The disappearance of Balochi Language

Written by Abdul QadirAbabakar

The disappearance of the Balochi language is a pressing concern that warrants immediate attention. Languages play a pivotal role in shaping a nation’s identity, culture, and heritage. Without languages, nations cannot be considered developed, as they lack a fundamental aspect of their existence.

Balochi, the mother language of the Baloch people, is an integral part of their identity and a vital component of their cultural heritage. It’s disheartening to note that Balochi is among the 81% of the world’s 7,000 languages that are at risk of extinction. The main reason behind this alarming trend is that native individuals aren’t prioritizing learning, writing, and reading in Balochi, leading to its decline.

The onus is on the new generation and institutions to promote and preserve the Balochi language. Without it, the Baloch people will be left without a distinct identity, culture, and heritage. It’s imperative that institutions take concrete steps to support the Balochi language, such as opening classes and offering courses to boost its usage.

Unfortunately, some clubs and bookshops are making resources expensive, hindering efforts to preserve the language. This is a significant obstacle, as it limits access to resources and creates a barrier for those who want to learn and promote Balochi.

I urge authorities to take immediate action to address this issue. Making resources accessible and affordable is crucial to promoting the Balochi language. Institutions should prioritize opening Balochi classes, offering courses, and providing resources to support language learners. This will not only help preserve the language but also promote cultural heritage and identity. Institutions offering Balochi language courses and degree programs. Government support for Balochi language development and promotion.c ommunity-led initiatives to promote Balochi language and culture and affordable resources and materials for language learners. Encouraging native speakers to use Balochi in daily life and pass it on to future generations

The preservation of the Balochi language requires a collective effort. It’s time for institutions, authorities, and the community to come together to promote and preserve this vital aspect of Baloch culture and identity.

European colonization brought smallpox to the Americas

Historians have believed that the collapse of Indigenous populations across the Americas was triggered largely by smallpox. The historical manuscripts and missionary chronicles provided detailed eyewitness reports of these devastating outbreaks. Molecular proof links colonial-era American epidemics directly to Old World viral strains remained elusive. Now, a study published in the journal Science provides the definitive genetic confirmation researchers have sought for generations. It’s led by geneticists at Trinity College Dublin in collaboration with biological anthropologists at the Universidad de Chile. Researchers have successfully extracted and sequenced the oldest known smallpox viral genomes ever recovered in the Americas. The ancient viral DNA was retrieved from the naturally mummified remains of two individuals buried in northern Chile during the early Spanish colonial era. The viral samples were recovered from bone fragments belonging to an adult woman (aged 30 to 35) and a young man (aged 18 to 20) buried near Camarones Cove. A coastal site in northern Chile that once marked the southern reaches of the Inca Empire. The individuals had been naturally preserved by the hyper-arid climate. They’re wrapped in camelid wool blankets and interred in traditional cloth bundles. Scientists initially analyzed DNA from 13 individuals excavated at the site. They were searching for ancient bacterial infections such as tuberculosis. Instead, they discovered preserved traces of the variola virus. Guess what? It’s the deadly pathogen responsible for smallpox. Radiocarbon analysis alongside molecular clock estimates revealed that both individuals died between 1492 and 1631 CE. The violent era of Spanish conquest led by conquistadors like Francisco Pizarro. Because the two viral genomes recovered from the mummies were virtually identical, geneticists concluded that both individuals likely succumbed to the same localized outbreak or were infected by the same circulating viral strain.  Evolutionary Trajectory of a Global Killer When researchers mapped the newly recovered genetic sequences onto a global evolutionary tree of smallpox, the results were unequivocal. The Chilean viral strain positioned directly between medieval European strains. The strains included those previously recovered from Viking-era human remains and later 17th- to 19th-century strains circulating in Europe. This placement provides molecular evidence that the virus was introduced to Indigenous American communities from the Old World. The study yielded surprising insights into how pathogens evolve when introduced to vulnerable host populations. The variola virus originally evolved from a animal-host (zoonotic) pathogen. It was undergoing extensive genetic alteration up through the 16th century as it adapted to human hosts. Surprisingly, the virus’s rate of genetic change slowed dramatically during the peak colonial expansion of the 17th and 18th centuries. Researchers hypothesize that Indigenous populations lacked any pre-existing immunity. So, the virus had reached an evolutionary optimum. It could spread effortlessly without needing further genetic adaptation. The virus’s evolution accelerated once again in the late 18th and 19th centuries. It was after the introduction of Edward Jenner’s smallpox vaccine in 1796. Therefore, the evolutionary pressure forced the pathogen to adapt once more. Why This Discovery Matters Today Smallpox stands as one of the deadliest infectious diseases in human history. It has claimed hundreds of millions of lives over millennia before its official eradication in 1980 through global vaccination efforts. In the Americas, the disease inflicted physical casualties. The virus also shattered social structures and morale. The rapid disfigurement and death led communities to feel overwhelmed by forces they could neither treat nor comprehend. This discovery demonstrates the immense power of ancient DNA research. Tracing how pathogen evolution interacts with human migration, population immunity, and public health interventions provides critical context for understanding modern infectious disease threats today.

  • Why Safe Migration Begins with Information

By Tahseen Ullah  Imagine a young Pakistani sitting in a village in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa or Sindh, scrolling through his phone. He sees an attractive job offer for Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia, the UAE—or even an IT position in Southeast Asia. The salary is impressive, accommodation is promised and the visa will supposedly be arranged within weeks. A WhatsApp number is provided, and someone in his community has already shared the opportunity. He has ambition, perhaps a degree or technical skills. What he may not have is reliable information. This information gap can turn an aspiration for overseas employment into financial loss, irregular migration, exploitation, human smuggling or even trafficking. For Pakistan, this is an increasingly important challenge. Overseas employment is a lifeline for millions of Pakistani families, supporting children’s education, access to healthcare, improved living standards and household economic security, while remittances make a vital contribution to the national economy. At the same time, rapidly changing global labour markets are creating new opportunities beyond traditional destinations. Yet, as these opportunities grow, so do the risks of fraudulent recruitment, misinformation, disinformation, human smuggling and trafficking. Ensuring that Pakistanis can access authentic and accurate information, guidance, verify employment opportunities and make informed decisions is therefore essential to turning migration aspirations into safe and dignified and productive employment opportunities. A fake job advertisement, misleading social media post or fraudulent agent can create a false impression of employment and migration opportunities. Misinformation may be shared unknowingly, while disinformation is deliberately designed to deceive. For prospective migrants, however, the consequences can be equally serious. The risks are particularly concerning for young, educated, and IT skilled Pakistanis. In parts of Southeast Asia, deceptive job advertisements and promises of visit visas that are later claimed to be convertible into work visas have reportedly been used to lure individuals into situations involving human trafficking for forced criminality, where victims may be coerced into participating in online scams and other criminal activities. What initially appears to be a lucrative employment opportunity can therefore become a pathway to exploitation, coercion and serious harm. In the migration journey, information is not just knowledge, it is protection. Before accepting any overseas opportunity, prospective migrants should ask: Is the employer genuine? Is the recruiter authorised? Is the visa appropriate for the job? Is there a written employment contract? Are the salary and working conditions clear? What are the actual costs? Most importantly, where can this information be verified? The principle should be simple: check before you trust, verify before you pay and consult before you travel. To make an informed decision, prospective and intending migrants should first verify job offers and recruitment arrangements from the Bureau of Emigration & Overseas Employment and its field offices, the Protectorates of Emigrants, while seeking information, guidance and referral from Government departments, Migrant Resource Centres (MRCs) Pakistan and other recognised migration information and counselling services before paying, signing or travelling. These sources can help migrants understand legal/ regular migration pathways, recruitment procedures, employment contracts, workers’ rights and available complaint mechanisms. Before making a migration decision, understand the process and seek guidance. Consult relevant sources before paying an agent, signing documents or travelling—a few minutes of verification can prevent years of financial and personal consequences. However, information alone is not enough. Safe migration also requires quality skills, reskilling and upskilling. International labour markets increasingly demand technical competencies, language skills, digital literacy and recognised qualifications. TVET institutions and universities should therefore align training with genuine labour-market demand and equip young people with both occupational and migration-related knowledge. A skilled worker who cannot identify a fraudulent opportunity remains vulnerable. Conversely, reliable information without relevant skills can leave genuine opportunities beyond reach. Skills and information must therefore go together. A comprehensive approach to migration must move beyond simply facilitating departure. Safe migration requires informed preparation before departure, protection during employment and support upon return, supported by strong coordination among government institutions, international organization, civil society organizations, Pakistani missions abroad, bilateral agreements with destination countries, training providers, employers, recruiters, universities, and migration information and counselling services. The message to young Pakistanis should be clear: Do not migrate on the basis of a social media post, WhatsApp message or an agent’s promise. Seek information, consult the relevant authorities, verify the opportunity, acquire the required skills and follow the legal and regular migration pathway. Migration should be a pathway to opportunity—not a pathway to exploitation. In today’s information environment, knowing where to seek information, whom to consult and what to verify before migration may be as important as the skills required for the job itself. Safe migration begins long before the airport. It begins with an informed decision. Why marginalia is devised for conversation

For centuries, books were treated as sacred, untouchable artifacts. Readers were taught to open a spine with reverence, turn pages by the edges, and never, under any circumstance, mark the paper. But in the modern reading culture, a quiet revolution has taken root: marginalia is no longer viewed as defacement. Today, it is recognized as a vital form of active intellectual engagement. Marking up a book transforms reading from a passive act of consumption into an active. Reading is a two-way dialogue between the reader and the writer. When you read with a pencil, pen, or sticky tab in hand, your relationship with the text fundamentally shifts. You cease to be a distant spectator observing someone else’s thoughts. In other words, you become a collaborator. Underlining a sentence, drawing an exclamation point next to a surprising plot twist, or a counterargument in the margin forces your brain to process language at a deeper level. It requires you to articulate why a passage resonated or failed. Furthermore, annotated books serve as personal time capsules. When you reopen a novel you marked up five or ten years ago, it offers an unfiltered reflection into who you were at that exact moment in your life. You might find yourself cringing at an old marginal note. Then you agree passionately with a circled phrase, or realizing that a passage you completely ignored years ago now carries personal meaning. The book becomes a physical record not just of the author’s story, but of your own cognitive and emotional evolution. Edgar Allan Poe once wrote: ‘In getting my books, I have been always solicitous of an ample margin … for the facility it affords me of pencilling suggested thoughts, agreements and differences of opinion …’ Practically speaking, marginalia also sharpens critical thinking. Students, scholars, and casual readers alike find that tracking themes through custom color-coded tabs or brief summary notes at the end of chapters drastically improves retention and comprehension. It prevents the common phenomenon of eye-scanning where your eyes move across sentences while your mind wanders elsewhere. Annotation demands presence. Ultimately, scribbling in the margins strips away the artificial pedestal we often place books upon. It reminds us that literature is not meant to sit pristine and untouched on a display shelf. Literature is meant to be wrestled with, questioned, celebrated, and lived in. The next time you open a book that challenges or moves you, don’t hold back. Pick up a pen, claim the empty white space on the page, and join a conversation that has been taking place across centuries.

    Post-graduate depression

No one talks about the depression, hopelessness, and anxiety that fresh university graduates face. They suffer silently, wondering what to do next and how to find opportunities. Even their families often don’t understand what they are going through. Many graduates slowly fade away. They stop talking to friends, lose contact with classmates, and avoid social gatherings. At family functions, relatives ask questions like, “Beta, what are you doing now?”, “How long are you going to stay at your parents’ home?” If it’s a girl, people ask, “When are you getting married?” or “What have you achieved after getting your degree? Have you earned any money? Look at our daughters—they’re married, have two kids, and are happy. Meanwhile, your poor parents are still taking care of you.” When it comes to boys, they face endless questions from uncles and relatives. Many become demotivated. Some dream of moving abroad but don’t have the money to do so. Others try trading after taking advice from friends and sometimes fail. Some start giving home tuition while constantly thinking about how to settle in life and repay their parents, who are getting older every day. This is the reality of our society. Those who can afford it pursue a master’s degree or go abroad for higher studies. Many work overtime just to prove that they are capable of achieving something in life. Otherwise, people label them as a burden on their parents. Many daughters are pressured into marriage instead of being allowed to pursue private jobs. If they want to build a career, they are expected to prepare for competitive government exams. Even after 14 or 16 years of education, they still have to study further to clear exams like CSS or PPSC. Only then do parents and society begin to appreciate them, and their names are respected. Otherwise, to society, you are just another university graduate—and that’s all.

  • Video games may improve memory

Video games are often seen as just a form of entertainment but a new scientific review suggests they may also benefit the brain. A research review covering 20 years found that people who play video games may perform better in some mental skills especially memory. Researchers examined the results of many previous studies to understand how video games affect the brain. Their goal was to find out whether gaming can improve thinking and learning abilities. The review found a small but statistically significant link between playing video games and better cognitive performance. The strongest improvement was seen in memory. People who played video games generally scored higher in memory-related tests than those who did not. Experts say this may be because many games require players to remember information follow different events make quick decisions and plan strategies. Repeating these tasks can act as a form of mental exercise that helps strengthen memory. Some games also require players to focus on several things at once keeping the brain active. The research also looked at other mental abilities including spatial skills visual attention cognitive control and intelligence. Gamers showed slightly better performance in these areas as well but the biggest and most consistent benefit was found in memory. Researchers noted that not all video games have the same effects. The studies included different types of games such as action games and brain training games as well as participants of different ages.  These differences may explain why the results were not exactly the same across all studies. The researchers also cautioned that it is still too early to say that video games can greatly improve all mental abilities in daily life. More long term studies are needed to understand how long these benefits last and how useful they are in everyday activities. Health experts say playing video games in moderation may support brain health but it should be combined with a balanced diet regular exercise enough sleep and healthy screen time habits. When enjoyed as part of a balanced lifestyle video games can offer both entertainment and potential mental benefits.
