MANILA, Philippines — On September 2, US actor, filmmaker and political activist George Clooney warned that advances in artificial intelligence were making it increasingly difficult to distinguish truth from fiction, posing a challenge for journalists, governments and the public.

Speaking at the Venice Film Festival, the two-time Oscar winner said deepfake technology and AI-generated content were undermining trust in information. Clooney linked the AI challenge to wider concerns about journalism, saying media ownership had become concentrated in the hands of a small number of wealthy individuals.

On September 3, Filipina tennis star rolled into the third round of the US Open following a masterful 6-1, 6-4 victory over Ukraine’s Oleksandra Oliynykova at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in Flushing Meadows, New York.

Eala faces gal pal Iva Jovic in the round of 32 — tentatively set on September 5, at 11 pm, Manila time — hoping victory will finally go her way this time after she lost to the 18-year-old American in their first two WTA Tour encounters.

Meanwhile, on September 2, former Department of Education chief of staff Michael Poa confirmed during the impeachment trial that while he prepared the DepEd’s response to the 2024 findings of the Commission on Audit (COA) on the agency’s confidential funds use, he was unaware that it was the security officer of Vice President and then-education secretary Sara Duterte who handled the funds.

    Afghanistan exports Black Dimension Stone to US

    Afghanistan has exported a shipment of its natural Black Dimension Stone to the United States for the first time, marking a significant step for the country’s mining and export sector. According to Afghan media reports, the shipment is valued at around $100,000. The export is being viewed as an important milestone in Afghanistan’s efforts to expand its presence in international mineral markets. The shipment was arranged by a private Afghan company. However, officials have not disclosed the name of the exporting company or the identity of the American buyer. The exported stone was extracted from a mine located in the Zindajan district of Herat province, an area known for its mineral resources. Zindajan lies approximately 40 kilometres west of Herat city, close to the border with Iran. Natural Black Dimension Stone is widely used in the construction and architectural industries for flooring, wall cladding, monuments and decorative projects because of its durability and polished appearance. The latest export highlights Afghanistan’s growing interest in developing its mining sector, which is considered one of the country’s most valuable economic resources. The country possesses significant deposits of marble, gemstones, precious metals and other industrial minerals that have the potential to boost exports and generate foreign exchange. Officials hope that increased international demand for Afghan minerals will encourage further investment in the mining industry and create new economic opportunities

    Texas governor targets Muslim airport facilities

    Texas Governor Greg Abbott has ordered a review of state grants provided to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), alleging that facilities for Muslim passengers to perform ablution and pray could amount to religious discrimination. Abbott’s office said the matter has also been referred to the US Department of Transportation for investigation and possible action. According to a statement from the governor’s office, state grants provided to entities operating airports in Texas will be reviewed to determine whether existing funding should be withdrawn or whether the airports should be denied future state funding. Abbott has argued that providing facilities specifically associated with one religion at government-owned facilities could raise concerns under religious discrimination laws. The governor’s office said DFW International Airport is planning to establish a dedicated ablution facility for Muslim passengers. At George Bush Intercontinental Airport, a similar facility has reportedly already been established, along with a designated space for prayer. Abbott has written to US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, asking the Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to immediately review the existing or proposed religious facilities at both airports. He has also called for corrective or legal action if federal authorities determine that any violations have occurred. The Texas governor maintains that both airports receive federal funding and are therefore required to comply with federal laws prohibiting discriminatory practices. In his statement, Abbott said the proposed ablution facilities appear to provide a special accommodation to a particular section of the population based on religion, which he considers potentially unlawful. He further argued that because the airports are publicly owned, government authorities cannot give preference to one religious viewpoint over others. Abbott reiterated his position on social media, saying that government facilities funded by taxpayers should not allow what he described as unlawful religious discrimination.

    Abu Dhabi offers free three-month visas to Indian tourists

    Abu Dhabi has introduced a special visa-fee waiver for eligible Indian tourists as part of efforts to boost tourism in the United Arab Emirates. Under the initiative, selected Indian travellers will receive a waiver of the full UAE entry visa fee. The offer is available from August 1 to October 31, 2026, during a pilot programme that will cover up to 20,000 eligible travellers. To qualify, Indian passport holders must book a travel package from India to Abu Dhabi. The package must include a stay of at least three consecutive nights at a hotel in Abu Dhabi and a return flight. The booking must also be made through a participating travel partner or an online travel agency. Travellers cannot apply for the free visa independently or directly. The visa-fee waiver will only be available to passengers who meet the specified conditions and book their trip through the designated travel channels. The three-month initiative is designed to attract more Indian visitors to Abu Dhabi and increase tourism activity during the late summer and early autumn period. Although the visa fee will be waived, travellers will generally remain responsible for the cost of flights, accommodation and other travel expenses, unless additional discounts are included in their selected package. The initiative is part of Abu Dhabi’s broader efforts to introduce attractive tourism offers and strengthen visitor numbers. The UAE has been seeking to support its tourism sector amid regional tensions and their impact on travel patterns. Authorities are introducing promotional packages and other incentives to maintain tourism activity and attract visitors from key international markets.

    AMMAN: Jordan’s Armed Forces announced on Thursday that its air defence systems successfully intercepted and destroyed five missiles launched from Iran before they could reach their intended targets within Jordanian airspace. In an official statement, the military said its air defence units detected the incoming missiles during the early hours of Thursday and neutralised them in line with the country’s pre-planned defensive strategy. Authorities confirmed that all five missiles were destroyed mid-air, preventing any casualties or damage to property. A military spokesperson said the armed forces remain on high alert and are fully prepared to safeguard Jordan’s airspace, protect civilians and respond effectively to any threat to the country’s national security. Jordanian officials did not disclose further technical details about the missiles or identify their intended targets. The reported interception comes amid rising tensions across the Middle East, where strained relations between Iran and the United States have heightened regional security concerns. Countries across the region have continued to strengthen their defence readiness in response to the evolving situation. Defence analysts have warned that any further exchange of missile attacks or military retaliation could have wider implications for stability and security throughout the Middle East.
