Unlicensed Hotels in Phuket Targeted as Thai Government Expands Nominee Investigations

Deputy Interior Minister Polpree Suwanchawee has intensified efforts to dismantle nominee business structures in Thailand, leading a high-profile inspection of hotels in Phuket suspected of foreign-controlled ownership. The campaign is part of the government’s stance that “Thailand’s land must belong to Thai people.”

During the inspection of hotels across three districts in Phuket, authorities discovered three establishments operating without valid hotel licenses. Some had construction permits for condominiums or residential buildings but were illegally converted into hotels. Investigators also flagged suspicious shareholder structures, raising concerns about nominee arrangements designed to circumvent laws restricting foreign ownership. Financial trails linked to these businesses are now under review.

Polpree revealed that during one inspection, individuals claiming to represent “powerful figures” attempted to intervene and halt enforcement. He stressed that officials cannot ignore violations witnessed firsthand, reiterating that lawful operators will be protected while offenders face prosecution without exception. “No influence should interfere with the enforcement of the law,” he declared.

Local officials acknowledged complaints from operators about lengthy licensing processes. The Phuket provincial administration has accelerated the review of pending applications, clearing a significant backlog. However, businesses that never applied for licenses remain subject to legal action.

The Interior Ministry has ordered coordinated action with the Royal Thai Police, Ministry of Commerce, Department of Special Investigation (DSI), Land Department, and Department of Provincial Administration. The joint task force will expand investigations into nominee networks, property holdings, and financial flows of foreign investors nationwide. In Phuket, scrutiny will also extend to cannabis shops and other enterprises suspected of violating Thai law.

The Cabinet Division said all gifts received by the prime minister and deputy prime minister have been deposited with the Toshakhana. It added that the process of assessing the monetary value of the gifts is currently in progress. The estimated value will be determined before the record is finalized, following the standard rules governing official gifts received by public officeholders. The Toshakhana maintains a record of gifts presented to government officials by foreign leaders, diplomats and visiting delegations during official visits and meetings. Under the applicable rules, such gifts must be declared and deposited, while their valuation is carried out through the prescribed official mechanism.

Once he made the statement, his subsequent remarks contradicted one another. I simply could not understand what he was saying or why he was saying it,” Rana Sanaullah said. He stressed that whenever a person makes a public statement, it reflects their personal opinion, adding that it was up to Mohsin Naqvi to clarify the intent behind his remarks and take responsibility for their interpretation. Responding to Naqvi’s proposal regarding the creation of new administrative units or provinces, Rana Sanaullah said such matters could not be decided merely through public statements. “You cannot simply talk about new provinces and expect them to come into existence. The Constitution clearly defines the procedure for creating new provinces or administrative units,” he said. He maintained that the issue should first be debated in Parliament, while the final decision would rest with the leadership of the political parties. Rana Sanaullah recalled that during the PML-N government in Punjab from 2013 to 2018, the party had formally proposed the creation of new provinces. He said he had personally presented both the resolution and the proposal for establishing a commission to examine the matter. He explained that a national commission would have to be formed to review all aspects of creating new provinces, including financial resources, administrative arrangements and constitutional requirements. “The commission would also need to consult on representation in the National Assembly, provincial assemblies and the Senate. This is a highly complex issue that requires serious deliberation by experienced policymakers,” he said. Rana Sanaullah added that Pakistan could adopt smaller provinces, a stronger local government system, or even both, but such decisions should be made collectively by political parties after thorough consultation

According to the Met Office, Lahore’s minimum temperature is expected to remain around 27°C, while the maximum temperature may reach 32°C. Cloudy conditions and intermittent showers are likely to persist, contributing to cooler weather across the city. The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert to district administrations across the province, directing officials to remain on high alert and take precautionary measures to minimize the risk of rain-related incidents, urban flooding, and water accumulation. Meanwhile, WASA Lahore has deployed emergency teams to ensure the timely drainage of rainwater from roads and low-lying areas. Managing Director Ghufran Ahmed, along with other officials, is personally monitoring the city’s drainage operations to prevent disruptions caused by heavy rainfall. Rainfall data recorded across Lahore showed varying intensities in different localities. Nishtar Town received the highest rainfall at 42.2 mm, followed by Lahore Airport with 30 mm.     KOT ADDU: A devastating tragedy unfolded in Kot Addu after a loader rickshaw carrying members of a wedding procession fell into the Muzaffargarh Canal, leaving at least 12 people dead and three others missing. The incident has plunged several families into mourning. Children and women are among those who lost their lives in the accident. Rescue 1122 teams from Kot Addu and Muzaffargarh reached the site soon after receiving information about the incident. A search and rescue operation was launched in the canal. Rescuers used boats, scuba-diving equipment and other available resources to search for the victims. Several bodies were recovered during the operation, bringing the death toll to 12. Three people remain missing. Rescue officials said divers are continuing to search different sections of the canal. Rescue boats are also being used to cover wider areas. According to a list provided by Rescue 1122, those who died included 14-year-old Dalaur, seven-year-old Muneeb, 58-year-old Sakina Bibi, 15-year-old Sameera Bibi, nine-year-old Raju, seven-year-old Muhammad Sibtain, 11-year-old Zareef, 35-year-old Iqbal Bibi, 13-year-old Kaleemullah, 12-year-old Muhammad Jalal, five-year-old Muhammad Ali and Muhammad Saeem. The large number of children among the victims has added to the grief surrounding the tragedy. Families who had set out to attend a wedding were suddenly confronted with an unimaginable loss. Homes that were preparing for celebrations are now filled with mourning. The families of the three missing people are facing severe distress. Relatives have gathered near the site and are waiting for information about their loved ones. Minute Mirror observed that Bashir Mashori, an elderly uncle and relative of the affected family, was deeply grieved over the situation. As the senior family member, Mashori expressed profound sorrow and called for assistance for the victim’s family during this difficult time. Residents have expressed concern over the scale of the tragedy and called for a coordinated rescue effort involving all relevant departments. Local residents and affected families have urged the Punjab government to take immediate notice of the incident and ensure that every available resource is used to locate the missing people. They have called for additional divers, modern search equipment and more rescue resources to be sent to the site. Residents have also demanded the involvement of the police, district administration, irrigation authorities, Provincial Disaster Management Authority and other relevant departments in the search operation. They said a tragedy involving the loss of 12 lives requires a coordinated response beyond routine district-level efforts. The affected families have appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and senior provincial officials to ensure that the search for the three missing people continues without interruption. They have also called for an investigation into the circumstances that led to the rickshaw falling into the canal. The families and residents said determining the cause of the accident is essential to prevent similar incidents in the future. Instead of helping the victims, some people were seen making videos and TikTok content at the scene. Such behaviour has drawn criticism and was described as deeply shameful and insensitive toward those affected. Rescue 1122 teams continue to search different sections of the Muzaffargarh Canal using divers, boats and other available equipment.
