Israel strikes southern Lebanon, Hezbollah Command…

BEIRUT: A fragile ceasefire in southern Lebanon is facing another major test after Israeli strikes killed at least 11 people, including civilians, according to Lebanese officials and international media reports. Israel said the attacks targeted Hezbollah positions and claimed to have killed a senior commander. The Israeli military said it had targeted Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon and claimed that a Hezbollah commander, identified in reports as Abu Hassan, was killed. Israeli officials have described the strikes as a response to Hezbollah activity in the area. Lebanese officials, however, said civilians were among those killed in the attacks. Reports said three children and two women were among the victims, while several others were wounded. One of the strikes reportedly hit a home in the village of Ansar, where members of the same family were killed. The latest violence comes despite a ceasefire intended to prevent a renewed escalation between Israel and Hezbollah. The continued strikes have raised fresh fears that the fragile truce could unravel. Lebanon’s leadership has condemned the attacks, warning that continued military action could undermine efforts to restore stability along the border. The escalation also comes amid unresolved disputes over Hezbollah’s weapons and Israel’s military presence in southern Lebanon. With tensions still high, residents in affected communities remain fearful that another cycle of violence could begin.

SBP to maintain focus on price stability, reforms and sustainable economic growth

KARACHI: State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Jameel Ahmad has said the central bank will continue to prioritise price stability, structural reforms and the creation of a business-friendly economic environment aimed at boosting productivity, exports and employment. Addressing a flag-hoisting ceremony held at the SBP headquarters in Karachi to mark Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day, Governor Ahmad said the country had made notable progress towards macroeconomic stability over the past year. He attributed the improvement to disciplined fiscal and monetary policies, better economic management and continued efforts to strengthen financial and economic institutions. Inflation remains within medium-term range Speaking about the inflation outlook, the SBP governor said average inflation during fiscal year 2025-26 stood at 7.1 percent. He said the central bank believed that the prevailing monetary policy stance was appropriate for keeping inflation within its medium-term target range of 5 to 7 percent. According to Ahmad, the current policy framework also provides sufficient space for economic activity to continue, while supporting investment and employment generation. The governor said maintaining price stability would remain a central objective of the SBP as Pakistan seeks to move from short-term stabilisation towards sustained economic expansion. Growth expected to strengthen Ahmad said Pakistan’s economy recorded growth of 3.7 percent in FY26, reflecting the impact of improved macroeconomic conditions and greater fiscal and monetary discipline. Looking ahead, he projected economic growth in the range of 3.5 to 4.5 percent during FY27. He described the outlook as encouraging, saying the economy was gradually moving towards a more sustainable growth path after going through a difficult period of economic stabilisation. The governor stressed that maintaining policy discipline would be important to ensure that the gains achieved in recent years translate into durable economic development. Remittances strengthen external position The SBP chief also highlighted improvements in Pakistan’s external sector, particularly the performance of workers’ remittances. He said overseas Pakistanis had demonstrated confidence in the country by sending record amounts of money home, with remittances surpassing $41 billion during FY26. The inflow is expected to increase further, with remittances projected to reach around $44 billion in FY27, according to the governor. Ahmad said stronger remittance inflows, combined with a relatively low current account deficit, had helped improve Pakistan’s foreign exchange position. The country’s foreign exchange reserves reached $18.4 billion by the end of FY26, while the SBP expects reserves to rise above $21 billion during FY27. He said strengthening the external position would help improve economic resilience and provide greater capacity to withstand external shocks. SBP pushes digital transformation The governor also outlined measures taken by the central bank to modernise Pakistan’s financial infrastructure and expand the use of digital payment channels. He pointed to the successful launch of PRISM+, saying the upgraded payment and settlement infrastructure had brought Pakistan’s large-value payment system closer to international standards. The system has improved the speed, security and efficiency of large-value payments and settlements, he said. Ahmad added that SBP initiatives aimed at encouraging digital payments had resulted in a substantial increase in the use of electronic channels. Retail digital transactions increased from approximately 10 billion to 12 billion over the past year, reflecting growing adoption of technology across the financial system. According to the governor, the shift towards digital payments is more than a technological development. It is also contributing to greater documentation, transparency and efficiency within the economy. Self-reliance and institutions vital for progress Governor Ahmad said Pakistan’s long-term economic success would depend not only on financial and monetary policies but also on stronger institutions, economic self-reliance, respect for the rule of law and national unity. He emphasised that the country’s journey towards sustainable development required continued commitment and collective efforts from institutions, businesses and citizens. While acknowledging the progress achieved during the past year, he cautioned that Pakistan continued to face economic challenges that required sustained attention, policy consistency and determination. He said the objective should now be to convert the gains from economic stabilisation into a durable foundation for investment, productivity, exports and employment. The governor reaffirmed that the SBP would continue playing its role in supporting monetary and financial stability while contributing to broader efforts aimed at improving the welfare of the Pakistani people.

IMF pushes Pakistan provinces for rs430bn tax incr…

ISLAMABAD: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has asked Pakistan’s provincial governments to generate an additional Rs430 billion in tax revenue during the current fiscal year, as part of broader efforts to strengthen public finances and increase provincial own-source revenues. According to official details, the proposed increase in tax collection is equivalent to 0.3 per cent of Pakistan’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and is expected to be shared among the four provinces in line with their allocations under the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award. The move is aimed at improving fiscal sustainability by encouraging provinces to rely more on locally generated revenues rather than transfers from the federal government. Officials believe stronger provincial tax collection would also help create greater financial discipline and support long-term economic reforms. Sources said each province would contribute to the additional revenue target based on its respective share under the NFC formula, although specific collection targets for individual provinces have yet to be announced. The recommendation comes as Pakistan continues implementing economic reforms under its programme with the IMF, with revenue mobilisation remaining one of the key priorities for both the federal and provincial governments. Meanwhile, the federal government has decided to establish an inter-ministerial committee, to be headed by the prime minister, for the implementation of decisions made by the National Economic Council (NEC). According to officials, the committee will include federal and provincial ministers along with senior government representatives. It will be responsible for monitoring the execution of national policies, reviewing progress on major development initiatives and ensuring timely implementation of decisions taken by the NEC. The committee is also expected to strengthen coordination between the federation and the provinces, particularly on economic planning, fiscal reforms and development projects that require close cooperation among different levels of government. Government sources said improved coordination is considered essential for achieving national economic objectives and ensuring that development programmes are implemented efficiently across the country. Economists say increasing provincial tax revenues has long been a key recommendation of international financial institutions, which argue that greater fiscal autonomy can improve governance, reduce dependence on federal transfers and create a more balanced financial system. The IMF’s latest recommendation is likely to shape upcoming provincial budgetary decisions as governments evaluate measures to expand their tax base while balancing the need to protect economic activity. The proposed revenue measures are expected to remain a major focus of fiscal policy discussions in the months ahead.

Shahid Afridi picks up trash, urges tourists to keep north clean

Shahid Afridi has urged tourists visiting Pakistan’s northern areas to take greater responsibility for protecting the environment. The former captain called on visitors to stop leaving garbage behind at scenic spots. Afridi took to Instagram to spotlight the growing waste problem at some of the country’s most popular tourist destinations. In a video filmed among the mountains, he stood surrounded by lakes and waterfalls that had been littered with plastic and bottles. He appealed directly to visitors, asking them to enjoy the region’s beauty while making sure they leave it clean. In his caption, he said exploring the mountains of North Pakistan is a blessing, not an excuse to leave trash behind. He encouraged people to take memories instead of leaving mess, adding that keeping Pakistan clean and green is everyone’s shared responsibility. The message struck a chord with many of his followers online. In the clip, Afridi was seen picking up scattered litter himself while urging families to enjoy the outdoors responsibly. He said people should visit and enjoy time with family, but stressed that dumping garbage carelessly simply isn’t acceptable. He also explained that protecting Pakistan’s natural beauty requires more than just individual effort from tourists. According to him, practical support for local communities plays an equally important role in solving the problem long-term. To make disposal easier for visitors, Afridi said he’s arranging dustbins to be placed around the area. He mentioned that around four to five bins would soon be set up to help tackle the litter issue directly. Beyond the environmental message, Afridi also used his visit to highlight requests from local children. He said kids in the area had approached him with one simple wish, a cricket pitch where they could finally play the sport they love. He said he would try to get the pitch built before Pakistan’s Independence Day on August 14, calling it a small but meaningful gesture. Afridi added that the children had specifically asked for this before the national holiday. The move reflects Afridi’s continued involvement in community-focused efforts, particularly those aimed at supporting children and improving facilities in underserved regions.
