80 Years, still no justice

Chiniot: A family in Chiniot is still waiting for justice in a theft case that was reportedly registered shortly after Pakistan came into being in 1947.

The case dates back nearly 80 years. According to the affected family, a large amount of gold silver expensive clothes and other valuables were stolen from their home on the night between August 14 and 15, 1947.

The family says the case was among the first cases registered in Chiniot after independence and was recorded as FIR No. 8.

According to the family, around 112 to 120 tolas of gold, silver items, Boski fabric and other expensive clothes were stolen.  The value of these items would be worth millions of rupees today.

Despite the passage of almost eight decades the stolen property has never been recovered and the family says there is still no clear record of what happened to the case.

To mark 80 years of waiting for justice the family held a unique protest. They had a cake made featuring the text of the old FIR and cut it to draw the attention of the authorities.

Family members say their elders spent years visiting police stations and courts in the hope of recovering their belongings.  However several generations have passed without any clear result.

A family member Sajid Ismail Dar, said that applications had also been submitted to senior Punjab Police officials in the past.  Some officials took notice of the matter but the case later went quiet again.

The family has now appealed to the Inspector General of Punjab Police and the Chief Minister of Punjab to review the decades old case investigate whether the stolen property can still be traced and provide justice to the family.

  • Cheap deals are no longer enough

Major fast food chains in the United States, including McDonald’s are finding it harder to attract customers simply by offering cheaper meals and discounts.  Recent second quarter results show that price is still important but customers are now looking at other things too including food quality new menu choices and better service. Over the past two years, US fast food companies have used low-cost deals and promotions to attract customers affected by inflation.  However recent results suggest that discounts alone are no longer enough to keep customers coming back. The chains that performed better were those that combined affordable deals with new menu items better food quality and an easier customer experience. Taco bell sees strong growth Taco Bell owned by Yum Brands has focused on simple and clearly priced deals instead of offering large discounts across its entire menu. Its $5, $7, and $9 meal boxes became popular with customers. The company also added new menu items encouraging customers to buy more than just the discounted meal. Rachel Royster director of strategic planning and innovation at food-service consultancy Kinetic said value deals work best when customers can easily understand what they are getting and do not feel they are being attracted by a cheap offer only to face higher prices later. Taco bell reported a 7% increase in same store sales during the quarter. McDonald’s by comparison, recorded a 1.3% increase in global comparable sales. McDonald’s faces challenges McDonald’s also introduced low cost options including a menu with items priced below $3 and a $4 breakfast meal.  However the company’s performance was weaker than expected. McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski said about two thirds of the decline in customer traffic came from people who were already loyal McDonald’s customers.  He said the problem was mainly with how the company’s strategy was carried out rather than the strategy itself. Low income customers remain  Under pressure Results from other fast food companies also show that discounts have not completely solved the financial pressure faced by lower income customers. Wendy’s introduced its Biggie Bag value deals starting at $5. Despite these offers its US same-store sales fell by 7%, and the company withdrew its yearly financial forecast. Wingstop also offered several promotions including $1 chicken wings but its US same store sales dropped by 7.5%. Wingstop CEO Michael Skipworth said sales were weaker in urban areas where many families are facing greater financial pressure.  In higher income areas however restaurant visits increased by as much as 9%. The company’s shares have also fallen sharply over the past six months. Analyst Matt Curtis of D.A. Davidson said the large number of promotions from different fast food chains has made it harder for customers to compare offers.  Customers are now taking more time to compare deals and choose what gives them the best value. Being the cheapest is not enough The second quarter results also show that a restaurant does not have to be the cheapest option in the market to succeed. Burger King owned by Restaurant Brands International was among the chains that performed better. Company officials credited its strong US sales to promotions such as “2 for $5” and “3 for $7,” along with improvements in operations and menu quality. Restaurant consultant John Gordon said Burger King is offering discounts but it is not relying on deep promotions all the time.  The company has also changed the way it presents its offers instead of constantly competing on the lowest possible price. Domino’s and Chipotle also perform well Domino’s Pizza benefited from value-focused offers and loyalty programs.  These efforts helped bring more customers to its restaurants and support sales. Chipotle Mexican Grill also reported strong results.  The company kept its price increases relatively limited, at around 1% to 2%. Chipotle CEO Scott Boatwright said value is not only about lower prices or discounts. It can also include convenience better service and new food choices. Customers want more than cheap food The latest results from the US fastfood market suggest that customers are becoming more careful with their spending. While affordable deals remain important people are also looking for good food better service convenient experiences and interesting menu options. For fast food companies the message is clear being cheap may attract customers but offering better overall value is what can keep them coming back.

  • 6 Best ways to eat chia seeds

Chia seeds are often called a superfood because they contain fiber, protein omega-3 fats and several important minerals. Nutrition experts say chia seeds can be a healthy addition to meals but they should be eaten correctly to avoid possible problems. Why are chia seeds good for you? The bottom line Chia seeds can be an easy way to add fiber protein and healthy fats to your diet. The safest approach is to soak them or mix them into moist foods rather than swallowing them dry.

Jean Rhys’s “Good Morning, Midnight” whispers in the dark

When Jean Rhys published Good Morning, Midnight in 1939, it was met with a chorus of discomfort and bewilderment. Critics at the time found its tone too bleak, its protagonist too unvarnished, and its atmosphere too heavy with melancholy. Yet decades later, this tragic, brilliant novel stands out as one of the most hauntingly modern studies of isolation, vulnerability, and resilience ever written. It is a work that does not simply invite readers into a story; it pulls them directly into the fractures of a wounded mind. The novel centers on Sasha Jansen, an aging Englishwoman returning to Paris after a long absence. Having scraped together a modest sum of money, she hopes to use the trip as a desperate attempt to patch over her fraying life. But the Paris Sasha steps back into is not a romantic city of artists and cafes; it is a claustrophobic landscape of cheap, dimly lit hotel rooms, cold streets, and judgemental eyes. Traumatized by a past filled with poverty, loss, and abusive relationships, Sasha moves through the city like a ghost in her own life, attempting to dull her emotional pain with alcohol while simultaneously craving a human connection she fears will ultimately destroy her. What makes Rhys’s narrative so compelling is her incredible command of internal voice. Written in a tight, stream-of-consciousness style, the novel obliterates the boundary between Sasha’s thoughts and the world around her. Rhys captures the quiet humiliation of financial insecurity. The constant calculation of tips, the fear of being judged by hotel staff, the defensive impulse to buy cheap clothes just to look respectable. Through Sasha’s eyes, even everyday interactions carry a terrifying weight. When she encounters a young Russian man who mistakes her for someone wealthier, or when she interacts with an eccentric gigolo, the tension is palpable. The reader is trapped right alongside Sasha. They navigate the razor-thin line between her deep yearning for intimacy and her absolute terror of being hurt. Beyond its psychological depth, Good Morning, Midnight is a social critique. Published on the cusp of World War II, the novel subtly mirrors the anxiety and dislocation of late-1930s Europe. Sasha’s struggle highlights how unforgiving society can be to women who fall outside traditional expectations of youth, wealth, and domestic stability. She is a woman adrift in an urban landscape that demands self-sufficiency while offering no safety net, making her experience feel astonishingly contemporary to modern readers facing their own eras of isolation and uncertainty. Rhys’s prose is razor-sharp, sparse, and poetic, delivering emotional blows with remarkable economy. The book’s final passage remains one of the most famous, devastating, and deeply ambiguous endings in twentieth-century literature. It is neither a story of neat redemption nor one of complete surrender, but rather a quiet, defiant acceptance of life’s painful complexities. Good Morning, Midnight demands that we look directly at the aspects of human suffering we often try to ignore; loneliness, aging, and  poverty. Jean Rhys offers a masterpiece of modernism that feels as vital, raw, and resonant today as it did nearly a century ago.

  • How termites damage wood

Termites can quietly damage wooden furniture, doors frames cupboards and other wooden items.  They often live in groups and feed on wood so ignoring them can lead to serious damage. Signs of termites You may notice a few common signs of termite activity. Wood may become swollen small mud like layers may appear around wooden items or solid wood may produce a hollow sound when tapped.  Termites can damage wood at any time of the year. If you notice a serious infestation it is better to contact a pest control professional. However for small or early infestations some simple home methods may help. Salt water Mix salt with lukewarm water until it dissolves completely. Put the mixture into a syringe and apply it to affected wooden areas such as door frames. This can be repeated for several days. However it may not completely remove a large infestation. Sunlight Direct sunlight may help reduce termite activity. Place affected furniture in strong sunlight for around 3 to 5 days if possible. Make sure the furniture can safely handle outdoor exposure. Neem Oil Neem oil is another commonly used home remedy. Apply a small amount directly to areas where termites are present.  It may help reduce termite activity although its effect can take time. Vinegar and lemon spray For a small affected area, mix half a cup of white vinegar with the juice of two lemons. Put the mixture in a spray bottle and apply it to the affected area. This can be tried twice a day for a few days. When to get Professional help Home remedies may be useful for small or early termite problems but they are not a guaranteed solution.  If termites have spread widely or are causing major damage professional pest treatment is the safer and more effective option.

  • Our Women Communicators of Tomorrow

By: Mehreen Imambaksh  Empowering Voices for Global Change Throughout history, women have possessed powerful thoughts, deep emotions, and creative voices; yet, many of these voices have gone unnoticed. Their experiences were frequently limited to their homes, their abilities were questioned, and their intellectual development was neglected. However, literature, history, and social thought expose that women were capable of uttering knowledge, shaping culture, and influencing society, but patriarchal systems often restricted their visibility. For centuries, women were expected to remain silent in public intellectual areas. Their role was widely limited to household responsibilities, whereas education, authorship, and public speaking were dominated by men. Yet despite these barriers, many women endured to write, think, and challenge the systems that tried to silence them. One beautiful example can be found in the nineteenth century with the eminent novel *Wuthering Heights*, written by Emily Brontë (1847). Today the novel is considered one of the masterpieces in English literature. Moreover, Emily Brontë did not publish it under her original name; rather, she used the pen name Ellis Bell. Similarly, her sisters also adopted the same approaches. Charlotte Brontë published *Jane Eyre* under the name of Currer Bell, and Anne Brontë published *The Tenant of Wildfell Hall* under the name of Acton Bell. The reason behind these pen names was simple but widely revealing: society frequently refused to take women writers seriously. The Brontë sisters were highly imaginative and intellectually able, yet they felt pressured to hide their identities to ensure their work could be approved. Their circumstances examine the huge restrictions placed upon women’s voices during that time. Long before the Brontë sisters, early feminist thinkers had raised concerns about women’s lack of education and freedom. In 1792, Mary Wollstonecraft wrote *A Vindication of the Rights of Woman*, challenging that women should have equal access to education and intellectual opportunities. She said that women were treated as inferior in society not because they lacked capability, but because they were refused the chance to advance their minds. More than a century later, this problem was discussed again by Virginia Woolf in her masterpiece work *A Room of One’s Own* (1929). She famously argued that women in the past were refused both financial independence and private space, which restricted them from freely uttering knowledge. Therefore, she said a woman needs not merely talent but also freedom and equality to express her feelings and thoughts. Modern scholars have further examined how systems of knowledge can silence subaltern voices. In her essay “Can the Subaltern Speak?” (1988), Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak introduced the idea of epistemic violence, which means how dominant systems of knowledge remove or suppress the voices of certain groups, especially women and colonized communities. When women’s ideas are ignored or removed, their experiences are excluded from the production of knowledge, creating a form of intellectual oppression. These rooted examples depict that women’s silence was never because of a lack of intelligence or creativity. Instead, it was the result of social systems that demotivated or limited their role in participation in intellectual and public life. Even today, this evidence remains visible in many societies. In many cultures, women still hesitate to talk openly, particularly on public platforms or digital spaces. Furthermore, social expectations and fear of judgment frequently create unseen obstacles that prevent women from sharing their thoughts and feelings. This hesitation is not always enforced directly; sometimes it evolves internally due to long-standing social pressures. Moreover, I personally experienced this hesitation in my own life. For many years, I believed in the significance of women’s ability, yet I was not actively immersed in initiatives related to it. One cause for this was my anxiety about visibility on social media platforms to reveal my feelings and ideas because I feared how society, especially as a Baloch student, might react to a woman openly sharing her ideas. This anxiety is not unfamiliar. Many women feel unsure about expressing themselves publicly because they expect critique or misunderstanding. However, personal growth frequently begins with a small step. For me, that step was creating my social media platforms such as Medium, a LinkedIn profile, and starting to share my writings, including poems and reflections based on my experiences. At the start, this act felt common, yet slowly opened new chances. Through this visibility, I became connected with extensive intellectual and professional networks, which ultimately led me to become immersed in women’s ascension. Being involved in this initiative has allowed me to interact with women from various cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives. These interactions have been widely improving. They have shown me that when women communicate and share experiences across cultures, they create unique forms of understanding and collective growth. This experience shows that women’s empowerment does not always happen through major changes, but it begins slowly when women start to express themselves, engage in conversations, and share knowledge with others. Communication is one of the influential tools that helps women to connect their personal experiences with global discussions about equality and justice. However, change needs cooperation. Women’s power should not be seen as an effort between men and women. Instead, it should be perceived as a collaborative struggle to create a fair and inclusive society. Both men and women play a major role in supporting and motivating women’s voices. Traditionally, patriarchal societies frequently reduced women to limited roles, especially examining their function as a child-bearing machine. Whereas motherhood is an essential and valuable role, it should never define the entirety of a woman’s identity. Women have intellectual capabilities, creative skills, and leadership qualities that can contribute importantly to society. Education plays an essential role in changing these circumstances. When women receive education, they gain the confidence and knowledge necessary to contribute actively in social, economic, and intellectual life. Educated women are more capable of expressing their thoughts, challenging injustice, and participating in the development of their communities. Furthermore, the impact of women’s education extends beyond the individual. When women are educated, they can brighten their children’s lives and motivate the next generations
