CM Punjab approves 800 mini dams for Potohar water…

POTOHAR: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved an ambitious plan to construct 800 mini dams across the Potohar region over the next three years, marking one of the province’s largest initiatives aimed at improving rainwater storage and tackling water scarcity.

The decision was taken during a high-level meeting on water conservation and groundwater management, where officials briefed the Chief Minister on ongoing efforts to protect Punjab’s water resources. Authorities informed the meeting that 110 mini dams have already been completed across the province, contributing to improved water preservation.

The new project is expected to add storage capacity of approximately 32,000 acre-feet of rainwater, strengthening water security for agriculture and local communities. Maryam Nawaz also directed officials to prepare a comprehensive strategy for developing natural and artificial water bodies while calling for stronger legislation to regulate groundwater use.

To improve oversight, dedicated personnel will be assigned to monitor water conservation initiatives. The chief minister instructed the agriculture, irrigation, housing and local government departments to work together to ensure the effective implementation of water-saving measures.

Officials presented photographic evidence of recently completed mini dams in Attock, Talagang, Gujar Khan and Rawalpindi, highlighting progress already made in the region.

During the briefing, authorities revealed that Punjab has developed a strategy to minimise water losses, which currently stand at around 30 per cent during distribution and 25 per cent during consumption. They also reported that the lining of 2,600 watercourses covering nearly 7,000 kilometres has already delivered significant water savings. Over the next three years, another 4,500 watercourses stretching 11,500 kilometres will be upgraded.

The meeting was informed that high-efficiency irrigation systems have already conserved around 18,000 acre-feet of water while boosting crop productivity by nearly 50 per cent. The government now plans to extend modern drip and sprinkler irrigation systems to an additional 30,000 acres.

Officials further stated that 100 groundwater recharge wells are already operational in the Gujranwala, Gujrat and Lahore divisions, with another 300 nearing completion to strengthen groundwater reserves.

The chief minister also reviewed the availability of fertilisers across Punjab and approved the provision of 1,000 new laser land levellers to farmers at a 50 per cent subsidy during the current financial year to promote efficient farming practices.

In a separate meeting on law and order, Maryam Nawaz directed authorities to adopt a zero-tolerance approach against rape, child abuse and corruption. She was also informed that the Safe City Project has now been implemented in all 43 districts of Punjab and is expected to be inaugurated soon, further enhancing public safety and surveillance across the province.

Pakistan stock exchange holds steady in mid-day tr…

KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) traded in positive territory during Thursday’s mid-day session, although gains remained limited as investors continued to adopt a cautious approach. The benchmark KSE-100 Index stood at 174,533.28 points, registering an increase of 103.36 points, or 0.06 percent, compared to the previous closing level of 174,429.92 points. The market started the day on a stronger note, with buying interest pushing the benchmark index higher in early trading. During the session, the KSE-100 climbed to an intraday high of 175,237.59 points, reflecting initial optimism among market participants. However, the upward momentum was short-lived as investors began booking profits, causing the index to retreat from its peak. At one stage, the benchmark slipped to an intraday low of 174,144.11 points before recovering modestly. Despite the fluctuations, the overall market remained in positive territory, indicating a degree of resilience. Trading activity was moderate throughout the first half of the session. By mid-day, total trading volume had reached approximately 60.14 million shares, while the value of traded securities stood at around Rs3.52 billion. These figures suggested that although investors were active, trading lacked the intensity typically associated with a strong bullish rally. Market participants remained watchful as the trading session continued, with investors responding cautiously to mixed economic and market signals. Analysts noted that the benchmark index moved within a relatively narrow range following its early gains, reflecting uncertainty about the market’s short-term direction. Rather than witnessing broad-based buying across sectors, trading activity appeared selective, with investors focusing on specific stocks instead of making aggressive market-wide investments. According to market observers, institutional participation remained relatively subdued during the session. Large investors largely stayed on the sidelines, resulting in lower overall momentum despite the benchmark index maintaining positive territory. The absence of strong institutional buying limited the market’s ability to sustain its early advance. Brokers also pointed out that profit-taking emerged after the KSE-100 Index approached its intraday high. Investors who had benefited from recent market gains chose to lock in profits, leading to some downward pressure on the index. This selling activity prevented the market from extending its early rally and kept price movements within a limited range. Although the market showed signs of stability during the mid-day session, analysts believed that investor sentiment remained cautious. The performance of key sectors and any fresh developments during the remainder of the trading day were expected to influence the market’s closing direction. A stronger participation from institutional investors or renewed buying in heavyweight stocks could provide additional support, while continued profit-taking might limit further gains. Overall, the Pakistan Stock Exchange demonstrated resilience by holding on to modest gains despite intermittent selling pressure. However, with trading remaining range-bound and investor confidence still measured, market participants continued to monitor developments closely before making significant investment decisions.

18 Girls’ Schools in Upper Dir recommended for t…

LOWER DIR: The District Education Officer (Female) in Upper Dir has recommended the temporary closure of 18 girls’ schools for one week, citing concerns over the safety of students and teaching staff amid the prevailing security situation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. According to an official letter sent by the District Education Officer (Female), Upper Dir, to the district deputy commissioner on Saturday, the education department has expressed serious concerns about the security of educational institutions located in border areas. Officials said the uncertain situation has raised fears about the safety of students and teachers travelling to and attending schools in vulnerable areas. The letter stated that reports received from relevant Sub-Divisional Education Officers indicated that a number of schools were directly exposed to potential security threats because of the ongoing situation in the region. As a precautionary measure, the education department requested the district administration to approve the temporary closure of 18 girls’ schools from August 15 to August 22. The proposed closure includes girls’ high schools, middle schools and primary schools located in areas considered vulnerable because of their proximity to the affected border region. The schools included in the recommendation are situated in Panakot, Qulandai, Dobando, Umrailal, Shandalbagh, Qashqari, Rokhan, Kass, Raza Banda and Khan Shaheed. The official communication was also forwarded to senior officials of the education department and district administration, including the secretary of the Elementary and Secondary Education Department, the director of education, the deputy commissioner of Upper Dir and the district monitoring officer. However, the proposed closure has not yet been formally approved. The deputy commissioner of Upper Dir told local reporters that the administration had not taken a final decision regarding the closure of the 18 girls’ schools. The recommendation comes against the backdrop of heightened security concerns in the mountainous areas of Upper Dir. A security operation is currently underway in Dobando, where a gun battle between police personnel and suspected terrorists began on Wednesday night and continued into Thursday. Officials said the opposing sides remained positioned against each other during the operation and that heavy weapons were reportedly being used. At the time of the reports, however, authorities had not confirmed any casualties resulting from the encounter. The latest security concerns come after a separate deadly incident in neighbouring Lower Dir last month. Two policemen were martyred and 16 others were injured during an exchange of fire with suspected terrorists at Haidari Top, a mountainous location in the district. According to officials, law enforcement personnel had launched a search-and-strike operation in the area after receiving information about the presence of suspected terrorists. During the operation, armed militants reportedly launched a sudden attack on the security personnel. The ensuing gun battle continued for several hours, resulting in casualties among the law enforcement personnel. The security situation has prompted authorities to remain cautious, particularly in areas where schools are located close to conflict-affected or sensitive zones. The education department’s recommendation to temporarily suspend classes is intended as a preventive measure rather than a permanent closure. The final decision regarding the 18 girls’ schools will rest with the district administration. Officials are expected to assess the security situation before deciding whether educational activities can continue safely or whether the temporary closure should be implemented. For now, authorities are closely monitoring developments in the border areas, while the education department has emphasised that the safety of students and teaching staff remains the primary concern.

Hafiz Naeem slams rising prices, elite privileges

Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has criticised the country’s elite class, saying ordinary Pakistanis are struggling under rising costs while privileged groups continue to enjoy extensive benefits without paying their fair share of taxes. Speaking at a press conference at Jamaat-e-Islami headquarters in Mansoorah, Lahore, Hafiz Naeem said increases in petroleum prices have a direct impact on the prices of essential goods and place the greatest burden on middle- and lower-income families. He said access to quality healthcare and education remained inadequate for a large section of the population, adding that ordinary citizens were being deprived of basic facilities. Hafiz Naeem also said Jamaat-e-Islami had not ended its protest sit-in but had only postponed it. He criticised what he described as a political system dominated by a self-serving political class. He said many Pakistanis were taking significant risks to travel abroad in search of employment, while educated young people were also leaving the country because of limited job opportunities. The Jamaat-e-Islami leader further alleged that owners of independent power producers were not being adequately taxed despite earning substantial incomes. At the same time, he said, people across the country were facing prolonged power outages while additional charges were being collected from consumers. Hafiz Naeem accused the ruling class of failing to deliver meaningful relief because of what he described as corruption and poor governance. He questioned the reported purchase of an aircraft worth around Rs11 billion for the Punjab chief minister. He also criticised government officials for defending the expenditure, saying public funds should not be used for expensive official vehicles and other privileges. The Jamaat-e-Islami emir urged authorities to reduce unnecessary government spending and focus resources on providing relief to ordinary citizens.

I require my students to use AI, and some have called this out in my teaching evaluations. My defense is that they will compete with and alongside these systems the moment they graduate, and exposure under supervision beats discovery under pressure.
