,’ he said. ‘I’ve won 100 grand. I’ve won 100 grand.’ He takes his hat off. He takes his glasses off. He’s got sweat dripping down, he’s shaking, he’s so excited.” Hull then broke the bad news. “I think he nearly quit the job then,” the 30-year-old said. “I felt really bad.” The Englishwoman has nine professional wins but is yet to land a major title, and she will be among the leading contenders at the year’s final major. World number one Nelly Korda, who won the US Women’s Open, and Japan’s Yuka Saso are also expected to feature prominently. Another home hope is 22-year-old Lottie Woad, who has been gaining attention after a strong start to her professional career. After her win in Ohio, Woad lost a play-off to Yamashita at the Meijer LPGA Classic, missing a short putt for victory on the final green in Michigan. She says the biggest lesson she has learned is not to be too hard on herself. “Definitely I’ve learned a lot,” said Woad. “Obviously from losing the play-off but having my first lead in a major too. I think it’s quite easy to get frustrated and down yourself. You’re playing every week and obviously all expectations are to try and win and pretty much every week you’re not.” There are similarities between Woad and Hull, who was also 22 when she won this title here. “I watched it on TV and she was always one of the players I looked up to when I was younger,” Woad said. “If I could do what she did here, then I’ll definitely be happy with that.” There is plenty to potentially excite home galleries this week  and should either Woad or Hull emerge with the trophy, those fans will know they have held a ticket of genuine value.

OPEC+ expected to approve another oil output increase for September

OPEC+ is widely expected to approve another increase in oil production when its members meet virtually on Sunday, as the alliance continues to adjust supply while global energy markets remain affected by ongoing geopolitical tensions. According to market analysts, Saudi Arabia, Russia and several other key members of the alliance are likely to raise their combined production target by around 188,000 barrels per day for September. If approved, the increase would continue a series of monthly production hikes introduced this year and is expected to mark the final step in the group’s current plan to gradually restore previously reduced output. OPEC+, which includes members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allied producers, introduced major production cuts between late 2022 and 2023 after concerns that falling oil prices could weaken global energy markets. Those reductions removed nearly six million barrels of oil per day from the market in three separate phases. As demand gradually recovered, the group shifted its strategy by slowly increasing production, beginning in 2025, to balance supply while supporting market stability. A September increase would complete the reversal of the second package of production cuts introduced during that period. However, analysts note that higher production targets do not necessarily mean actual oil output will increase by the same amount. Several member countries are currently unable to reach their assigned quotas because of declining production capacity, ageing infrastructure or operational challenges. Energy analyst Giovanni Staunovo of UBS said many producers are already pumping below their official targets, making further quota increases less significant in practical terms. He noted that production capacity has declined in several member states, limiting their ability to take full advantage of higher output allowances. Regional tensions have also affected oil exports. Gulf producers continue to face challenges because shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been disrupted during the conflict involving Iran. Although maritime traffic briefly improved after a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran was signed in June, transport through one of the world’s busiest oil routes remains uncertain. Russia is also dealing with production difficulties as repeated Ukrainian drone attacks have targeted parts of its energy infrastructure. Current Russian oil production remains close to nine million barrels per day, well below its official production target of 9.8 million barrels per day, highlighting the gap between quotas and actual output. Some OPEC+ members, including Iraq, have indicated they want to increase production significantly once conditions allow. At the same time, the alliance is reviewing the maximum sustainable production capacity of each member to help determine future output allocations. These discussions are expected to play an important role in setting production quotas for 2027 and beyond. Analysts believe negotiations over future production targets could become more challenging after the September meeting. While they say the alliance remains united for now, the departure of the United Arab Emirates from OPEC+ earlier this year has raised questions about the group’s long term cohesion. The UAE said its decision to leave was based on national interests and long term strategic goals, pointing to major investments aimed at expanding its oil production capacity beyond the limits previously set by the alliance. Despite these challenges, OPEC+ is expected to continue coordinating production policies in an effort to maintain stability in the global oil market as economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions continue to influence energy demand and supply.

    Jamaat-e-Islami announces nationwide protest again…

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Emir Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman has announced a nationwide protest against the petroleum levy on Friday, August 7, urging citizens across Pakistan to participate in what he described as a decisive demonstration against rising fuel taxes and worsening economic conditions. According to a statement issued from the party’s headquarters in Mansoorah, preparations for the nationwide campaign have entered their final phase. Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and workers are actively engaging with communities through corner meetings, public awareness campaigns, and outreach efforts aimed at mobilizing citizens for the protest. Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman said the demonstrations are not driven by political interests but are intended to represent the concerns of ordinary Pakistanis struggling with inflation, unemployment, and what he called an unbearable tax burden. He maintained that the movement seeks economic relief for the public rather than political gain. The JI chief announced that he will address a women’s protest rally on August 6 at Wahdat Road in Lahore, organized by the party’s women’s wing. He said women would also raise their voices against government economic policies and support the campaign demanding relief from rising living costs. Appealing directly to the country’s youth, Hafiz Naeem urged motorcyclists to join the demonstrations on August 7 and participate peacefully. He stated that protesters would stage sit-ins on major highways and temporarily block roads connecting districts to press the government to address public demands. However, he emphasized that emergency vehicles, including ambulances and rescue services, would be allowed to pass without obstruction. The Jamaat-e-Islami leader also warned the government against interfering with citizens’ constitutional and democratic right to peaceful protest. He said any attempt to suppress the demonstrations would be the responsibility of the authorities. Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman called on the government to immediately abolish the petroleum levy, review expensive agreements with Independent Power Producers (IPPs), eliminate electricity load-shedding, and implement effective measures to control inflation. He added that the party’s peaceful protest movement would continue until what he described as unjust economic policies are reversed. The planned demonstrations are expected to take place across multiple cities and districts, making them one of Jamaat-e-Islami’s largest nationwide protest campaigns focused on economic issues and public relief in recent months.

Trump faces awkward moment as Epstein letter repor…

WASHINGTON: An uncomfortable chapter in the long-running controversy surrounding President Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein returned to the spotlight after journalists whose reporting brought an alleged birthday letter linked to the two men into public view were honored at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. The moment came during the rescheduled annual dinner on July 24, where Trump was present as The Wall Street Journal received the inaugural Katharine Graham Award for Courage and Accountability for its investigative reporting on his past relationship with Epstein. The award recognized the Journal’s reporting on a controversial letter allegedly written by Trump for Epstein’s 50th birthday in 2003. Trump has denied writing the letter and has strongly disputed the newspaper’s account. The report nevertheless triggered renewed public attention on Trump’s past association with Epstein and contributed to wider scrutiny of documents connected to the late financier. What made the award particularly striking was Trump’s presence in the room. According to reports from the event, Trump briefly congratulated the journalists as they received the honor. His reaction attracted attention because he had previously threatened legal action against the Journal over its Epstein reporting. The dinner itself had already been surrounded by unusual circumstances. The original White House Correspondents’ Association gathering in April was disrupted by a shooting incident, forcing the event to be postponed. The rescheduled dinner took place in July under heightened security measures. Trump also used his speech to take several pointed shots at journalists and political opponents, continuing his frequently combative relationship with the American press. The event nevertheless maintained its traditional role of honoring journalists for investigative and public-interest reporting. The Epstein controversy remains politically sensitive in the United States. Epstein, who died in federal custody in 2019 while facing sex-trafficking charges, had social and professional connections with numerous prominent people. The release and examination of documents related to his activities have repeatedly generated political controversy. For Trump, the latest episode creates an unusual image: a president sitting in the audience as journalists he has publicly challenged receive an award for reporting on one of the most politically explosive stories surrounding his past. The development is likely to keep the Epstein controversy in the headlines, particularly as questions surrounding previously unreleased documents and Trump’s historical relationship with Epstein continue to attract intense public and political scrutiny.

Central Command announces completion of two-hour retaliatory strike campaign against Iranian military targets

The United States military has completed a concentrated two-hour campaign of heavy air strikes targeting dozens of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps installations across Iran, according to an official statement released by US Central Command. The precision operations focused primarily on disabling strategic military assets, including high-level command centres, missile production and drone manufacturing facilities, coastal radar surveillance outposts, integrated air defence networks, and naval infrastructure. Military officials confirmed that the retaliatory operation was executed following an attempted surprise ballistic missile attack launched by Iranian forces against American military personnel stationed in the region. Central Command stated that US defensive systems successfully intercepted all incoming Iranian missiles, preventing casualties or facility damage. According to defence spokespersons, the targeted strikes were designed to degrade Iran’s offensive capabilities, neutralise recurring threats posed by regional proxy forces, and safeguard commercial shipping corridors and partner nations across the Arabian Gulf.

1,300-year-old shipwreck hides incredible gold tre…

Archaeologists have uncovered an extraordinary collection of gold coins and precious jewelry from a sunken Byzantine-era ship near Croatia’s southern coastline, offering new insights into the empire’s maritime history and suggesting that a high-ranking official may have been among the passengers. The ancient shipwreck was first discovered more than a decade ago, but researchers spent several years conducting detailed underwater excavations before releasing their findings. The results, announced on Thursday, indicate that the vessel most likely dates back to the seventh or eighth century AD, making it one of the region’s most significant archaeological discoveries in recent years. According to experts, the remarkable collection of valuables recovered from the wreck suggests that the ship was far more than an ordinary merchant vessel. Instead, archaeologists believe it may have been transporting an influential government official, noble, or other prominent figure, accompanied by attendants or security personnel. Among the most valuable discoveries are gold coins minted during the reigns of four Byzantine emperors from the Heraclian dynasty, which ruled between AD 610 and 711. Researchers also recovered ornate gold fittings from luxury boxes decorated with rubies, emeralds, and pearls, highlighting the wealth and status of those on board. The quality and rarity of the artifacts provide important clues about the Byzantine Empire’s political, economic, and cultural life during the early medieval period. Experts say the recovered objects demonstrate the sophisticated craftsmanship of the era and reveal the importance of maritime travel for government officials and elite members of society. The ongoing archaeological investigation is expected to deepen historians’ understanding of Byzantine trade routes, royal travel, and naval activity across the Adriatic Sea. Researchers hope that further analysis of the ship’s structure, cargo, and recovered artifacts will help reconstruct the vessel’s final journey and explain the circumstances that led to its sinking centuries ago. Officials involved in the excavation described the discovery as a major milestone in underwater archaeology. As conservation work continues, many of the recovered treasures are expected to be carefully preserved and studied, providing valuable information for future research into the Byzantine Empire and its influence across southeastern Europe. The discovery underscores the importance of underwater archaeological exploration and demonstrates how centuries-old shipwrecks continue to reveal remarkable stories about ancient civilizations, their rulers, and the maritime networks that connected them across the Mediterranean world.
