Yeng Guiao labels Cliff Hodge ‘dirtiest player’ in PBA; Meralco takes exception

MANILA, Philippines – Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao did not hold back on his criticism of Cliff Hodge, calling the veteran Meralco forward the “dirtiest player” in the PBA.

This came after Hodge committed what officials deemed an unsportsmanlike foul on Adrian Nocum in the third quarter of the Elasto Painters’ narrow 85-83 win over the Bolts in the Governors’ Cup on Sunday, August 2.

Hodge slid into position in front of a driving Nocum in an attempt to take a charge, the two banging knees.

The collision left Nocum in visible pain as he clutched his left knee and cried out in agony, although he was able to get back on his feet and return to the game to finish with 6 points and 8 assists.

“We were a bit worried about what happened to Adrian. Again, it’s Cliff Hodge. There have already been so many incidents involving Cliff Hodge. He’s the dirtiest player in the league,” said Guiao in a mix of Filipino and English.

“Maybe the league should look into it. He’s a danger to the other players in the game. His record speaks for itself.”

Hodge also looked hurt following the collision, but he suffered a double whammy as the referees slapped him with an unsportsmanlike foul.

“There have been a lot of incidents that, I feel, cause danger to the players. There have been a lot of situations or incidents where Hodge is involved. I think he’s a danger to his fellow players.”

It was not the first time Guiao had some choice words for Hodge.

Back in 2014, Guiao also labeled Hodge a “danger to the league” and went further by using the term “mongoloid” to describe the 2024 Defensive Player of the Year.

Guiao later apologized for using the slur that historically referred to people with Down syndrome, but he stopped short of apologizing to Hodge.

For Hodge, though, Guiao’s latest tirades no longer came as a surprise.

“Coach Yeng always hasn’t liked me so whatever words he says, it’s okay. I play hard for my team, it’s all I do,” said Hodge.

“He likes to do that so I’ll just let him do what he does. That’s his personality. No hard feelings for me.”

Meralco takes exception

On Monday, August 3, the Bolts issued a statement taking “strong” exception to Guiao’s remarks, which they described as “unfounded and unprofessional.”

“Coach Yeng’s malicious imputations against Cliff are uncalled for and have no place in a professional league such as the PBA,” the team said.

Meralco also defended Hodge, saying his style of play simply stems from his competitive drive.

“Cliff Hodge has been a Defensive Player of the Year awardee and named to the All-Defensive Team multiple times through the years because of the energy and passion that he has been known to play with, and this should not be taken against him,” said the Bolts.

“In the play involving Adrian Nocum, Cliff simply stepped in to try to draw a charge in a defensive stance position. The contact was incidental and should not be misconstrued as a dirty play.” – Rappler.com

Pakistan to tour England for five-match ODI series ahead of 2027 World Cup

Pakistan’s men’s cricket team will tour England in May 2027 for a five-match One-Day International (ODI) series, offering both sides an important opportunity to fine-tune their preparations ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup later that year. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially confirmed the tour schedule, with matches set to be played at five different venues across England. The series will begin on 15 May 2027 in Southampton, where the opening ODI will be played. The second match is scheduled for 19 May in Manchester before the teams travel to Leeds for the third ODI on 21 May. Chester-le-Street will host the fourth match on 23 May, while the fifth and final ODI will be played in Cardiff on 26 May, concluding Pakistan’s limited-overs tour. The five-match series is expected to play a significant role in both teams’ preparations for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027, which will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia from 4 October to 21 November. With the tournament only a few months away, the ODI series will provide players with valuable match practice and allow team management to evaluate combinations, strategies, and player form before the global event. Pakistan are currently involved in a two-match Test series against the West Indies. After completing that assignment, the national team will travel to England next month for a three-match Test series scheduled to take place between 19 August and 13 September. The 2027 ODI tour will further strengthen the long-standing cricket rivalry between Pakistan and England and provide another competitive contest between two experienced international sides. According to the latest ICC Men’s ODI Team Rankings, Pakistan are currently placed fifth, while England occupy seventh position. Both teams have consistently remained among the leading sides in one-day cricket, making the upcoming series an important contest as they build momentum ahead of the World Cup. The last time Pakistan toured England for an ODI series was in 2021, when the two teams played a three-match contest. Although Pakistan did not win the series, then-captain Babar Azam produced an outstanding batting performance. He finished as the leading run-scorer with 177 runs in three innings, including a memorable knock of 158 in the third ODI. His performance was widely praised and remains one of Pakistan’s finest individual displays in England in recent years. Cricket supporters from both countries are expected to eagerly follow the 2027 series, which promises exciting competition at some of England’s most famous cricket venues. Beyond the results, the series will serve as a crucial testing ground for both squads as they prepare for the challenges of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. With experienced players and emerging talent expected to feature, the five-match ODI series is likely to provide high-quality cricket and valuable insights for both teams before they head to the biggest tournament in the one-day format.

Scottish FA withdraws support for Infantino amid FIFA controversy

The Scottish Football Association (SFA) has withdrawn its support for FIFA president Gianni Infantino, adding to the growing pressure on the football governing body’s chief ahead of next year’s presidential election. The decision follows Infantino’s controversial proposal involving private investment and the potential sale of stakes linked to the World Cup. The plan has faced strong opposition from several European football associations, raising fresh questions over FIFA’s governance and transparency. SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell confirmed on Monday that Scotland would not vote for Infantino at the next FIFA Congress. “The Scottish FA will not be voting for Gianni Infantino. That’s in line with the UEFA position, and we’ve maintained that stance throughout,” Maxwell said. Scotland has joined England, Ireland and Wales among European federations that have withdrawn their backing for the FIFA president. Infantino is facing mounting criticism after three football confederations accused him of “deception” over his private-investor World Cup proposal in an open letter published last week. The controversy has also placed greater attention on FIFA’s internal governance. SFA president Mike Mulraney currently serves as chair of FIFA’s finance committee. Maxwell said football administrators should focus on their responsibilities rather than remaining constantly in the public spotlight. He argued that FIFA needs stronger transparency, better governance and improved communication with its member associations. “There’s obviously been a fall-down in governance,” Maxwell said, adding that changes to FIFA’s structure and approach would need to be discussed. With opposition growing across Europe, Infantino faces an increasingly difficult challenge as he seeks to retain his position and secure another term at next year’s FIFA Congress.
