BaT Auction Success Story: Mini Trail, Major Memories — Explained
The Honda Z50 represents more than just a mini-bike to BaT user IndieRockBassPlayer, who won this 1968 Z50A Mini Trail from AJDiMizio in a July 2025 BaT auction. He wrote to tell us more about it:
Years ago, my mother—tired of the brutal Wisconsin winters—moved my family from Madison, Wisconsin, to San Diego, California. I was only 13 at the time. Ten years earlier, she had relocated to the Midwest in 1967 with three kids in tow to be closer to family after the untimely death of my father, who was a naval aviator. I was only three years old then. The 10 years I lived in Madison will always represent a magical time in my life, filled with special memories of the never-ending drowsy summer skies. Time stood still for every child, and none of us had a care in the world, never realizing that each of those days was a gift and that real life (and all its challenges) was only right around the corner.
Far and away, though, the fondest memories of my days in the dairy state were the annual family treks to my Gramma’s house. I looked forward to them all year long! Admittedly (and no offense to my grandmother), this was primarily because about halfway from our house to hers was an enchanted place called Wisconsin Dells! Imagine being a young child and driving into an entire city filled with amusement parks, fudge factories, go-kart tracks, water parks, candy shops, amphibious duck rides, and so much more. Without question, the thing that I looked forward to the most was the mini-bike tracks! It seems like there must have been at least six or eight in this small town, all with hills, tunnels, and bridges! Every single one of them had multiple Honda Z50 Mini Trails! Red ones, blue ones, yellow ones! It was my first experience with motorcycles, and the joy I got when I sped around the tracks was indescribable. I would ride as many different colors as I could until Mom would tell me it was time to climb back into the Buick. For years, I begged her to buy me one of those magical machines, but of course, as a struggling widow, that annual trip was all she could do. She is gone now, passing away suddenly on January 20, 2023, at the age of 84. She will always be my biggest hero.
Recently, I have found myself retired at 61, after 37 years at UC San Diego. To mark this achievement, I rewarded myself with an expensive watch and this bright yellow 1968 Honda Z50A KO. It’s in exceptional shape, and I’m very happy to have won the auction. Originally, I thought I would use it for wave checks in the mornings. But after riding it a few times, I realized that it was far too precious to risk damaging it. So, it is now on display indefinitely inside my small mancave in Pacific Beach. I walk past it every day, and each sight of it brings me immense joy. More importantly, it bonds me to my amazing mother, who lived her entire life in service to her kids.
