Three hours with Nawaz Sharif: reflections on a leader looking to the future

On Friday, I had the opportunity to spend nearly three hours with former Prime Minister and President of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, at his Jati Umra residence in Raiwind. We offered Jumma prayers together, shared lunch and held an extensive discussion on Pakistan’s political landscape. It was more than a courtesy meeting; it provided a rare opportunity to observe, first-hand, the thinking of a leader who remains deeply involved in shaping the direction of his party and closely following the country’s political developments.

The meeting came at a significant moment for the PML-N. Following the party’s recent success in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir elections, there is renewed confidence within its ranks. Nawaz Sharif appeared optimistic, composed and fully focused on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

What struck me first was his health and energy. Nawaz Sharif was in excellent spirits, displaying the confidence and composure of a politician who believes his party is firmly back on the front foot. There was no sense of retirement or political detachment. Instead, there was a clear focus on governance, organisation and preparing for the future.

The recent PML-N victory in the Azad Kashmir elections has undoubtedly reinforced that confidence. For the party, the result was more than just another electoral success; it was an affirmation that its political message continues to resonate with voters. Nawaz Sharif spoke with satisfaction about the outcome, viewing it as an important milestone in the party’s broader revival.

He was equally appreciative of the performance of the Punjab Government under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. In his view, the provincial administration has demonstrated that governance and public service remain the strongest political currency. Whether through infrastructure, public welfare initiatives or administrative reforms, he believes Punjab is once again becoming the party’s showcase of governance.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif also received praise during our conversation. Nawaz Sharif expressed confidence in his younger brother’s efforts to steer Pakistan towards economic stability, strengthen institutions and improve the country’s international standing during a challenging period. His remarks reflected a leadership that sees continuity and coordination within the party as one of its greatest strengths.

Perhaps the most significant observation from the meeting was Nawaz Sharif’s continued command of the PML-N. Despite years away from active frontline politics, he remains the party’s central strategic figure. Senior leaders continue to look towards him for direction, while party workers still regard him as the movement’s principal source of political inspiration.

Much has been written about Nawaz Sharif’s return to Pakistan and his re-emergence in national politics. Yet spending time with him offered a clearer picture than any public rally or television appearance could provide. He is not merely observing events from the sidelines; he is actively shaping the party’s direction, evaluating political developments and planning for the future.

My own conclusion from this meeting is straightforward. Nawaz Sharif remains fully engaged, firmly in command of the PML-N and focused on leading his party into the next general elections whenever they are held. Whether one agrees with his politics or not, it would be a mistake to underestimate his influence or his determination.

Pakistan’s political landscape continues to evolve rapidly. But after spending three hours with Nawaz Sharif on Friday, one thing appears certain: he believes his political journey is entering a new phase, not its final chapter, and he intends to remain at the centre of Pakistan’s political discourse for years to come.

    A new medical study suggests that omega-3 fatty acids may do more than protect the heart and brain. Researchers say these healthy fats could also help keep the lungs working well for a longer time by slowing the natural decline in lung function. The research was led by Dr. Patricia A. Cassano from Cornell University in New York. She explained that while many studies have looked at how diet affects heart disease and cancer much less research has focused on how nutrition influences lung health. To explore this researchers carried out two separate studies. The first study followed 15,063 adults in the United States with an average age of 56. Most participants were healthy and had no diagnosed lung disease when the study began. They were monitored for between seven and 20 years. Researchers found that people with higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood experienced a slower decline in lung function over time. In the second study scientists analyzed genetic data from more than 500,000 people in Europe. They examined genetic markers linked to omega-3 levels in the blood and found the same pattern. Higher omega-3 levels were associated with better lung function and healthier lungs. Although the findings are encouraging experts say omega-3 supplements should not be seen as a cure or a replacement for medical treatment. A balanced diet regular exercise avoiding smoking and following medical advice remain the best ways to protect lung health.

  • 40,000-Year-Old ivory birds discovered in a German cave

    Archaeologists have recently uncovered two thumbnail-sized sculptures of birds carved from mammoth ivory approximately 40,000 years ago. These delicate figurines, which have spent dozens of millennia buried in sediment, offer an intimate glimpse into the minds, environments, and creative capacities of our ancient ancestors during the Ice Age. The astonishing discoveries were made in the Hohle Fels Cave, a site deeply embedded in the Swabian Jura region of Germany. This location has long been celebrated as one of the most critical archaeological sites in the world for understanding early modern human culture in Europe. The newly found sculptures are extraordinarily small. Each measures less than a single inch in length and weighs merely a fraction of an ounce. It makes them roughly the size of an average human thumbnail. Despite their diminutive scale, the level of detail the prehistoric artist managed to achieve is nothing short of masterful. Rather than relying on abstract or highly stylized representations, the Ice Age carver recorded specific, anatomical observations. The figurines feature carefully incised markings that clearly delineate feathers, as well as distinctively carved eyes. One of the miniature sculptures portrays a bird with its wings fully spread, capturing a moment of dynamic movement, although a few fragments of its body have unfortunately been lost to time. Remarkably, this particular piece now holds the record as the smallest Ice Age artwork ever found in the region. The second figurine, which survived completely intact, depicts a bird in a resting posture. It appears to be lying down, a pose that researchers speculate might represent the animal tending to its eggs. Experts analyzing the avian features believe that at least one of the sculptures represents a ptarmigan, a robust bird belonging to the grouse family that would have been familiar to inhabitants of the harsh Ice Age landscape. While the identity of the second bird remains slightly less certain, it too could be a ptarmigan, or possibly a small bird of prey. Because the two ivory pieces were found just about five feet apart during the 2025 excavation season and share stylistic similarities, archaeologists strongly suspect they were crafted around the exact same time, quite possibly by the very same artist. The excavation was led by Nicholas Conard and a dedicated team from the University of Tübingen, who have been meticulously studying the Hohle Fels site for nearly three decades. The process of unearthing such fragile artifacts requires incredible patience. Researchers painstakingly remove layers of earth before washing and sifting the prehistoric sediment through extremely fine mesh screens. It was during this rigorous process that Elisa Luzi, a paleontologist at the university, first spotted one of the tiny birds. She described the profound emotional weight of the moment, emphasizing the sheer privilege of being the first human being to lay eyes on the carving in 40,000 years, and feeling an instant connection to the humanity of its maker. The Hohle Fels Cave These findings belong to the Aurignacian period, an epoch that coincides with the early settlement of Homo sapiens in Europe. The Hohle Fels Cave which is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site has previously yielded some of the oldest known figurative art and musical instruments on the planet. The collection includes early bone flutes and the famous Venus of Hohle Fels. Exactly why these early humans took the time to carve such intricate, tiny birds remains a mystery. Researchers have proposed various theories, wondering if they were utilized as personal talismans meant to bring good fortune, or as cultural symbols associated with the specific identity of their owner. While we may never have a definitive answer regarding their prehistoric purpose, these thumbnail-sized masterpieces firmly remind us that the human desire to observe, create, and capture beauty is as ancient as humanity itself.

Education is meant to provide equal opportunities to every student, but favoritism is destroying the spirit of fairness and merit. In many schools, some students receive special attention and better opportunities because of their personal connections or background. Meanwhile, hardworking and deserving students are often ignored. This creates disappointment among students and damages their confidence. Favoritism also teaches young people a dangerous lesson: that success depends on connections rather than hard work and talent. If this issue is not addressed, it will negatively affect the future of our education system. The authorities must take strict action against favoritism and ensure equal treatment for every student. Teachers and school administrations should promote merit, justice and fairness. I hope your newspaper will highlight this important issue and urge the authorities to take immediate steps to end favoritism in schools

A Tale of Two Detectives Nothing illustrates Christie’s psychological acuity better than her two iconic sleuths. The meticulous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot and the observant villager Miss Jane Marple. Their methods and personal backgrounds could not be more distinct.  Yet, both figures share an uncanny reliance on psychological insight rather than physical evidence alone. Poirot prioritizes method, order, and intellectual analysis. He famously encourages paying attention to the little grey cells of the brain. Poirot understands that people inevitably reveal their true character through body language and small inconsistencies. Poirot allows suspects to expose themselves by asking precise questions and observing subtle emotional shifts. In contrast, Miss Marple operates from the quiet routine of the small English village of St. Mary Mead. Despite her gentle demeanor and knitted shawls, Miss Marple possesses a sharp mind shaped by decades of watching human behavior in a small community. She operates on the principle that human nature is universal. People react to passion, greed, and fear in remarkably similar ways. Her ability to draw parallels between a suspect’s behavior and local village gossip allows her to solve complex murder cases. The Art of Patience In a fast-paced world where hasty judgments and decisions are common, Christie’s stories offer a lesson in the value of patience, active listening, and careful observation. Her detectives succeed precisely because they resist early conclusions. They listen to what is said and  what is left unsaid. This approach reflects many real-world disciplines, including psychotherapy, journalism, and conflict resolution. So, understanding another person requires suspending immediate judgment and noticing subtle nuances. Christie turns her audience into active participants in a process of empathetic inquiry. For generations of fans, revisiting Christie’s novels or watching cinematic adaptations is more than an intellectual exercise. It is a warm, comforting ritual. Many readers recall discovering her books during youth or sharing screen adaptations with family members. The nostalgic atmosphere of early 20th-century trains, country manors, and seaside resorts provides a captivating backdrop for timeless human dramas. Decades after her death, Agatha Christie remains one of the most widely read authors in human history. Her popularity persists not because audiences simply enjoy detective stories, but because the complexity of human nature never grows old. Her work continues to remind us that behind every smile, silence, or stray comment lies a story waiting to be understood.

    Experts reveal how ancient Egyptians built pyramids?

    The centuries-old Egyptian pyramids have long remained a major focus of interest for people and scientists. For years, scientists have been trying to solve the mystery of how such massive pyramids were constructed in ancient Egypt thousands of years ago. Now, a possible answer has emerged. Earlier, it was believed that ropes and sledging systems were used to transport stones to the upper sections of the pyramids. However, evidence discovered near the Nile River suggests that experts of that era had already mastered advanced construction techniques centuries before the construction of the Great Pyramid of Giza in the desert. Archaeologists have excavated a 5,000-year-old cemetery-like site near the eastern bank of the Nile River. Two tombs discovered there have construction styles remarkably similar to those of the Egyptian pyramids built centuries later. The walls of these tombs were thicker at the bottom and gradually became narrower toward the top. This design provided greater stability to the structures. Similar techniques were later used in the construction of step pyramids and other large pyramids. Researchers also discovered evidence of ancient methods used to cut stones and wood which were employed in the construction of the tombs. The tombs were discovered in Egypt’s Jabal al-Tayr region where people have been buried for thousands of years. The style of these tombs resembles the tombs of kings in Abydos, one of Egypt’s oldest cities. This suggests that advanced construction techniques may have been widely known across Egypt even before the construction of the pyramids. Researchers said the tombs provide a glimpse into experimental construction methods that may have eventually led to the construction of the Egyptian pyramids. Experts said preliminary analysis indicates that the construction style of these tombs was quite similar to that of the pyramids associated with Egypt’s First Dynasty. Egypt’s First Dynasty ruled the country around 3100 BC. According to Egypt’s Tourism Minister, Sherif Fathy, the new discovery will help researchers understand how these construction techniques evolved throughout ancient Egyptian history. Earlier, in May 2024, researchers discovered a buried branch of the Nile River beneath the desert that once flowed around more than 30 pyramids thousands of years ago. This discovery helped solve the mystery of how ancient Egyptians transported extremely heavy stones to the pyramid construction sites. The 40-mile-long branch of the river once flowed around the Great Pyramid of Giza and other pyramids. Thousands of years ago, it gradually became buried beneath desert sand and agricultural land. According to the research, the presence of this ancient river explains how 31 pyramids were constructed between approximately 4,700 and 3,700 years ago in a valley that has now become a deserted strip of desert. The valley is located near Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt and is home to the Great Pyramid of Giza, the only surviving wonder of the ancient Seven Wonders of the World. A study published in the journal Nature Communications reported the discovery of this ancient branch of the river. The research team used radar satellite technology to identify the hidden river channel. Surveys of the area and analysis of samples confirmed the presence of the ancient river. According to researchers, the river was once very powerful but may have gradually become buried under sand because of drought around 4,200 years ago. The Great Pyramid of Giza is located just one kilometer from the bank of this buried river. Around 2.3 million stone blocks were used to build the pyramid with each block weighing between 2.5 and 15 tons. Researchers said the ancient river also provides clues about why pyramids were built at different locations. They explained that the river’s course and flow changed over time which may have led Egyptian rulers to construct pyramids at different locations.

  • China tests giant fusion magnet

    China has successfully tested the world’s largest fusion magnet weighing 582 tons marking a major step toward developing an “artificial sun.” The technology aims to produce clean safe and nearly unlimited energy through nuclear fusion in the future. The giant D-shaped superconducting magnet was developed by the Institute of Plasma Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is designed to control extremely hot plasma using powerful magnetic fields which is one of the most important parts of the nuclear fusion process. The magnet measures 21 meters long and 12 meters wide and has been built for the world’s largest fusion reactor. Reports say it is about 1.3 times larger than a similar magnet used in an international fusion project and can store three times more energy. It is capable of containing plasma at temperatures of up to 100 million degrees Celsius allowing scientists to recreate the same fusion process that powers the Sun. Chinese officials said most of the materials and manufacturing were completed within China reducing the country’s reliance on foreign technology and supplies. China hopes to generate electricity from fusion energy by around 2030. Scientists say an “artificial sun” is a nuclear fusion reactor that copies the natural process used by the Sun to produce energy. If successful this technology could provide the world with a reliable source of clean and almost unlimited electricity in the future.
