What to Know About zeekr launches 5-seat 9X to sustain luxury SUV sales momentum

Zeekr, the premium electric vehicle (EV) brand of Geely Auto (HKEX: 0175), has launched a 5-seat version of the Zeekr 9X as sales momentum for the luxury hybrid SUV (sport utility vehicle) slows.

The brand officially launched the 5-seat 9X on Tuesday, with a limited-time starting price of 451,900 yuan ($66,530).

The new model is available in 3 variants — the 5-seat Ultra, Hyper and Obsidian Black editions — with retail prices of 471,900 yuan, 545,900 yuan and 585,900 yuan, respectively.

After limited-time incentives, their effective starting prices are reduced to 451,900 yuan, 525,900 yuan and 565,900 yuan.

Notably, the entry price is below the 465,900-yuan starting price of the six-seat version, which was launched in September 2025.

The new model is built on a 900-volt high-voltage hybrid platform and measures 5,239 millimeters in length, 2,029 millimeters in width and 1,819 millimeters in height, with a wheelbase of 3,169 millimeters.

It is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine developed specifically for hybrids, producing up to 205 kilowatts. Its tri-motor system delivers combined output of as much as 1,030 kilowatts (1,381 hp), allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in as little as 3.1 seconds.

The model is offered with 55-kWh and 70-kWh battery packs, providing CLTC battery-only ranges of 288 kilometers and 380 kilometers, respectively. Its combined range is as much as 1,250 kilometers.

It supports 6C ultra-fast charging, allowing the battery to charge from 20% to 80% in 9 minutes.

As competition intensifies in China’s luxury SUV market, Zeekr is seeking to attract a broader group of premium buyers with a lower entry price.

Zeekr did not hold a launch event for the 5-seat 9X, instead putting the model directly on sale. Such an approach is uncommon in China’s auto industry, where new-vehicle launches are typically accompanied by high-profile promotional campaigns.

One of the main selling points of the 5-seat version is its rear-seat space. The model offers as much as 1.4 meters of second-row legroom, dual zero-gravity seats and what Zeekr calls the industry’s first dual Eames-style recliners.

The new model is equipped with the Geely Afari Smart Driving (G-ASD) system, available in H7 and H9 configurations. The H9 version uses 2 Nvidia Drive Thor chips delivering 1,400 TOPS of computing power and is equipped with 5 LiDAR sensors.

The launch of the 5-seat version comes as sales momentum for the Zeekr 9X weakens.

The model delivered 6,382 units in June, down 24.39% from the previous month and marking its third consecutive month-on-month decline. Monthly deliveries reached a peak of 10,191 units in March.

Zeekr delivered 46,869 units of the 9X in the first half of this year. Cumulative deliveries since its launch have approached 70,000 units, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.

The model's contribution to the brand is also declining. The 9X accounted for 18.15% of Zeekr's total deliveries in June, down from a peak of 31.33% in December last year.

The Zeekr brand delivered 35,169 vehicles in June, up 110.57% year-on-year and setting a new monthly record. Deliveries in the first half rose 96.57% year-on-year to 178,370 units.

Zeekr's latest move is similar to those of some local rivals. Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO) launched a 5-seat version of its large ES8 SUV on July 9 after the 6-seat and 7-seat versions had recorded strong sales for several months.
