“Drag racing in the south in the 60’s I watched the advent of the lightweights. Lakeland Drag strip in Memphis had among others Herb McCandless aka Mr 4 Speed. I swear he could shift faster than an automatic! ! Car just shuttered when he slammed into gear. As I remember also circa 63 NHRA outlawed aluminum front caps? At the nationals people would tech and then go switch the entire front cap. NHRA got hip and would wait in staging area. With magnet in hand! Truth or consequence time!!”

“All three Muncie 4-speeds were available in the ’69 Z28. Performance wise, the M20 is the best choice as it has a better first, second and third gear. This is all called out in my 1969 Camaro facto book. Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins always raced with the transmission with the lowest first gear. He told me this years ago.”

I worked in the Ford Design Studio from 2005-2022 and these adjustment mechanisms were primarily used on clay armatures and were adjustable to simulate various ride height conditions. “I had to chime in as this brought back memories. My dad had one with factory 4 speed and (at least) front disc brakes. Can’t remember the rears. Factory silver with a vinyl roof. That 4 speed was a LONG throw so it took a while to get there. A lot of axle hop. I always thought it would make a great sleeper hotrod with a bit of engine & suspension work. I had no idea how rare the factory options were. Who knew?”

“Always loved these. I am the person responsible for that front cover photo of Hemmings Muscle Machines. I was the editor of that magazine at the time. That Mopar issue was a ton of work, but satisfying. Beautiful example of when Chrysler actually built cars. Today, just the Pacifica.”
