Pixel phones just got another exclusive update — Explained
Google’s next Pixel Drop update is officially rolling out – and it’s bringing some significant upgrades to a Pixel phone near you.
While the Pixel 11 series has got a lot of the recent attention, Google hasn’t forgotten about its older hardware. Every phone since the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro is eligible for the September Pixel Drop, having already received Android 17.
Alongside the usual bug fixes and security upgrades, there are a few notable features to dig into.
VIPs get special treatment
The VIPs widget is an easy way to access your favourite contacts directly from the home screen.
With the September Pixel Drop, Google is redesigning it, making it significantly easier to call or text with a single tap. A simple swipe allows you to move between VIP contacts, with notification badges shown directly within the widget.

Stop right there!
Online scams are all the rage these days, so Google is adapting. Not only is it bringing Scam Detection within notifications (previously a US-exclusive) to nine new countries (including the UK), it’s now integrating similar functionality directly into Gboard.
Now, whenever you go to reply to a suspected scam, it’ll be flagged directly above the keyboard. Tapping the button will provide more details.
The catch is that this one is exclusive to the US for now, but hopefully that’ll change soon.
Everyone can take a pause
Pause Point was one of Android 17’s headline features, but it’s been exclusive to the Pixel 11 series – until now.
All recent Pixel phones can now add a pause before opening self-determined distracting apps. Pop-up suggestions include guided breathing, reminders of important photos, alternative app suggestions, session time limits and a requirement to set an intention.

After using the app for a while, you’ll also get a pop-up to make you consider whether it’s still worthwhile.
Potterheads rejoice!
To mark the release of Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions on Audible, Google has also launched new custom themes for Pixel phones. This allows you to change your wallpaper, icons and even system sounds to match what you’ll hear in the audiobooks.
Pixel users can also get a free two-month trial of Audible, and it doesn’t look like you need to be a brand-new customer to benefit.
Design refresh incoming
While the Pixel Drop is the headline announcement, Google is also giving Pixel phones priority in Android 17’s latest QPR1 update.
The changes here are primarily visual, with translucent and blur effects across volume and power menus and a new animation when opening Quick Settings. Within the same shade, multiple apps playing media will be displayed in a carousel, allowing you to easily move between them.
Elsewhere, a long press on apps on the home screen now splits the menu into shortcuts and key system actions.
The September Pixel Drop and Android 17 QPR1 are rolling out to recent Pixel phones now.
