Sharif promises motorways, international airport f…

MIRPUR, Azad Jammu and Kashmir: Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) President and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif announced a series of major development promises for Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) while addressing a large public gathering in Mirpur. He said the PML-N would focus on improving infrastructure, healthcare, education and public transport if it returned to power in the region.

During his speech, Nawaz Sharif also made a light-hearted political remark directed at Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. He said Bilawal should not take his comments personally, adding that political rivalry should remain limited to healthy debate rather than conflict. Referring to the venue of the rally, he jokingly said Mirpur should not be confused with Kashmore or Mirpur Khas, stressing that it is Mirpur in Kashmir.

The former prime minister said Kashmir has always held a special place in his heart and described Azad Kashmir as his “first home” rather than a second home. He said he shared a strong emotional bond with the people of the region and had always worked for their welfare during his time in office.

Nawaz Sharif said Mirpur is one of the most beautiful cities in Azad Kashmir but added that its development had slowed after his government left power. He questioned what later governments had done for the people of Azad Kashmir and claimed that most major development projects in the region were initiated during the PML-N government.

He said he had come to Mirpur with a clear development agenda and a comprehensive manifesto for Azad Kashmir. According to him, every major project completed in Pakistan and AJK carries the stamp of the PML-N’s performance and commitment.

Speaking about future plans, Nawaz Sharif said education would remain the party’s highest priority. He stressed that young people must be provided with quality educational opportunities so they can contribute to the country’s progress.

He also announced plans to strengthen the healthcare system in Azad Kashmir. He said more specialised hospitals for cancer treatment and heart diseases should be established to ensure patients receive advanced medical care without travelling to distant cities.

Highlighting ongoing initiatives, Nawaz Sharif said Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had arranged to provide modern electric buses for the people of Azad Kashmir. He added that 10 mobile hospitals would also be sent to improve healthcare services, especially in remote and underserved areas.

The former prime minister promised that if the PML-N formed the government in Azad Kashmir, it would launch large-scale infrastructure projects. These include the construction of new motorways and an expressway linking Murree with Muzaffarabad to improve regional connectivity, boost tourism and support economic growth.

Nawaz Sharif also pledged to personally visit every part of Azad Kashmir if his party received the public’s mandate. He promised to expand natural gas facilities to homes across Mirpur, saying better public services were essential for improving the quality of life.

Kashmir is Pakistan’s jugular vein: Rana Qasim N…

Chairman of the Parliamentary Kashmir Committee and Federal Minister Rana Qasim Noon has said that Kashmir remains central to Pakistan’s national interests, stressing that the country has already fought wars to defend the region and will continue to stand by the Kashmiri people. Speaking about the current regional situation, Noon alleged that following India’s defeat in last year’s conflict, New Delhi has been attempting to create instability in Balochistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. He warned that Pakistan would not allow any external force to undermine its sovereignty or destabilize the country. Noon said Azad Kashmir is an integral part of Pakistan and asserted that no power in the world could separate it from the country. He also criticized attacks and abusive behavior directed at the military, police and other state institutions, saying that such conduct would not be tolerated in any country. The federal minister said the government has previously responded to public demands by providing relief and would continue to address genuine concerns in the future. However, he firmly rejected calls to withdraw the voting rights and political representation of refugees from Indian-administered Kashmir living in Pakistan. According to Noon, removing the political rights of Kashmiri refugees would amount to betraying the sacrifices made by the Kashmiri people over decades. He maintained that refugees from occupied Kashmir must retain their right to vote and participate in the political process. The Kashmir Committee chairman also drew attention to the ongoing situation in Indian-administered Kashmir, alleging that Indian authorities continue to suppress the Kashmiri population. He said several Kashmiri leaders have remained imprisoned for decades, with some spending between 30 and 40 years behind bars. Noon further accused India of altering the demographic landscape of occupied Kashmir by issuing what he described as fraudulent domiciles to Indian citizens and facilitating their settlement in the region. He argued that those advocating the removal of refugees’ voting rights were, knowingly or unknowingly, supporting an agenda that serves India’s interests. He vowed that such efforts would not succeed and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to supporting the political and democratic rights of Kashmiri refugees. The minister called for unity on the Kashmir issue and said Pakistan would continue to raise its voice for the rights of the people of Kashmir at national and international forums.

PM seeks broader JICA partnership in skills, miner…

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday called for expanding Pakistan’s cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), identifying skills development, mineral exploration and support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as key areas for future collaboration. The prime minister made the remarks during a meeting in Islamabad with a nine-member JICA delegation led by its President, Dr Tanaka Akihiko. He said Pakistan deeply values its decades-long partnership with Japan and expressed confidence that the latest engagement would further strengthen bilateral development ties. Highlighting the government’s economic agenda, Shehbaz said Pakistan had emerged from a challenging economic period through coordinated reforms and was now focused on achieving sustainable and inclusive growth. He noted that fiscal reforms had significantly improved revenue collection over the past three years, creating greater capacity for national development. The premier stressed that equipping young people with modern skills, expanding technical and vocational education, creating employment opportunities and empowering women remain among the government’s highest priorities. He said Pakistan is keen to benefit from JICA’s expertise in these sectors. Shehbaz also identified the country’s vast mineral resources as a major area of economic potential and invited JICA to provide technical assistance to help develop the sector and attract greater investment. Discussing support for businesses, the prime minister said reforms at the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) had strengthened the institution. He expressed hope that enhanced cooperation with JICA would help improve SME productivity, encourage entrepreneurship and boost Pakistan’s exports. During the meeting, Shehbaz also conveyed condolences over the recent earthquake in Japan. Dr Tanaka thanked the prime minister for his message of sympathy and appreciated the warm hospitality extended to the Japanese delegation during its visit. The JICA president reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Pakistan in healthcare, education, urban and rural development, industrial growth and technical training. He said future projects would be designed in line with the development priorities of both the federal and provincial governments. Dr Tanaka also acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts to promote peace and stability in the Middle East. Separately, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Cheema met the JICA delegation to discuss future development initiatives. He invited the agency to participate in financing the Main Line-1 (ML-1) railway project alongside the Asian Development Bank and other development partners, describing the railway upgrade as vital for improving trade, transportation and industrial connectivity across the country. Cheema also sought JICA’s support for expanding internet connectivity in rural areas to promote freelancing and digital commerce. He requested technical assistance for feasibility studies of major infrastructure projects, an area in which JICA expressed readiness to cooperate.

FIFA turmoil deepens as senior official Lamour exits

FIFA’s internal tensions have deepened after senior executive Kevin Lamour left the organisation, weeks after publicly criticising President Gianni Infantino’s controversial plan to sell part of the governing body’s commercial rights. FIFA confirmed on Monday that Lamour’s working relationship with the organisation had ended on August 17, bringing an abrupt close to the tenure of a senior official who had once been part of Infantino’s inner circle. “FIFA can confirm that the working relationship between FIFA and Kevin Lamour as FIFA’s Chief Operating Officer has ended,” a FIFA spokesperson said. The organisation thanked Lamour for his service but offered no further explanation. Lamour joined FIFA’s senior leadership team in November 2024. He had previously supported Infantino’s campaign for the FIFA presidency in 2016. His departure comes after he openly attacked a proposal to create a commercial subsidiary worth around $20 billion and sell as much as a 20% stake to private equity investors. The plan was designed to raise an estimated $4.2 billion. Lamour criticised the proposal last month, saying FIFA employees had been “deceived” about the plan and describing it as “the project of one person”. He also questioned whether FIFA’s leadership was putting personal interests ahead of football’s wider interests. The controversy intensified after Carlos Cordeiro, a senior adviser to Infantino, resigned in protest and described the proposed deal as a bad arrangement for football. Infantino subsequently withdrew the proposal. However, the backlash has continued and has increasingly raised questions about Infantino’s bid for a fourth term as FIFA president. Infantino’s Reelection Faces Growing Opposition Infantino’s reelection, once widely regarded as almost certain, now faces a stronger challenge. UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF have all expressed concerns and recently called for an independent review of Infantino’s conduct. At the same time, several national football associations have questioned whether they should support another term. The Scottish Football Association has already said it will not back Infantino in next year’s election. The dispute has also moved into FIFA’s governance structures. Human rights organisation FairSquare has asked FIFA’s Governance, Audit and Compliance Committee to rule Infantino ineligible for another presidential term, arguing that FIFA’s rules limit presidents to three terms. Infantino, however, has maintained that his initial period in office from 2016 to 2019 should not count because he completed an interrupted mandate following the resignation of former president Sepp Blatter. He was elected in 2016 and subsequently won uncontested elections in 2019 and 2023. FairSquare director Nicholas McGeehan said the organisation’s complaint presented evidence of what he described as a breach of FIFA’s rules. Former FIFA Governance and Review Committee head Miguel Maduro also backed the complaint, arguing that term limits were a central part of reforms introduced to prevent excessive concentration of power. The dispute now places FIFA under increasing scrutiny ahead of next year’s presidential election. While Infantino retains support from the African and South American confederations, opposition from influential football bodies in Europe, Asia and North and Central America could make his path to another term considerably more difficult. With Lamour’s departure adding to the controversy surrounding FIFA’s leadership, pressure on Infantino is likely to remain intense as football’s governing body approaches a crucial election year.
