Welcome to the Weekly Weird and Wonderful, your guide to the best of the best and the strangest of the strange on Bring a Trailer. Today we have vehicles spanning 110 years of production, including the Undisputed Heavyweight Champ of prewar American cars, a racer so good it was banned at Le Mans, the world’s most practical autocross car, and a rare rotary-powered sedan, among others.
Mid-August is just around the corner, and our friends at Mohr Imports are back with the seventh(!) installment of their Monterey Car Week Collection. This year’s is as eclectic as ever, with a heavy focus on German sports cars this time around. There’s also a quartet of Cobras and Ford GTs, a 16M Scud, an Aston dressed in Ferrari colors, and one of the rarer variants of the Lotus Esprit. The collection encompasses 22 cars in all, spanning from 1957–2022. As a Bring a Trailer Local Partner and a mainstay of the Monterey collector car community for over 40 years, Mohr has provided a series of tour videos featuring the cars from the collection, which showcases many highlights that the area has to offer. They’re calling it “The Local Partners Insider’s Guide to Monterey Car Week” and it’s definitely worth a look.
Happy Car Week Eve, to those who celebrate! Some of our community will undoubtedly be in Monterey soon (check out the Mohr Imports Local Partners Insider’s Guide if you’re planning on it), but many of us will continue to live vicariously through features like this, our weekly roundup of strange and interesting cars currently live on the pages of BaT. This last Saturday evening I met my youngest at the rib place over by the mall. We’ve made it a regular date ever since he moved out of the McBungalow however many years ago. I enjoy seeing him and think he enjoys seeing his dear ol’ dad, but I know full well that in light of his instant-ramen-level cooking skills what he likely enjoys most is having a decent meal once a week, especially if I’m springing for it. No matter. I don’t mind. It’s become a highlight of my week. I always buy a couple of scratch-off tickets for us—the five dollar kind—and we sit in our favorite booth scratching away, hoping to win big bucks as we chat about this and that and nosh on our racks of baby backs and stacks of sweet Vidalia beer-battered onion rings before washing everything down with a Long Island iced tea for me and a Dr. Pepper for the kiddo. It’s a good time. Like I said, a highlight of my week.

Back in 1995, the late Ferndale resident Nelson House helped create what would become “North America’s largest one-day automotive event”—the Woodward Dream Cruise, a seemingly endless stream of American car culture parading along Motown’s legendary Woodward Avenue. A BaT crew will be there for this year’s happening, which will take place this coming Saturday, August 15.
