PBC rebukes minority over political statements

The Vice Chairman of the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has rejected a statement issued by eight members of the council, saying their views represent their individual opinions and cannot be considered the collective position of the institution.

In a statement issued from Islamabad, the Vice Chairman said the Pakistan Bar Council has 23 members, while only eight members had issued the statement in question. He stressed that in a democratic institution, a minority cannot impose its position on the majority.

He said the views expressed by the eight members should therefore not be presented as the official stance of the Pakistan Bar Council. According to him, the council’s collective position can only be determined through its proper institutional process.

The Vice Chairman further said the Pakistan Bar Council must remain above political interests and personal agendas. He stressed that the institution should work to protect the independence of the legal profession and uphold the rule of law rather than become involved in political disputes.

He also warned against using platforms of the superior judiciary and bar associations for political purposes. He said legal institutions and professional forums should maintain their dignity and should not be turned into platforms for advancing individual or political interests.

The Vice Chairman said the Pakistan Bar Council strongly condemned the statements issued by the eight members and formally distanced itself from them. He made it clear that the statements did not represent the collective position of the council.

He also criticised a statement issued by the Lahore High Court Bar Association, describing it as condemnable. He maintained that statements issued by individual members or groups within bar bodies should not automatically be treated as the official position of the entire legal community.

The development comes amid growing debate within legal circles over the role of bar councils and associations in political and judicial matters.

    Goods transporters have announced a 40-day postponement of their nationwide strike following talks with government representatives in Karachi. The negotiations were held at the Governor House in Karachi. Sindh Governor Nihal Hashmi, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan and All Pakistan Goods Transporters Association President Malik Shahzad attended the meeting. Speaking at a press conference after the talks, Malik Shahzad said transporters had decided to postpone the strike after receiving assurances from the government. He said the transporters had been on a nationwide strike for the past nine days. According to him, the Sindh government assured them that the parking issue would be addressed. Shahzad said the government had also sought 15 days to review the mechanism for determining petroleum prices. The issue of whether fuel prices should be revised every 15 days or once a month would be examined, he added. He said Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan had assured the transporters that a committee would be formed to review toll taxes and consider reducing the charges. The transporters were also assured that 10-wheeler vehicles would be allowed to carry an appropriate weight, Shahzad said. He added that the federal and provincial governments had already resolved some of their concerns. Other issues require decisions at the cabinet level, he said. Shahzad said meetings of the relevant committees would continue. He expressed hope that the government would fulfil its commitments. He clarified that the transporters were not ending their strike permanently. Instead, they were postponing it for 40 days. He warned that the transporters could resume protests if the government failed to implement the assurances given during the negotiations. Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan said the government had addressed the transporters’ issues that could be resolved immediately. He said some demands required formal procedures, which the government would complete. Several committees had been formed to work on the remaining issues, he added. Aleem Khan also criticised the condition of the Karachi-Hyderabad road. He said the existing road could not properly be described as a motorway. He announced that work on a new motorway from Sukkur to Hyderabad and onward to Karachi would begin this year. The minister said the government wanted to avoid decisions that could create unnecessary disputes. Sindh Governor Nihal Hashmi said the regional situation was currently unusual and had significant economic implications. He said the economic effects of conflicts were being felt not only in Pakistan but across the world. He added that the prime minister and the field marshal were making efforts to ensure that the impact on the public remained manageable. Hashmi said the government and transporters had listened to each other during the negotiations. Both sides, he added, agreed that they were prepared to make sacrifices for the country. Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said the authorities had spent the entire day trying to resolve the issues raised by transporters. He said the Sindh government would take action on matters falling under its jurisdiction. Wahab stressed that the authorities wanted to resolve disputes through dialogue rather than confrontation.

    Unofficial and preliminary results from the first phase of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections have started to emerge, with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) locked in a close contest across several constituencies. The first phase covered 13 constituencies in Mirpur Division, including the districts of Mirpur, Kotli and Bhimber. Vote counting began after polling ended. The preliminary results from the constituencies are as follows: LA-1 Mirpur-I: Results from 17 of the 139 polling stations have been received. PML-N candidate Azhar Sadiq is leading with 1,692 votes. PPP candidate Muhammad Afsar Shahid is in second place with 1,482 votes. LA-2 Mirpur-II: Results from 34 of 149 polling stations have been reported. PPP candidate Qasim Majeed is ahead with 3,103 votes. PML-N’s Azeem Bakhsh Chaudhry has secured 2,409 votes and is in second place. LA-13 Kotli-VI: Results from 67 of 193 polling stations show PML-N candidate Raja Ayaz Ahmed Khan leading with 10,389 votes. PPP candidate Muhammad Waleed Inqalabi is second with 8,785 votes. The results remain unofficial and could change as counting continues and results from the remaining polling stations are received. Claims of disruption in Bhimber PPP AJK Election Cell in-charge Sardar Abdul Shakoor claimed that disturbances took place at polling stations 119, 120 and 121 in LA-5 Barnala. He said the disruption affected the polling process. According to Shakoor, voting resumed after security forces reached the area. However, he said polling remained slow afterward. Raja Pervez Ashraf calls for action PPP leader Raja Pervez Ashraf expressed concern over alleged irregularities in several constituencies. He called for additional security personnel at sensitive polling stations, including locations in Gulpur, Thurochi and Muhajir Camp. Ashraf urged the Election Commission to take immediate and impartial notice of all complaints. He also called for steps to ensure that the elections remain free, transparent and fair. Police say polling remained peaceful The spokesperson for the AJK inspector general of police said polling in the first phase across Mirpur Division remained peaceful. The spokesperson said residents had rejected a call for a long march by a banned committee. Instead, voters chose to exercise their democratic right. Voters began arriving at polling stations soon after voting opened at 8am. AJK Inspector General of Police Liaquat Ali Malik thanked residents for cooperating with authorities and helping maintain peace during the electoral process. He warned that no one, including political workers, would be allowed to take the law into their own hands.
