Royal Thai Police Launch Nationwide Illegal Firearms Crackdown

Royal Thai Police Commissioner-General Pol. Gen. Kitrat Phanphet has ordered police nationwide to step up enforcement against illegal firearms, ammunition, and explosives while increasing security at public places following recent violent incidents involving deadly weapons.

Pol. Gen. Thana Chuwong, deputy commissioner-general responsible for investigation and inquiry affairs, will oversee operations targeting illegal weapons possession and trafficking. Police have been instructed to gather intelligence, identify suspects, and conduct searches involving firearms, military-grade weapons, ammunition, explosives, and imitation firearms, while also pursuing illegal weapons sales through social media and other online platforms.

Pol. Gen. Thatchai Pitaneelaboot, deputy commissioner-general responsible for crime prevention and suppression, will oversee security at public places and crowded locations. Police units have been directed to increase patrols, inspect suspicious people and vehicles, maintain rapid-response capabilities, and deploy specialized tactical teams when necessary.

Pol. Gen. Kitrat has also ordered tighter oversight of government-issued police firearms, including their possession, storage, and issuance. Commanders nationwide have been directed to coordinate investigative and crime-prevention personnel, and all enforcement activities must comply with the law and established police procedures.

The inauguration of Google’s office in Pakistan is being described as an important development for the promotion of digital technology, artificial intelligence and modern digital skills in the country.

    PPP to challenge AJK election results over rigging…

    The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has announced that it will challenge the results of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections through legal and constitutional forums, alleging widespread rigging, voter manipulation and administrative interference during the electoral process. Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, accompanied by senior PPP leader Chaudhry Yasin, accused the federal government, the AJK Election Commission and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of working together to influence the election outcome. He claimed the electoral process was neither transparent nor impartial and alleged that several complaints submitted by the PPP were ignored by the election authorities. Memon said PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had repeatedly called for free, fair and transparent elections in AJK. He said Bilawal had urged all institutions to protect the democratic process and ensure that the interests of the Kashmiri people remained above political considerations. The PPP leader alleged that the AJK Election Commission failed to perform its constitutional responsibilities fairly. He claimed the commission did not take action on complaints submitted by the party during polling and questioned its impartiality throughout the election process. According to Memon, polling staff and election materials reached several polling stations late, affecting the voting process and creating unnecessary confusion among voters. He also questioned the postponement of polling in constituency LA-27, saying the decision was based on weather conditions despite what he described as clear circumstances. He further alleged that violence and intimidation were reported in several constituencies during polling. Referring to the killing of PPP worker Mukhtar Younis in LA-9 Nikyal, Memon claimed the incident reflected the deteriorating security situation on election day. He also alleged that attacks on PPP workers and political leaders were not properly investigated despite complaints to the relevant authorities. Memon accused authorities of failing to take action against those allegedly involved in election-related violence. He also claimed that PPP workers who reached certain polling stations after receiving reports of irregularities came under fire. The senior minister further alleged that ballot papers had reached some candidates before polling day and claimed there were serious violations during the voting process. He also alleged that voter turnout in one constituency exceeded 100 percent and called on the Election Commission to investigate the matter immediately. He said the PPP would continue to pursue all available legal and constitutional options to challenge the election results. The party, he added, would present evidence before the appropriate forums and seek action against those responsible for the alleged irregularities. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also criticised the conduct of the elections, saying the Election Commission had failed to address complaints raised after the first phase of polling. He maintained that the party reserved the right to demand re-elections in constituencies where it believed the electoral process had been compromised.

    ATC remands Mushtaq Ahmad for three days

    ISLAMABAD: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad on Monday granted police a three-day physical remand of former senator Mushtaq Ahmad and his associate, Daniyal, in a case linked to a protest over the recent unrest in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). The suspects were presented before Duty Judge Rukhsanda Shaheen after their arrest. During the hearing, the prosecution requested a 30-day physical remand, arguing that investigators needed additional time to recover a vehicle and alleged weapons connected to the case. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court approved a three-day remand instead of the longer period requested by the prosecution and directed police to continue their investigation. The case has been registered at Islamabad’s Shalimar Police Station. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the protest and the allegations associated with it. The development comes days after Mushtaq Ahmad’s supporters claimed he had been detained for more than 24 hours after security personnel stopped him from entering Azad Jammu and Kashmir. According to his team, the detention was linked to his public support for protests taking place in the region. Following his release, Mushtaq Ahmad addressed a press conference in Islamabad, where he announced plans to hold a condolence, solidarity and peace gathering in support of the people of AJK. He invited students, journalists, civil society members and Kashmiri residents of Islamabad to participate in the event at F-10 Markaz. Earlier, Mushtaq Ahmad had stated that he was travelling to AJK carrying white flags as a symbol of peace and solidarity with families affected by the recent violence. He said security officials stopped him at Azad Pattan Bridge and prevented him from entering the region, after which he recorded a protest message and began returning to Islamabad. His team further alleged that Punjab Police later intercepted his vehicle in Kahuta and took him into custody.

    LAHORE:The University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore has announced the first merit list for its undergraduate admissions, following a strong response from students seeking admission to the university’s various degree programmes. According to data shared by the university administration, UET Lahore received 21,066 applications for undergraduate programmes this year. The applicants also submitted 288,166 programme preferences, highlighting the intense competition among students and the growing demand for engineering and other undergraduate programmes offered by the university. The release of the first merit list marks the beginning of the admission process for the new academic session. Students who applied for admission can now check their selection status and review the details of the admission process through the university’s official admissions portal. UET Lahore has also announced the schedule for the upcoming merit lists. The university will publish the second merit list on August 7, followed by the third merit list on August 14. The fourth merit list will be announced on August 21. The university has advised applicants to regularly check the official admission platform for updates regarding merit lists, fee submission, admission confirmation and other important requirements. Students selected in the merit lists must complete the required admission formalities within the specified deadlines to secure their places in their respective programmes. Meanwhile, UET Lahore plans to begin regular classes for all selected undergraduate students on September 7. The start of the academic session will follow the completion of the admission process and the finalization of student selections. With more than 21,000 applicants competing for admission, the latest figures reflect the continued popularity of UET Lahore among students pursuing higher education in engineering and related disciplines.

    Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has rejected the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) allegations of rigging in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections, saying the claims are baseless and unsupported by credible evidence. Speaking at a media briefing in Islamabad, Tarar said political parties have the right to raise concerns about elections, but such allegations should be backed by concrete proof rather than speculation or political statements. He urged the PPP to accept the election results with political maturity and respect the democratic mandate of the people. The minister said political point-scoring is common during election campaigns, but parties should focus on serving the public instead of making accusations without evidence. He maintained that the election results reflected the will of the people and should be accepted by all stakeholders. Responding to criticism from Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, Tarar questioned the basis of the PPP’s allegations and asked the party to present evidence if it believed electoral irregularities had occurred. He said making serious accusations without proof damages the democratic process and undermines public confidence in institutions. Tarar said the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir voted for the party that presented a stronger development agenda and remained committed to public welfare. According to him, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) centred its election campaign on development projects, better public services and addressing the needs of the people, which earned the confidence of voters. He noted that voters actively participated in election rallies, corner meetings and polling, reflecting the public’s confidence in the electoral system. Tarar recalled that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had congratulated the PPP after its victory in the Gilgit-Baltistan elections, describing it as an example of democratic values, political tolerance and respect for the public mandate. He said all political parties should demonstrate the same spirit by accepting election outcomes gracefully. The minister added that the PML-N leadership, including party president Nawaz Sharif and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, ran a united and well-organised campaign in AJK. He said the coordinated campaign and focus on development helped the party secure widespread public support. His remarks came after PPP leaders announced that they would challenge the AJK election results through constitutional and legal forums, alleging widespread irregularities during the polling process. The PPP has demanded investigations and re-elections in constituencies where it believes electoral violations took place.
