Thailand Shuts Over 7,000 Cannabis Shops Amid Regulatory Overhaul

BANGKOK – Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health has confirmed the closure of more than 7,000 cannabis shops following a sharp decline in license renewals under a newly implemented regulatory framework. As of January 5, 2025, Cabinet-approved regulations have introduced stricter controls over the cannabis industry, resulting in widespread closures across the country.

New Thai Law Mandates Cannabis Shops Convert to Full Clinics

Previously governed by rules established in 2016, the industry is now subject to comprehensive changes designed to enhance oversight of cannabis sales, exports, and processing. Public Health Minister Pattana Promphat emphasized that updated regulations are necessary to address the evolving cannabis landscape and to strengthen consumer protection. Under the new rules, sellers may only operate from legally designated facilities, and only authorized medical personnel are permitted to prescribe and dispense cannabis.

Existing cannabis shops with valid licenses are allowed to continue operating until their permits expire. However, all new applications and renewals submitted after the regulations took effect must comply with the stricter criteria.

Ministry data reveals that while 18,433 cannabis establishments were registered as of December 2025, only 1,339 shops renewed their licenses, leading to the shuttering of over 7,000 outlets. Looking ahead, the ministry anticipates that 4,587 licenses will expire in 2026 and another 5,210 in 2027.

The updated regulations restrict eligible business premises to specific facility types, such as medical and herbal establishments, and impose stricter standards for storage and staffing. License holders must own or legally occupy the property where their business operates, and cannabis products must be stored in controlled environments that regulate temperature, humidity, and sunlight exposure.

Thailand to Review Cannabis Regulations Amid Industry Pressure

Additionally, all personnel involved in the sale or handling of cannabis must complete training certified by the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine to ensure compliance with safety protocols. While existing licenses remain valid until their natural expiration, all future applications will be subject to the tightened regulatory criteria.

KP CM launches mobilisation campaign for September…

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi has launched a province-wide street mobilisation campaign from Khyber district ahead of the September 27 long march. Addressing a rally in Khyber, Afridi said the campaign had formally begun from the historic Bab-e-Khyber and would continue across the country before culminating in Islamabad. The movement has been given the name “Long March Bil-Qist — A Long March for Justice.” According to the chief minister, its stated objectives include seeking the release of PTI founder Imran Khan through constitutional and peaceful means, demanding equal application of the law and calling for accountability for those responsible for alleged injustice and oppression. Afridi urged young people across Pakistan to participate in the September 27 march, saying the youth had an important role in determining the country’s political future. He said the mobilisation launched in Khyber would gradually be expanded to other parts of the country and continue until the movement achieved its declared objectives. The chief minister praised residents of Khyber for their participation in the campaign. He said rally participants had travelled around 30 kilometres while demonstrating enthusiasm and commitment to the movement. Afridi claimed that preparations were under way to mobilise two million people for the September 27 march. He said more than 100,000 participants from Khyber district alone were expected to join the Islamabad-bound movement. He also claimed that membership of the campaign seeking Imran Khan’s release had reached 520,000, with Punjab currently having the largest number of members. The chief minister expressed confidence that large numbers of people from different parts of Pakistan would participate in the march. Speaking about the role of young people, Afridi said frustration with the existing political and governance system was growing among the younger generation. He called on the youth to remain determined despite political and other challenges. He argued that if young people demonstrated their strength and determination collectively, the movement could become a major political force. Afridi also criticised those he accused of contributing to Imran Khan’s imprisonment, weakening democratic institutions and affecting the country’s governance system. He maintained that the movement would remain peaceful and constitutional while pursuing its political demands. The chief minister described September 27 as a potentially significant day for Pakistan, saying participants would seek to influence the country’s political direction and play a role in determining its future.

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari has expressed confidence that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) will emerge victorious in the second phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections. In a statement, Azma Bukhari said political opponents alleging electoral rigging would continue to make such claims, but the people would keep placing their trust in the PML-N through the democratic process. She maintained that the party’s candidates were expected to secure victories with comfortable margins. The minister said polling during the second phase of the AJK elections was conducted in a peaceful atmosphere, with voters actively participating and exercising their democratic right across the constituencies. Azma Bukhari claimed that many voters were supporting the PML-N because they appreciated the performance of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. She said the provincial government’s development initiatives had strengthened public confidence in the party and encouraged voters to support its candidates. Criticising the opposition, she said parties raising allegations about the electoral process had failed to gain significant public support. According to her, such criticism did not reflect the overall mood of the electorate. Bilawal hits back at Nawaz: Kashmiris ‘ not rea…

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Sunday delivered a sharp riposte to PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif, declaring that the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) are “not ready to bargain away their rights”  whether in Kashmir or Mirpur . The exchange comes a day before the first phase of elections in AJK, with Mirpur set to vote on Monday, and amid allegations of pre-poll rigging by the PPP after the PML-N gifted 10 e-buses to Muzaffarabad . In a recent campaign speech, Nawaz had invoked Bilawal by name, stating that Kashmir should not be mistaken for Kashmir, nor Mirpur for Mirpurkhas the districts of Sindh where the PPP has been in power for years . Responding via a video statement on social media, Bilawal began with a pointed, “Mian sahib, please don’t take offence,” while tagging Nawaz’s X account . “Whether it’s Kashmir or Kashmir, Mirpur or Mirpurkhas, not only do their names resemble each other; their temperament matches too, their honour matches too, and so does the courage to stand up for their rights,” Bilawal said . The PPP chairman emphasized that neither Kashmiris nor the people of Mirpurkhas would allow anyone to “rob them politically of their right to governance and right to ownership.” He reiterated his commitment to securing for the people of Kashmir the rights to governance, ownership, and employment “the same rights that every Pakistani citizen is entitled to.” Bilawal added that if these fundamental rights were ensured, “they won’t need gifts of this sort. They will arrange their own development,” a clear reference to the PML-N’s e-bus initiative . Urging his supporters to turn out in large numbers on polling day, Bilawal concluded with a defiant slogan: “Progress too! Authority too! Employment too! And Kashmir’s decision by Kashmiris!” The war of words underscores the high political stakes in the AJK elections, with both major parties locked in a fierce contest for control of the region .

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has alleged that an entire network involved in spreading misleading propaganda and disinformation against Pakistan and Pakistani agencies has links to India. Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, the minister said most of the content being circulated was related to the banned Action Committee in Kashmir. Tarar claimed that evidence of Indian funding for elements associated with the banned Action Committee was now in the public domain. He said numerous Indian social media accounts had emerged with evidence linking them to the campaign. According to the minister, posts shared through these accounts were aimed at provoking people against the state. The information minister said the government would continue defending Pakistan’s national interests on every front.
