Thai PM Anutin Suspends Gun Purchase Licences After School Shooting

BANGKOK, Thailand – Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul on Tuesday suspended the issuance of permits to buy firearms and said existing licences would be reviewed, days after a 14-year-old gunman killed nine people in a school shooting in Nonthaburi.

Eight Dead and At Least 22 Injured in Nonthaburi School Shooting, Grandparents Killed

Mr Anutin directed Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilprapunt to expedite a new gun control law with stronger controls and significantly harsher penalties, with a new bill to be proposed within 60 days . Police have been ordered to stop renewing permits enabling people to buy firearms, while the Interior Ministry and Royal Thai Police have been instructed to suspend renewals of Por 3 (purchase permits), Por 4 (possession and use permits), and Por 12 (carry permits) until the cabinet decides otherwise, government spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek said.

Registered firearms must be kept at home and cannot be carried in public, Mr Anutin said, reiterating existing law. He warned people not to believe claims that guns could be carried for self-defence, saying firearms often end up harming their owners. The new legislation will require illegal firearms to be surrendered to the state within a specified period, with temporary exemption from punishment for those who comply.

The cabinet also approved long-term measures, including introducing real-time electronic licensing and transaction records linked to Customs and Revenue departments, recording firearm identities, tightening controls on dealers, and increasing penalties. Possession licences would require renewal every three years, and dealers and shooting ranges would have to reconcile sales against inventory daily . Education Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong has proposed new school safety measures, including screening everyone who enters education premises for illegal objects and weapons.

Hamza Shehbaz set for key coordination role at PM …

Hamza Shehbaz, son of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and a former chief minister of Punjab, is expected to assume a more active political role at the federal level, according to informed sources. Sources said an office has been allocated to Hamza Shehbaz at the Prime Minister’s Office. Although he has not yet been given any formal government position, he is likely to play an important role in coordinating between the prime minister and ruling party lawmakers. His main responsibility will be to engage with members of the National Assembly (MNAs) and address issues related to their constituencies. He will work to ensure that development projects, administrative matters and public concerns raised by lawmakers are communicated to the relevant authorities for timely resolution. Government legislators often seek meetings with the prime minister to discuss problems faced by their constituencies. However, due to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s busy official schedule, it is not always possible for him to meet every lawmaker. Hamza Shehbaz is expected to help manage this coordination process and facilitate communication between the government and parliamentary members. Sources said his office is located on the sixth floor of the Prime Minister’s Office. A meeting room has also been allocated alongside his office, where he is expected to hold meetings with lawmakers, party representatives and visiting delegations. Hamza Shehbaz is currently an MNA from Lahore’s NA-118 constituency. He has previous experience in coordinating with elected representatives, having performed a similar role during Shehbaz Sharif’s tenure as Punjab chief minister. Sources further said that office staff has also been assigned to assist him in carrying out his responsibilities. There is currently one vacant adviser position in the Prime Minister’s team. Under the Constitution, the prime minister can appoint up to five advisers. At present, four adviser positions are occupied. However, sources indicated that Hamza Shehbaz may not immediately receive the status of adviser or special assistant. Instead, the government is considering assigning him the title of coordinator to avoid political criticism over his appointment. If approved, he is expected to perform his responsibilities from behind the scenes while assisting the government in maintaining close coordination with lawmakers and resolving constituency-related matters.

Lively appeared alongside both actresses in the movie, making the footage an especially meaningful reminder of their connection.  Alongside the video, Lively expressed gratitude for the joy the two women had brought to audiences. She also urged her followers to “be kind,” highlighting the importance of remembering that people may be dealing with private struggles that others cannot see.  Panettiere died on August 16, 2026, at the age of 36. The actress was known for major roles in Heroes, Nashville and the Scream franchise. Her family described her as a “force of nature” who brought immense love and joy to those around her.  Her death has prompted an outpouring of grief from friends and former co-stars. Connie Britton, Viola Davis, Selma Blair and several other stars have shared memories of Panettiere, remembering her talent, warmth and determination.  For Lively, the loss also carried echoes of another heartbreaking Hollywood tragedy. Michelle Trachtenberg, who worked with Lively on Gossip Girl, died in February 2025 at the age of 39. Lively previously paid tribute to Trachtenberg, describing her as a deeply kind and fiercely loyal person whose presence could immediately change the energy in a room.  Trachtenberg’s death was later determined to have resulted from complications of diabetes. Her passing deeply affected the Gossip Girl cast, with Lively among those who publicly remembered her.  By placing Panettiere and Trachtenberg together in her latest tribute, Lively appeared to reflect on the fragility of life and the importance of appreciating people while they are still here. Her message comes at a difficult time for Panettiere’s loved ones and fans. The actress had recently opened up about her life and struggles in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, giving audiences a more personal understanding of the experiences behind her public image.  Lively’s tribute ultimately focused less on celebrity and more on humanity. Her call for kindness serves as a reminder that compassion can matter deeply, especially when someone’s private struggles are not visible to the outside world.
