ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has praised the singers, performers and production team behind a new Balochi patriotic song released by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) for Independence Day.

The prime minister shared the song’s video on X and expressed his appreciation for everyone involved in the project.

Shehbaz said the song beautifully reflected the spirit of love for Pakistan. He added that the patriotic composition had filled him with pride.

The prime minister particularly acknowledged the artists and singers for presenting the national message through the Balochi language. He said the song showcased the cultural richness of Balochistan while reinforcing feelings of patriotism.

He also commended the producers and other members of the team for their contribution. According to Shehbaz, their efforts had successfully conveyed a powerful message of devotion to the homeland.

The Balochi-language song forms part of the Independence Day celebrations being held across Pakistan. It combines patriotic sentiments with the region’s distinctive cultural identity.

The prime minister said such creative initiatives help highlight Pakistan’s linguistic and cultural diversity. He noted that regional languages provide meaningful ways to express national pride and strengthen a shared sense of identity.

Independence Day preparations are underway across the country, with patriotic songs, cultural programmes and other activities planned to mark the occasion.

High-Powered Delegation Reflects Strategic Focus The composition of the Pakistani delegation highlights the multi-faceted priorities of the three-day state visit, spanning defense, diplomacy, and communication. Traveling alongside Prime Minister Sharif is the Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, whose presence underlines the vital military-to-military and security architecture underpinning the bilateral relationship.     GUJRANWALA: The Gujranwala Waste Management Company (GWMC) has dismissed 575 employees over alleged absenteeism and poor performance, while another 184 employees deputed from other government departments have been repatriated to their parent departments. The action was taken following inspections and monitoring of sanitation operations in different union councils of the district, officials said. Managing Director of the Gujranwala Waste Management Company and Suthra Punjab, Abdul Razzaq Dogar, has stepped up monitoring of sanitation arrangements and ordered action against employees found absent from duty or failing to perform their assigned responsibilities. Sources said the company had received complaints regarding poor sanitation arrangements and the alleged absence of field workers. Following the complaints, the management conducted inspections and discreet monitoring to identify employees who were either not performing their duties or were allegedly drawing salaries without proper attendance. According to sources, the alleged irregularities were causing a financial burden of around Rs25 million a month on the public exchequer. Officials said the company’s management was now carrying out surprise inspections of two to three union councils every day. During these visits, sanitation arrangements, garbage collection and attendance of workers are checked without prior notice. “Where sanitation arrangements are found unsatisfactory or employees are absent from their assigned duties, action is taken,” Mr Dogar said. The disciplinary action has also been extended to supervisory staff. Show-cause notices have been issued to 46 officers and employees over negligence, while 52 have been given formal warnings. Besides, 21 officers and employees have been transferred or posted to different union councils and tehsils as part of efforts to improve monitoring and field operations. Officials said the management was also reviewing staff working against additional positions and those considered a burden on the organisation. The objective, they said, was to ensure that the available workforce was utilised effectively and that salaries were paid only to employees performing their assigned duties. Mr Dogar said action against inefficient and non-performing elements would continue without discrimination. He said the measures were expected to reduce unnecessary expenditure and improve the performance of sanitation operations, while also helping reduce public complaints regarding garbage collection and disposal. The company has also constituted special committees to monitor the collection and disposal of waste. The committees will submit daily reports on sanitation operations, according to officials. At the union council level, Suthra Punjab teams have also been made more active and placed under closer supervision of officers. The management has directed field staff and supervisory officers to ensure regular attendance and timely removal of garbage from residential and commercial areas. The latest action is part of efforts to improve sanitation services in Gujranwala district, where complaints regarding garbage accumulation, irregular collection and poor cleanliness have remained a concern in several areas. Officials said inspections and monitoring would continue and further disciplinary action would be taken against employees found negligent or absent from duty.

    Punjab to modernize Civil Defence with Rs500m equipment

    Lahore – Under the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif for a “Safe Punjab,” the Civil Defence Resilience Corps is being modernized in line with contemporary requirements to help establish a safer society and respond effectively to emergencies. In this regard, Punjab Home Secretary Dr. Ahmed Javed Qazi visited the Civil Defence Headquarters where a smartly turned-out Civil Defence contingent presented him with a guard of honour. The Home Secretary inspected a display of modern equipment and also inaugurated a renovated block of the headquarters. On the occasion, Director Civil Defence Tasneem Ali Khan and Zigham Nawaz briefed the Punjab Home Secretary on the capacity, modern equipment and rescue capabilities of Civil Defence. The modern equipment displayed by Civil Defence included aerial-lift drones, IED bomb-disposal drones, bomb-disposal robots, anti-drone guns, electric sirens, bomb-disposal suits, bomb blankets, mine detectors, snake cameras, hook-and-line kits, mobile bomb-disposal bikes and advanced firefighting equipment. Speaking on the occasion, Punjab Home Secretary Dr. Ahmed Javed Qazi said that the Civil Defence Resilience Corps is an important step toward a safe, capable and responsible Punjab. He said the Punjab government is taking practical measures to bring Civil Defence in line with the requirements of the modern era. He said that modern equipment worth Rs500 million has been purchased to modernize Civil Defence. He added that the advanced aerial-lift drones are capable of rescuing people trapped in difficult-to-access areas and can carry loads of up to 200 kilograms. Dr. Ahmed Javed Qazi said that Civil Defence is equally important during both peace and wartime and serves as the first line of response for district administrations during any emergency situation. The Punjab Home Secretary said that the Chief Minister has increased the honorarium of Civil Defence volunteers in recognition of their services and performance. He urged citizens to join Civil Defence as volunteers according to their abilities. According to him, more than 350,000 citizens have so far registered as Civil Defence volunteers. The Home Secretary said that all Civil Defence volunteers are being provided with Basic Life Support (BLS) training so that they can provide timely assistance to save lives during natural disasters, accidents and medical emergencies. He appealed to citizens to become part of Civil Defence by registering as volunteers through the online portal VCD.HOME.GOP.PK.

    Jeff Bezos throws weight behind $2.6B AI startup fixing the chip material crunch

    Jeff Bezos has placed his bet on CuspAI, an artificial intelligence startup working to discover and design advanced materials for the next generation of computer chips. The investment aims squarely at the material shortage behind the ongoing chip crisis that has rattled the tech industry over the past several months. This is not  CuspAI’s first big funding win. Back in July, the company closed a $450 million Series B round, pushing its valuation to $2.6 billion. That round pulled in heavyweight backers, including Bezos Expeditions, AMD Ventures, Nvidia, and Meta. CuspAI was founded in 2024 with a much narrower focus. Originally, the company built AI tools to identify and test materials for water purification and carbon capture projects. Since then, its mission has grown considerably. By expanding into AI infrastructure and chip materials, the startup now positions itself as a possible fix during a period of serious supply chain strain. One of CuspAI’s key advantages lies in finding substitutes. The company’s AI can search for alternative materials that mimic the properties of scarce elements like tantalum, gallium, and iridium. These elements are becoming harder to source as demand climbs, particularly with the explosion of AI infrastructure worldwide. The International Energy Agency has already flagged concerns that data centre demand for gallium could outpace supply within the next few years. Adding to the pressure, rising geopolitical tension between the US and China over rare earth minerals continues to complicate global supply chains. Analysts have pointed to this rift as a growing risk factor for tech manufacturers everywhere. Beyond securing fresh funding, CuspAI has also launched something bigger: the AI Materials Foundry. This initiative brings together more than 45 major industry players under one coalition, including tech giants like Nvidia, Samsung, Meta, and Hyundai Motor Group. The goal is to pool resources and expertise as the industry races to solve its materials bottleneck. With Bezos now backing the effort directly, CuspAI’s profile in the AI and semiconductor space is only expected to grow. As chip shortages continue to challenge manufacturers worldwide, the company’s approach of using AI to hunt for alternative materials could prove critical in keeping production on track.

Eala responded strongly in the second set and had taken a 2-1 lead when rain returned, forcing tournament officials to suspend play. Organisers later confirmed that the final would resume on Monday at 12:00 p.m. local time, with both players returning to complete the unfinished match. The weather also affected the men’s singles final in Washington. The championship clash between American Taylor Fritz and Spain’s Rafael Jodar was postponed and rescheduled for Monday, with organisers announcing that the match would begin no earlier than 1:00 p.m. local time after the completion of the women’s final. Tournament officials issued an update through social media, informing fans that all remaining matches scheduled for Sunday evening had been cancelled because of the adverse weather conditions.
