Most Americans believe Trump has inappropriately profited since returning to power, poll finds

WASHINGTON, USA – A majority of Americans believe President Donald Trump and his family have inappropriately profited from cryptocurrency since his return to power and that his policy decisions are influenced by his private business dealings, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll found.

The four-day poll, completed on Monday, August 17, found that half of Trump’s own Republicans believe the president allows considerations for his business interests to influence his decisions, a striking finding for a leader who pledged to clean up corruption in Washington.

Most Americans believe Trump has inappropriately profited since returning to power, poll finds

Trump was born into a New York real estate family and built his name into a globally recognized brand before running for office. He earned more than $1.4 billion last year from his family’s cryptocurrency ventures, including World Liberty Financial and the Trump meme coin, digital assets he has publicly championed. In March 2025, two months into his second term, the president called attention on social media to his self-branded crypto coin, describing it as the “Greatest of them all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Some 63% of respondents said it was inappropriate for Trump and his family to have profited in that way, while 32% said it was appropriate and the rest did not answer the question. About three in 10 Republican respondents called the deals inappropriate, while seven in 10 said they were appropriate.

Democrats regularly highlight alleged corruption in the administration ahead of the November midterm elections that will determine control of Congress for the next two years, while Trump’s administration has vowed to investigate alleged corruption in Democratic-run states.

Trump says that he has had no day-to-day role in his family’s business since returning to office and that his investments are independently managed. He has pursued crypto-friendly policies in his second term, after courting crypto cash on the campaign trail.

The White House dismissed any allegations of impropriety, saying Trump’s investments were managed by independent financial institutions.

“There are no conflicts of interest,” White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said in a statement. “The President only acts in the best interests of the American public.”

‘Nothing like this before’

But experts on presidential ethics called the current confluence of business and politics in the White House unprecedented.

“We have seen nothing like this before, even the first Trump administration did not have as many complex business interests as the second Trump administration,” said Richard Painter, the top ethics lawyer for Republican President George W. Bush.

Some 69% of Americans — including two-thirds of independents and nine in 10 Democrats — said they thought Trump’s private business interests were influencing his presidential decisions.

Americans are divided on whether corruption is worse under the Trump administration than under other recent presidents. Democrats largely think there is more graft, while Republicans are split roughly down the middle, with 56% thinking corruption is at least a little better and the rest thinking it is steady or worse.

“It’s concerning,” said Thomas Schmidt, a semi-retired crossing guard in Cudahy, Wisconsin, who voted for Trump in 2024 but has soured on the president this year. “He should be more concerned with his presidency than with his business practices.”

Schmidt said his biggest worries are about Trump’s inability to control inflation or extract the U.S. from the war with Iran that he helped start. He doesn’t think Trump is different from other presidents in mixing his business deals with politics. “I think every president’s done something like that.”

Trump campaigned ahead of his 2016 presidential victory on a promise to fight corruption in Washington, or “drain the swamp,” as he put it.

The public’s views of Trump’s personal enrichment could weigh on his party in the November midterm elections, which will determine who controls Congress during the last two years of his term. Americans say corruption is prevalent across all levels of government, with four in 10 Democrats saying they are extremely angry about graft, compared with one in four Republicans. When poll respondents were asked which party was more corrupt, 41% pointed to the Democratic Party and 49% to the Republican Party.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll, which was conducted online, surveyed 1,166 US adults nationwide between August 14 and August 17. The results had a margin of error of 3 percentage points for all Americans and 5 points for Democrats, Republicans and independents. – Rappler.com

Trump says there is ‘Good Chance’ of deal with Iran as drone attacks continue

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that there is a “good chance” of reaching a deal with Iran, but warned that Washington would resume military operations if negotiations fail, even as Tehran appeared to test the pause in the US campaign with drone attacks on Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Iraq . “They want to meet, and we are meeting. We’ll see what happens. There is a chance we can make a deal,” Trump told reporters . “Without what we did, they wouldn’t even be talking to us.” Washington abruptly suspended a two-week campaign of air strikes against Iran on Saturday in the president’s latest strategic U-turn in the five-month-old conflict . “We’re talking right now,” Trump said aboard Air Force One. “We’re having good talks… I think there’s a good chance that something could happen, and if it does, good; if it doesn’t, we go back to doing what we were doing two days ago.” However, Tehran appeared to quickly test the pause in the US military campaign. Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Iraq reported drone attacks on Monday . Saudi Arabia said it shot down drones aimed at petroleum targets, including in the capital Riyadh, and stated that the drones had been launched from Iraq by Iran-backed armed groups, reserving the right to respond . Separately, Iran’s Houthi allies in Yemen said they had targeted the 1,200-km East-West Pipeline carrying oil to Saudi Arabia’s main Red Sea port of Yanbu, in retaliation for what they said were Saudi drone incursions into Yemeni airspace . Iran has stated it is not seeking to resume peace talks with the US, although it would pause its own attacks for as long as Trump’s self-imposed ceasefire continues . Tehran also said it was still in control of the situation and would not let the US determine the end of the conflict . The contrasting signals from Washington and Tehran come as Pakistan and Qatar continue their mediation efforts, proposing a joint de-escalation formula urging both sides to return to their pre-July 9 positions as a first step toward resuming stalled talks . The path to a deal remains fraught with challenges as hostilities on the ground persist .

Wildfires keep Spain and France on alert amid extr…

Firefighters battling wildfires across Spain and France warned Wednesday that the risk of additional blazes remains very high in the coming days, even as a major fire in Spain’s central Guadalajara province eased enough to allow some residents to return home. Wildfires have already scorched more land across Europe this year than the continent’s average over the past two decades, according to available data, as the world’s fastest warming continent endures its third stifling heatwave in close succession this year. In France, where two firefighters died Tuesday after their truck became engulfed in flames in the southwestern Gironde region, authorities urged residents in areas affected by the heat to avoid using barbecues, stressing that nine out of ten wildfires start as a result of human activity, whether accidental or not. Meanwhile, in the Western Balkans, the nature of the threat has shifted from heat to hailstorms, with several people injured in North Macedonia and eastern Kosovo. Scientists say human driven climate change continues to intensify heatwaves, droughts and wildfires, while also creating conditions that can trigger sudden and destructive storms. Real time data from a climate monitoring tool showed the average high temperature across Western Europe is forecast to reach 26.6 degrees Celsius, about 3 degrees above the historical norm for July 22 based on the 1961 to 1990 reference period. Spain’s most severe wildfire so far this year has burned an estimated 32,000 hectares in the Guadalajara region. The fire began to stabilize Tuesday after forcing evacuations across 34 municipalities and confinement orders in 14 others. Castilla La Mancha’s regional fire service, INFOCAM, said residents of five villages have been allowed to return home, though other restrictions remain in place. Visiting the affected region Wednesday, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said Spain has already experienced 22 major wildfires this year. He said the country has already surpassed 100,000 hectares burned before even reaching the most critical period of the wildfire season, noting that figure matches Spain’s annual average over the past decade. He added that more action is needed to prevent future fires. Spain’s national weather agency, AEMET, said wildfire danger remains very high or extreme across most of mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands and is expected to climb further in the coming days. The agency urged extreme caution as the ongoing heatwave combines with dry thunderstorms and Saharan dust blowing into the region. While temperatures are expected to ease slightly in some areas Thursday, forecasters expect a dry westerly wind to drive a fresh surge of heat into Mediterranean regions, where highs of 42 to 44 degrees Celsius could be recorded in some locations. The back to back heatwaves and wildfires this summer add to a growing pattern of extreme weather events across southern Europe, with officials in both Spain and France continuing to stress prevention measures as the region moves deeper into what is traditionally its most dangerous period for wildfire activity.

Trump White House fires CIA veteran after trans identity revealed

WASHINGTON: A longtime CIA analyst who became the first agency officer to transition while serving has spoken publicly about her dismissal from the White House after her transgender identity was exposed online. Julia Curlee, who spent about two decades with the CIA, said she was retained by the White House when Donald Trump returned to the presidency in 2025, despite his administration’s strong opposition to transgender rights. Curlee told AFP that officials initially wanted her to remain in her position. She said senior members of the new administration treated her professionally and her gender identity did not appear to affect her work. However, the situation changed after far-right influencer Laura Loomer publicly identified Curlee as transgender in a post on X and questioned why she remained in the White House National Security Council’s intelligence office. Curlee said she was dismissed shortly afterward. She recalled receiving a phone call from her new supervisor while she was spending time with her family. According to Curlee, the supervisor told her she had been fired but could not explain the reason. She described the dismissal as evidence that her transgender identity became a problem only after it turned into a public and political controversy. Curlee transitioned in 2013 while working at the CIA, becoming the first officer at the agency to do so while in service. She later joined the National Security Council during Trump’s first presidency in 2017. During her time at the NSC, Curlee provided daily intelligence briefings to then-Vice President Mike Pence. Despite Pence’s conservative views and opposition to several LGBTQ rights, Curlee said her identity never affected their professional relationship. She said her experience during Trump’s first term had led her to believe that she could continue working under a second Trump administration. After Trump’s return to office, however, Curlee said she worked under considerable uncertainty. Several NSC employees were dismissed soon after the new administration took office, but she was initially allowed to remain. She continued working at the White House for roughly 10 weeks before her dismissal. The White House defended the decision, pointing to a 3,000-word opinion article Curlee later wrote for The Atlantic, in which she criticised the president. A White House spokesperson said that someone who publicly attacked the president was not suitable for government service. Pence, meanwhile, expressed support for Curlee and said he and his wife believed people should be treated with dignity and respect. Following her dismissal, Curlee returned to the CIA but remained there for less than a year. She said returning to her former workplace became difficult for several reasons and described having to use a unisex or family bathroom as a humiliating experience.

US accused of hitting LPG tanker as Bahrain, Kuwai…

New, unverified claims from Iranian media and an American newspaper have added another layer of uncertainty to the escalating tensions in the Gulf, with allegations that the United States mistakenly struck an LPG tanker in the Gulf of Oman while Bahrain and Kuwait secretly carried out airstrikes inside Iran. According to Iran’s state-affiliated media, a US missile attack targeted an LPG tanker in the Gulf of Oman after it was allegedly mistaken for a vessel transporting Iranian gas. The reports claimed that two crew members were killed in the strike and that the ship’s engine room was destroyed, leaving the tanker disabled at sea. No official statement has been issued by Washington regarding the reported incident, and the claims have not been independently verified. In a separate development, The Wall Street Journal reported that Bahrain and Kuwait conducted covert air operations against military targets inside Iran earlier this month. The report alleged that the strikes targeted drone facilities and missile stockpiles as part of a broader regional effort to weaken Iran’s military capabilities. The newspaper further claimed that the United Arab Emirates assisted the operations by providing intelligence on Iranian targets and offering air defence support during the missions. Despite the significance of the allegations, neither Bahrain, Kuwait, the UAE nor the United States has publicly confirmed or denied the reported operations. Independent verification of the claims also remains unavailable. The reports emerge at a time of heightened regional instability, with the Gulf witnessing increased military activity and growing concerns over the security of international shipping routes. Analysts say any confirmed expansion of military involvement by Gulf states could further complicate the already volatile security situation in the Middle East. Until official confirmations are issued, the reported US strike on the tanker and the alleged covert air raids inside Iran should be treated as unverified claims originating from media reports rather than established facts.
