Thai Government Confirms Sufficient Fuel Supplies During Songkran Holiday

BANGKOK — The government has confirmed there are sufficient fuel supplies to meet demand during the upcoming Songkran holiday, as authorities intensify nationwide distribution and monitoring efforts to ease public concerns over possible shortages during one of Thailand’s busiest travel periods, the Bangkok Post reported.

Thai Government to Roll Out Fuel Relief Measures from April 1

The government understands public anxiety over fuel access, particularly during peak travel times, Rachada Dhnadirek, an assistant to a minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office, said on Sunday. She said Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has been supervising the situation and has ordered proactive measures to ensure fuel availability across the country.

Proactive Distribution Measures

These measures include boosting fuel distribution efficiency by supplying approximately 7 million litres per day to wholesale distributors, known as jobbers, to reduce congestion at petrol stations. Operators have also been instructed to increase reserves and prepare standby fuel trucks in high-demand areas. Special refuelling points are being arranged for public transport vehicles in coordination with the Interior and Transport ministries.

To improve flexibility, the government has temporarily reduced mandatory fuel reserve requirements from 3 percent to 1 percent, allowing for faster imports of refined oil, Ms Rachada said. Additionally, the public can check real-time fuel availability nationwide via the Fuel-Now application or its website.

Diversifying Supply Sources

Authorities are also diversifying crude and refined fuel imports to offset uncertainty stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The Energy and Foreign Affairs ministries are working together through diplomatic and trade channels to secure supplies from multiple producers, including Brazil, Azerbaijan and Nigeria, with Thai refineries assessing their suitability, Ms Rachada said.

Fuel shipments have been scheduled to ensure continuity of supply. More than 36 million barrels of oil are expected to arrive in Thai waters through May, including over 24 million barrels in April alone — when travel demand peaks — and a further 8.96 million barrels in May. “The volumes are sufficient to meet national demand, with additional imports planned in line with consumption trends,” she said.

Prime Minister’s Unannounced Visit

To assess the situation firsthand, Mr Anutin on Sunday conducted an unannounced visit to a petrol station in Nakhon Phanom, where he instructed local authorities to ensure fuel availability throughout the holiday period. Officials said the situation in the northeastern province has improved, with fuel stations operating normally and no long queues reported, indicating that supply distribution measures are taking effect.

Stable Production and Consumption

Meanwhile, Chatchai Khunlohit, deputy director-general of the Department of Energy Business, reported stable fuel production and consumption. Diesel output averages 82.21 million litres per day, with domestic use at 82.99 million litres, alongside 4.43 million litres in exports. Combined diesel demand reached 87.42 million litres per day.

Petrol output stands at 34.4 million litres, with total demand at 36.09 million litres. Mr Chatchai noted that diesel consumption has risen from approximately 70 million litres per day earlier this year, reflecting stronger economic activity and increased travel.

Crackdown on Illegal Storage

The Department of Special Investigation, working with the Department of Energy Business, police and local authorities, inspected fuel traders nationwide on March 24–25. In Saraburi, officials uncovered three sites illegally storing and selling a combined 31,299 litres of diesel and petrol without licences, leading to legal action.

The government’s efforts to secure supply chains and crack down on illegal hoarding aim to ensure that motorists traveling during the Songkran festival — one of the most significant holidays on the Thai calendar — will have access to the fuel they need without the long queues and shortages that have plagued some regions in recent weeks.

For many of these workers, employment in Saudi Arabia provides a vital source of income for families back home. The deaths in Riyadh have therefore sent shockwaves beyond the immediate workplace, leaving families anxiously awaiting the return of their loved ones. Authorities are expected to investigate the cause of the fire and examine safety conditions at the factory. The focus will also be on determining whether violations contributed to the deadly blaze.     ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is set to take the first three-year leadership of a new secretariat established under the defence agreement signed by Pakistan, Türkiye and Saudi Arabia in Makkah on Aug 7, giving Islamabad a prominent role in coordinating the emerging regional security framework. According to Turkish and international media reports, the secretariat will serve as the central mechanism for implementing decisions taken by the three countries and coordinating their growing defence cooperation. After Pakistan’s initial three-year term, leadership is expected to pass to Saudi Arabia and then Türkiye. The agreement is built around a collective-security principle under which an armed attack against one member would be regarded as an attack against all three. However, unlike NATO’s automatic response mechanism, the pact leaves the nature of any response to be determined according to the circumstances and the request of the affected country. A high-level council comprising foreign and defence ministers as well as military chiefs is also expected to oversee the arrangement. The council is expected to meet twice a year, while cooperation could range from intelligence sharing and logistics to direct military assistance when required. The partnership also places a strong emphasis on defence technology. The three countries plan to expand cooperation in unmanned systems, electronic warfare and artificial intelligence, alongside joint military exercises designed to improve coordination among their armed forces. Joint defence production, research and technology transfer are also part of the broader framework. For Pakistan, the first leadership term could prove strategically significant. Islamabad already maintains longstanding defence ties with both Ankara and Riyadh, and its role at the secretariat could give it greater influence in regional security diplomacy. Türkiye has stressed that the agreement is defensive and is not directed against any particular country. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the pact is intended to strengthen regional security rather than replace existing alliances.     KARACHI: The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) on Friday announced the results of the Intermediate Part-II annual examinations 2026. Students from government colleges secured top positions in several groups, highlighting the strong performance of public-sector educational institutions. BIEK Chairman Professor Ghaffar Muhammad Lakho said the results were encouraging for government colleges. He noted that the top two positions in the pre-medical group were won by students of a government college. According to him, this reflects the growing trust of students and parents in public-sector education. In the pre-medical group, Hafsa Khan of BAMM PECHS Government College for Women secured first position. She scored 1,011 marks out of a total of 1,100. Her classmate Huda Sarwar claimed the second position with 1,007 marks. Amina Aziz of Bahria College, Karsaz, secured third place after obtaining 1,004 marks. Controller of Examinations Zarina Rashid said that 23,613 students registered for the pre-medical examinations. A total of 23,007 candidates appeared in the exams. Out of them, 14,134 students passed. The overall pass percentage in the pre-medical group remained 61.43%. Female students dominated the Arts Private Group by securing all top three positions. Rafia Shoaib Jaliwala topped the group with 925 marks. Almas Fatima and Khansa Raza jointly secured the second position with 902 marks each. Amra Shoaib Jaliwala stood third after scoring 901 marks. Students also performed well in the Home Economics Group. Azka Imran of Rana Liaquat Ali Khan Government College of Home Economics secured first position with 973 marks out of 1,200. Aila Anwar obtained second position with 968 marks. Yamna Shariq secured third place by scoring 953 marks. Special candidates also recorded an impressive performance. In the Arts Regular category, Syed Hammad Ali secured first position with 1,004 marks. Taha Ahmed came second with 990 marks, while Maryam Bibi claimed third position after scoring 985 marks. The board said the pass percentage in the Arts Private Group stood at 50.04%. The Home Economics Group recorded a pass rate of 52.47%. The highest success ratio was observed among special candidates, where the pass percentage reached 95.87%.
