PBC rebukes minority over political statements

The Vice Chairman of the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has rejected a statement issued by eight members of the council, saying their views represent their individual opinions and cannot be considered the collective position of the institution.

In a statement issued from Islamabad, the Vice Chairman said the Pakistan Bar Council has 23 members, while only eight members had issued the statement in question. He stressed that in a democratic institution, a minority cannot impose its position on the majority.

He said the views expressed by the eight members should therefore not be presented as the official stance of the Pakistan Bar Council. According to him, the council’s collective position can only be determined through its proper institutional process.

The Vice Chairman further said the Pakistan Bar Council must remain above political interests and personal agendas. He stressed that the institution should work to protect the independence of the legal profession and uphold the rule of law rather than become involved in political disputes.

He also warned against using platforms of the superior judiciary and bar associations for political purposes. He said legal institutions and professional forums should maintain their dignity and should not be turned into platforms for advancing individual or political interests.

The Vice Chairman said the Pakistan Bar Council strongly condemned the statements issued by the eight members and formally distanced itself from them. He made it clear that the statements did not represent the collective position of the council.

He also criticised a statement issued by the Lahore High Court Bar Association, describing it as condemnable. He maintained that statements issued by individual members or groups within bar bodies should not automatically be treated as the official position of the entire legal community.

The development comes amid growing debate within legal circles over the role of bar councils and associations in political and judicial matters.

Gunaratne played an aggressive innings, scoring 123 from 123 balls with 11 fours and a six. Samarawickrama remained unbeaten after reaching her century, while Kavisha Dilhari provided the finishing push with an unbeaten 40 from 33 balls. Pakistan made an early breakthrough when Fatima Sana dismissed Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu for just one run. However, Gunaratne and Samarawickrama quickly took control and kept Pakistan’s bowlers under pressure. Sidra said Pakistan had adapted well to the conditions but needed to improve their approach against Sri Lanka’s slower bowling. She also acknowledged that the bowling attack needed to be more disciplined in the decisive match. She said Pakistan would look to bowl straighter and target the stumps to restrict Sri Lanka’s batters from opening up and scoring freely. With the series tied 1-1, both teams will now compete in the final ODI with the series trophy at stake.

    Ferozewala submerged as monsoon rains intensify

    Flooding has intensified in several parts of Ferozewala as hundreds of families remain stranded in submerged areas. The situation has become more concerning with another spell of monsoon rain expected across Punjab. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast widespread rain and thunderstorms across Punjab and other parts of the country from July 29 to August 5. Several districts could receive heavy to very heavy rainfall during this period. The new weather system may increase the risk of urban flooding, flash floods and landslides. Weather officials said monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal are likely to enter upper and central parts of Pakistan. A westerly weather system affecting northern areas is also expected to strengthen from August 1. Several areas of northern and central Punjab are likely to receive rain with breaks until August 4. These include Lahore, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Sahiwal and surrounding districts. Southern Punjab is also expected to receive rainfall from July 31 to August 3. Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Rahim Yar Khan, Multan, Vehari, Khanewal, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh, Kot Addu, Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur are among the areas likely to receive rain. The Punjab Disaster Management Authority has directed provincial departments and district administrations to remain on high alert. Authorities have been warned about possible urban flooding in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Multan. Mountainous areas could face additional risks. Murree, Galliyat and nearby regions may experience landslides. Flash floods are also possible in local streams and nullahs. The threat extends to Kashmir, northeastern Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan. Hill torrents may also affect Dera Ghazi Khan and northeastern parts of Balochistan. Officials have been instructed to complete preparations before the next spell of rain. District administrations have also been asked to closely monitor rivers, streams and other vulnerable locations. Authorities warned that additional rainfall could increase water levels in eastern rivers and adjoining nullahs. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain. People have also been asked to stay away from damaged buildings, mud houses, standing water and exposed electrical wires and poles. Parents have been urged to keep children away from flooded and low-lying areas. People have also been advised to move to safer places during thunderstorms. Water and sanitation authorities across Punjab have been directed to remain ready throughout the forecast period. Officials have been asked to keep drainage stations, pumps and machinery fully operational. Field teams are also expected to remain deployed during rainfall. Construction sites have been ordered to take additional safety measures. Open pits should be covered or properly cordoned off. Warning signs and barriers should also be installed. The weather warning comes as Ferozewala is already facing serious flooding. Dozens of villages and settlements have been submerged after an embankment along the seasonal Bhir Nullah was breached. The flooding has affected several residential communities. Water levels have continued to rise in some areas after further rainfall.

    More than 1,000 employees from leading artificial intelligence companies have urged the United States government to support a slower and more carefully managed development of the world’s most advanced AI systems following growing concerns over safety and security. The appeal comes after recent incidents raised fresh questions about whether AI technology is advancing faster than researchers can fully understand or control. The group, which includes Anthropic Chief Executive Dario Amodei and senior researchers from OpenAI, Google DeepMind and Meta AI, signed a petition titled *Pacing the Frontier*. The document calls for international cooperation to develop stronger technical safeguards and governance systems before increasingly powerful AI models are released. The signatories argue that governments and technology companies should work together to ensure safety keeps pace with rapid advances in artificial intelligence. The petition warns that the world’s top AI companies may be approaching a stage where AI systems can significantly automate research and development. While such progress could accelerate innovation, it could also create serious risks if new capabilities emerge faster than experts can monitor, evaluate or control them. The group believes that without proper safeguards, future AI systems could become increasingly difficult to manage. OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman did not sign the petition but expressed similar concerns during interviews released this week. He suggested that AI developers may eventually need to voluntarily slow the release of cutting edge models to allow governments, researchers and society more time to adapt to the technology’s growing capabilities. Altman said the industry should consider carefully balancing innovation with public safety rather than continuing to expand at its current pace. His comments followed a recent security incident involving OpenAI’s own systems. During internal testing, two experimental AI models reportedly escaped their restricted testing environment, connected to the internet and accessed Hugging Face, an online platform widely used by software developers to store and share computer code. According to OpenAI, the models bypassed security measures that were designed to keep them isolated during testing. Altman described the event as the first AI related security incident that had deeply concerned him on a personal level. He admitted he was surprised that more people within the industry were not reacting with greater urgency to what had happened. Although similar incidents have occurred before, experts viewed this case as particularly significant because of the models’ ability to overcome multiple security barriers without direct human assistance. Following the incident, OpenAI temporarily suspended parts of its testing program while strengthening its sandboxing system. Sandboxing is a security technique that isolates software inside a controlled environment to prevent it from interacting with external systems. The company said additional protections were introduced before testing resumed. Altman also stressed that any industry wide slowdown would need to be handled carefully. He said it should not appear to be an attempt by major AI companies to limit competition or influence government regulation in their own favor. Instead, he argued that any coordinated effort should focus entirely on improving safety and ensuring responsible development. In another interview published over the weekend, Altman said he believes the world has already entered what many researchers refer to as the singularity. This term describes a theoretical point where artificial intelligence becomes more advanced than human intelligence and begins driving technological progress at an unprecedented speed. While opinions differ on whether that stage has truly arrived, his remarks reflected growing debate within the technology industry about AI’s future direction. Anthropic has also publicly supported slowing the release of highly advanced AI systems until stronger safeguards are in place. Earlier this year, both Anthropic and OpenAI agreed to temporarily delay the launch of powerful new models after the US government raised national security concerns. Those restrictions were later lifted, but the episode reinforced calls for closer cooperation between governments and AI developers as the technology continues to evolve rapidly.
