Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb held a series of high-level meetings with senior officials of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington to review Pakistan’s economic performance and discuss the progress of the country’s reform agenda. The meetings included discussions with IMF First Deputy Managing Director Dan Katz, Deputy Managing Director Nigel Clarke, Middle East and Central Asia Department Director Jihad Azour, and IMF Mission Chief for Pakistan Iva Petrova. During the talks, the finance minister presented an overview of Pakistan’s recent macroeconomic performance. He highlighted improvements in fiscal management, stronger external accounts, higher foreign exchange reserves, record inflows of overseas workers’ remittances, and a healthier current account position. He also noted that the government had met its revenue collection targets, which he said reflected the positive impact of ongoing economic reforms. The discussions also focused on Pakistan’s progress under the IMF-supported Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF). Both sides reviewed measures aimed at strengthening economic stability and ensuring long-term, sustainable growth. Aurangzeb briefed IMF officials on reforms in taxation, the energy sector, public debt management, tariff rationalisation, and the government’s privatisation programme. He also discussed efforts to broaden financing sources, improve the investment climate, and restore Pakistan’s access to international capital markets. The meetings further covered issues related to human capital development, increasing women’s participation in the economy, addressing demographic challenges, encouraging technology-led growth, and promoting private sector investment and export-driven development. The finance minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining fiscal discipline and implementing structural reforms. He said Pakistan would continue pursuing policies aimed at strengthening economic stability, improving investor confidence, and achieving long-term economic transformation. During his visit to Washington, Aurangzeb also met John Jovanovic, President and Chairman of the Export-Import Bank of the United States, to discuss expanding economic cooperation between the two countries. The meeting focused on financing long-term development projects and increasing bilateral trade in agricultural commodities, including cotton and soybeans, as well as cooperation in the hydrocarbons sector. The two sides also explored opportunities to facilitate greater access to US financing, technology, equipment, and services for priority projects in Pakistan. Officials agreed to identify short-term investment opportunities, appoint focal persons from both sides, and prepare a strategic cooperation framework. The proposed framework is expected to be finalised and signed on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in September 2026.

Tarar proposes mentors for young actors

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has proposed launching a mentorship programme for young actors following the controversy surrounding the alleged disrespectful treatment of veteran actor Mohammed Ahmed by fellow actor Fahad Sheikh. In a statement shared on X, Tarar described the reported incident as “highly deplorable” and said respect for senior artists must remain a core value of Pakistan’s entertainment industry. The minister said the proposed initiative would allow emerging actors to learn professional ethics, discipline and acting skills from experienced performers. He suggested that Mohammed Ahmed, given his decades-long contribution to television, would be well suited to lead the programme, or that a council of senior actors could oversee the initiative. Tarar also announced that he would soon convene a meeting of television artists and industry stakeholders to seek recommendations on establishing the mentorship programme. The controversy began after Mohammed Ahmed, during a recent podcast interview, recalled being mocked and humiliated by a younger lead actor while working on a television production. He described incidents in which the actor allegedly ridiculed him in front of colleagues and behaved disrespectfully during filming. Although Ahmed did not initially identify the individual, videos circulating on social media later linked actor Fahad Sheikh to the allegations. Responding to the criticism, Sheikh issued a public apology, saying that incomplete accounts of the incident had created a misleading narrative. He maintained that he had already apologised to Mohammed Ahmed privately before the issue gained widespread attention online. Sheikh also offered another public apology, acknowledging Mohammed Ahmed’s seniority and expressing hope that the veteran actor would accept his apology. He insisted that he had never intended to insult a senior colleague.

    Kuwait welcomes Pakistan-Saudi-Türkiye Makkah def…

ISLAMABAD: Kuwait has congratulated Pakistan on the signing of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, signalling growing regional interest in the new security arrangement. Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar received a telephone call from Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah late on Sunday, during which the two officials discussed the agreement as well as the wider regional situation. According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the Kuwaiti foreign minister felicitated Dar on the agreement signed in Makkah on Friday. The two ministers also exchanged views on developments in the region, including the situation in occupied East Jerusalem. Their conversation also covered bilateral relations and ways to expand cooperation between Pakistan and Kuwait, particularly in investment and other key sectors. The officials also discussed follow-up to Sheikh Jarrah’s recent visit to Pakistan. “The two sides agreed to remain closely engaged,” the Foreign Office said. The development comes as Pakistan continues to explain the objectives and scope of the landmark defence pact, which brings Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye closer together on security matters. Dar has stressed that the agreement is defensive in nature and is not directed against any particular country. Under the pact, an armed attack against any one of the three signatories would be treated as an attack against all three. The foreign minister said the arrangement was designed to strengthen collective deterrence while supporting regional peace, stability and security. He also maintained that the agreement was consistent with the right of individual and collective self-defence recognised under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. Importantly, Dar clarified that the Makkah agreement does not replace or cancel existing bilateral or multilateral defence arrangements involving the three countries. The pact could also have a broader regional dimension. Dar said the agreement remains open to other countries in the region that are willing to respect its principles and resolve differences through dialogue, cooperation and peaceful means. His comments came amid reports that Egypt could potentially join the arrangement. Earlier, Dar also spoke with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, with the two officials discussing regional developments and the newly signed agreement. Pakistan has presented the Makkah accord as part of its broader foreign-policy objective of promoting regional stability and peaceful conflict resolution. With Kuwait now extending its congratulations, attention is increasingly turning to how the new defence framework could influence cooperation and security across the wider region.
