    “New for me as well! “Scorpio” caught my eye – I had an ’89 Merkur Scorpio from new for several years and really liked it. But it had a V6 which I think was also used in the Bronco. In an amazing coincidence, a co-worked had a Merkur XR4Ti, so we had the rare parking lot that had two Merkurs in it. GLWTA”

    It has always been my dream to own a Clive Cussler owned vehicle. As Mr. Cussler created my all-time fictional hero, in Dirk Pitt.
    To this day, part of my automotive bucket list if I ever had lottery money, is a Cussler musuem collection vehicle. Right after a MB 540K and a Duesenberg SC cabriolet.
    As a child growing up, I was a rabid James Bond fan, and had started scuba diving at 12, and become a member of the Cousteau Society the same year.

    “Still my favorite of the Cobra-R models. I know the 2000 seems to be everyone’s top pick, but I like the trimmer lines of the first generation SN95 and the ease of the 351W. I guess this one has such low miles it would be a shame to drive it much, but I would drive it regardless.”

    This week, our question was: What car is best at “poverty spec?”
    Thanks to everyone who chimed in! The most frequent nomination seemed to be for the Type 1 Beetle—as bare-bones as one could get. But even in Deluxe trim, to us early Beetles seem uniformly simple in nature (after all, that was the point of the volks-wagen).     “I’ve always has a soft spot for first-year designs. Back in the day, car designers were able to accomplish things with their new creations that actually made it into first year production. These unique attributes were often removed or replaced by the bean counters in subsequent model years. The 67 TBird is a good example: compare the front bumper on this car to a 68 or later and you’ll find a beautifully designed full-chrome piece that is replaced by painted metal on other models.     Event Coverage 2/27/26:
    After days of uncharacteristic rainstorms and high winds, the Palm Springs area pulled the nicest day imaginable out of a hat for us on the morning of Saturday, February 21. Cars of all shapes and sizes gathered from the famous playground at the feet of the San Jacinto Mountains, the outer reaches of the Coachella Valley, and from points as far afield as Arizona and the San Francisco Bay Area.

    “This car is fast and we raced against it in LCP in my Datsun 510 with many great memories of running in the top 10 together against the big V8 cars. It will go over 130 as I one time switched the Garmin page to history when he wasn’t looking and it said 132 mph…my 510 was good for 121 WFO”

    A month ago, Alex Porter, our Senior Director of Auction Operations, made an appearance on the CarCast podcast hosted by Matt D’Andria, Bill Goldberg and Alistair Weaver. Alex and the crew talked about the differences between BaT and tentpole auctions, best practices for representing a car on BaT, advantages and disadvantages of celebrity ownership, muscle cars come and gone, and, of course, hall-of-fame profession wrestler Bill Goldberg’s modified 964 Turbo, which was recently sold on BaT.

    What to Know About two-Strokes of Genius: Sports Cars Illustrated on the 1958 Berkeley Sports

    Obscure 1950s sports cars always get our attention—the weirder, the better—and few are quirkier than the 760-pound, motorcycle-engined, front-wheel-drive Berkley Sports. Two examples sold here last year, and, curiosity piqued, we turned to the back issues of our favorite auto magazines to learn more about these funky pocket cars. We found ourselves fascinated by this illuminating road test from the February 1958 issue of Sports Cars Illustrated (now Car and Driver), and just had to share it with the BaT community.

    “I was a dispatcher at Greyhound in the 80s just after the last Buffalos were retired. One thing you used to see in ads for used buses was “Never a Greyhound,” meant to say it was never thrashed in daily Dog service and probably wouldn’t have chicken bones shoved into all the heater outlets. Looks like a nice bus.

    “Fun memory. I purchased a very clean, low milage `64 Galaxie 500XL
    R-Code 427 4 speed when I returned from Vietnam in `67.
    Paid $1700, 59 years ago, when these were just very nice “Used Cars”.
    Now, these survivors are the best of the full size “Muscle Cars” extant.”
